What I said as I surveyed the damage to the places on Capitol Square here in Madison this morning.

As we drove around the square, I made a recording of myself so I'd have a list:

"Home Savings Bank, 2 broken windows, broken door. The toy store has 2 broken windows. Fromagination [the cheese store] has 2 broken windows and a broken door. Park Hotel... The Post, the restaurant there, has 2 broken windows.... Starbucks looks completely intact, it's open, it looks completely inviting, looks nice. Credit Union House is unbroken. Walgreen's windows are unbroken, but I see a guy sweeping up at the door, so the door was broken. Tavernakaya restaurant isn't broken, but Park Bank has one broken window. Colectivo [coffeehouse] has 2 broken windows. Arch, a hairstyling place, has 3 broken windows, the whole front is broken. Graze, the restaurant, Graze, has 3 big windows broken. L'Etoile, the restaurant next to it has no broken windows.... It says 'Fuck 12' at Center 7 but the windows aren't broken. Wait Chiropractic is crossed out and it says 'BLM Now.' The Old Fashioned — no damage to The Old Fashioned. No damage to the YMCA. 'Fuck 12' and 'Free the Guys' at the UW Credit Union.... There's the Post Office, they didn't get the Post Office. And then broken window on Merrill Lynch and 'Here are your premiums.' Wait, let me get a picture of that...."

IMG_9393

"Town Bank has a broken window, 2 broken windows, big picture windows at Town Bank. 'Let Them Know BLM' on the apartment building.... 3 broken windows at Cooper Tavern. Graffiti being whited out by painters at the Veterans Museum. The State Historical Museum has boards on the windows, it says 'Kill Killer Cops'.... The now-closed camera store has a broken window. State Farm Insurance is boarded up. And Grace Church is unharmed."

ADDED: Here's the Wisconsin State Journal report on what happened overnight:

Following a now-familiar pattern, the overnight destruction followed peaceful daytime protests against the police shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha Sunday. This time, the damage started just before 11 p.m. with a dumpster fire at the top of State Street. At least Walgreens, a liquor store and a glasses store were looted. Police responded with tear gas, pepper spray and sponge projectile rounds. Madison police Sgt. Galen Wiering reported that six arrests were made, with one person armed with a handgun at the time of arrest, and investigators will seek to identify additional suspects....

The Madison protest grew over the course of the night with just around 100 protesters at the beginning of the night and well over 1,000 later in the evening. At one point, the crowd filled two full blocks of State Street.... Several dumpster fires were set throughout Downtown over the course of the night as protesters marched on State Street, East Washington Avenue and the Capitol Square....

The looting started on State Street around 11:30 p.m. after a smaller group of around 100 people split off from the larger protest. The group of around 1,000 continued to march, chanting "Black Lives Matter," "This is a not a riot, this is a revolution" and telling each other to "Stay together."

Broken glass bottles and the smell of alcohol littered the 400 block of State Street after looters broke into Badger Liquor and stole bottles of liquor. Looters also took merchandise from Warby Parker, a glasses and sunglasses store on State Street. An hour and a half later at 1 a.m., items were stolen from the Walgreens on Capitol Square after the front doors were shattered. Many more businesses had windows shattered, including bars and restaurant on Main Street, the largely glass US Bank Plaza building and others on the Capitol Square....

Maybe the Wisconsin fires are similar, we just need to let them burn themselves out. Guys like Howard don’t care in the least if cops make it home to their kids, but most of us do. It’s a simple matter. When police are called for help, follow their instructions when they arrive on the scene, and folks stay safe.

I have yet to hear from the mewling Howards how they would propose that the scene should have played out. Precisely what risks are cops expected to take so that someone resisting an arrest isn’t shot while reaching into his car? My answer would be that the cop’s kids have every right to see the cop come home safely. Howard apparently says not so much.

And this is how we get Trump.

