We didn't see the Northern Lights...

... but here's proof we tried:

IMG_2840X

And we did have the cool adventure of hiking through the woods 2 and a half hours before dawn to get to the hidden beach on the shore of Lake Superior near Marquette, Michigan (2 nights ago).

I didn't think about taking photographs, so I didn't have a tripod, just my iPhone. The hump you see is not an elephant inside a boa constrictor but a small island, which, I've heard, people swim to and hike around on. How to swim and then hike? Barefoot? Swim in sandals? Float hiking shoes alongside you as you swim? I don't know. I was only doing one thing at a time and getting to that island wasn't on the agenda.

ADDED: The beach is called Granite Point, and the island is Little Presque Isle.

It looks exactly like an elephant inside a boa constrictor.

Did you tame any foxes?

What is the source of that skyglow?

Fine imagery of the greater bear. Maybe I need to upgrade my iPhone…

I see the Dipper.

"I've heard, people swim to and hike around on. How to swim and then hike? "

I read the water's only a few feet deep so you can wade the whole way.

"Unlike Marquette's Presque Isle to the south, Little Presque Isle is an actual island. It sits about two hundred feet off a sandy point on the north side of Wetmore Bay and Sugarloaf Mountain. The water between the island and the beach is a few feet deep at most and is a pleasant wade on most days."

It's easy to tow a drybag when swimming.

Looks like a gentleman's hat to me...

Darn. Have I just outed myself as a philistine?

You need to go a bit more north: NOAA Aurora 30m Forecast alternative: University of Alaska Fairbanks Aurora Forecast

Ann Althouse বলেছেন...

Why should I be afraid of a hat?

Ann Althouse বলেছেন...

"You need to go a bit more north...."

Meade saw them from there a few weeks ago.

You can see the Northern Lights even in southern Wisconsin if the conditions are right. You are seeing them in the distance.

We didn't see the Northern Lights...

Just like Florida!

Yay! I'm so glad people riffed on the elephant reference.

Drybag.

It's been well documented that once a hat has tasted human blood, it often goes on a rampage.

Not if her purse is full of heavy stuff.

Our son went to school in Marquette. What a beautiful little city and location!

Which iPhone?

I've seen the Northern Lights from here in central Pennsylvania (40.8 N), but they're very rarely visible from here.

Leland বলেছেন...

I do understand solar activity, but right now, not as much activity pushing the aurora south.

Northern Michigan University (in Marquette) was the only rink in the WCHA to have a bar (not just beer sales, a real bar). We used to love road trips to Northern. We tent camped along Lake Superior in February.

We we young. Ish.

I've been up to Marquette a couple of times now. A great little city, it's hard not to have great views when you're on the Superior shore. And there is a nice little brewery scene up there. IMO Drifa is the best, then Black Rocks, and then Ore Dock. Drifa's English extra special bitter was excellent.

Why should you be afraid of a hat?
Not afraid, exactly, but... "The Little Prince".

“I see the Dipper.”

Yes and a nice shot of the M82 M81 nebulas at top center too.

Jim, Fox taming takes patience and many visits. Althouse is too busy for that, except when viewing wildlife around the MeadeHouse.

BUMBLE BEE বলেছেন...

Whitmer turned the Northern Lights off off. Going green has it's downside.

Try the Porcupine Mountains sometime. They've got some wilderness campsites.

"What is the source of that skyglow?"
The sun. They're closer to the arctic circle than the Tropic of Cancer.

Quaestor বলেছেন...

@Rusty

If Althouse and Meade were standing on the shore near Big Bay Road, then the view of Little Presque Isle is almost due east. However, the position of Ursa Major indicates they were located somewhere south of the island looking only a few degrees west of due north at about 1:42 A.M. UTC-04:00. Is that the right direction for solar skyglow?

Rusty বলেছেন...

Quaestor.
Yes. There is literally nothing man made up there that would be big enough to give that much light pollution. When we first started going up to fish 50 years ago we were amazed that it was still light enough to read at 10:30 at night. People don't realize how much of wilderness it is up there. 50 years. That's a shit ton of years.
