"They’re women who, in their teens, realized that they were actually men, socially transitioned to the other sex, and then underwent hormone therapy..."

"... to change their bodies, faces, and voices to become transgender men. After varying amounts of time, however, they all realized they had made a big mistake, stopped testosterone therapy, and 'detransitioned' back to being who they were before.... They expressed not a smidgen of transphobia, just a pressing concern that many teenage women, particularly lesbians, struggling with gender dysphoria, have been convinced too quickly that the only solution is to change their sex. They worry that any kind of therapy apart from affirmation of transgender identity is now seen as transphobic, and that teens are able to get hormones far too easily.... In 2009–2010, there were reportedly 32 girls and 40 boys referred to the center for treatment. Since 2018, there have been 624 boys and 1,740 girls, overwhelmingly in their teens. One explanation is that, as stigma declined, more transgender kids identified themselves as such. But the shift toward girls, compared with boys, suggests that something else may be going on. Why should the female share of transgender patients suddenly shift from 44 percent to 74 percent girls in a decade?... [H]ow can you tell which gender-dysphoric kid is gay and just needs to be left alone, and which one is trans and needs urgent treatment?... How much of the extraordinary surge in transgender girls is related to their discomfort with being a lesbian?... I know that gender dysphoria throughout childhood is one thing; sudden gender dysphoria among teenage girls is another."

From "The Hard Questions About Young People and Gender Transitions" by Andrew Sullivan (New York Magazine).

ADDED: Sullivan never says the word "homophobic" — though he anguishes over what is and isn't "transphobic" — but he really is talking about homophobia.

We can start by recognizing that there is no such thing as “urgent treatment” for gender dysphoria. They can live as the opposite sex all they want without medical intervention. It used to be standard of care (hopefully it still is) for transitioning people to live as the desired sex for a year before surgery. That seems like an eminently reasonable requirement.

Straight heterosexuals have watched the fully accepted gay men and gay women come under attack from the social constructionists denying their genetic existence and we thank God that we missed that experimental hot mess. We just settle for being men having sex with women and women having sex with men. That’s plenty exciting enough.

What is the Althouse rule about reporting difference in the sexes? That whatever happens, it will be reported as good for women?

I think we might have found the limit of that ability.

It's hard for Andrew to make the point that what's good for women is to turn themselves into men.

So much so that he's searching for the right -phobia word to describe it.

It's in the linked article: "These women live every day with the consequences of their decision: tenacious facial hair (one has to shave every three days) and body hair, deeper voices, permanently enlarged clitorises. They also suffer from the effects of “binding,” i.e. wearing a breast corset of sorts, to flatten their chests, so they can pass more easily as men. “I have back issues, lower lung capacity, and permanent dents around my shoulders,” one told me. “Every now and again, I have to push a rib back in to breathe,” another recounts."

Nothing 'hard' about the question. Teenagers should never, ever undergo hormone treatment due to 'gender dysphoria'. It's that simple. It's child abuse to even suggest it. If they want to fiddle around with their hormones when they are adults and find some idiot psychologist who wants to enable them, then let them. Before that, off limits.

BTW, I'm curious: Why so much interest in this transgender thing? Is one of your children transgender?

Why would we assume that someone with a mental disorder hurts themselves through a rational response to cultural expectations? If you are a woman who thinks that she is man, that is irrational. Giving in to that irrational belief by taking hormones and using prosthetics is not a rational response to culture expectations abut what a man looks like; it is an irrational response to believing you are a man when you are a woman.
In other words, it is not society's fault when people disfigure themselves to fit into their idea of what society demands from them.

People, especially the young, are remarkably subject to fashion and fads.

I witnessed this over decades in Woodstock, where wave after wave of young people indoctrinated in one or the other sexual fashion or fad twisted themselves into contortions, and wrecked their lives, to be sexually hip.

What’s happening, I suspect, is the same thing on a larger scale. Kids are indoctrinated ceaselessly in the media and schools that switching sexes is hip and fashionable. So, they try like hell to twist themselves into the latest hip sexual fashion.

The solution to this is to cease the propaganda and lies. Fat chance, huh?

Rapid Onset Gender Dysphoria, explained by a Brown researcher in a since disavowed paper, may have roots in webgroups with aspects of cis-hetero shaming, enabling false identifications, and providing emotional support for confused/questioning teens. Sounds like a sociogenic illness.

h म्हणाले...

I had not seen the figures showing that gender disphoria was so much more prevalent among (born) Girls than among (born) Boys. I have two possible explanations. One is that I believe that (born) GIrls and women are much more susceptible to social pressure, so are more likely to jump on the trans-is-cool bandwagon. The second is that girls' (especially teen girls') senses of self-worth are more tied up with their looks, (or lack of good looks). So a teen girl who is overweight and plain featured can logically imagine that she would look like a not handsome, but kind of normal, or not much worse than normal, teen-boy if she transitioned. A plain looking (born) boy who transitions to girl becomes a plain looking (or worse) girl. And while I realize it is ridiculous to argue from specific examples, you can do a websearch for Chastity Bono before and after and Chelsea manning before and after and get an Idea of what I talking about.

from the article...
We are regularly told that no child or teen is encouraged to take puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones unless they have shown “consistent, insistent and persistent” identification with the opposite sex. And yet all these women became trans quite suddenly after puberty, found affirmation immediately, and got testosterone easily. One says she told her mom one evening that she was having a sleepover with friends, but instead drove hundreds of miles to a Planned Parenthood through the night in search for help with transitioning. Within a couple of hours, after telling her life story, she says she was diagnosed as trans by a social worker, who was impressed by her tenacity in driving so far, and was started on testosterone therapy before even getting any results from blood work.

Remember when the professor said that gay marriage wouldn’t have negative outcomes, and would result in more freedom for everybody?

Jesus, that was bullshit, wasn’t it? Talk about your slippery slopes!

This bullshit can be traced back to 60s feminism. The fantasy world propaganda that American women were “oppressed” and “second class citizens” is where this mental illness began. Play acting by drama queen rich white women who wanted in on the fun of “being just like blacks under Jim Crow.”

Then we moved on to pretending that gays were “oppressed” and “second class citizens,” just “like blacks under Jim Crow!”

Marxist feminism is the root cause here. It was never about freedom. It’s always been about self-induced mental illness.

A few years ago in California, in a once famous case, a couple was murdered by being tied to an anchor and pushed off their boat into the 3000 ft deep Pacific. A truely horrible way to die. The guy who did it, did it for their money. He also killed another man for his money by cutting his throat about a year before this. The killer had zero remorse, and was convicted of the murders and sent to death row. He killed the couple for money to pay for surgery to transition to a woman, and when in prison was obsessed with it, so that he even attempted to cut off his own penis. He was rewarded for his murdering just as he intended, because California decided to give him his sex change in prison paid for by the taxpayers. The reasoning for this was that not giving it to him would be depriving him of his rights.

So let me get this straight. As punishment we take away most of his basic rights in prison, (he had a wife and 2 kids), but this uncommon and, until recently, non-existent right is more important than all the other things we deprive criminals of becuase they viciously murder innocent people. Where did this sudden new and supreme right come from? It wasn't even a thing a few years ago, and now it's a right of the highest order, and I mean the highest. He's on death row. We have decided he does not deserve life itself, but he deserves sex change surgery on our dime before we kill him? Our society has lost it's freaking mind.
