My wife teaches HS Art and has been teaching on-line for more than half of the 2019-2020 year. It is pretty clear to her that the less educationally motivated kids and parents struggle the most with on-line learning. However, all the kids seem to be struggling to a large extent.

The teachers are doing fine, although my wife hates teaching on-line.

Does she vote for representation in her school district, city and state? Are the people running the government she says that black people distrust people that she voted for? Does her distrust extend to the lawmakers and government functionaries - most of whom are liberal and many of whom are black?

The article mentions that many black parents do not want to send their kids back to 'hostile environments' in the classroom - by which the NYT means environments where they think discipline is discriminatory and punishments disproportionately meted out to black students. Could the 'hostile environments' also include schools where unruly kids are allowed to run roughshod over the other kids wanting to lear? How about gang violence and a hesitancy by the schools to punish predatory kids? Think maybe the black parents don't want their kids to be beaten up by other black kids? Maybe the NYT just doesn't want to mention THAT as part of the problem here.

There is no one who thinks the public schools look better since the Wuhan strain hit us and the schools closed. And they looked pretty bad before China graced us with their lab experiment.

The fact that Black Americans (as perceived by the NYT) are skeptical of their public schools is not a surprise. The fact that it took to this point for it to be coming out and spoken about in the NYT is one of those, better late than never moments.

The people who have been screwed over more than anyone by our public school 'system' are Black kids who have to go to the worst public schools in the parts of the cities where NO ONE would send their kids, if they had the choice. Oh yeah...there's that word: Choice.

For Democrats 'choice' refers to the ability to kill babies. For Black families- 'choice' should mean a choice of school. There is no other way to break the chain of multi-generational poverty. No government program will do it. 100 years of Democrats running those cities certainly hasn't done it. And no- Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are not about to do it. They're owned by the Teacher's Unions. You want choice? Quit voting in Democrats. They don't give a crap about your education.

Black people have absolutely no reason to trust the government. They have been getting told that the government has been the thing that gives you things since the Civil War. They have also been trained to expect that the government can give you things. It can. But it very seldom gives people what they want or expected, and that goes for everybody.

The goal of everyone in America should be to be as self-reliant from government as possible (with less to do they'll do far less damage) but here's the problem. Self-reliance might mean carrying a gun, but it also means not putting oneself in the position of needing to use it. It might mean farming potatoes in the middle of nowhere, but might also mean saving and prudently investing. It could mean avoiding police because you think they're dangerous, but it could also mean not doing something that would draw that kind of attention in the first place.

Do. Not. Trust. Government. The trick to self-reliance is how you get there, not where you begin.

The relentless focus on race in this newspaper is going to serve to create more societal division. It perversely lends credibility to racism, and stereotypes in general. The fact is this: humans are defined by more than their race, lumping all “black people” into a category is wrong, regardless of the intention. Enough is enough.

I would opine that the majority of problems facing the Black communities in the major urban areas are caused by BLACK elected officials and Black bureaucrats because the majority of the elected officials and bureaucrats in the urban areas are Black, as are a majority of the school teachers and school administrators. You don't have a problem because of racism, you have a problem because of incompetence and a lot of that incompetence emanates from Black people you keep electing and supporting.

Every problem is not caused by racism. In fact, practically none of them are today. Get over your delusions of persecution and elect some good leaders who are capable of making a difference in the lives of you and your kids, and quit worrying about what their race happens to be.

That New York purposely stifles charter schools and makes it more and more difficult to operate them is a New York issue. That gets corrected by voting out the current school board, city council members, and the Mayor. Remember- these large cities are run via Party machine. There is no mandate for change. Far from it. If anything there is a mandate to keep greasing the same wheels that have given the party in power, more money and more power. The don't care about the kids. They care about their retirement package.

That woman should not have to worry a minute about getting to the 'mostly white school's twenty minutes away'. If their market was truly free, truly open, there would be charter schools & trade schools in such a quantity that in short time, there would be choice. REAL choice. And through competition, they would filter out which schools are the quality. And that howl you would hear would be coming from the Teacher's Union building.

