Can I just say that it's not worth the life of one American soldier to make sure that the Biden crime family is in charge of dividing up the graft in Ukraine rather than the Putin crime family.
I've been struck by how uninterested I am in the Olympic Games this year. Same with everyone I know. Literally no one is talking about it. The news hypes it up, but it falls flat. Is anyone watching at all?
I remember the first Winter Olympics I paid attention to: 1980, Lake Placid. That was a magical event. I was only ten, but it was hypnotic while it lasted. It was the center of attention for every kid I knew. Athletes were celebrities, even though they were amateurs.
The "Miracle on Ice." Eric Heiden's five gold medals. The cross country skiing finish. That Olympics embodied the sense that America was in an upswing, after the dreadful 70s. Even as a kid, I could sense it.
The other Winter Olympic games that followed in the 80s maintained that magic. There are too many great moments to name. Sarajevo, before the war, was like a fairy tail.
This year's Olympics is just nothing. There's nothing to be enthusiastic about. There's no one to root for. I don't think it's possible to replicate a Miracle on Ice. If the US Hockey team won the gold, even against Russia, or against China, I really wouldn't feel anything at all. I sincerely hope our athletes do well, but I can't say that I'm paying attention to them. And the news commentary when I've watched here and there is juvenile. We've become such a sad and immature country. My politics are nationalist, but I feel no patriotism at all during these games. Frankly, I'm not sure a country like ours deserves to win anything.
It's a depressing state of affairs, and I'm sad that something special has been lost.
Anyone watching that Hidalgo video not from Texas, note that a county judge in Texas is a misnomer. Actually an executive position. So she is the elected chief executive of the County containing Houston.
For comparison, Harris County is bigger than the City of LA. I could not see the mayor of Los Angeles being sent away from where he was standing at an LAPD funeral by a cop and the Lt. Governor.
I sincerely hope our athletes do well, but I can't say that I'm paying attention to them.
The ONLY way that they would "do well," in the true sense of good, in a way worthy of being called heroes, is if they were to all get on an airplane and come home. And then denounce Communist China for the criminals that they are.
King County (2,270 sq mi) has Harris County (1,777 sq mi) beat. We also have neobarbarians running our county who demand that we mask up and have vaxx passports to go to the gym or eat out. They also believe that using Natural Gas to heat your home is damaging the climate and new hookups must be banned. Our illustrious County Executive, Dow Constantine is all for masking up, except for when it would be inconvenient for him to do so.
"Did the COVID vaccine cause Heather McDonald to collapse on stage? < She was vaccinated 3 weeks ago with a booster
She has no history of fainting ever
The doctors could find NOTHING wrong with her after she went to the hospital (note that they never test for COVID vaccine injury)
Her fainting spell was not COVID related. She recently tested negative for COVID.
She performed the night before with no incident.
She didn't consume any alcohol before or during Saturday's show
She was making jokes on stage about being “vaxxed, double vaxxed, boosted” right before she collapsed
I believe that the most likely explanation is that the incident was caused by the vaccine. They’ve ruled out every other possible cause.
The vaccine is known to cause sudden loss of function and it is most likely to happen within 60 days after the vaccine. Chelsea Handler
And within 24 hours, another comedian, triple vaxxed Chelsea Handler collapsed and was hospitalized, forcing her to cancel the rest of her shows. Her show was called “Vaccinated and Horny.”
"January 6 was a riot that was incited by Donald Trump in an effort to intimidate Mike Pence and the Congress into doing exactly what he said in his own words last week — overturn the election," [Chris Christie] told [Hugh] Hewitt.
"Now he's trying to do a cleanup on aisle one here in correcting that stuff, but it’s not going to change," Christie added. "He actually told the truth by accident. He wanted the election to be overturned."
"Krispy Kreme" has often been wrong, but not this time.
Now that I am looking at what is required for submitting poetry and short fiction to publishers, I wonder how many phenomenal never-published writers there are out there. Researching markets and sending out submissions is not anything like writing. Certainly there will be a great many excellent writers who never do it.
Readering- if a person insists on being in the way of ceremonial protocol- they are not acting dignified, regardless of their title. If this executive had any shred of decency- she would not have caused a scene pushing back against someone she considered of lower status. Self- absorption at its finest.
As usual, people post a variety of links that I might idly think about following, but don't — because folks don't make them clickable (html) links — an exceedingly easy thing to do. Why bother posting link(s) if you're not going to make them easily accessible to the readers?
From the Hunt For Red October (1990): "The Russians don't take a dump without a plan".
Was the Wuhan lab leak deliberate? Did China benefit from the "accidental" leak? Although the ChiComs were already ascending, who is in much stronger position today, China or the US? Some might call the leak an act of war.

