A UW student from China was jumped and punched and kicked by "four tall men in athletic wear."

I'm reading in the student newspaper The Daily Cardinal, in "Updated: Asian international student assaulted near campus Tuesday, campus community rallies to #StopAsianHate." The quoted description comes from the Cardinal, and is based on this security camera photo. You can ask yourself why the newspaper chooses not to guess the race of the alleged attackers.

The Madison Police Department reported that the Tuesday night assault was the third of its kind to occur in the downtown area in the past week, though the two other incidents did not involve students and the “victims were from various backgrounds,” the university said in an email.

The department suspects the same group of people were responsible for these attacks, which appear to be random in nature. In an incident report released Friday morning, the department stated that detectives do not have any evidence that leads them to conclude that the incidents were motivated by race.

The victim himself, Wentao Zhou, did characterize the attack in racial terms — when he posted on Weibo (Chinese social media). That post was shared — in translation — at Reddit, where I saw it 3 days ago:

I was walking home alone tonight across University Avenue, which is the main street in downtown Madison. I was about to turn the corner and head towards my residence when a group of very tall and well-dressed young guys sped up to me and surrounded me, a black guy punched me in the left side of my face all of a sudden, then I was pulled to the ground by the people behind me, followed by punches and kicks. I was so dazed and dumbfounded that for the first 20 seconds, I didn't even realize I should call for help. It wasn't until I was spotted by the people around and I heard there were girls yelling that I realized I should call for help. After I shouted HELP twice, they ran away. When I stood up, my glasses were knocked off, my head was numb, and I couldn't see anything. I continued to yell HELP and crowds started coming from all over. A group of black girls who were partying at a bar across the street witnessed the whole attack, and they came over and sat me down, helped me call the police, handed me tissues and water, and took pictures of me. A passerby white guy, presumably a medical student, checked all parts of my body, checked the wounds, asked some questions, and made sure I was conscious. The police arrived about 5-10 minutes later and took statements from me and the passerby. The location where I was attacked was just across the street from a store, and I was attacked almost right under the store's security camera. The police will request the footage. And there were security cameras all over that busy street....
[I]ncomprehension/violence/conflict can happen in/with any country/era/race. I don't even feel any anger or rage at the young men who attacked me. They are just those who have lost their basic rationalities and common sense under certain ideologies/hatred/cultures. The limited resources in society/education almost decided that it’s impossible to raise everybody into a decent person with common sense. While trying to fight against violence/hatred, we need to raise our own awareness of safety and learn to protect ourselves.
Tonight it's my turn, and I'm glad it's my turn and not the turn of anyone else’s, at least I could still take a few punches.

He talks about race, but in a distinctly sensitive way.

I didn't post about it then, because I couldn't see a story about the attack in any newspaper or on the Madison police report page. I don't rush to share things that are inflammatory and may not be true. The police were on the scene, so I would expect that not only to appear on local news sites but to result in a text warning me of a danger in the area. I am signed up for those police reports and get them with regularity.

Back to the Cardinal article:

The university [emailed students:] “While we don't have evidence these incidents were motivated by race, we know that each time incidents like these occur, it has an impact on the well-being of all our students, and particularly our Asian, Pacific Islander and Desi American students, faculty, and staff, and other communities of color,” read the email from three UW-Madison leaders. “We are committed to creating a safe community at UW–Madison where everyone feels they belong, and we know we have more work to do.”

They're using the phrase "we don't have evidence" to mean we don't have conclusive proof. I'd like to see the word "evidence" used correctly, and I'd like some assurance that they'd resist speculating about a racial motive if the victim had been black.

We're told that "many students are concerned that the incidents were racially motivated and have taken to social media to call out anti-Asian violence on a campus they say doesn’t do enough to support them."

Still,  “Many international students chose @UWMadison because we thought Madison was safer than other big cities. BUT we feel REALLY REALLY upset now,” Luhang Sun, a Ph.D. student at UW-Madison, tweeted. “Where's the support you claim to have for us?” an Asian student commented on Instagram. “What are you going to do to protect your Asian students going forward? How many more times is this going to happen before you realize this is an issue you need to address and shut down.”

