"Trump Names Robert O’Brien, Hostage Mediator, as National Security Adviser."

The NYT reports.
Mr. Trump announced the selection [of the State Department’s chief hostage negotiator] shortly after saying he would also “substantially increase Sanctions” on Iran following weekend attacks on oil facilities in Saudi Arabia that officials in Washington and the region have blamed on the Tehran government.

[O'Brien,] a longtime lawyer... impressed [Trump] with his work to extricate Americans detained by countries like North Korea and Turkey....

A competent man in DC? That should make a tourist attraction. And he can also negotiate like a Trumpian.

That or work in the press office.

Apparently he wants a deal-maker rather than an ideologue. Good or bad, depending on the deals.

He has already been confirmed. Would he have to go through confirmation again?

Flynn has some unfinished business to complete. Like putting McCabe in prison.

Then he will have time to do the NSC

I'm not making a value judgment; only contrasting Trump's style with previous administrations both Democrat and Republican. Trump's foreign policy has far more in common with Obama's than any other American president since World War 2: Avoid the use of force and try to cut deals wherever you can. It suits the current mood of the electorate both Left and Right.

Did Obama avoid the use of force? He certainly expanded the use of drones to bomb areas in the middle east. That seems pretty forceful, to me. That aside, I applaud any president/administration that avoids the use of force unless absolutely necessary.... I can't recall the last administration we that held to that criterion, ("absolutely necessary,") but, to the extent Trump avoids initiating new military actions, it is good. (He needs to stop the military involvements we're already too-long-mired in, and remove all troops from all foreign stations.)

Drago म्हणाले...

Earnest: "Trump's foreign policy has far more in common with Obama's than any other American president since World War 2:"

Laughably laughable.

Yeah, obamas deal cutting is similar to Trumps!! After all, they both use the word "deals"!! It doesnt get any more similar than that I guess!

I mean, the Iran Deal and USMCA! Both are totally "deals"!

Talk about reductio ad "stupidum"....

Earnest Prole म्हणाले...

Yeah, obamas deal cutting is similar to Trumps!! After all, they both use the word "deals"!! It doesnt get any more similar than that I guess!

To compare Trump's dealmaking with Obama's, we would first need an actual Trump deal. China, North Korea, Iran, Middle East -- any one of them will do.

narciso म्हणाले...

remember the lickspittle from heileman and Halperin 'I like killing people' then we saw there were no drone strikes in north Africa, or anywhere along the Euphrates, where Islamic state was rising, of course, Libya led to consequences all the way down to niger, the iran deal was the jizdah or was it the hudna, you can sell ben Rhodes on any such foolishness,

Drago म्हणाले...

Earnest: "To compare Trump's dealmaking with Obama's, we would first need an actual Trump deal. China, North Korea, Iran, Middle East -- any one of them will do."

Thus disproving your point as obambi was happy to give away the store to get a deal and Trump isnt.

But let me guess: OMG Trumps unwillingness to make deals like obambi did just PROVES how similar they are!!

narciso म्हणाले...

Nothing like the Korean framework, which was the skeleton for the iran deal, the blind deal with the supposedly 'light in the loafer' castro brother, his son was the middleman with brennan,

narciso म्हणाले...

of course, mattis looked askance at the throwing Mubarak under the bus, in favor of morsi, luckily we had general asisi standing in the wings so it didn't end like iran redux, most everything the qataris asked for, Obama did, including delaying the certification of boko haram as the scourge of Nigeria, there was a clash with iran, on Syria, so it was 50/50 split,

Now Trump follows Reagan's policy in some respects, besides the confrontations over the Gulf of Sidra, the bombing of Tripoli (which was reactive) the intervention in Grenada, (along similar lines) yes there were proxies in central America, in the middle east, and even in southern Africa,

Earnest Prole म्हणाले...

If you want to be known as the dealmaker president it helps to make at least one deal -- we can't call you Picasso if you refuse to paint.

Birkel म्हणाले...

One deal?

You mean the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement?
Or the US-Mexico agreement to stop alien caravans?
Or the US-Mexico agreement for Mexico to take returned illegals?
Or the US-Japan trade agreement?
Or the US-South Korea trade agreement?
Or breaking the deal with Turkey to sell F35s?
Or the deal to sell arms to Taiwan? Or Poland?

Just quit pretending, Earnest Progressive.
