"The Democrat Congresswomen have been spewing some of the most vile, hateful, and disgusting things ever said by a politician in the House or Senate, & yet they get a free pass..."

"... and a big embrace from the Democrat Party. Horrible anti-Israel, anti-USA, pro-terrorist & public..... .... .....shouting of the F...word, among many other terrible things, and the petrified Dems run for the hills. Why isn’t the House voting to rebuke the filthy and hate laced things they have said? Because they are the Radical Left, and the Democrats are afraid to take them on. Sad!"

Tweeted Trump, just now.

1. He's a master of Tweet-talk — he's tweet-talking us — but he makes language mistakes that I would edit out. He writes, "the petrified Dems run for the hills," but if you are petrified — the dead metaphor is turned to stone — you can't move, so you can't run. (The OED gives this example from Jack London's "White Fang": "The cub was in a frenzy of terror, yet he lay without movement or sound, frozen, petrified into immobility, to all appearances dead.")

2. But "petrified" is a slightly unusual word, so it works as a stimulant.

3. The implicit subject is that Nancy Pelosi is going forward with a vote to condemn Trump for his "Why don't they go back..." tweets (which we discussed here yesterday). Trump is certainly not backing down. He doesn't do that, and how could that possibly work? If he ever withdrew a remark and apologized, his antagonists would react by demanding another concession. So he plunges forward, in attack mode: "Why isn’t the House voting to rebuke the filthy and hate laced things they have said?" You don't like what I said, look at what you said. And on and on.

4. A return of the iconic "Sad!"

5. The key line is: "Because they are the Radical Left, and the Democrats are afraid to take them on." He's tying all the Democrats to a small, vocal group that the Democrats don't want as their brand. He's taunting them: You can't even distance yourself from this small group, within your own party, for your own sake. Implied: How can you be trusted to defend America?

6. Look at the arc of emotion in Trump's brief statement: It begins with hate (the "spewing" of "vile, hateful, and disgusting things") and proceeds to love ("a big embrace") and then to anger ("shouting of the F...word") and then to fear ("petrified Dems... afraid to take them on"), and finally sadness ("Sad!"). The hate and anger are projected outward from the small subgroup of Democrats. The love and fear are experienced within the fragile body of mainstream Democrats. And the sadness is Trump's idea of the appropriate reaction from anyone watching.

7. Look at the narrative of action: the small subgroup of Democrats spews. The more sensible Democrats have one strong action — the big hug — and the rest is weakness — frozen into immobility or running. Yes, there's that implied activity, voting to condemn Trump, but he doesn't mention it. His defense is to go on the offense. Yet he assumes the position of standing back and observing and finding it sad.

Polling by House Dems says the reverse: : new polling has Democrats terrified Trump has now branded AOC & Squad as the face of the Democrat party.

Top Democrats are circulating a poll showing that one of the House's most progressive members — Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez — has become a definitional face for the party with a crucial group of swing voters.

"If all voters hear about is AOC, it could put the House majority at risk," said a top Democrat who is involved in 2020 congressional races. "She's getting all the news and defining everyone else’s races."

Ocasio-Cortez was recognized by 74% of voters in the poll; 22% had a favorable view.

Rep. Ilhan Omar was recognized by 53% of the voters; 9% (not a typo) had a favorable view.

The other aspect of this attack by Trump, intentional or not, is that it spurs his GOP critics into further discrediting themselves. David French responded to Trump by, and I'm not exaggerated, praising immigrants as SUPERIOR to native born Americans.

If you don't quite grasp how awful that is, imagine a parent openly saying someone else's kid was better than their own. Imagine a parent publicly stating "I wish little Johnny down the block was my son instead of my own worthless spawn."

And of course, French stupidly fails to consider how future generations of Ilhan Omars will stand in judgment of him and his children.

The tension thick, soon one of these women gives a canned speech, one of their lackey aides takes a few questions, and all of it amounts to ‘fuck you, oppressor, you had it coming and we might raise them next year too. You feel lucky if you can leave without getting whacked in the head.

