"Have you seen how miserable and how miserable-looking a lot of the students are. They're deliberately uglifying themselves. You see them on TikTok..."

"They're out of shape. They're asexual. They're, like, rejecting the truth in beauty. They all look like rejects from a loony bin. I'd steer clear of college too."

Said Greg Gutfeld on "The Five" a few weeks ago, and it's become a much-used sound on TikTok. Videos collected here. You can scroll through them for yourself. I'll just select one to show you how young people are arguing back at Gutfeld:

I was forced to watch a teeny bomper zombie movie. It is true. Even the 20 something actors are way uglier now than they have ever been.

It used to be that the gargoyles and schlubby men were directors or writers or whatever. Now they're actors and actresses.

Have things really changed that much? The generation-defining 1994 movie "Reality Bites" was just a bunch of doughy, depressed recent college graduates complaining about how they couldn't get through the day without coffee and cigarettes.

I think students these days are actually much more likely to eat healthy and lift weights.

I believe the children are our future
Teach them well and let them lead the way
Show them all the beauty they possess inside
Give them a sense of pride to make it easier
Let the children's laughter remind us how we used to be

Well I don't know about "deliberately uglifying themselves". Not unless you count nose rings and massive body tattoos.

But if you recall the girls from your high school and college days (in my case 1957 to 1965) most of the girls and the guys weren't packing 30 extra pounds they didn't need.

Walk on a high school or college campus these days and it's all "Chunky Monkey" body styles.
Now as one rather zaftig college sophomore of my then acquaintance told me, she was "built for comfort not for speed". Well okay--I don't see too many speedy folks on the current high school and college scene.

I hope he doesn't call them dumb. I don't know if I can stomach an avalanche of glue-eating tiktoks.

Anyway, it's sort of expected that the yutes will follow ridiculous fads that will embarrass them in the future. This era might break some records, though.

Well, she's got a sense of humor. And she's not unattractive. She is uglifying herself with the nose thing, though.

The uglifying trend goes back further than Gen Z, though. Gutfeld belongs to the generation that still might have had an uncle who got tattoos in the Navy or Marines in WWII. Tattoos became strangely attractive to later generations. Piercings and whatever some people are doing to their ears have also been around for a while.

Not so sure about the lifting weights part of it - skinny and anemic or pudgy and doughy seems more today's style.

Proving Gutfeld's point - NYT published an article slamming LSU gymnast Olivia Dunne for making money (around $2 million) in sponsorships for cashing in on her good looks (quoting a rival college gymnastics coach, all the proof the Times needs these days) because being beautiful is now seen as "bad."

Can't say that I disagree. I've started thinking something similar once I noticed how many pretty women I see with a whole raft of bad tattoos. It's almost like they are trying relieve themselves of the burden of being attractive.

Yancey Ward म्हणाले...

Without question, teens and people in college are much fatter than when I was college in the 1980s. It isn't healthy, and it definitely isn't attractive in either gender. I suppose we could pretend this isn't so, or try to convince ourselves that it is attractive to be overweight and pale but, good luck with all that.

My kids are Generation Z. My daughter is actually quite beautiful. But she's got cheap tattoos and at the moment her hair is half jet black and half bright green. She's got that center nose ring too. I want her to be whatever she wants to be. More than ANYTHING I just want her to be happy, which it seems most in her generation struggle to achieve.

Leave them alone Mr. Gutfeld. Most of their problems are because their Generation X parents helicoptered them. Brought juice boxes to soccer practice. Posted only their successes on social media, and hid everyone's common failures. The age of make believe.

Generation X let the schools dose the boys with Ritalin and put the girls on anti-depressants. They were never allowed to just "get lost", and they've had social media following them around every minute of their lives.

Schools never made them run around the block everyday. Maybe that's why they are overweight. They were always pushed with "new math" and taught to pass standardized tests so their school could get an atta boy from the Dept of Education.

The public schools gave them homework in the first grade, rather than get the work done at school...and let them just be kids after. They are so insecure, they want to reject the body God gave them.

College drives them into massive debt, they are young and dealing with 10% inflation, soaring rents, and are probably priced out of the housing market until they are 40.

My friends don't like it when I say it, but the problem with Generation Z was being raised by The Breakfast Club.

Fifty-plus years ago, the campus left insisted that good looking women, women who took care for their looks, were superficial and shallow.
Thus, lefty girls didn't try for any kind of the usual makeup and dress for out in public that even casual going-to-class times ordinarily generated. And on the basis of if some is good, more is better, some went frump with a vengeance. Sandals are one thing, but half-size snow shoes made from uncured water buffalo hide were The Thing in some circles.

It would have been different if it were merely a matter of distancing oneself from the bourgeois dress requirements. But dissing the more fortunate so viciously was unnecessary.

Progressives need their leaders to tell them who to like and who to hate. The idea that someone might have an independent thought is completely beyond their ability to comprehend.

Gutfeld generalizes shamelessly. The vein of truth that he has tapped into is associated with the neo-Puritan strain in progressive thought. There is a sort of Calvinism within the woke world in which only the elect have the capacity for salvation, and their saved status is manifested in severe self denial and relentless self-criticism. The simple pleasures of the flesh (good food, good sex, relaxed conversation) are regarded with the utmost suspicion. Making oneself physically attractive is a distraction from doing the work of progress. It can lead so readily into disgusting heteronormativity, ableism, and lookism. In the case of people who couple within their ethnicity, it can even be a sign of potential racism. The planet is dying, and under these emergency conditions you cannot allow yourself any of the frivolous pleasures.

You could write a book about it.

No, your failures are not "universal" at all. First of all, for millennia, children had to knuckle under to societal demands placed on them---if only to perform agricultural and other physical labor to keep their families alive.

Historically, it's the husbands who have offered conditional love, a love which the child perceives as "I better do what Dad says, or else I'm in trouble".

THAT'S THE HISTORICAL NORM. It helps civilize children, boys and girls alike. There's never been a successful society where "whatev" is an acceptable standard.

And ignoring that fact is precisely why "single moms" are not capable of filling the missing father's role.

Just look at fatherless American black families, fer crissake. Back when such families had both a mom and a dad, they did not turn out feral, lawless, sociopathic children.

Yet women---some conservatives, but mostly on the left---seem not to notice this FACT; instead you have embraced perverse ideas that devalue masculinity itself. Try reading "The War on Boys" by Christina Hoff Sommers.

Much worse, if you have a husband living with you who's been cowed by feminist harpies to allow his kids to do what the hell they want, he's a wimp. He's a failure as a man, husband and father.

At his funeral, I bet the song sung to commemorate his life will be, " I did it HER way."

Poor bastard.
