"Three heart patients died after a mob of lawyers rampaged through a Lahore hospital in a dispute with doctors."

"Up to 200 lawyers wearing traditional black suits stormed the Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC), smashing windows, doors and equipment and setting a police van ablaze. Television reports showed some of the lawyers armed with handguns while riot police fired tear gas to try to quell the mob. Lawyers could be seen standing on the bonnet of a burning police vehicle and scuffling with officers. Doctors and nurses fled the hospital to escape the violence, leaving intensive care patients unattended.... Lahore government official Kamran Ali told Reuters the lawyers were enraged by an earlier incident where doctors allegedly beat a lawyer at the hospital over his refusal to get in a queue of patients. The lawyers were particularly angry that the doctors filmed and shared the beating on social media, he said."

The Telegraph reports.

Lawyers and doctors fight it out, while people who have hearts suffer and die.

Sounds about right, but is it news?

This bad lawyer conduct might result in a private reprimand from the Pakistan Office of Lawyer Regulation. Sanction appealed, and then overturned of course.

Lawyers, defending a guy who acted unfairly, after he was beaten by doctors who took an oath to do no one harm.

We have an adversarial system. Ergo: for every bad lawyer there is a good lawyer. And they both want to win their case before the jury. That's what drives their future business.

The knee jerk hate for lawyers seems to come from those hired by Government and Monopoly businesses playing the rigged games. I hate those lawyers too.

Of course They omit the good part, namely a link to that video.

Daniel বলেছেন...

“The Pale” actually refers to a specific area surrounding the city of Dublin Ireland. I used to do IT work in many law offices in Ireland and while waiting for backups to run or databases to rebuild, I would read whatever books were to hand. Unsurprisingly, this often meant books on Irish law.

In Pakistan, as much of the world, manifestations like this can come across as a demonstration of power. Power=prestige. Power is shown by who one is allowed to beat without consequences.

Yes it is Bloods vs Crips, but in this case between professional guilds. I recall similar hostilities between Buddhist monasteries.

There is very little sense of "civility", or not quite in the way Americans think of it. The world is diverse. Pay attention to it, it offers ideas about what possibilities actually exist, which of your constraints are really unexamined taboos. What strategies and tactics are available with which to outmaneuver your opponents.

gspencer বলেছেন...

"a mob of lawyers"

Com'n, lets get accurate here. The operative fact isn't that they are lawyers.

It's that they're Muslims.

Violence, it's the Islamic way.

buwaya বলেছেন...

The doctors are also Muslims.
The lawyers in this case aren't Sharia lawyers, but secular ones, the guild that operates Pakistans more or less still British-style legal system.
The fighting between guilds is medieval in its methods.
More modern peoples do the same, but usually less physically.

This post by Althouse has no commentary by her. I find that fascinating. It is as if she is holding up an ink blot for us to identify. Will we focus on lawyers? Will we talk about Muslims? I like this response:

A mob of lawyers. An apt description of the impeachment hearings.

Maybe the law professor was looking for buwaya's comprehensive analysis?

So, how will the doctors' malpractice insurers resolve the liability issue with the legal malpractice carriers? Pistols at 20 paces? Or scimitars to the death?

Quaestor বলেছেন...

Daniel writes: “The Pale” actually refers to a specific area surrounding the city of Dublin Ireland.

It's much more than that. Pale is an archaic Middle English term which originally meant a territory or defensive area within a specific boundary or under a given jurisdiction. Where the borderline did not correspond to a natural feature such as a river or coastline it would be demarcated using an artificial structure such as an earthen rampart — Offa's Dyke, for example — or a line of wooden stakes, hence the term, pale being ultimately derived from the Latin pālus, a stake or prop. This sense of the term survives in the word palisade.

The meaning of pale as a boundary of jurisdiction or governance occurs more often than just the Irish example. There was the Pale of Calais, the region of Franch under direct English rule proclaimed by Edward III in 1360 which persisted until 1558 when the House of Valois finally wrested control of Calais from Mary Tudor. In Russian history, we have the Pale of Settlement (1791-1917), the demarcated limits of the Jewish presence within the tsarist empire. The term even appears in the history of the Holocaust. National Socialist propaganda sometimes euphemistically referred to the "Pale of Settlement" as the ultimate destination of deported Jews.

Today the term mostly occurs in the phrase beyond the pale as in outside bounds of morality, good behavior, or judgment in civilized company. The just-so story that informs us that beyond the pale acquired this meaning from its use in Ireland is just that, a just-so story. There is evidence the figurative sense of beyond the pale was in use in Chaucer's time.

The correct term for three or more lawyers acting in concert is riot, as in "a riot of lawyers attacked a cardiac hospital in Pakistan." Three or more lawyers acting in concert are seldom sufficiently organized to be classed as a mob.
