So said Tom, commenting on the first post of the day today.
I don't know if Tom is the first person to say that, but what an interesting scenario. It has happened before that a former President has gone on to serve in the House of Representatives:
As for George Washington Adams:[John Quincy] Adams considered permanently retiring from public life after his 1828 defeat, and he was deeply hurt by the suicide of his son, George Washington Adams, in 1829. He was appalled by many of the Jackson administration's actions... Adams grew bored of his retirement and still felt that his career was unfinished, so he ran for and won a seat in the United States House of Representatives in the 1830 elections. His election went against the generally held opinion, shared by his own wife and youngest son, that former presidents should not run for public office. Nonetheless, he would win election to nine terms, serving from 1831 until his death in 1848. Adams and Andrew Johnson are the only former presidents to serve in Congress....
Adams's grandmother, Abigail Adams, was unhappy with the decision of her son to name the child after George Washington and not after her husband. She thought the decision "ill judged" and "wrong," adding that John Adams also seemed offended....[George Washington] Adams graduated from Harvard University in the Class of 1821 and studied law. After briefly practicing as an attorney, he ran for state office. He was elected to the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1826 and served one year. In 1828, Adams served on the Boston City Council...
Adams disappeared on April 30, 1829, while on board the steamship Benjamin Franklin in Long Island Sound during passage from Boston to Washington, D.C. He was last seen at about 2 A.M., and his hat and cloak were found on deck, leading to the conclusion that he had intentionally jumped. His body washed ashore on June 10. An alcoholic, Adams had left notes hinting that he intended to kill himself; he had appeared to be delusional while on the ship, asking the captain to return to shore and declaring that the other passengers were conspiring against him....

It would be hilarious but the R's will have to fight for those seats and more to win 1) beyond the margin of fraud in each district and 2) to offset the redistricting losses they'll have in the D-run states, including CA, where the "non partisan" (HAHAHAHAHHAHAH) redistricting commission will no doubt eliminate 5 of the last 7 R districts.
I must say - I like this idea very much. Especially because it would surely put Nancy in her grave after her aneurysm.
It's a much more workable idea too.
Then - we get to work impeaching Kamala. She pays for violent criminals to re-enter the streets and commit more violent crimes.
'
Trump won't become speaker. He's not a government procedures guy, He doesn't do institutions well, and the GOP that kept Liz Cheney as head of the conference wouldn't vote for him. If Republicans do retake Congress that would mean that as many anti-Trumpers as Trump supporters would come to DC, because it would mean that suburban districts that went for Biden would turn red in the midterms. Also there may be "Pelosi fatigue" growing in the country, and that would work in favor of a grayer, less conspicuous speaker - less of a diva or a scene-stealer.
Doesn't matter if Trump isn't a government procedure guy. and you are right - he is not.
It's about cleaning house. after 2 years, he steps aside. It's all about kicking the corrupt left in the nuts and making them eat shit.
The House elects the speaker. Hence it would take only a few Republicans to effectively block Trump.
I bet quite a few Dems who would love to run against Trump again.
Maybe it works in Florida, but after Trump sucks all the funding from donors and takes the TV spotlight, not a lot of space left for those running tight races.
Trump wouldn't even have to campaign in the district. During 2022 he could be flying all over the country stumping for other Rs. In the GOP primaries Trump would stump only for Rs in the MAGA fold. This is how Trump will be re-making the RINO-infested GOP.
The Adamses were tough on their sons. To produce one star, the others were sacrificed. They couldn't live up to the family standards and couldn't live with that. Once the family married into money with JQA's son, the Adamses let up on the kids and gave them more freedom.
Trump should win in, then keep perfectly quiet while he and the GOP drain the swamp.
Make it illegal to do what the Biden family did. Make it illegal to fund the Biden family coffers with FBI-approved international grifting.
Nice imagination there.
No Way in Hell do the Pubbies make Trump the Speaker of the House. That slot is given ONLY to Deep State suckups such as Paul Ryan, John (hiccup) Boehner, et.al.
Of course it's only a dream. To drain the swamp would mean root out corruption all the way up to Biden and the top of the FBI. no easy task.
He should not run for a House seat, as he will become an even bigger boogeyman used across the country to increase Democrat turn out. He can support people or do whatever, but putting his name on the ballot is a high risk, equal reward move.