That "repatriations" is being taken seriously, and not mocked and laughed at, shows how far gone the liberal/left is. Basically, its just another way to pay off blacks so they'll continue to vote Democrat. Another benefit, like affirmative action, racial quotas, etc.

It will NEVER be a one time payment. Just like Amnesty, we'd have one and then another one would be proposed because the first one "didn't solve the injustice". You have to wonder about Center-Right people who are proposing it, or at least have no problem with it. Are they stupid or just so obsessed with money-making they think everyone can be bought off with $$?

Except people don't always act in good faith, and are often motivated by emotions, Religion, and political ideology. People often don't even agree on what is a "Problem". Reparations won't solve "The problem". They're not supposed to be a "Solution" - there are other motives at work.

traditionalguy: There is a saying in Texas: "One riot, one Ranger." It originated from an incident when a city applied to the governor for help with rioting citizens. One ranger was sent to quell the violence. When asked if he was all the help forthcoming, the Ranger replied, "How many riots do you have?"

One Ranger could quell a riot by determining leadership of the mob, arresting or incapacitating or, hell, just shooting, those very few individuals, and advising the rest of the now leaderless mob to disperse or suffer similarly. It worked then. It has worked since time immemorial.

A riot is a mob led into violence by a few agitators. After the agitators are removed, a mob isn't so much a riot as a crowd seeking exit from the area where agitators get removed.

Hm, violent criminal (with domestic violence in his past, IIRC) and an arrest warrant out on him resists arrest and gets shot.

What part of this is supposed to make me feel any sympathy for him?

If you are going to have any government that has a police force, then resisting arrest "successfully" enough will eventually get you shot.

So, Howard, are you ready to get rid of all government? Get rid of all police? No?
Then you don't get to legitimately whine about this. Because the only way gov't + police can survive is if everyone is convinced that "resisting arrest" will fail, and SHOULD fail

As to reparations, I'm all for them...I mean why not? We already flushed trillions down the toilet with the Great Society giveaways.

The problem is, nobody (the payer) wants to settle anything at the point of a gun. If reparations are the cure to rioting, then rioting is clearly extortion.

But if we do pay reparations, there should be conditions as constitutional amendments. We'll start with the abolition of all affirmative action. No more quotas, no more extra points on tests, no diversity hires. Also, the end to all checkboxes on all forms (census, any type of survey, etc.). The great god money will have finally made us all equal.

And should reparations come to pass, the first thing I will do is buy a Cadillac dealership. Let the re-transfer of wealth begin...

TestTube म्हणाले...

Crack, you might have a point.

If there were some offer of a specific dollar amount to absolve the payer and their descendants from a) further demands b) social opprobrium associated with past racism in the US, and c) mob or racially motivated violence, there would be a significant number of takers.

The rub is that you need an organization to guarantee these things, and also distribute the money. And that organization is going to need some teeth, both in hard and soft power.

Could that organization be governmental? Probably not going to happen because the fraction of the population that would agree to that deal would be too small to generate the political support.

So it has to be third party. And for a third party organization to have that sort of teeth, they will have to be extremely well-run, because that much money is going to leave the organization vulnerable to scandal and the hint of scandal.

Also, it would have to have an arm that was extra-legal to enforce the bans on social opprobrium and violence. So it would be necessary to be wily and powerful enough to keep the government from encroaching.

Also, it would have to be long-term -- decades or even centuries -- to ensure the guarantees that descendants would continue to benefit.

There have been some organizations like that. Some tended towards religious fanaticism. Some degenerated into protection rackets. Some became governments. All of them were very un-democratic, opaque, and exclusive.

If you want "law and order", then people can not be allowed to successfully resist arrest.

Period. Dot. End of sentence.

It doesn't matter if the arrest is illegitimate. The correction for that is that you sue the police, after all is done.

If you want a function civil society with laws enforced by the police, then when someone tries to resist arrest, one of three things needs to happen:
1: They fail, and get dragged off to jail, with extra charges added
2: They get injured to the point they can't fight any more, and go to the hospital
3: They get killed, and go to the morgue

You get shot trying to escape? Oh, well. You shouldn't have tried to escape

This isn't about self defense, this is about societal defense.