New York has no choice by design. The hold on our kids to go to bad public schools and get deeducated has got to be put to an end. You would no more allow Randi Weingarten to take over your kids life than you would your own. Why do we, as a nation, allow it?

There is only one Mark Zuckerberg, etc. That is wrong thinking that all whites are in the same league as the Zuckerberg/Bezos crowd. The Google guy, Sundar Pichai isn't white. There are plenty of people in the US and around the world who are wealthy who are not white. If you don't understand that you are definitely not understanding life and reality. The guy who is most adament attacking "new age" fantasies is least realistic about the real world. Ironic.

The thing I've noticed is that when you surrender your will to being dependent on the government, or anyone else, you no longer have any choice. (AKA agency.) "They" get to make the choices for you with their own self interest forefront in their minds. You are not equal partners, you are collateral, and one size fits all. If you live in low income housing, for example, and the corporate owner decides to do a renovation, you get the renovation the corporation decides is in their best interest and makes them the biggest profit. What you like or want doesn't matter. You are there to provide an excuse for the owner to collect rents. You can be as angry as you want about it, but that doesn't make any difference. Anytime you let someone else make decisions for you they will, but it will be for their benefit, especially if they are doing that for their living.

There was a bit in that article that I tried to track down, but (unlike most specific incidents mentioned in NYT articles) it wasn't linked. I mean the statement that Detroit parents received "threatening" emails from school administrators about keeping their kids' Webcams turned on.

Several pp into Google (yes, should've used DuckDuckGo, my bad!) results, I found what they were talking about -- not the "threats," but at least the Webcam business. It seems that kids don't want their faces shown during Zoom. Or not (mostly) their faces, but whatever's behind them. Maybe they're getting their WiFi outside a Subway, or their home environment is crap, or their other siblings are distracting to the class, or their room is a mess. So they log in, but leave the camera off.

I do understand this, having been through school like everyone else here. Some kids will use anything to bully you, and the fact that the bullying material is now harder to access makes it all the more fun for a certain kind of twisted kid. Still, one of the points of class is for the teacher to see you, to make sure you're getting the material. And parents who turn off the Zoom camera make that impossible.

But what sort of "threats" were these? The NYT won't tell us, and neither will Detroit media, so far as I've been able to find out.

I wouldn't feel terrible about this specific thing, if I were you. The oligarchs in charge of American society expect whites to excel in similar fashion. "Learn to code," as it were, at least until they bring in a million Indians to undercut programmer wages. Some whites excel, others don't, others collapse entirely. This is partly due to unremitting hostility against some industries and businesses among the white subcultures, much as bigotry and many other factors hold back the black man. The police ruthlessly persecute black and white alike- the most obvious grievances against them don't make the mainstream media (like with Andrew Garner), while whites brutalized by cops are NEVER seriously covered.

Some of your grievances are entirely reasonable. Others less so. In some ways I think you actually don't go far enough with your demands! Nonetheless, it's all academic. The party that supposedly "represents" black people could not possibly care less about you, and the native majority in opposition feels the kind of resentment that usually explodes into ethnic violence. Some directed at your people, some directed at others.

You know, as I do, that some American slave masters took pride in their scientific, compassionate natures. Then the mask slipped, subjecting slaves to particularly violent reprisals until the cycle began anew. I absolutely believe that you live in fear of white psychopaths now, and I can assure you that it's going to get a great deal worse. It's your one and only life- what are you going to do about it?

(1) On an individual basis, the biggest obstacles blacks face are low average cognitive ability and high average aggression. Both have a biological component and thus are not amenable through social intervention.

(2) On a social basis, the biggest obstacles blacks face are neighborhoods full of black people. The kind you're likely to see featured on a WorldStar clip. The best thing for the "good ones" is to get out of those dysfunctional neighborhoods, which are not conducive to developing human potential.

(3) On a political level, all the damage the neoliberal reforms have wrought on the white working class have been doubly damaging to the black working class. The black middle class owes a big part of its existence to affirmative action in local, state, and federal employment and contracting.