You can see that this is very damaging to the university's reputation, but clearly the university is also keen to maintain a reputation among black Americans. Yet it is insulting to virtually all black Americans to patronize the assailants.

ADDED: From the comments at Reddit: "Ironically we got police alerts on the tornado yesterday, but no alert on this one"/"Ikr! I didn’t know about this until I saw this on Reddit!"/"Yeah idk why we don’t get alerts about this. We get alerts about this stuff normally."

Derbyshire (2002)

Back in the late 1980s, there was a judge in New York City named Bruce Wright, known to all as "Turn 'Em Loose Bruce" for his lenience towards the criminals who came up before him. This was one of those liberal judges who had an excuse for every felon, even for those too stupid or obstreperous to have prepared an excuse for themselves. Well, one day Judge Wright got mugged in the street near his home. He was off work for a few days. It was a big story in the tabloid newspapers, and a lot of people were making jokes about it. When Judge Wright returned to the bench, he made a point of starting off that day's session with an announcement: "As I'm sure you all know, I was the victim of a criminal assault the other day. I want to make it clear that this experience will in no way change my sentencing policies on this bench!" As he paused to let this sink in, someone called out from the back of the courtroom: "Mug him again!"

Society is at fault.

"I couldn't see a story about the attack in any newspaper or on the Madison police report page."

That's so puzzling.

"to result in a text warning me of a danger in the area"

That's funny. How would they phrase that "danger"?

“While we don't have evidence these incidents were motivated by race"

As noted in the post, the usual weasel words. "While we do have evidence that, once again, anti-Asian violence was committed by blacks . . ."

"we know we have more work to do.”

What work would that be, exactly?

"I'd like to see the word "evidence" used correctly, and I'd like some assurance that they'd resist speculating about a racial motive if the victim had been black."

I'd like them to use words correctly! I'd like them to be better! They should be better! Why aren't they better?

“What are you going to do to protect your Asian students going forward? How many more times is this going to happen before you realize this is an issue you need to address and shut down.”

Nothing, and many times. Face it, Asians: you are not a protected minority, and BLM more.

"Yet it is insulting to virtually all black Americans to patronize the assailants."

So what? Progs don't care, and few, if any, blacks object to the patronizing. Maybe John McWhorter and Glenn Loury--anyone else? Most benefit from the patronizing, and prefer the implicit moral blackmail they can apply to guilty white liberals.

"Yeah idk why we don’t get alerts about this. We get alerts about this stuff normally."

IDK! Why, oh, why is this happening? It's a mystery! We should have alerts! Like normally!

As long as reality is covered in layers of denial, nothing will change.

Not the first, nor will it be the last, as long as this administration and their intel agents are looking for white supremacists hiding behind every tree and bush. This is a black on Asian problem, and that is why the media DROPPED their EndASIANHATE campaign.

"Four tall men in athletic wear", doesn't always mean "black men", but when it's a racially charged assault and you're trying to avoid reporting the race of the perpetrators, it's hard to imagine a more effective way to signal the race of the perpetrators.

The assault victim's words are laughable, Owen, and it is ok to say so. He will have to take another beating just to get some fucking sense into his head, if those words really do reflect what he feels rather than what he is desperately trying to make others believes he feels. Those four attackers will likely kill multiple people during their lives, but even if by some chance they are identified and arrested this assault, they will be given probation if they receive any punishment at all. It is too bad for Madison that the victim wasn't armed and shot all four of them.

Did I read this correctly that there were at least two other similar incidents in the area, both of those on people of other ethnicities? So...why all the fuss about 'protecting Asians'? Is there any evidence that there is a preponderance of Asian attacks in Madison? Or are we just so ready to jump in line and report the next racial claim? Thugs mugging someone is not new. In New York, Asian attacks are definitely a thing. In LA- same thing. Madison, WI? I doubt it. Seriously.

Just regular crime, folks. Nothing to see here. Go back to your Badgering around. Keep your wits as you walk around. And, as the man who was attacked noted, "...we need to raise our own awareness of safety and learn to protect ourselves." I suspect he'll be applying for a concealed carry license soon. Remove the guns from the law abiding citizens and the thugs will be the only ones carrying.