He's not wrong. Trump thought he won and he thought his win was taken from him through election fraud. I wish he were more dignified about it, but that's Trump, he's not dignified.
What really matters is he never encouraged stepping outside accepted channels to challenge the results. In fact, for all the railing about Trump undermining our institutions, he has a better record of respecting the results of institutional processes than any major Democrat.
"Researching markets and sending out submissions is not anything like writing."
The more I learn about it, the less interest writing as a profession has for me. But you can't really let them dictate your art, unless getting paid to do it is your top goal. They do know about getting paid. A friend's daughter got a literary agent based on a professor's recommendation, and it's not even easy for her to get published with one-on-one advice from inside the industry. I am afraid she has given up after getting her first novel rejected by a single vote on a committee.
I read an article about a Russian athlete complaining about how the Chinese had fed her the same almost inedible meal for breakfast, lunch and dinner for five days straight. There was a picture of the unappetizing-looking food. Her complaint did get results as the Chinese brought her a different meal the next time.
Between the constant surveillance, bad food and rigid quarantine away from others, the China Olympics experience sounds a lot like a visit to the Soviet Union in the bad old days. It appears that customer service and communism are incompatible.
@Bender, Yes, that's a big part of it. We are acquiescing to a great evil. In the 1930s, at the Berlin games, people may not have truly understood what Hitler's Germany was about. But we don't have that excuse. China has replaced the Soviet Union as a malevolent and pernicious enemy. And to submit to their authority AFTER two years of a virus that they are responsible for is an absurdity. But at least China let a Uyghur carry a torch.
@MadAsHell, Those quotes are fantastic! Thanks for sharing.
@Caroline, "Sweet Caroline, duh, duh, duh..." Yes, the masks make it worse. Especially the ridiculous inconsistency. Masks on, masks off, smile for the camera. Masks on, masks off, skate together, masks on for the camera...
I come to Althouse primarily for the commiseration in despair.
This weekend seven people died of overdose in the public housing building directly behind my home. Another ambulance is there right now. The local paper STL Post Dispatch has run 1 AP article about it. How is this not national news?
Read this. If they win, your child or grandchild's life may look like this. It is hard to believe that these people exist and are in power. Horrifying.
@Freeman Hunt, Are you writing something? Maybe you can create a blog, or website, and publish it for free. Then you can have optional PayPal or other means to receive some voluntary payments. At least it will get your name and work out there.
At this point, what is going on in Canada is a rebellion, the workers have united, no thanks to the left, and are taking genuine risks to change a government policy, blocking border crossings through which Canada imports a lot of its food. The truckers and farmers are at a "we must hang together, or we will all hang separately point," as Ben Franklin put it. Moderate voices are starting to be heard from the government, but Trudeau is still ramping the divisiveness to the point where he is getting called out by MPs of his own party. But he is dreamy!
"Lockdowns had “little to no effect” on saving lives during the pandemic — and “should be rejected out of hand as a pandemic policy,” according to economists in a new meta-analysis of dozens of studies.
A group led by the head of Johns Hopkins Institute for Applied Economics analyzed studies from the first surge of the pandemic to investigate widely pushed claims that stringent restrictions would limit deaths."
Jeff Bezo's yatch's masts are too tall to fit underneath a Dutch Bridge, so Jeffie's solution is to dismantle the bridge. The obvious solution is to dismantle the masts or install them after Jeffie's boat passes the bridge. But all Jeffie can think of is if the masts don't fit, you must dismantle the bridge. Idiot.

NY post… February 2.
I had not heard about the study, and I consider myself plugged in.
I hadn’t heard because the press is not mention it.

Looks cold. Very cold. I'm guessing -5 F before wind chill. Does the snow creak when you walk on it?
How thick is the ice? How far out on it do you go (or think of going)?