(4) Despite a 50-year concerted effort to close the black-white gap in education, employment, income, etc., the results have been pretty much bupkis.

Matt,

It's interesting that an elected School Board member would distrust the government and public schools - she's part of government and presumably one of the people who set policy for public schools. Or maybe she distrusts the government because she knows how it works.

Public school teachers -- and administrators -- disproportionately send their own kids elsewhere. This is not new; it's been going on as long as I've been alive. In fact, ISTR that in a thread a week or so ago (was it here? I rather think it was), a parent complained that the charter school "lottery" where s/he lived was rigged, in that teachers got "dibs" on getting their own kids assigned away from the hellholes where they themselves taught.

That surprises me not at all. There are certainly teachers who would send their kids to the places where they teach. But they are the teachers whose environments are already decent, where there aren't metal detectors on the doors, and nine-year-old kids don't amuse themselves by heaving furniture at them. The last is a real problem, and the NYT and other papers are making it worse by saying that Black kids are "disproportionately" disciplined, or (worse), that "disabled" kids are. "Disability" conjures up a blind or deaf kid, or one in a wheelchair, or a "learning-disabled" kid. That is not who we are talking about here.

Requirements for a decent shot at learning something in school:

Everyone sits down.
Everyone (after opening and closing banter, as it were; I'm not completely inhuman) is quiet unless called on.
Kids raise hands (or otherwise signal if unable) before being called on and asked to speak.
No one gets out of his/her chair unless excused by the teacher.
No one cheats by any means. I think cell phones ought to be surrendered to the teacher at beginning of class and returned at end -- seems to work for my husband -- but if you think of something else, do it.
Violating rules involves calling the principal, who shall remove the student first, investigate later.

IMO, the only people who could possibly object to the above rules are people who want school to destroy itself.

Perhaps (based on past posts) you see her as a particularly successful apostle of New Ageiness? Tolkien wrote the whole Lord of the Rings as a response to New Age back in his time. Did you ever form an opinion on those books? And CS Lewis wrote That Hideous Strength for the same reason. So did JK Rowling in Harry Potter. Lots of Christians refuse to read Tolkien or Harry Potter because they see those books as promoting the heathen New Age, not baptizing it. Perhaps Oprah is sending two messages: one I hear which just sounds like pablum to me. The other is appealing to some strand of opinion like that which Tolkien and CS Lewis noticed. And perhaps it's raging unchecked though I have to say I don't see it. Once somebody I was working with tried to tell me he could fly, (meaning he was a sorcerer I was told); and I just felt embarrassed that somebody would make such a ridiculous claim out loud.

Crack, I went over to watch the Patrice O’Neal video. 5:57 long. I managed about 2 minutes of it. I enjoy humor and funny things. The audience, largely black , kept laughing and laughing in that 2 minutes of absolutely unfunny monologue. So if I watch it to the end- will there actually be something funny? A worthwhile joke? Or maybe he’ll walk across the stage, see a banana peel, point it out, and carefully step over it into a hole.

Yup. People are lining up to teach inner-city kids, and have no disciplinary powers, can't expel, can't flunk..who wouldn't sign up for that sweet gig?

I agree - there's not much funny about a nation that treats blacks and whites so differently - while it's whites insist it doesn't.

Yeah, some have this little niggling feeling that WE'RE NOT SUPPOSED TO BE HERE. That makes ther next move difficult.

I don't even know why you guys talk - I know you hate us. Most blacks know you hate us. Your hatred comes through with every word.

You are what you are, and you ain't shit nobody likes.

Oh play me the world's smallest violin. I trudge through the depths of human cruelty and depravity towards one another on a daily basis, so save me your sad sack whinging. I don't know who "you guys" are, but I most certainly think you're filled with self-pity.

White people are both obtuse and cruel.

Black people exist at that terrible intersection of high self-esteem and low ability.

You've got whole swaths of Americans, existing as corks in the ocean, in a nation demanding we be more than it's ever been to us.