Did you see what happened to Marjorie Green(Greene? Whatever her name was)? Imagine how much Congress will grind to a halt as they try to stop Trump if he's a Congressman.
It is a huge waste of time and effort to get Trump elected to the House for incredibly minor gains. And that assumes he actually could win a House seat (which he probably can.)
This is Tom and I’ve made that comment for a few weeks. The strategy seems obvious to me if I’m Trump.
I believe Steve Bannon has now been out shopping the idea.
Btw, Trump only stays in Congress IF he’s speaker. If he wins and the GOP loses, he leaves. If the GOP wins but doesn’t pick Trump speaker, he leaves. This is taking away the speaker gavel from Nancy Pelosi and being able to hound Biden and Harris.
Healthy? Probably not.
Entertaining? Absolutely.
Ok, I agree. It would be entertaining.
Finally, drop every paradigm about the role of the Speaker. That isn’t what Trump would be after. To get your mind wrapped around this idea, you have to imagine Trump running the country from the Speaker chair like he was the president.
To get your mind wrapped around this idea, you have to imagine Trump running the country from the Speaker chair like he was the president.
Why not? Nancy Pelosi and Schumer act like they are President(s)or some sort of omnipotent royalty.
Trump should do this. It would be GLORIOUS.
[he won't..but it would be great]
I wonder if this possibility is why Pelosi and the dems tried the second impeachment and, particularly, why they were so focused on Trump not being able to seek office again? Trump could win a congressional seat in three quarters of the FL districts right now.
I've read a few others posit this. It could be the single most entertaining few years of this man's life. Pass the popcorn.
It would be hilarious. Except, you need to understand that even if the R's got a 30 vote majority, they would still NOT make Trump Speaker. There are too many Liz cheney supporters, and fakes like Crenshaw (the Gay Pirate).
eh. While we sleep, the corrupt left are making damn sure their fortified vote fraud schemes are expanded and permanent.
This is a Steve Bannon thing, right? It's stupid because Trump doesn't want to be a mere congressman and sit through meetings and all that lowlife rot.
And the other congressman will have something to say about it.
Bannon doesn't get politics.
...and Trump is just so much like John Quincy Adams, right? Lol
Trump's ego would prevent him from accepting the demotion of President to Congressman. And his laziness would prevent him from ever pursuing a job as demanding and time-consuming as the Speakership. You can't just tweet your way through that job: it involves endless hours of actual work, consensus building, and vote-whipping other egomaniacs who do not agree on anything, into agreeing on everything. Possibly the job least suited to Trump's "strengths". This fantasy has become increasingly popular in MAGA circles but that doesn't make it any more plausible.
JQA is the man of the hour. Some stupid MSM outlet called Biden the president with the most impressive foreign affairs credentials ever. Ridiculous of course on its face, but even taking its claims seriously ... JQA exceeded them by far.
JQA is surely the greatest ex president. He features in a wonderful book, Arguing About Slavery by Miller. Highest possible recommendation to anyone interested in American history.
I heard two different people, last week, propose the Trump-as-Speaker notion. Somewhere, out in the TrumpWorld Fever swamps, this idea has been been infectious for a while. Much like the QAnon idea that Trump will somehow reveal that Biden never became President and that in March, on the day that was prescribed by the Constitution originally, Trump will be inaugurated as President. Because... well you have to ask Q, I suppose.
Well if he were Speaker of the House (in your dreams!) he could tear up Kamala Harris' State of The Union Speech in January 2024. Now that's a scene that would bring a tear to my eye--as I was rolling on the floor laughing.
But the Donald does not have the patience to be one among many--he's not a legislature kind of guy.
In re redistricting. Everyone knows it should help the GOP. The census bureau knows, so they are *delaying* the data release. That makes it harder to accurately redistrict.
This is Bannon War Room scheming. They don't really understand anything. He should go back to Hollywood.
I note that Trump started his re-election campaign mere days after he was inaugurated, in order to behave legally in fundraising, and honorably in public, as a campaigner for office when opposing the mongrels nipping at his heels.
I have seen no news stating he has a campaign legally underway at this time. This leads me to doubt the scenario presented in this post.
That said, my reaction to this post emotionally is, "OMG YES!" Campaigning for president from the Office of the Speaker of the House for two years would be marvelous.