The cops are a bunch of racist pig harassing you? I'm sorry to hear that. You shoudl sue them, and try to get political action goign against the mayor and city council that let the cops be such racists. I would like to hear a step-by-step description of an alternate scenario that would have led to a better outcome. Would it have been better for a social worker to answer the 911 call? How would that have played out in a normal world? We have all seen video of someone resisting arrest who has reached into a car and came out shooting police officers. Is that an acceptable risk for a cop to take as an alternative to shooting someone in the back with an outstanding arrest warrant who is diving into his car while resisting arrest?

If there is anything controversial, it is the automatic assumption that cops are acceptable targets for the scumbags just so long as the scumbags don’t get shot or otherwise hurt. And make no mistake, this guy is a scumbag.

Very late comment I know, but are readers aware that the church burned in Kenosha was a Unitarian Universalist facility? Yes, Unitarians, the farthest-left and farthest-out of all American denominations, who probably shouldn't be called Protestant or even Christian in any real sense. From the Kenosha branch's website:

We, the members and clergy of Bradford Community Church Unitarian Universalist, are outraged at the violence perpetuated in the name of law enforcement on our people of color throughout our nation’s history and yesterday in Kenosha in the case of Jacob Blake for whose life we now pray.
Despite the fact that we cannot condone violent response to injustice, we understand and appreciate the anger and frustration that fueled the events of last night. While we are relieved that our church home mostly survived the inferno in the lot next door, we affirm that we would rather lose 100 buildings than one more life to police violence.
Some folks have already commented that our decision to display “Black Lives Matter” on our road sign in some way contributed to the fire or that our support of the BLM movement is hypocritical or “un-Christian.” Indeed, all lives do matter to us (that’s what “Universalist” means), but given the overwhelming and disproportionate injustice suffered by Americans of color we are compelled by our faith to speak up and affirm that Black Lives Matter too.
If this is not your faith, so be it, but it is most certainly ours and we ask that all folks be respectful in honoring our sacred calling to speak truth to power, protect the innocent, empower the disenfranchised and promote equity and compassion in human relations.
In the name of Love,

Diverse true warriors: 0

On the other hand a mob of blacks can deal with a lost raccoon pretty effectively, if not efficiently.

Actually, in West Africa, it was The Ashanti tribe that mostly sold captured enemies to the white buyers who stayed off the coast in fortified islands. In East Africa, it was Arabs and still is.

The main causal factors included the unquestioning loyalty to the Asante rulers and the Kumasi metropolis' growing wealth, derived in part from the capital's lucrative domestic-trade in items such as gold, slaves, and bullion...

And...

The Ashanti live in the Ashanti Region, specifically in the Ashanti capital of Kumasi, and, due to the Atlantic slave trade, a known diaspora of Ashanti exists in the Caribbean, particularly in Jamaica. Slaves captured by the Ashantis and sold to the British and the Dutch along the coasts were sent to the West Indies, particularly Jamaica, Barbados, Netherlands Antilles, British Virgin Islands, the Bahamas, Guyana, Suriname, etc. Ashanti were known to be very opposed to both the Fante Confederacy and the British people, as the Ashanti only traded with the Dutch in times of their ascension to becoming a hegemony of most of the area of present-day Ghana.

Jamaicans are 60% Ashanti, which might have something to do with their relative success in America. They were the sellers, not the slaves mostly.

If they didn’t pay the Dane geld, whoever they didn’t kill were sold as slaves to the Muslims. That’s what the Vikings were, slave raiders in Europe. The Greeks had Greek fire, so they were left alone. Basically the Muslims had a huge silver find in Afghanistan which they used to mint coins to buy slaves from Europe and silks from China. These coins have been found in Viking grave cairns. Osama bin Laden said after 9-11 that “even the slaves are celebrating” referring to free black Africans.