Those are the ideas we’re dealing with, and the people committed to them. That is where much 60’s radicalism and radical chic logically leads, becoming the populist base of one of our two parties which wants to destroy all that matters. You can support Trump calling it out, while also recognizing he exacerbates such movements further as a man of such questionable character, bombast and self regard. You can highlight the liberal and hippie failures of design and thinking and the Republican party’s cowardice and so many failure of leadership.

Here's the problem each of us needs to address: are we going to read Trump's missives carefully and suss out what he does and doesn't say (thanks, Althouse), or are we going to worry about what other people--critical, negative people who hate Trump--say he said?

My wife (PBOH) is readily willing to argue that Trump gives his critics ammo, and so he is a fool. Look what they say about him, she says.

But if you look at his tweets, as Althouse does, you see that initially he suggested some unnamed progressive Democrat congresswomen go back the their "country" of origin (Somalia? Detroit? The Bronx? Boston and Back Bay? Puerto Rico? Chicago? Palestine? Minneapolis?), contribute to the restoration of those places, and then come back and show us how it's done.

Now, you can say a lot about that Tweet stream, but he never mentioned anyone's name or race, and he didn't order them to leave, he suggested that they go and do good work, and then come back and bless the rest of us with their knowledge. It was like Jesus and the disciples.

I look at the newspapers on my desk today, and I see so much nonsense.

Sad.

It’s down to 16 months now. Not that much over a year. And Trump needs three things to be happy:
1) re-election as President
2) hold the Senate
3) retake the House

I think, in the end, that #2 may be the hardest. But the more that this happens here, the easier I think the other two are. How would any of this help the Dems flip any of the Blue Wall states they lost in 2016? And I think that they may lose MN too, since too many Dems know that the Somalis there really haven’t assimilated that well.

But I think that it may be in the House that this has the biggest effect. The Dems retook the House last year with essentially four different things. Fairly obviously, they cheated their asses off. They picked up those 5 OC CA seats, as well as the one Senate seat in AZ. We saw it elsewhere too. But this time around the Republicans are forewarned, and hopefully forearmed. Second, there was Trump Russian Collusion/Obstruction 24/7 on the MSM. That is effectively over, and last week Rep Nunes, Ranking Member on the HSCI, told AG Barr flatly that if he doesn’t start handing out some decent prison time, no Republican is going to trust either the FBI or the DoJ for at least a generation. As a member of the Gang of Eight, Nunes probably knows more now about what happened in Spygate than almost anyone, and I expect Barr to head his advice. The third thing that the Dems did is that they recruited a lot of moderate candidates to run against Republican incumbents. Except that they aren’t being given a chance to show any daylight between themselves and the Cra Cra Squad. Pelosi is forcing her caucus to close ranks around her crazies here, and Rep Green is apparently forcing a vote against Trump. People say that the Republicans probably retake the House if Trump can nationalize the house races. How can it not be nationalized if these freshmen Congressmen are forced to vote against Trump and for the Squad? And finally, the money. In a lot of races in 2018, the Dems’ funding edge was significant. As in 2016, the national campaign is going to vacuum up most of that excess cash that was going to House and Senate races in 2016. And ratcheting up the pressure, Trump has already started his re-election campaign, and the money is already streaming in. Making things esp interesting, probably the biggest individual campaign finder in 2018, Tom Steyer, is running for President.

In a perfect world, the MSM would have exposed the hypocrisy of the Dem House committee chairs lockstep going after Trump every way they could, after so many Dems running in 2018 saying that that was the last thing that they would do. They lied, of course, and the MSM is hiding that they lied. But this is the fight that none of them want, but all will be forced into it, to support their side. And, as with Obamacare in 2010, many of the the moderates are being forced by Pelosi and her leadership team to sacrifice their careers for solidarity.

