That talking point dropped out of the conversation. I didn't even get a chance to use my research: the OED defines "raid" as "A sudden or vigorous attack or descent upon something for the purpose of appropriation, suppression, or destruction; spec. a surprise visit by police to arrest suspects or seize illicit goods."
But that doesn't mean that supporters of the raid want to use the word "raid." There's the word "search," but is that adequate? The NYT seems to have worried that "search" alone called too much attention to the the avoidance of "raid," and — I'm just guessing! — they appended "daylong."
Meade noticed that first, and when he texted the quote to me with the word "daylong" circled, and the note...
For NYT, “raid” = “daylong search”
I replied:
like it was gentle and leisurely… like a day at the beach
as legit as the day is long

Althouse, this is my favorite movie.
Thanks for highlighting this scene.
I never thought about it before. (Mostly Casablanca is an emotional experience).
But it just occurred to me(!) that Rick has been ripping off his customers and stealing from them. I never thought of him as a bad man before. I like Bogart from the beginning of the movie!
Objectively, though, that crooked roulette wheel is there for a reason. Bogart's character has been stealing from people. And now he's giving money away.
Kind of an awesome little mini-morality play.
Claude Raine's Captain Renault was such a wonderful 'villian'.
You just need to reset your reference point.
Thanks Ann for the Casablanca clip.
Our New Soviet Democraticals spend a great deal of effort to redefine words every day to support their ever evolving political needs.
But then again, as is demonstrated at Althouse blog daily by the Lefty/dem/nevertrump (but I repeat myself) Usual Suspects, the New Soviet Democraticals understand precisely who their base is and how easily manipulated their NPC's are.
'...as the day is long' does seem odd when you think about it.
The day is only as long as it is, and no longer.
Does this tie into 'Every day and twice on Sunday'?
@Achilles
Bad link...
In law enforcement vernacular it was a raid.
The police locked parents out of a school in Arizona. Tasered them and arrested them when they tried to get to their kids.
1. This is the end of the public school system.
2. Local police are being turned against their communities in shocking ways. This local police department is now completely at odds with the people in polices.
3. This war is between rulers and citizens. The leftists want serfs not citizens.
Blogger and youtube not talking to each other.
You need to refresh your reference point attempt 2.
Paul Sperry was banned by twitter at the request of the regime for posting this.
The FBI agents involved in the raid at MAL were under investigation by Durham.
We call it a "raid" because we don't have a one-syllable word that means "rummage around for whatever you can find." "Ransack" comes close but it's a verb. "A ransack."
It was a day-long rectal probing.
Breaking from NYT: At least one lawyer for the NFL football team, the Las Vegas Raiders, signed a written statement in June asserting that the club would be changing its official name to “the Las Vegas Daylong Searchers,” four people with knowledge of the document said.
For NYT, “raid” = “daylong search”

bless their hearts it was not a SWAT by FBI

A slow sultry daylong among the former first lady's intimate apparel.
Fabulous Bureau, Investigate me!

I tried a few times to master links here, but never got it. I've found that just a few key terms are enough for interested people to get somewhere on their own (with the aid of the Googletubes).
Not to worry, Dilongs were tiny.
I wonder how many months will pass before we find out what the "Top Secret" documents are ? I expect it will be under the new Congress next January.
Trump is as honest as the day is long on winter solstice in Utqiagvik.
They rummaged through is attorney client privileged communications all the livelong day.
They bristled with assault weapons, they showed up with no notice; It was a raid. There is no other word in common usage, maybe "roust."
Word association games…”raid” brings to mind “bug spray” and crews in protective suits wielding wands of poison. Fumigation. A smoking-out of pests and vermin.
I think the word describes perfectly what was done, both literally and figuratively. And the NYT and other opinion-makers are exhibiting a false compunction. They do protest too much; their efforts to expunge the word are actually a strategy to make us think of the word. They are nothing if not subtle.
Change my mind.

Let me be the first to say thanks for posting the music. How clever the lyrics, and brilliant the delivery by Ivy Anderson (says somebody)--so much talent lavished on two-and-a-half minutes of joy.
Ellington was a genius.
I like 'razzia' myself.
Peglegged Picador: "Trump is as honest as the day is long on winter solstice in Utqiagvik."
And yet Trump is as bright as a supernova compared to the New Soviet Democraticals and their deep state Stasi stormtroopers.
A recession is no longer called a recession. A raid is no longer a raid. And, an "Inflation Reduction" law no longer means "inflation reduction".
For words mean just what we want them to mean, no more and no less (unless we change our minds).
Should have tested it, it should have been https://www.google.com/
A 'daylong search' is what I do for my keys. Or my earbuds. (both typically found in the bathroom? for some reason)
When the FBI shows up at my house at 6am with 30-40 armed agents, hands me a search warrant and asks everybody to leave and shut off the cameras, I usually call it a raid. Sometimes I just call it 'having friends over for breakfast'. At least that's what I tell my neighbors (our HOA would not approve of FBI daylong searches without prior approval).
Working with Meade, I see that Lucasfilm, LTD has agreed to change the name of one of it's biggest hits to "Daylong Searchers of the Lost Arc".
Also, the classic "The Searchers" has been retitled, "The Daylong Searchers", to keep on narrative.
One would think Journalists! would offer more pushback on the neutering of their own language.
Limbaugh used to do a sound montague of all the "talking heads" on TV, using the exact same phrase to describe some event. Its amazing how the "party line" comes down from the NYT/WaPo and all the rest of MSM follow-on immediately. Stalin would've been proaud. Even Stalinist Communist officials took more time to follow an editorial in Pravada.
And I am shocked, shocked, at the Leftwing propaganda.
I love that Casablanca film clip, too bad they didn't lose the reactions shots of "Bubbbles". But in those days, Hollywood thought they had to SPELL IT OUT, so everyone in the audience got it. BTW, its amusing we're supposed to regard Bogart as "The hero" and he's shown here as a crook. Yes, with a heart of gold. But still a crook.
NYeT is longing for the monotony of democratic/dictatorial politics run amuck.
The word argument seems to be that since they had a search warrant, it was not a raid. By that logic, only an illegal search can be called a raid. That is absurd - there would never be raids.
A raid is no longer a raid.
That's actually a good sign, that the media is scared to call it a raid.
They want to downplay it.
I think they'd love for this story to go away. They are seriously worried about the Republican base being outraged and ready to roll.
Tsk Tsk.
The FBI's incels go sniffing through Melania Trump's underwear drawer and none of you folks are calling this what it was.
It was a "panty raid."
it was a panty raid
ha ha
chuckle, I'm okay
The one about Bill Maher and his virile body pulled a muscle in my lung or something. That was funny shit.
Someone needs to remind the FBI that calling an obvious raid of dubious legality and constitutionality anything but 'raid' is like Putin calling a brutal invasion of Ukraine anything but a 'war' and an 'invasion': it makes you look like a liar, a fool, and a vicious brute all wrapped into one. Should Garland start calling it a 'special investigative operation' just to rub in the resemblance?
Maybe it's a minor incursion that Biden hinted he would ignore.
It wasn't a raid-raid.
Breaking from NYT: At least one lawyer for the NFL football team, the Las Vegas Raiders, signed a written statement in June asserting that the club would be changing its official name to “the Las Vegas Daylong Searchers,” four people with knowledge of the document said.
I just saw this. Too funny. LOL
the Las Vegas Daylong Searchers
that's the worst football team ever
"He's looking for daylight! He's looking for daylight! He can't find any daylight. He's running back and forth behind the line of scrimmage. This is going to take all day..."