On the other hand, I'm not sure I want to be walking around downtown wondering how many yokels are carrying, how many of them have been properly trained, and how many are sane most of the time? It's getting so going out to get a pizza requires a strategy.

How do they know they were male? Seems awfully bigoted of them. What does tall mean? Tall compared to what? Do they identify as tall? Athletic wear is rather ableist, don't you think? Why are those clothes associated with athletic endeavors? Maybe it's better to describe it without the added adjective qualifiers.

Whiskeybum म्हणाले...

Strange how the Daily Cardinal decided to describe the assailants:

men - who can say for sure nowadays?

tall - there are only the 4 men in the photo, with no objects around them to reference their heights- and they are all about the same height. So, since 'tall' is a relative term, how do you know you can characterize them as being tall? They all may be 5'10" tall, which is only normal height.

Race: no mention. But... athletic wear (which is not a physical characteristic of the assailants themselves, and probably describes 90% of college student dress at any point in time).

On the other hand, the victim is described as:

Asian International student, i.e., primarily by his race

Not his height. Not is sex. Not his age.

So, the assailants are described by sex and height and what they were wearing, while the victim is basically only described by his race. This points to the reporter a) purposely hiding the race of the assailants (after all, it's right there in the picture for all to see, and they don't seem to mind bringing up the race of the victim at all), and b) coming to the conclusion that the attack was based on the victim's race. Regarding the latter, if that's not the conclusion, then why #StopAsianHate instead of #StopMaleHate, or #StopStudentHate, or #StopPhDCandidateHate, etc.?

Judge Wright spent 25 years on the bench hearing criminal and civil cases, and had a reputation as a scholarly and provocative jurist who sprinkled his opinions with literary quotations. He was the author of a 1987 book, Black Robes, White Justice, about the role of race in the judicial system, which won a 1991 American Book Award. He later authored an autobiography, "Black Justice In A White World." Sixty-five years after being denied admission because of his race, the Princeton Class of 2001 made him an honorary member of their class.
...
Despite his outspoken views and practices, Wright was elected to the New York State Supreme Court in 1979.
...
In retirement, Judge Wright worked as a "greeter" at the local, Old Saybrook, Wal-Mart. He explained this, saying he needed to supplement his retirement income in order to visit Italy, which he loved doing.

I suppose some of them act with a racial animus that informs their wrong decisions, but, if so, it's not readily apparent.....The misdeeds of these cops is described with frothy mouthed hatred. Their victims are Anne Frank and they're the especially sadistic concentration camp guards stuffing her body into the gas chamber....Every morning on the local news some cretin gets caught on camera committing a truly depraved and despicable crime. I would argue that virtually all university administrators are patronizing towards almost everyone else.

One way forward is to treat all involved as individuals with agency instead of as part of lumpen racial groups. The facts here are pretty simple: a graduate student was subject to an unprovoked attack on a street corner in Madison. Bystanders offered immediate help and comfort. The perpetrators are who they are, and they should be pursued without fear or favor because of what they did.

The authorities are more concerned about covering this up rather than publishing it to the world. It gives a negative impression of UW-MADISON.

the department stated that detectives do not have any evidence that leads them to conclude that the incidents were motivated by race.

That's actually true. If your only "proof" is the victim and assailants have different skin colors, you haven't proven anything.

The problem with hate crimes legislation is the same problem with identity politics -- at its core its racist. You give the victim one racial identity and you give the perp another racial identity and you organize people in your mind that way. People have racist thoughts.

It just becomes worse when you start treating the races differently. And some races get screwed and other races get help. At that point, then people not only start hating and fearing the other races, they start developing hostility to the authorities. Trust is destroyed.

The way you make us all less racist is by stopping the whole shoddy stupid practice of dividing people into races. Just arrest the guys who beat the guy on the head and charge them with assault. Do that with everybody. Quit talking about race, quit dividing people into races, quit giving some races special treatment, quit discriminating on the basis of race. It's not rocket science. It just requires people to stop being stupid.

You would think the universities would lead in this. But they are, of course, the worst offenders.