The Romans enslaved the main part of the population of Jerusalem, sacked and burned the town including the “First Temple” that was built by King Solomon, and used the loot and the slaves to build the Roman Colosseum, there is a plaque to this effect still in the Colosseum. They got the “golden lampstand” supposedly designed by Moses, King Solomon’s golden table, etc, and put them in a Museum. The Ark of the Covenant disappeared at that time and has never been recovered. I suspect the Muslims have it locked up good and tight in Egypt, likely believing the account in Samual that whoever looked upon it would be killed by God on the spot. Supposedly God killed seventy curious Israelites who couldn’t resist a peek at the tablets of the Ten Commandments.

My guess is that the Ashkenazi Jews are descended from the enslaved people who built the Colosseum, eventually they migrated to Europe and were driven east to Poland and Russia by the “Christians” in power then, we all know the rest of the story.

If you want "law and order", then people can not be allowed to successfully resist arrest.

I don't disagree. But, the penalty for resisting arrest is not death. They knew who he was. They had his license plate number. They could have followed him home and called for back up on the way. If we have cops that can't figure out how to arrest someone without shooting them, they should pick a different career.

Check out something I found on the internet:

"No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the Militia, when in actual service in time of War or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offence to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation."

I landed on Brockmeyer, when looking for something to watch, a couple of years ago. Hank Azeria and Amanda Peete. Its about a MLB play by play broadcaster in the depths of his addictions. Going on an on air rant about catching his with with another man, and his losing everything and ending up woking a single A club, PA announcer, in nowhere America.
Very low brow humor that appeals to my baser instincts and prurient interests.

Anyway I watched the three seasons, and thought it was cancelled, but low and behold, they did another season!. So I popped the corn and dialed up the 1st show. It is set in the future. 2024? maybe. It portrays as dystopian USA in the midst of a handfull of public uprisings.
Very prescient. The 2020 season is not as funny (warped) as the previous seasons, so I haven't binged on the whole season yet, but I thought I would call out the erie future cast of the show. Just watch the 1st episode of the last season, and see what you think, its only 22 minutes no commercials.

Can you imagine the good a man like Crack could have done had he accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior? I won't say Clarence Thomas level, because Justice Thomas is a greatest of all time level American, but it ain't nothing like it is now neither.

OK....so the police should do exactly....WHAT...when someone actually fires on them, tries to steal their weapon to use on them, or acts in a manner that a reasonable person would consider an attempt to gain access to a deadly weapon to use against them? Are you unaware that Jacob Brooks was tased in an attempt to arrest him w/o killing him?

As for "what you found on the internet: apparently you don't understand that a retired con law prof runs this blog, and thus attracts quite a few people with legal backgrounds. I have not read the whole thread, but most are thinking about reparations as a lump sum payment. That would be a disaster because

1) it'll fail to significantly improve the life of most recipients. In FL they studied winners of moderate size lotteries ($50-150K-something like that.) It had little to no long term impact on most winners.

2) Progs see a failure and declare the problem is not going big enough so there would be larger repetitions of the same failure.

If you are going to do reparations, , I would not withhold FICA for ADOS but grant them the benefits they would have earned upon eligibility. This provision would be an amendment and automatically expire after, say, seventy five years.

Reason include:

1) a lifetime benefit, not a windfall
2) the ability to build wealth if this money is saved (more than you would get from SS.)
3) It benefits the poorest most. Social Security deductions cap out at ~$137K. If you are making that much you are not suffering economically from racism.

If I had to do reparations, that's the type of program I'd implement: targeted at the poorest and geared toward the long term.

I think that I can see what you are trying to point out, but that is not how that is interpreted. As someone pointed out, the Constitution is not a suicide pact. Exigent circumstances are typically more than sufficient to delay the necessity of a Judge issued warrant. Etc.

You are OK with a man on an outstanding warrant, and possible sex assault charge, taking kidnapping the children in the car he was trying to drive away with? There were kids in the car. The man was not cooperating, and had already wrestled free from the officers. I think taking out a kidnapper and saving children is a good decision.