This is far too entertaining an idea to actually try.
The reality could never live up to a fantasy this good.
If I was a showrunner, I might pitch it though...
James K Polk is the only person to be both president and speaker of the house, although he held these titles in the opposite order since he died a few months after his presidency ended. He was pretty much the opposite of Trump in that he had deeply held convictions and actually accomplished all of his goals while president.
Yes, becomes Speaker, and immediately begins campaign for the White House in 2024.
There is no requirement that the speaker be an incumbent congressperson, so no need for GOP to make Trump an issue during the 2022 campaign. Still, all members vote for speaker, so I think Trump has a better chance of being elected commissioner by nfl owners than speaker by house members.
Too bad Trump couldn't move to Kentucky and primary Mitch McConnell. Now that would be entertaining.
Heh Althouse views this as an "interesting" possibility. I can't wait to hear how the MSM describes it. Tears maybe, shrieks of panic are more likely.
DJT think Trump would do it, don’t think he’d be good at it if he did, and I don’t think the GOP house would elect him speaker.
Other than that it’s a fun thought experiment!
Liz Cheney and her fellow dopes would vote for Nancy over Trump, so the GOP would need +20 margin.
I confess to liking this scenario but sadly at my age I might not live long enough to see it bloom. The idea of Trump and bunch of MAGA Congress persons in charge of the budget process, priceless.
The speaker of the House does not have to be a member of the House of Representatives. Republicans (should they have the votes) could elect Trump as Speaker even without his running for office.
Has any ex-President other than John Quincy Adams ever become a congressman?
Chuck, and other lifelong democrats know far more about Q than any actual live republican I know.
Ken B,
Yes, that is obvious given the Census also dragging their feet regarding counting illegals and such so that now that *Asterik is installed, they can go back to plumping up California, IL and NY numbers to try to avoid costing them seats.
CA, IL and NY will still lose 3, if not 4 seats total however.
Has any ex-President other than John Quincy Adams ever become a congressman?
Andrew Johnson was elected to the Senate but died before taking office.
Johnson took office but died a few months later.
I don't see it. Mr. Trump...is not a coalition builder, he's an executive.
I, also, would think it would be hilarious.
Just as it was hilarious that he became President. Then the left and democrats (Democrats) showed their true, fascist and totalitarian, colors. Then it became not so funny anymore.
Trump will not run for elective office again.
He will play Kingmaker within the Republican Party for the next four years.
Stephen Miller should just run for Congress himself rather than try to run things through his demented old boss.
The Speaker of the House is third in line for the Presidency. Can you say "simultaneous double impeachment of the President and Vice President"?
Trump's orange, rested, and ready.
This was discussed on Bannon's War Room several weeks ago. I don't remember the name of the person who came up with the idea.
I think Liz Cheney is toast in 2022.
I don't have any idea ad to how Wyoming congressional primaries can be finessed, but I suspect Liz Cheney is not going to be in the next congress.
Chuck, and other lifelong democrats know far more about Q than any actual live republican I know.
I listened to an interview recently with the man who literally wrote the book on the subject (Joseph E. Uscinski, American Conspiracy Theories, Oxford University Press) and he said Q has as many Democratic adherents as Republicans.
What a splendid scenario!
Yes they should shop it to netflix
I won't read the Dowd column, but here is what is going to happen in the 2022 midterms:
(1) Mail in voting becomes nearly universal when new strains of COVID are "found" that aren't stopped by any of the vaccines.
(2) Midterm "turnout" blows through all expectations by 25-30%.
(3) The Republicans lose all the seats they won in New York, California, and Florida. Additionally, they lose 2 seats in each of Ohio, Pennysylvania, Georgia, and Texas. The Democrats gain a net of 20+ seats in House returning to their 2018 margin.
(4) The Democrats pick up the Senate seats in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and North Carolina, and probably Ohio as well. The Republicans pick up no seats at all unless Manchin switches parties, which he won't.
Looking further ahead, with Congress in their firm control, amnesty is passed easily, and by 2024 there are 10 million newly minted voters ready to reelect Kamala Harris. Texas turns blue, Georgia turns bluer as does Arizona. It is even likely that Harris wins North Carolina, Ohio, and Iowa as those states return to their non-Trump political leanings.
