"I will bet you that no one has bombed harder than me."

For reference, here's the famously terrible intro routine from the 1989 Oscars:

I don’t know, but if that lady wants to show up at my place in that Snow White outfit, I will be happy to make it worth her while.

I tried. I like Joe Rogan, I like Rob Lowe. But at about 4 minutes, I hit my lifetime limit for hearing the word "bomb."

Now those are some lyrics.

So , ya goin' to the convention this year, Rob?

I like Rob Lowe. I think he may be somewhat right of center but is managing to stay afloat career-wise in La La Land so kudos to him for that.

He's a pretty boy who's aged really well, unlike Brad Pitt, another pretty boy, who hasn't.

Funny! I forgot how bad it was. Kinda like, George Lucas' masterpiece film, Howard the Duck.

I recall reading an interview or article about Rob Lowe a few years after his porn tape scandal. He had been lying low during the height of the scandal and he was hiding out at the bar in a VIP club of some sort, like the Viper Room, when Jack Nicholson and some other heavy hitter like Martin Scorsese came in. They spotted him sitting over there and walked over and Jack did his eye brow thing and said, "So what's new?" with a big smile on his face. I recall it being a big deal for Lowe because it cracked him up and he had not laughed in quite a while. I can see Nicholson doing this like a movie scene. He would be the perfect guy to lighten you up.

It's an even more vivid memory for Rob Lowe than it would be for the rest of us, because he's only about five years older than he was in 1989.

Jaq म्हणाले...

Robe Lowe is the person who should have don’t the “Don’t hate me because I am beautiful” ad.

I haven't seen the entire podcast, only clips, but I'm stunned at Rob Lowe's wit!

I kind of liked it. It was campy and didn't take itself too seriously, something today's Hollywood lacks.

I especially enjoyed that the stars from yesteryear were aware of their place as yesteryear. I noticed how many Boomer's in that '89 audience are still trying to hold on to their leading star fame. It's kind of pathetic. Lowe is a good guy. I think he knows his place. The Grinder was hilarious. Probably one of the last shows I watched in TV.

Rob Lowe is 56. He really did age well. But he sure did get in trouble. Wikipedia:

"In 1988, Lowe was involved in a sex scandal over a videotape of him having sex with a 16-year-old girl he met in a nightclub. They were videotaped the night before the Democratic National Convention in Atlanta, Georgia. As the age of consent in Georgia was 14 at the time (until 1995 when it was raised to 16), both were of legal age to engage in sexual activity, although 18 was the legal age to be involved in such a recording. At the time, Lowe was campaigning for Michael Dukakis."

In the Joe Rogan podcast, Lowe talks about the drugs and alcohol that flowed his way in the 80s. He recovered and completely abstains now (he says).

I have to admit, when I read the headline in RSS, I thought this was about Trump.

I didn't watch it THEN, and I'm not agonna watch it now.

There was a lot of talent, money, and imagination that went into that embarrassment. It's not like that other memorable moment when the great stars of Hollywood jumped to their feet to applaud the triumph of that noted child rapist. There was nothing premeditated or overproduced about that display. That was a spontaneous moment of joy and moral failure.....I watched it. It wasn't just bad but it kept finding new ways of being bad. Rob Lowe was more an innocent bystander than a perp of the crime. Whatever happened to the woman who played Snow White. She probably thought that that was her big moment, and so it was......Roy Rogers looked good in a powder blue cowboy shirt with lots of white fringe. He blended in. Cyd Charisse looked spectacular and had the moves, and no one noticed her.

Joe Smith म्हणाले...

@Althouse...

There were two women participating...

"The pornographic home video first featured him having sex with 16-year-old Jan Parsons, before he moved on to have sex with 22-year-old Tara Siebert."

Rob Lowe, living his best life : )

He said sometime later that it was the best thing that ever happened to him:

"“It’s one of the reasons why I got sober. I woke up one day and I was like, ‘What am I doing with my life?’ I’m 29 years in and like people talk, but it’s the best thing that ever happened to me. Honestly, I do because it got me sober, sober got me married. I’ve been married 29 years and I have two great sons. I don’t think any of that happens without going through that scandal,...”

Oddly, I knew Joe Rogan in 1986 and met Rob Lowe in 1987.

Bay Area Guy म्हणाले...

I know it may sound crazy but 37 years ago, the chicks in high school were all dreamy over Rob Lowe.

He turned out to be a kinda squared-away dude!

I read a few pages of Lowe's autobiography browsing through the bookstore a few years back and it opened with some bit about how he was always jealous of JFK Jr.'s good looks. Pretty funny and relatable (even if ghostwritten).

I do a lot of stand-up comedy and bombing is inevitable and essential as Rogan says. You learn that in spite of the awful pain, you're still standing there alive and it's a matter of "Well, what next?" Applies to cold approach pickup as well.

Snow White is sure over-appropriating white skin.

One big problem with this intro is that it's so Broadway, not Hollywood.

dbp म्हणाले...

As awful as the Academy Awards number was, it was horrible from start to finish and Rob Lowe was only in part of it. I doubt any normal people would think it was all his fault.

Kansas City म्हणाले...

Rob Lowe is funny, likeable and looks great for a guy about 55.

I did not remember the Oscar bomb. It did not seem too bad to me, but I am not musical. I was surprised to see the Oscar show was so bad that it ruined Allan Carr's reputation and effectively finished his career.

I met Carr in 1980 when he was promoting his flop Village People musical called Can't Stop the Music. I hate to speak ill of the dead, but he was a complete jerk. I wonder if the over the top criticism and career killing nature of his Oscar production was somehow related to animosity towards him within the industry.

By the way, Bruce Jenner was with Carr on the promotion tour. He seemed like a very nice guy, who was courteous, respectful and likeable, the opposite of Allan Carr.
