"Protesters broke into the heavily guarded compound of the United States Embassy in Baghdad on Tuesday and lit fires inside..."

"... to express their anger over American airstrikes that killed 24 members of an Iranian-backed militia over the weekend. Chanting 'Death to America!' thousands of protesters and militia members demonstrated outside the embassy compound, throwing rocks, shattering surveillance cameras, covering the walls with graffiti and demanding that the United States withdraw its forces from Iraq."

From "Iraq Protesters Break Into U.S. Embassy Compound in Baghdad/President Trump blamed Iran after demonstrators breached the compound’s outer wall and lit fires. Tensions are high after American airstrikes killed 24 members of an Iraqi militia backed by Iran" (NYT).

Its very straightforward.

If the rationale for the strikes is retaliation for the killing of a contractor then why weren't the response attacks targeted at appropriate local targets instead of escalating across a broad range of targets at higher strategic levels?

We already know the Neo-Con holdovers and establishment Pentagon/CIA types want a direct escalation with Iran leading to a broad new ME wide conflict instead of Trumps desire for asymmetrical responses which target Iran financially and make it harder for the mullahs to survive their economic crisis.

When Trump has the drunk halfway to the door, J. Farmer says, "So far Trump's intervention has not achieved much in terms of containing this drunk's disruptive behavior."

By all means let us all know what positive fruit it has returned or what it has actually accomplished.

@Michael K:

Hemingway rule, "How do you go bankrupt? Slowly, then suddenly." Remember the Battle of the Bulge ?

Iran will strike out until it can't.

Yeah yeah. Iran hawks have been predicting the imminent implosion of the Islamic Republic for decades now. Any day day now.

J Farmer,

Thank Jimmah Carta. Shah man bad, but he was a US ally and not an exporter of terrorism like Obozo’s mullah buddies

probably john Kerry was the one who counseled the abquaiq and this move, probes to determine the length of our commitment, we know what happened with Beirut and Mogadishu, the first was a direct proxy of Iranian forces, the second involved al queda elements like the late mohammed atef,

you wanna raise pressure? Raise heat. Shit is heating up. The status quo is changing. When mom and dad take to the streets things tend to change. HK and Iran are not getting back to the way they were before.

now to be fair, despite he led the cell that targeted the embassy in Kuwait in 1984, he was still considered for leadership under the cpa,

Spoken like a leader. So nice to have a man of courage in office.

Think outside the box. Spray protestors with LiquidAss. Or urine smelling yellow water. Humiliate them while sending a message that they are not to be taken seriously

Good. So now we can Ben Ghazi the f*$& out of them. Let the hearings begin.

In some situations I suppose you could demonstrate leadership by control of the mob coming with you so that you can be part of the negotiating etc.

Here's where the Republicans fall down. What aren't there consistent stories in the media about how Nancy Pelosi's Democrats in the House failed to authorize the funding for embassy security that Trump requested? Democrats would not have skipped this opportunity.

Those were mcguirks boys, the one who was (redacting) the journal reporter on the roof of the baghdad embassy, that was our islamic state coordinator

IOW, fake news yet again.

Moron Dems like Ritmo *are* trying to make this Trump's Benghazi. The fact that Trump sent help immediately, while Hillary left them to die, appears to be far too subtle a distinction for them to appreciate. Cause they're such masters of nuance.

Qwinn, LOL!!!!

Farmer: "Daddy are we there yet?"

Here's the thing, Michael. Time frames matter. Yes, civilizations collapses. States come and go. But there's a big difference between a regime that can hold on for five years and one that can hold on for 50 years. US policy towards Iran for the last 40 years has been that it's a weak regime teetering on the edge of collapse and that just a little outside pressure will hasten said collapse. And yet, Iran has proven far more resilient than many Iran hawks would like to confess.

And of course, if you'd like to put a little wager on when you actually think such a collapses will occur, I am all ears.

Rusty म्हणाले...

" And yet, Iran has proven far more resilient than many Iran hawks would like to confess."
Tyrants don't like to give up power. They put the screws to their people to keep them in line. Eventually the people get sick of it and either leave or revolt. like what's happening now in Iran and HK. You wanna know why it's never happened in Cuba? The people needed to make a modern society run all left Cuba in the 60s. It is collapsing now Farmer. What comes next will not look like it did a year ago. The result will be either more oppression or more freedom.

TJM म्हणाले...

This event will be known as the Anti-Benghazi. Hildabeast, Obozo, and the lying, evil, corrupt, national media hardest hit!!!!

KAG!!!!

TJM म्हणाले...

J.Farmer,

And your little wooden god, Obozo the Magnificent, infused this regime with cash to keep it going. Sounds like treason to me!

Narayanan म्हणाले...

J Farmer is more correct than Michael K.

There is such a thing as repeating action on same mistaken principle but claim win and loss based on D or R

For Rs Carter and Hillary seem like bookends to neocon wisdom in between.

In reality what is the difference?
