Except most of those things we can't do right now, Bob....

Thanks, Bob.

I'll drive right over to an orphanage or prison, demand to be let in and cheer up those worse off than me. Play football with the orphans, read to the prisoners. And I can do it on days other than Christmas, too.

The utter vacuity gives me the blues on Christmas.

I wish everyone a Merry Christmas.

This clip is actually about 9 or 10 years old. It's been on YouTube for years.

I think Lucy's advice to Charlie Brown was that he needed involvement.

Thanks, Will. I was under no delusion that this was new.

That's a feeble excuse, what with it being false and all that.

"A Chicago actress and her foundation brought 3,000 toys, food, and countless smiles to the West Garfield Park neighborhood for the holidays Wednesday.

As CBS 2’s Marissa Parra reported, people waited for more than two hours in their cars for the giveaway, and there were lines that stretched over 15 blocks – dramatically underscoring the need."

"“We try our best to help lift people’s spirits and help relieve them of some stress with some food,” said Sands, who created both the Utah Navajo COVID-19 Relief Program and Warming Hogans, a firewood project to serve Utah Diné elders and residents of the Utah chapters."

+

"What began as a small, grassroots COVID-19 relief effort by military veterans in Phoenix, who gathered donations and delivered groceries to veterans on Navajo, has now grown into a major collaboration with the Barry and Peggy Goldwater Foundation."

From the sound of it, I presume it's from the "Theme Time" radio show.

Doing for others is the most selfish thing you can do, because it makes you feel so good.

Plenty of volunteer activities still available, and can even be done "safely"Check if you are excessively concerned about the virus. Check with local churches, food banks, etc. Or donate blood. Or shovel the driveway for an elderly neighbor.

Wilbur বলেছেন...

Ha! When I lived in Illinois, I used to routinely shovel off my neighbors walks and driveway after I did mine.

I loved the exercise, so my motive was selfish, of course.

There are tons of things you can do to lend a hand. Hold a door open, let someone with a few items in front of you at the checkout. Off to take a persons cart to the cart corral. Shovel a walk, take an elderly neighbors dog for a walk. Smile at the cashier and tell them they are doing a good job. Its the simple things. Our Salvation Army never has enough bell ringers, but they have year round opportunities.

What do you mean, "we"?

Some things are more important than the diktats of our overlords or the fears of our Karens.

If you get a stimulus check, be it $600 or $2000, and don't need it, give it to someone who does.

Gotta love this guy!

Excellent.
Spot on. Thank you.

btw- not to brag or toot my own horn but instead of spending the day with family - me an mine are making 30 sandwich packed lunches and handing them out to the homeless.
Not sure how this is going to work, but it's an experiment.

My counter is covered with sandwich bread. and not the crap kind - I got the good stuff.

Orphanages disappeared in the US sometime in the 1960s, replaced by the foster care system. But maybe one could still help out inside the walls of Red Wing?

Sounds like Theme Time to me. Like the way he says you don't need anyone to tell you how to feel better, especially from himself. And then he tells you how to feel better.

I LOVE what Dillion said there. Just love it.

You've won me over. I'm a huge fan now.

In conversation the other day I had someone helpfully advise me to start a Simple Kindness club. I kindly thought to myself, Sweetheart, you have no damn idea what I do that I don’t talk about.

In my Purpose Driven Life, I do what I believe God wants me to do: be of service to others. In keeping with humility, I won't mention some of the things I do to keep gratitude in my life. Also, there are not enough people on this post for me to devote the time to it.

Coronavirus or no coronavirus, even a university professor could figure out how to help someone less fortunate than her — if she truly put her mind to it.

Dylan has gotten better every year for a while.

That song that Adele covered - he wrote it in his late 60s right?

What Unknown said. What he said!

I discovered this when I did volunteer medical work with Kosovar refugees during the Kosovo War. Those desperate people would constantly effusively thank me for what we were doing there. I wanted no part of this adulation, honestly, since that was not remotely what it was all about, but of course had to be gracious. But I would tell many of them something that they could not well understand - that they were the gift to me. I felt that acutely, constantly; it was like a drug hit every day. I cannot overemphasize this. And I remember thinking that very thing at the time, that it almost felt selfish. It was a marvel to me.

There are lots of things one can do. My wife always sent some cards to shut ins and her favorite toddlers but she has ramped up. Pick up food for church pantries. Make food for others. Buy warm socks and mittens for poor people and deliver them - the homeless are outdoors quite a bit. Recall people who have helped you and say kind things to them.

My stars, there's a world of things to do.

Ingachuck'stoothlessARM বলেছেন...

you gotta serve somebody

As for the idea that giving is selfish, it is a half-truth. If it were a whole truth there would be a lot more of it, wouldn't there? We have some deep wiring that does give us pleasure in virtue of any sort, but it is a learned, trained response that is mostly a long-term joy.

It's all there in the Greek philosophers. What do they teach in the schools these days?

Generous peripheral bought nice McDonalds lunch to give to homeless beggr on the corner. He told her "i don't eat that crap".

Thankfully, most are more appreciative.

AIV - thanks for that!

Fullmoon.
Twas a success. Drove all over B-town. Then to Golden and down Colfax into downtown Denver.

Most were really happy. A few were like eh' someone already gave me a sandwich. Tried hard to find loners who were passed out somewhere. Once roused, they were the most appreciative. We were not looking for thank-yous - but for real "oh wow - food!" kind of a response. That was the response most of the time.

In Denver, near Colfax - pulled over to find a group. The larger the group - the more awkward I felt approaching. So kept going and found a sweet older woman all on her own. Chatted with her. Her story was heart breaking. I vowed not to give money because the odds are high it goes to ciggies or drugs etc.. but gave her some money so HOPEFULLY she could find a place to sleep inside for the night. Might go back and check on her tomorrow.

FullMoon বলেছেন...

@ BidenFamilyTaxPayerFundedCrackPipe...

Sounds great...not gonna lie, I give money 'cause it's easy and convenient. Let them use it towards buying food, drugs, cigarettes, sex, or a room for the night. Whatever makes them happy for a minute.
