No linear time?

Urban Dictionary sez:

Black People Time
Also know as BPT, is the mean solar time at which the average black person arrives, adopted as the standard time in a zone that includes all African Americans. BPT delays usually run from 15-45 minutes.

"Linear fucking"? Is that some epithet for missionary position, or heterosexual sex, or what? Maybe the opposite of a circle jerk, the only SJW-approved form of achieving orgasm.

tcrosse म्हणाले...

Hey, kids. What time is it??

There are taggers in Austin, SOLO and ISME, who compete to mark up construction site fencing, street signs and other walls. They are as nothing to the one plaintive tag I read last spring, about a month after lockdown started, that read, "Can we all just stop now?"

The entertaining pastime of correcting Antifa and BLM slurs against the cops into praiseful statements continues here, as well. And I noticed I'm not the only one changing "Defund the APD" to "Fund the APD" with a few judicious lines of spraypaint. My fellow re-artist painted a large heart over the D & E of DEFUND. Nice.

n algorithm is said to take linear time, or O(n) time, if its time complexity is O(n). Informally, this means that the running time increases at most linearly with the size of the input. More precisely, this means that there is a constant c such that the running time is at most cn for every input of size n. For example, a procedure that adds up all elements of a list requires time proportional to the length of the list, if the adding time is constant, or, at least, bounded by a constant.

Ampersand म्हणाले...

Movements like this are deeply millenarian. They proclaim the imminent end of days. They must abolish time, because time will unmask their pretenses. What happens the day after we think we've achieved social justice? How do we reallocate the previous day's unfairness? And the day and days after that?

They can always hide behind a claim of noble intentions. I no longer regard that as a valid claim.

Linear time is white supremacy.

Thomas Cahill, in The Gifts of the Jews, says that one of their gifts was linear time. Most civilizations in the ancient near east believed time was an unending cycle, based on the cycles of nature and agriculture. In that system, you are locked in — if you’re a peasant, your ancestors were peasants and your children were peasants. If you were kings, you had a royal bloodline and your family would be kings forever. Many agricultural societies practiced some form of human sacrifice as necessary to keep the cycle going. The Jews developed the idea that time was linear — circumstances could change. You could progress. Wherever you were at one point in time didn’t mean you’d always be there. You could become more than a peasant. A wandering nomad could become patriarch of a mighty nation. Doesn’t surprise me that the Critical Race Theorists would start going after that (you were born with white fragility, and will always have it, and your children unto the generations...)

Right. That's what we talking about. Knock that shit off!

"no linear fucking time"---what? Is this day zero? They demand justice, but what would satisfy them? No jails? how convenient for looters and killers.

Nihilism.

Here's a funny story. I got old and realised Medicare didn't pay for anything unless you paid them every month. Wait, what. Democrat politicians are screaming for Medicare for All. Do they know that Medicare doesn't cover anything unless you buy Health Insurance! OK, I'm a carpenter. I admit I'm not the sharpest tool in my tool box. I didn't know that after a lifetime paying into Medicare, I have to buy Medicare Health Insurance, which few Doctors will accept anyway.

Fine, I qualify for the VA because I served on the line during the war. I'm old, but in good health and my neighbor who served in Hawaii for a coupla years after me, during PEACETIME became a drunk and drug addict, went to the VA and they fell all over themselves accommodating his wasted life. I am not immune from the siren call of 'FREE'.

So...I figure, well...I guess it wouldn't hurt to have the option. I figure if someone finds me unconscious on the floor from a heart attack, it would help if the VA helped out. I didn't think I was entitled, because I had no Service related injury, but the VA said I was. I had a moment of weakness.

So I go to a VA satellite office where I meet this 20-something yr old kid who has a checklist. He asks,"Have you ever considered suicide?"

Anyone remember Jean Paul Sartre? Being and Nothingness" As I recall, the first Paragraph stated, 'Every man should ask himself whether or not he should commit suicide?'. At the time, I thought that was clever.

I repeated that to my inquisitor. He demanded I go immediately to the Hospital for evaluation. I declined so he called the police. Ain't this boogie a mess? Whoa!

I met a very nice Police Officer (20 something) who recognized the confusion. He let me go. 10 years ago.

Tiffany and Kineisha go to the VA to get their pap smears because they served in Personnel at Ft Leavenworth, and now they're 'Veterans'. Good for them.

Narr म्हणाले...

The more I ponder the image, the sadder it is.

Laborious, rigid block lettering, almost like a stencil in the lack of personality and style.

Hercules, thanks for your service. My older brother had been in Thailand and as a "vietnam era veteran" (whose only claim to my respect was that service) he abused the VA for hospital and educational benefits like the easily manipulated bureaucracy it was back then.

I won't belabor the point, but it astonished me how much they were willing to do for an alcoholic, drug-addicted, woman-beating, sometime jailbird because he was a veteran.

Steve Martin: I feel good tonight. I finally got something I always wanted and that's important. It really is.

Well, you see so many people with hostages nowadays and you say "Hey, I'd like some, too!" So I've got three of 'em, they're really nice people. We get along great, they're tied in a sack outside at the top of the flagpole. And I'm gonna blow 'em up at midnight, too.

Unless, of course, I get my three demands.

Bilwick म्हणाले...

I'm guessing that the objection to "linear time" as its roots in the "It's Our Culture" school of argument, wherein things that White folks find objectionable in lower-class Black culture, and that White bigots see as universal among Blacks, are defended by Blacks with the "It's Our Culture" defense. I first became aware of this when that Black athlete was accused of participating in dog-fighting, and his defenders protested "But that's our culture!" A couple o0f years ago, some well known Black singer was criticized for always being late for gigs and recording sessions. She said, essentially, that punctuality was "a White people thing," thus giving a kind of legitimacy to the White bigot's canard of "Colored People Time (CPT). I imagine that whoever was shaking a metaphorical fist at "lineartime" was in a similar mindset.

Narr म्हणाले...

CPT is no canard. It has affected both my private and public life. (This is NOT to say that Black people can't be punctual if they choose, just that many choose not to.)

David Landes' book Revolution in Time (available nearby) is an account of how mechanical time gradually displaced natural time in the West, and eventually elsewhere. It was a centuries-long struggle against PPT (Peasant People Time).

Some history that is often forgotten is that reformers like Muhammed Ali (Egypt 1830s) invested huge sums in high-tech (cotton mills IIRC) but could never overcome the time norms of the culture. That's still the case in most of the undeveloped world.