That's a strawman. Of course cops are entitled to self defense. Some of the commentators above argued that resisting arrest is in and of its self justifies shooting a suspect. That is what I was responding to.

I already addressed the "self defense" argument: if you or I shoot a man in the back while he is getting into his car, do you think for one second "self defense" going to get you an acquittal? I think cops should be held to the same standard as you or me. Do you disagree?

Is this cop fanfic? I haven't read anywhere that he was kidnapping his kids. Apparently it was one of the kid's birthday and he got to watch his dad shot seven times within feet of him. The penalty for resisting arrest is losing.

Yes, they knew who he was, and his address. There was an outstanding warrant for his arrest, which meant that having that information wasn't sufficient, because if it was he would already have been in jail.

The penalty for resisting arrest is losing.

Right there, right then. If that means you get killed, or crippled, or put in a coma, tough shit.

You do not have the right to resist arrest. You have the right to sue the police for a civil rights violation if they arrest you sufficiently wrongly.

"If you fight enough you get to run away" == "destroy civil society." Because that says "lowlifes aren't subject to the law, only decent people."

And if that's teh case, well kiss goodbye any respect for the law.

You have a right to a trial. If you want it, don't resist arrest

I said, correctly, that if the cops need to shoot a person resisting arrest to get him to stop resisting arrest, that shooting is inherently legitimate

1: You're not a cop. You haven't been blessed by the State to use it's power to arrest people.
2: If someone has a gun in his hands and is turning around to shoot me, I damn well have the right to shoot and kill him first.

If you're fighting with some cops, and then put your hands in a place where they can't see them, and where there might be a gun, you're probably going to get shot.

And you'll deserve it.

You do not have the right to flee the scene of a crime. You do not have the right to resist arrest. You do not have their right to demand that the cops arrest you later.

The penalty for resisting arrest is losing. If you raise the ante enough that teh cops need to kill you to make sure you lose, that's your fault, not theirs.

Don't want to get shot? Don't resist arrest

Then the rape started.

It actually can be legal to shoot, and maybe even kill, someone who is trying to escape the police. For example, it probably would have been legal for Officer Darren Wilson to have shot Big Mike Brown in Ferguson, MO, to prevent his escape. The key is that he was an escaping violent felon. Not a suspect, but had committed acts that were considered violent felonies under MO law, in the presence of a police officer, in Brown’s assault on Wilson while he sat in his Tahoe, and his attempt to take Wilson’s gun away from him. The theory Is that the officer is protecting the community from someone known to be a violent felon. (Note - the crimes constituting violent felonies subject to this provision are listed in the MO statutes, and not surprisingly include attempted murder).

Of course, in the end, Wilson was easily acquitted on the basis on justified self defense. The forensics were clear - Brown had attacked Wilson in his Tahoe, trying to take his gun, then very soon after that died attacking Wilson again. At 6’3” 295 lbs, Brown was big enough to play line in college football. His size alone constituted a deadly threat, should he have closed with Wilson.

Most often though, the justification for an officer involved shooting is self defense. Typically, it involves seeing, or thinking they saw, a deadly weapon. The limiting factors are the usual ones for self defense: subjective and objective reasonableness and that the threat was imminent.

Police officers have the same right to self defense as anyone else, with a couple of differences. First, in the relatively few states that retain the Retreat Doctrine, it does not apply to the police. Second, normally, if someone threatens deadly force against you, you can respond with deadly force in legally justified self defense. Not so, if the police threaten deadly force against someone - that person is almost never privileged to respond to that threat with deadly force, and if they threaten the police with such (even if the police threatened deadly force first), the police are almost always the party legally privileged to use deadly force, while the other party is not. That means that if the police threaten you with deadly force, you then pull a gun in what otherwise would be self defense, they can then shoot you in legally justified self defense, and your shooting back would be attempted (or actual) homicide, if not murder.