The new look of the Dems in the House: Omar Holding Secret Fundraisers With Islamic Groups Tied to Terror

Democratic freshman Rep. Ilhan Omar (D., Minn.) has been holding a series of secret fundraisers with groups that have been tied to the support of terrorism, appearances that have been closed to the press and hidden from public view.

The content of these speeches, given to predominately Muslim audiences, remains unknown, prompting some of Omar's critics to express concern about the type of rhetoric she is using before these paying audiences, particularly in light of the lawmaker's repeated use of anti-Semitic tropes in public.

Omar recently spoke in Florida at a private event hosted by Islamic Relief, a charity organization long said to have deep ties to groups that advocate terrorism against Israel. Over the weekend, she will appear at another private event in California that is hosted by CAIR-CA PAC, a political action committee affiliated with the Council on American Islamic Relations, or CAIR a group that was named as an unindicted co-conspirator in a massive terror-funding incident.

Omar's appearance at these closed-door forums is raising eyebrows in the pro-Israel world due to her repeated and unapologetic public use of anti-Semitic stereotypes accusing Jewish people of controlling foreign policy and politics. With Omar's popularity skyrocketing on the anti-Israel left, it appears her rhetoric is translating into fundraising prowess...

Islamic Relief has come under congressional investigation for what lawmakers have described as its efforts to provide assistance to terrorist group such as Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood. The charity has been banned by some countries as a result of these ties.

Oregon went to vote by mail in 1996. In the 24 years since then two (2) non-Democrats have won state-wide elections, both for the office of Commissioner of the state agency Bureau of Labor & Industries. When it comes to all other state-wide electoral races, i.e., Governor, US Senate races, etc., those are now the exclusive domain of the Democrats. Before 1996 Republicans sometimes won those seats, but after 1996, never again.

Agreed. The strategy is to force Dems to defend African American women and talk about race.

His messaging is: African American legislators should "Go Back To Africa." Intentionally provocative and offensive with the intention to get the narrative around his statement. He wants media and legislators to talk about racism.

Trump will do this over and over again leading up to 2020. He will say incendiary statements. He will be intentionally extreme with the intention of forcing D legislators and the media to address his statements. He needs to get more and more edge to get the attention of people, because legislators, media, and people in general had started to ignore his odd, inflammatory tweets with a "Trump says crazy incendiary things" shrug and attitude.

Expect to see more of this from him leading up to 2020: "African American legislators should Go Back To Africa" "African American men are rapists and criminals." "Mexicans are rapists and criminals." Expect it to get more extreme in the lead up to Nov. 2020.

It's his playbook. It'll be ugly. It'll get a lot worse before Nov 2020.

@Michael K Agree. Trump is going to have the Dems playing defense for the next how many months. Not hard to do when you have 25 whackos trying to out bid each other in craziness and Nancy Pelosi (perhaps America's most disliked politician) is portrayed as the only sane one.

The effect of Trump's tweets has been to move the conservative bloggers' discussion of "the squad" as anti-semites, anti-American, and potential jihadists to the front pages of the MSM. As many have pointed out there was nothing race related in Trump's tweets. That all has been injected by the Dems and MSM. Since the "race" card is the go to accusation for these people how boring is that going to get over the next year. The boy who cried wolf syndrome.

pacwest said...

As much as I cringe at some of Trump's messaging I think he did the right thing on this one. Don't let the Dems separate themselves from the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. That's the messaging. "Go Back to Africa." Pressley is an African American women, with deep American roots, with American slave ancestors. If his tweet was only targeted to Omar's messaging, the public would have ignored the tweet. The "Go Back To Africa" messaging focused not just on Omar but on Pressley (African American slave ancestors) forced attention to the tweet. A less incendiary tweet would have been ignored.

It's a "Go Back to Africa" statement, which is intentional. It needed to be that outrageous to get the attention of the media and drive the narrative. Omar is very unpopular. He needed to include Pressley in his messaging of "Go Back To Africa." It needed to be that edge to get Ds to defend this group. The Ds were furious with this group and ready to push them overboard.

