So Michael Bloomberg is in. On the one hand, it is perhaps good to see a plausible candidate step in for the Democrats. On the other hand, at age 77?

In 1952 the Republicans were quite worried that Eisenhower at age 62 seemed a bit old to be running for President. Hence the choice of the rather young at the time Richard Nixon for V-P.

In Canada the (red) poppy is worn for Remembrance Day. This is like your Veteran's Day, but more somber. Now a student has been suspended for refusing to wear a “rainbow poppy” instead.

If the details are accurate, and this is just an initial report so they might not be, I want all those involved fired. I really want to see criminal charges, but those probably won’t be available.

Cafe post? Oh boy.

From my campaigning days, I always spin up a wonderful scenario, what I think the candidate should do. I'm sure many others do the same, I wish Trump would do this....

I'd like to see a Trump campaign rally next year at the Tinley Park Amphitheatre. It's in the southwest suburbs of Chicago, next to many integrated and majority black suburbs, close to Chicago's South Side from where the black middle and working class fled.

Tinley P is in the 1st CD, represented currently by Bobby Rush. Back in the day, Harold Washington [PBUH] was the rep. Ideally, in attendance, there would be an attractive black Republican running against Rush and Candace Owens, who would both be called to the stage for a few words.

After the thing about how we are all Americans under god, at one point Trump talks about some of his accomplishments: lowest black unemployment, de-regulation that helps the small business sector, prison reform, defense of Christianity, etc.

Then he thunders about Chicago. 90 years of Democrat rule, 90 years of a corrupt one-party machine. He then talks about Chicago's problems. De-industrialization and taxes. 90 years. Worthless government schools run by a radical union out for itself. 90 years. Shootings, other crime, and the handcuffs on police. 90 years. Politicians on the take, setting nationwide records for corruption. 90 years. Big etc. Wake up brothers and sisters.

I'm sure Trump could handle it from there.

BTW, I'm noodling around with a poster series celebrating 90 years of D party rule in Chicago, 1931-2021. Suggestions are welcome. All hail the Party.

Michael Bloomberg will try to bring sanity to the Democratic party. Prediction: either Democratic party rejects sanity, or Bloomberg is co-opted by the socialists and joins the insanity. Odds of Bloomberg moving the party in his direction established at 0.027%

Wanted to throw a thank you to Michael K. This past Christmas, I took my wife and our new(ish) daughter to NY to be with my side of the family. While there, wifey and I took a side trip to Vermont to stay in a cabin by Lake Bomosseen. For dinner we drove across the state to enjoy dinner at Simon Pearce, a restaurant/glassmaker/ex-mill that Michael had mentioned awhile back. I'd never heard of it before, but his mention plus the good reviews I found made me curious. Pleased to report the food was excellent and the place itself was pretty interesting to see. Worth the trip, and was a fun drive through the mountains to get there.

Bloomberg is fooling himself into believing he can win the nomination. Jewish, white, male, and old are all the things that will be held against him as he campaigns for the nomination in the Democratic Party. I don't think he could win a single delegate outside of New York. He will largely draw the votes that would have gone to Joe Biden and, perhaps, Bernie Sanders. Elizabeth Warren probably wants Bloomberg in the race- she wouldn't have to pull her punches against a Wall Street multibillionaire.

If he is running because he doesn't want Warren to win the nomination, then he is badly miscalculating this plan.

I'd like to know where your geographic/demographic information is coming from. Depends on your scale, I guess, but, to my mind, Tinley Park is not "close to Chicago's South Side," which is where I grew up. My oldest sister moved with her family to Tinley Park from West Englewood (where we all grew up) in 1963 (she's now deceased, but her husband still lives there). My second oldest sister and her family moved to Orland Park (a bit further west) some time in the 70s. In both cases, their kids live partly there, partly elsewhere in the general area or even further out southwest. I won't say it's lily white, but I'm not aware of any "integrated [or] majority black suburbs" anywhere in that area. The black suburbs are much further east. My impression is that, rather, these areas are where a lot of the former white residents of the southwest side moved in the "white flight" starting in the 60s and 70s, though my parents got no farther than a trailer park near 79th and Archer (as for me, I've been in Boston, first in school then permanently, since 1971, but I have tons of relatives (including my parents' many, many descendants and spouses) in the Chicago area).

On a lot shakier grounds here, but I'm not sure that there was a comparable flight of "the black middle and working class." In addition to the general economic meltdown, the problem there is the overlay of the gang violence.

Not necessarily disagreeing with our underlying point, but the suggestion that this location would somehow make Trump's message devastating doesn't seem very compelling.
