Funeral for a long time family friend tomorrow. He was 90 and had an honest and well lived life. Military veteran, accomplished business man, active in his local community, gave time and money to local and national charities, adopted, provided for, and raised three beautiful kids, one of which pre-deceased him. His wife of 60+ years passed away just a few months ago. Tomorrow will be a celebration of a wonderful man, sad only in that we have to say goodbye. RIP RG.

I am mildly disappointed with my wife. A few weeks ago ,I went all out and bought a top of the line sponge mop.

Multiple times I have demonstrated the most efficient way to use this floor cleaning miracle. She just cannot get the hang of it. She thrives in high tech employment but is inept with some of the most simple household tasks.

The silver lining, if any, I guess, is that I can mop the kitchen in just shy of six minutes now, where it used to take me almost ten..

Kind of hesitant to buy that new vacuum cleaner she has been hinting about.

Hoover became the unimpeachable Hoover because of FDR's nurture and encouragement. Back then the FBI investigated the America First lobby, the German-American Bund, so it was all good. Hoover supplied FDR with salacious tidbits about his political opponents and allies, and that was even better. Hoover was quite squashable early in his career, but FDR was the one who gave him his stature. They had a good relationship. It's probably just as well when the President and FBI Director have an adversarial relationship.

I'm working my way through the lesser known Shakespeare plays. The BBC produced a series of the complete Shakespeare back in 1984. The plays are well acted and have decent production values. Still, there's a reason why they're performed so seldom. Every so often you'll hit a stretch of great poetry, but there are lots of WTF moments. In Two Gentlemen of Verona, one of the gentleman attempts to ravish the other gentleman's beloved. He gets beaten off. Then he makes a sincere and repentant apology, not to the woman, but to her fiance. This gentleman is moved by his repentance and, in a generous spirit, tells his friend to go on and take the woman. The friend demurs and the two gentleman shake hands and become even better friends because of this misunderstanding. The woman involved faints. The criticism I read states that this play demonstrates how important male friendship was in Elizabethan time. Okay, but WTF.....I read here that knowledge of Shakespeare doesn't make you a better person. They got that right

narciso ayon kay ...

Well shakespeare was popular entertainment of the era, i guess more mamet then sondheim, except neither focused on historical events maybe lloyd weber without the music.

Shakespeare is all about entertainment, not edification. But his remarkable use of language makes his works classic. When we studied Shakespeare in HS, it was for the richness of his poetic voice. Most of his plots--the tragedies, at any rate--are based on history so not original but the way he tells the stories is without equal.

That's the $64 question. The issue with it's attendant drama -- and humor -- is positively Shakespearean, no? We know how prince Hal dealt with it and the Bard is ambivalent about the outcome, and the man. How we deal with will decide the date of the Republic.

Henry VIII is Shakespeare's least performed play. I saw the 1984 BBC production just recently. Shakespeare knew how to stay on the right side of Tudor politics. In the play, Henry suffers torments of conscience because he married his dead brother's widow. He thinks of it as incest, and it really bothers him. He's holier than the Church in this regard.....Anne Boleyn appears in the play. Everybody comments on how beautiful she is, but she isn't really given very many lines. Wise decision. She was killed by Henry and was the mother of Elizabeth. Very tricky person to dramatize. One wrong metaphor and you're drawn and quartered......Shakespeare's great insight into the nature of kings and politics had a practical side.

I just saw Henry VIII too - a live performance at Stratford, Ontario. I wasn't expecting much since it was the Bard's last play and was co written with another author. The Woolsey and Katherine of Aragon scenes were really moving. I was surprised given the politics of the day. But then I was reminded that the play was written after Elizabeth's death during the reign of James I. James I was no fan of Elizabeth who had his mother, Mary Queen of Scots, beheaded.

After Althouse a couple of months ago strongly requested (on threat of deletions!) that people post HTML links (real, followable links), we see in a thread from yesterday with 91 comments so far including dozens and dozens of “links” that folks have posted, not a single one is presented as followable HTML.

I see that even commenters who included HTML (bold-face, say) in their post(s) — including many YouTube URL's whose text doesn't even give a clue as to their subjects — didn't bother turning the text URL into an HTML link. The fact is that unless there's some description which tempts and motivates me by indicating it's extremely worthwhile into going through the rigamarole (on a smart phone) of following a pure-text link, I ain't-a-gonna do it! Particularly if all the poster says about the matter (as seen above) is something like: “oops! this”. Sheesh!

If you, an Althouse commenter, want her commentariat to read your posts and follow your links (why post, otherwise?), make them links! Otherwise, as Althouse herself noted, her readers en masse just aren't going to follow them.

Doesn't work on a great many machines/browsers, including iPhones/Safari.

Michael McNeil ayon kay ...

Besides, even just the part of simply highlighting an arbitrary string of characters on (e.g.) an iPhone is something of a pain.

Michael McNeil ayon kay ...

Here's the crib sheet I put together for narciso and others here, for them to “learn to code.”

One might note that even (dim!) Inga was able to enter such followable HTML links into her posted comments. I wouldn't just give up after only a single try or two, much less zero! Try it, please.

(I'll be glad to assist anyone getting beyond their blockage — if there's a technical aspect to it in their case at least. I so offered a while back, and now others who previously had trouble here making followable links work can now do them.)

But if you're having difficulty getting them to work (it's extremely easy to enter such links, but you've got to know which few special characters to put where), simply practice a few times — on, say, an Althouse post, e.g. a cafe post — and afterward delete your mistakes. Then you'll have it!

Here's how it works (note: omit the line endings shown for clarity between code sections; also: capitals vs. lower-case make no difference). I'm creating a link to Althouse's blog as an example. Everything shown except text in italics will appear as before, after, or part of the link:

text preceding link
<a href="https://althouse.blogspot.com/">
link description, e.g.: Althouse
</a>
text following link

Which thereupon comes out in one's posting looking like this (note that the link works!):

text preceding link Althouse text following link