The "Go Back to Africa" messaging is why the media and people reacted as they did. It was targeted to plural legislators, the "squad" which included 3 American born women and two African American women, including one born of American slaves.

His messaging will get more edge as the election approaches. It works for Trump because it forces the convo to be about race. He'll say stuff that cannot be ignored. Because people had gotten in the habit of ignoring outrageous tweets. So they need to get more outrageous to get attention and drive the narrative.

Pelosi would not defend an attack on Omar's rhetoric or policy. She opposes Omar. She opposes the "Squad." A tweet about the Squad's policies would have failed.

He needed to make it edge to drive the narrative. Pelosi will defend an attack telling Ayanna Pressley (African American with deep American roots). So he made the messaging: "Go Back to Africa."

Pressley's slave ancestors were here for generations. Of course it doesn't make sense. AOC: Puerto Rico is not a country, of course it doesn't make sense. Puerto Rico is part of the USA. Of course it doesn't make sense. The GOAL of the tweet wasn't to make sense. It was to say something incendiary and edge enough that would FORCE Pelosi to defend her legislators.

These legislators are the enemy of Pelosi, she disagrees with them and wanted to marginalize them. So Trump says something so outrageous she was forced to defend it. She couldn't ignore Trump telling Ayanna Pressley to "Go back to Africa."

MY POV: My point is not to argue is this racist or not. My point is: This is his messaging. It's written to drive the narrative. It needed to be edge to drive the narrative. If it was less "edge" it would not capture the attention of the media. It was written, with the intention, of being so edge it would force Pelosi to defend the "Squad." If he had written a tweet that was a critique of Omar's messaging or rhetoric, Pelosi would not have defended it.

I don't know why you think Pelosi would defend a tweet that was just about Omar's messaging. He needed to make it about Pressley and American born citizens to get the result he wanted from Pelosi and the press.

We'll see a lot more of this leading up to Nov. 2020. The strategy is to get Ds to talk about racism. The more Ds talk about racism, the less they can talk about economics or health care. This will not be a policy election. It's going to be about inflammatory tweets.

The FBI, the DOJ and the Mueller special counsel have each purposefully claimed specific Russian actors were responsible for hacking the DNC in 2016. If it turns out those claims were based on falsehood, the integrity of the DOJ and Special Counsel collapses.

Mr. Butowsky is making a very serious allegation in this court filing.

To the best of my knowledge, Trump never mentioned Ayanna Pressley by name. I strongly suspect he doesn't know her name. He knows there are four radical lefty women in Congress who keep saying anti-American things and that one of them is from Somalia. I think that's the one he wants to go back to her country (to attempt to fix, because it's a mess.)

Africa, as we all know, is not a country. Pressley may or may not know what country her ancestors came from (whatever country it is now, it wasn't when they were captured and shipped across the Atlantic).

Incidentally, all of our ancestors came from Africa as far current genetic science indicates.

Was Trump deliberately trying to make a racist statement? Maybe, but I doubt it. Are the screeching morons of the Left determined to hear racism in everything he says? Yes, they are.

The Squad is Pelosi's enemy. She's deeply frustrated with them and wants to throw them overboard. The edge tweet is what forced her to defend them.

& Of course that's deliberate. Trump will attempt to make the election about the Squad and AOC and Omar. Trump wants Pelosi to defend the Squad. He needed to write a tweet that would force Pelosi to defend in public.

The tweet needed to say Country and needed to include not just AOC and Omar but Pressley too. It's the combo that forced the defense from Pelosi and the media reaction. The edge part of the tweet is what drives the narrative. It's the "Country" part that drives the narrative. If he had written "Go back to Cincinnati or Detroit" the tweet would have been ignored.

The edge aspect of the tweet is not a bug, it's a feature. Look to see more of this for the Nov 2020 election. It's the strategy.