I think there's a lot of truth in that statement. On the other hand, as Senator Jay Billington Bulworth noted, "I mean - come on! You can have a Billion Man March! If you don't put down that malt liquor and chicken wings, and get behind someone other than a running back who stabs his wife, you're NEVER gonna get rid of somebody like me!"

I accept that social structures play a role in outcomes, but so does agency. That said, what are a couple of social changes that you think would be most efficacious in improving the black condition?

Anglo-Americans are just now beginning to realize what life has an ethnic group has in store for them. It's easy not to think of yourself as an ethnic group when your culture pervades and predominates.

Have you ever read Albert Murray's The Omni-Americans? I think he's essentially right that American culture is a creole culture, but I don't think that fact gets you as far as Murray believes it should.

I repeat: I saw more dead bodies before I left elementary school than most people see in a lifetime. I was seven when a white hot bike chain was dropped on my bare back. I was 15 when I was hit in the stomach with a table leg - while sleeping - only to catch a sock to the jew when I woke up. That was because I didn't listen to KISS. I got beat down by a gang because I listened to Led Zeppelin.

Now - that's a few scenes from before adulthood - give me your experience that compares.

Crack is right.

You people need to stop saying stupid shit like there is no racism.

Most of you would grow up as criminals if you had a single parent growing up in a democrat run shit hole with a completely failed schools that teach violence and regression.

Most of us are coddled and pampered. I didn't know what the world was really like until I went out and saw it.

It doesn't hurt anything to admit Crack has a point. Black people are treated like shit. Poor white people are treated like shit. A lot of people are treated like shit.

Stop with the sneering and get involved in pushing school choice and police reform.

This is stupid. Almost all of those Trillions went to bureaucrats. At most 30% made it out to people in the form of direct payments and it was delivered in ways that were designed to destroy the nuclear family and the ability to work.

I'm sorry about your tough times. People should buy your music. Every time you post after you make your point you should put your blog address and suggest we go over there and listen to song X which says it better than words. Over there keep explaining how to buy songs. People like me take forever to notice things outside the literary tradition.

Your point about how everything is being rewritten - I do understand that is happening. I didn't realize how much Oprah was financing. I guess what you're saying there is that we think she's over but she's pouring her millions into re-writing history. Do you know the name of her company? Or has anyone looked into her point of view?

Tolkien was against the New Age. He saw it as a return to paganism but he was trying to draw those who were attracted by the New Age into an understanding that whatever the age there is a right and a wrong. So he had New Age elements, themes from paganism past, which he wove into a story parallel to Christianity - not it, not opposed to it. I'm talking about the book - the movie was New Age.
In the Lord of the Rings Sauron organizes and rises and nobody does anything. Some deny, some sell out, some say it's too far away to matter. The point we understand from the author is that everyone is equally threatened but their old wars and harms separate them and Sauron works to make it worse. All the same "one ring to rule them all/And in the darkness bind them." Some of them get it. They go to war. Aragorn says:
"Sons of Gondor! Of Rohan! My brothers! I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me! A day may come when the courage of men fails, when we forsake our friends and break all bonds of fellowship. But it is not this day. An hour of wolves and shattered shields when the age of Men comes crashing down! But it is not this day! This day we fight! By all that you hold dear on this good Earth, I bid you stand! Men of the West!"

Tolkien was writing of our time and there are millions, millions who have read that book and understand the issue. So there millions with you - only you have a new insight into a new variant. If you could explain how Oprah is a variant version of the New Age people would get it. And if you could explain that then we could work against it. It might be more dynamic than trying to get the schools to re-open or it might be the little thing off to the side that you have to do to get the schools open.

As to the money spent I agree with you completely...it's why I claim that blacks have to help themselves.

Is it really racists telling them that them need to help themselves?

This isn't 50's Alabama. There is a template that can be followed to a normal life and blacks have access to it if they wanted to...but blacks call it acting white.

All you are doing is comparing apples and oranges.

If you and all of your white friends grew up in the same circumstances as Crack and his friends then I think statistics would even up real fast as far as crime and dropout rates and murder rates.
