Daniel J. Faulkner (December 21, 1955 – December 9, 1981): Faulkner was the youngest of seven children in an Irish Catholic family from Southwest Philadelphia. Faulkner's father, a trolley car driver, died of a heart attack when Faulkner was five. Faulkner's mother went to work and relied on her older children to help raise him. He dropped out of high school, but earned his diploma and an associate's degree in criminal justice while serving in the United States Army. In 1975, Faulkner left the army, worked briefly as a corrections officer, and then joined the Philadelphia Police Department. Faulkner got married in 1979. Aspiring to attend law school and ultimately become a city prosecutor, Faulkner was enrolled in college and working toward earning a bachelor's degree in criminal justice administration when he was shot and killed.

I used to accompany a lefty friend to various demonstrations when I lived in San Francisco years ago. I was always assured of seeing at least one FREE MUMIA sign, no matter the reason for the event.

The police did bomb their compound in order to destroy the bunker they had built on the roof. This caused a fire. The fire spread out of control because the people in the compound were shooting, preventing firefighters from doing their jobs.

I saw my first "Free Mumia" car sticker when I went to work at the University of Vermont back at the beginning of the 1990s. I was curious about who this, "Mumia" was and researched it. It became clear, very quickly and easily, that Mumia was absolutely guilty.
Since the article is behind the NYT paywall, I am not sure it was mentioned, but Philly's mayor at the time was Wilson Goode, Philly's first black mayor. He took responsibility for the firebombing, but has claimed he was unfamiliar with the total plan.

On October 26, 1974, in Lawrence, Massachusetts, Horton and two accomplices robbed Joseph Fournier, a white 17-year-old gas station attendant, and then fatally stabbed Fournier 19 times after he had cooperated by handing over all of the money in the cash register. His body was stuffed in a trash can so his feet were jammed up against his chin. Fournier died from blood loss.
That was before Governor Rape-My-Wife-Please let him out for a weekend crime spree.
My relatives lived near MOVE. People from this movement harassed the neighbors in that middle class mixed race neighborhood.
The MOVE cult pretended to live how people live in Africa: but it was based on a fantasy.
They were being served a warrant for child neglect because the kids ran around with no clothes and were undernourished because they were fed uncooked food.
The cops did not bomb the place. It was a flash bang, used in many hostage situations (including when Iranians took over an embassy in London about that time). But the cult stored gasoline on their roof which caught fire.
The fear of being shot, or that the cult's stored ammunition would explode and kill firefighters, allowed the fire to spread.
Ironically most of the middle class who lost their homes didn't make a big fuss about this: usually only white or radicals spread the lies.

Mumia is no longer on Death Row; the death penalty was reversed by the PA Supreme Court upon his umpteenth appeal. They will never stop trying to get his conviction reversed, and now that Larry Krasner is the Philadelphia District Attorney there is a good chance that will happen.
Having worked for many years in the appeals unit of the Philadelphia DA's Office I can assure you that there are no legitimate reasons to challenge his conviction.

Not enough in this story for me to be sure I am right, but this Johanna Fernández sounds a lot like a type dramatically and tragically identified in the first chapter, on Fay Stender, in "Destructive Generation: Second Thoughts About the '60s," by Peter Collier and David Horowitz. Stender was a jailhouse lawyer and romantic dupe of the Panther hustlers way, way back. Unlike Fernandez apparently, Stender came to her senses about the game they played on her. However, it was too late for her anyway. It is a gripping tale and still as relevant as hell.

I was present in the courthouse during one of Mumia's post-conviction appellate hearings. Maureen flew in from California to be present during this multi-day hearing and had to have police escort her through the pro-Mumia crowds into the courtroom. Many were the calls of "bitch" lobbed her way by those champions of justice. Maureen, she was a piece of steel.