The Republicans are kidding themselves if they think they will ever control anything in D.C. again. Democrats are playing for keeps now, and the Republican Party's supine performance in this past election tells me they are utterly fucking clueless.
"Arguing About Slavery by Miller"
Williams Lee Miller's "Lincoln's Virtues" is another wonderful book.
James K Polk is the only person to be both president and speaker of the house, although he held these titles in the opposite order since he died a few months after his presidency ended. He was pretty much the opposite of Trump in that he had deeply held convictions and actually accomplished all of his goals while president.
James K. Polk's "convictions" would get him cancelled in a heartbeat nowadays. Possibly impeached and put on trial in The Hague too.
He was an "America First" guy, though. Gotta give him that.
Trump has shown himself to be pretty consistent in his beliefs since he got elected. Before that, he was out of politics and free to think as he wished.
This is far too entertaining an idea to actually try.
The reality could never live up to a fantasy this good.
If I was a showrunner, I might pitch it though...
President Trump could do this. It has to be his idea, so he gives it 100%. He knows how TV works, knows about time constraints and all the periphery stuff, he had one of TV's top rated shows for years.
I could see this as the conservatives version of West Wing, and Veep. Trump of course plays himself.
Biden will have long been gone, but still cast a dementia riddled POTUS, and Trump replacing a nasty shrew as speaker...not modeled after any real life person of course.
You would have a southern gay as majority leader of the Senate.
This is just too much fun
Begley and Laslo could do the screen play.
Yancey.
Agreed. The first thing to do is to roll back mail in voting (never mind cleaning up existing voter rolls) but R's won't because they'll be mercilessly branded racists for voter suppression. Of course they're so stupid they won't realize that they're going to be called racist no matter what they do.
If the R's don't roll back mail in voting, they will never win again. (see: CA, Oregon, Colorado).
Everything else you say follows that.
Trump of course plays himself.
Not without a SAG-AFTRA card — he was permanently banned from union membership. Call it a blacklist.
Has any ex-President other than John Quincy Adams ever become a congressman?
Andrew Johnson became a senator but died a few months into his term. William Howard Taft became chief justice. Some people want Biden/Harris to do something like that for Obama.
Most presidents are contented to be retired, though they may seek attention in other ways. The few who go back into elective politics are a little like ghosts in that they have unfinished business to take care of and settles to score before they finally take leave of us.
The Republicans are kidding themselves if they think they will ever control anything in D.C. again.
We've been here before. In the late 70s, the Dems had the White House as well as huge majorities in both houses of Congress. By the early 80s, however...
The problem, RMc, is that country no longer exists. The country will divide before Republicans are a significant force in D.C. again.
Once you have progressed to elections that can't be trusted, you are a banana republic. There is no way back.
The only think that matters is vote integrity. - otherwise - Yancey is right.
I dunno why the GOP turtles when accused of voter suppression- I am all in favor of voter suppression. Literacy tests, property requirements, let’s bring ‘em back; and lets repeal the 17th amendment while we’re at it. And no more mail in ballots, and while I’m all fired up, no one who works for the government should be able to vote.- federal government employees shouldn’t be able to vote in national elections, local government employees can’t vote in local elections. Oh, and far from getting statehood, DC should go back to the status it had before, under the control of Congress. I know, cue the Everly Brothers.
BTW John Tyler was elected to the Confederate House of Representatives, but died before taking his seat.
And one more thing- if you have an EBT card in your purse or wallet you can’t vote either.
And one more thing- if you have an EBT card in your purse or wallet you can’t vote either.

No representation without taxation.
Taxpayers get to vote.
Tax eaters don't get to vote.
We've been here before. In the late 70s, the Dems had the White House as well as huge majorities in both houses of Congress. By the early 80s, however...
Not a dozen years ago the Democrats held the White House, the House of Representatives, and a filibuster-proof majority of 60 in the Senate. Eight years later, Republicans won the White House and both houses of Congress. Four years later . . .
Wetting yourself like a little girl is a bad look.
What about the States? Saying the 'country is doomed' is ignoring that. The federal government is, currently, a waste of space - putting it mildly. But it is up to the states to maintain their own integrity.
States are already ignoring federal laws. I don't think there's much the federal government can do about it - except take our money and create a federal police force, like the SS, perhaps; the current regime has already deemed that they need protecting with razor wire, and the current military ranks are infested with conservative, wrong thinking, people.