Ayanna Pressley understands the game. She gets it's a "Back to Africa" trope that is dislocating to Ds who want to talk about other things like healthcare and economics. That's why she said "Don't take the bait." But, meanwhile, the other three are eating up the bait so fast....

"To make room for our civilization, we killed a lot of their civilization, and put the rest into reservations."

True, but let's not act like they were super nice to one another.

Robert Cook: " To make room for our civilization, we killed a lot of their civilization, and put the rest into reservations."

Has Elizabeth Warren ever apologized for her family directly participating in that activity before she appropriated Native American-ness to advance her own white bread privilege?

These have been the ultimate Rorschach Tweets, everybody sees in them what they want. Is it okay to just despise all of them?

I wonder if Pressley sometimes thinks "You three go ahead ... "

4dub: This is my final comment so the thread will not be dislocated.

Why? I think your take here on the latest tweet brawl is worthwhile, and apropos of the original topic.

Seeing Red: "Wwww did Trump say countries or places?"

You won't get an answer.

Once wwww was called out on her previous and current lies and fake quotes and hoax accusations she scurried off as you knew she would.

What else could she do?

""He told an African American woman born of slave ancestors to 'Go back to her Country.'"

I think the point was specifically about Omar but he extended the penumbra of anti-US/Israel hatred to the other 3.

"Assange said that Seth Rich and his brother gave Assange the DNC information, not the Russians."

If,IF, true the ramifications are colossal. I'm not sure the MSM could bury a story like that, though I'm sure they would give it the old college try.

Cook: “Well, it wasn't a wilderness everywhere, and there was civilization here before the Europeans. To make room for our civilization, we killed a lot of their civilization, and put the rest into reservations.”

Right! So, a) “civilization” doesn’t mean what you think it means and b) the people “here before the Europeans” were killing each other without anybody’s help.

So what’s your point?

Michael K said...

and there was civilization here before the Europeans.

I guess you define "civilization" as ripping the berating herts out of prisoners and eating them.

Before the European civilization you so deplore there was the invasion of the Indo-Europeans who killed all the men and raped all the women so that all European Y chromosomes are Indo-European whilst DNAmt is hunter gatherer. Sort of like the Mestizos in Mexico.

“The Democrats’ Blue Dog Coalition, the moderates, has 27 members, almost seven times as many Congresspeople as the Squad. But which side does the party support?”

Don’t worry. Most of them will be back in civilization an life in a year and a half.

This info is in a legal filing in court, not a rumor. That's why I think it will be fun watching them try to hide it.

I suspect Assange's sense of self preservation has led him so far to deny it in public.

Was Trump trying to make a racist statement?

No, he was trying to get all the Democrats and the MSM (BIRM) to jump into the same boat. They did. Now they are stuck with each other. They could start rowing in unison, but some of the sailors are going to have to shut up and keep rowing. What are the odds? Well, yesterday the some of the most junior sailors gave a press conference, where they engaged in an epic amount of sea-lawyering.

The shore is distant.

Trump is going after 20% of the African-American vote and 40% of the hispanic vote. If the Dems aren't in a panic about it, they should be. But they are.

"Is it okay to just despise all of them?"

And just go back to watching CNN so you can get the true story? I don't despise the tweets, I despise the fact that they are necessary.

“That's the messaging. "Go Back to Africa." Pressley is an African American women, with deep American roots, with American slave ancestors.”

And Ilhan Omar is an African American woman with negligible American roots, and slave owner and save selling ancestors much closer to her than Pressley’s slave ancestors. Probably Omar’s ancestors didn’t sell Pressley’s, sincecmy understanding is that most slaves headed for the US (or what ultimately become the US) came from the west coast of Africa, while Omar’s Somali ancestors were selling black slaves mostly into the Islamic world. And probably did so well into the 20th Century.

“Assange said that Seth Rich and his brother gave Assange the DNC information, not the Russians.”

As Dr K pointed out, this is going to be fun.