What malignant fucking bullshit. It’s TrumpWorld’s claim that the 2020 election was a Trump “landslide” that was “stolen.” If you really believe that — and you are just the sort of Trump cultist who I expect might believe it — then fine. Just don’t expect anyone else to care about your cult fetishes. You’ll have nothing to do with any serious national leadership. Most of “the country” won’t care about you and won’t have anything to do with you.
Like I wrote, life long Republicans are utterly fucking clueless. They will literally bare their necks for the executioner.
After 2022 and 2024, Chuck will be trying to sneak comments into these thread blaming Trump for the Republican losses, even if Trump dies tomorrow.
If the Republicans don't push back on mail in voting, they are finished. It really is that simple.
Trump has shown himself to be pretty consistent in his beliefs since he got elected. Before that, he was out of politics and free to think as he wished.
Trump is so un-bookish and un-reflective that I don't think he even knows the details of half his positions. I'm pretty sure I could elucidate what Trumpism is far better than he himself could. His refusal to back down in the face of his critics and his gut pro-America sentiment were nice compared to the alternatives but I'd far rather have a Polk who not only has controversial beliefs but has the intelligence and persistence to see them through to implementation.
I would rather have Kevin McCarthy as speaker.

In Michigan, in 2018, we put no-excuse absentee voting to a statewide popular vote. We Republicans opposed the ballot initiative. I personally voted against the ballot initiative.
But we lost. A large majority voted for the change. Just like large majorities voted against the Trumpist Republicans who were nominated in Trump-dominated Republican primaries. We ended up with Democrats as governor, attorney general and secretary of state. Replacing incumbent Republicans in each case. If there really was some kind of Trump ‘silent majority’ in Michigan, they couldn’t be bothered to turn out in Michigan.
Chuck, I really don't understand your complaint- you got what you wanted in this past election- the Democrats in complete control.
As for the ballot initiative in Michigan, that just proves my point- Republicans will bear their necks for the ax.
And no one believes you voted against it, Chuck, because your very own words suggest you would have done anything to defeat Trump, including voting for mail in voting.
Trump should sit back and enjoy life. Why bother with the political shitheads who simply want more opportunities to deflect from their own, miserable existence and failures.
Nancy is speaker because she raises a shit ton of money for other Ds.
Fundraisers are the ones in congress who are rewarded with positions...not much to do with expertise.
Trump could raise a ton of money for the party.
That alone gives him a shot.
Trumpists still loving their fantasies.
But who knows, maybe March will be the magical month!
For the fantasy lovers.
Why QAnon Followers Think Donald Trump Will Be Sworn Back In as President on March 4
P.J. O'Rourke said that the tree co-equal branches of the Federal Government are Money, Television, and Bullshit. Trump checks all the boxes.

I got what I wanted; the defeat of Trump, and then the defeat of “Trump” again in the Georgia runoffs. I honestly expect that no one on these comments pages has had more nice things to say about Mitch McConnell than I have.

“QAnon followers still think Trump will be inaugurated — on March 4. National Guard will be ready.
Trump’s D.C. hotel hopes to cash in on QAnon true believers who may descend on Washington for his big comeback.”
”Trump will come back and the military will pull Biden out of the White House. Then all the debt goes away and the IRS is abolished. And then, at that point, Trump starts releasing all these hidden patents for free energy. It's going to be utopia and all the Democrats will be in Gitmo. Then, when that doesn't happen, they'll either create another fake date or cobble up reasons why Joe Biden is actually a hologram and Trump is actually in the White House."
Sort of like the idea that Clinton or Obama was going to run the UN after they left office. That would never, ever happen. If you are a diplomat from just about any country in the world, UN Secretary General is something to aspire to. You aren't going throw that opportunity away on somebody who was already the most powerful man in the world.
Ditto with this, Congress is going to pick one of their own. If you can't become speaker yourself, you give it to somebody who's been sitting in the Chamber as long as you have, somebody who's been through what you have, somebody who you owe and who owes you. And the idea that Trump would just quit if he wasn't made speaker is an ugly one that suggests that he really is in politics all for himself and his personal gratification. Congress would vote for somebody else just to make Trump go away.
Nobody really believes all that QAnon stuff. Even people who do believe some of it don't see or believe much of what gets dredged up in reports. It seems to be a lot of people coming up with theories to explain cryptic messages, but there's no authority dictating which theories are to be accepted. The reason this Trump coming back in March talk attracts attention is that it provides and excuse to keep the troops in Washington and focuses attention on Trump as a threat.
Qanon is trolling the stupid people on the left. The amusing part is they're the only ones who really believe it.
Trump should sit back and enjoy life..., while he can.
who needs Q-anonny when we've got the on-air talent at MSNBC.
Nobody really believes all that QAnon stuff.
It's a brilliant piece of performance-art/trolling concocted by amoral, apolitical kids living in their parents' basements. If believers could only see who's manipulating them . . .
Hispanics in this country save their money and buy a small business and/or a house. The women utterly despise any man who isn't working on one or the other and wouldn't consider marrying such a man. The Hispanics want citizenship. Naturally, they have property. And Biden, supposedly, will give citizenship to them. We'll see. But the idea that the Hispanic community will support the small business-wrecking, school-closing Dems forever and ever, amen is wrong. It comes off suburban dreams about the inner city. Now, I ask, who is better able to notice and act upon reality - Biden, the GOPe, or Trump? Biden can't get the vaccine distributed to his supporters in the inner city. The GOPe is "point shaving" on issues, looking bad occasionally, like Mitt with Candy Crowley. Just enough to lose. And there's the man who delivered a vaccine.
Chuck, what does the Lincoln Project think about this?

Don't know if anyone said it, but it would be hilarious to see Trump as Speaker behind Biden while Biden bumbles thru his state of the union. Media would not be able to ignore the faces, gestures, etc. Trump would be marking up the speech as Biden went. No rip-up gesture ala Nancy, but he'd show everyone the marked-up version afterward.
Yancey Ward: "Chuck, I really don't understand your complaint- you got what you wanted in this past election- the Democrats in complete control."
To be fair to our pro-marxist far left LLR-lefty Chuck, he and his pals have been quite clear that they will not be satisfied until the American Soviets are fully in power at every level of government and all far left democrat-Soviet policies have been adopted.
That has been LLR-lefty Chuck's primary objective for at least 6 years now with his clear second objective being defending establishment pedophiles.
The only thing you need to know about whether Trump should become Speaker is that Nancy Pelosi is generally regarded as a fairly effective Speaker. Also Paul Ryan. Think of it this way: If you had Babe Ruth on your roster, would you use him as a pitcher?
John Quincy Adams wasn't speaker material either, but he became one of the House's most fervent abolitionists. Trump is likewise a fervent foe of racism, and as President accomplished more for Black America than any other President in memory, so to that extent the analogy holds.
IF THE REPUBS DON'T RETURN US TO PAPER BALLOTS "FUGEDABOUT IT"
I implore all you layabouts to stop this obsession with Trump. Trump is finished as long as the GOP exists.
You need to get your state governments in line to maximize federalism and nullification of the feds.
The states are where the future can be won.
In 2022, Trump should run for Senate in New York or run for Congress from the 14th District in New York.
You need to get your state governments in line to maximize federalism and nullification of the feds.
Republicans did quite well in November:
Republicans Won Almost Every Election Where Redistricting Was At Stake
...the end result was just about the best-case scenario for Republicans. As the map below shows, Republicans are set to control the redistricting of 188 congressional seats — or 43 percent of the entire House of Representatives. By contrast, Democrats will control the redistricting of, at most, 73 seats, or 17 percent.

Trump. A savior? If you want to use religious imagery, he was John the Baptist. The heat is coming. Trump wasn't the heat, he just warmed things up.
Who doesn't want a savior? Who doesn't want to be released from the drudgery and pain of this life. The envy...the Pride...the sickness?

A Trump move in ‘22 would likely reveal true colors of GOP Swamp dwellers. All who block Trump from leadership will be driving a nail in GOP coffin. “Republican” is a broken brand and will never be fixed. No more wasted effort on constant rehab and false hopes. NONE!
Time for the American or Constitution Party.
Very entertaining idea.
The news media are dying for Trump-the-boogie-man stories. The "insurrection" yackathon can't last. JoeMala has to become center stage. A Trump run for anything shifts scrutiny away from Dem incompetence.
