"I asked the traffic officer, why people taking pictures and he said, ‘You don’t watch TV? That’s a famous guy.'"

Famous guy... and a $2-million car.

It's not clear to me which driver is to blame for this fender-bender, but judge for yourself whether the lady had reason to be scared:

What is the point of driving a Bugatti in NYC?

Ignorance is Bliss म्हणाले...

Judging by google maps, they were west-bound on 42nd, and she was turning right into 10th. There were three lanes west-bound on 42nd, she was in the middle, and he was in the right. 10th is all one way, 6 lanes, though the lanes nearest the curb look to be used for parking.

The man hole cover visible in the video is well into the first lane of 10th, so Morgan's car is well into the second lane without starting to turn.

What I can't tell: was the right lane right-turn-only? If so, Morgan was clearly at fault. Did the middle lane allow right turns? If not, the woman was clearly at fault.

Caligula म्हणाले...

"Is it stupider to buy a $2M non-museum car or to then drive that car in New York frickin' City?"

Well, there's that: at some level, a car is just a car. Especially when driving in dense Manhattan traffic, there's very little you can do with a $2 million car that you couldn't do with any car (or at least any car that's in drivable condition).

Which is to say, the owner would surely have been disappointed anyway once he realized how little happiness a $2 million car actually buys.

BUT, having owned it for only an hour, he probably didn't have it long enough to realize that.

AND, whatever flows from their suddenly public behaviors, I'd predict both are going to see very substantial increases in their car insurance rates.

(If you really want to enjoy driving in Manhattan traffic, the best way to do so is to drive a really nasty looking beater car aggressively and just a little bit erratically. And then enjoy how much space other drivers- and bicyclists too!- offer you.)

Yancey Ward म्हणाले...

Difficult from Google to determine whether or not Morgan was in an actual lane, but if he was, it was certainly a turn only lane. Here you have a view of 42nd street about half a block from the intersection with 10th Av. You can clearly see that the far right, the lane Morgan was in, is not a travel lane in the middle of the block, and the same applies to the block of 42nd after the intersection. It is possible that the end of the block is a turn only from the curb, but I doubt it.

Ignorance is Bliss म्हणाले...

Ice Nine said...

Check out google maps, satellite view. If he was turning into the second lane from the curb (reasonable, the lane closest to the curb is used for parking) then his path would have him crossing the outer corner of the light-colored pavement around the manhole cover, probably around a 30 degree angle. He is parst that without starting his turn.

TRACY MORGAN BUGATTI CRASH NOT HIS FAULT ...
NYPD Saw it Go Down

"Only 2 things can make Tracy Morgan feel better about wrecking his $2 million Bugatti ... insurance and this -- the accident wasn't his fault ... TMZ has learned.

Just Tracy's luck ... an NYPD traffic agent happened to be on the corner of 42nd Street and 10th Avenue Tuesday afternoon when the costly fender bender went down. Law enforcement sources tell us the traffic agent witnessed Tracy cruising westbound on 42nd Street and preparing to make a legal turn onto 10th Ave. when the Honda collided with him.

We're told, to the traffic agent's eyes ... the Honda did NOT have the right of way."

"...Most of the damage to the Bugatti's carbon body was on the front left quarter panel. Doesn't look like a ton of damage, but when the whip costs $2 mil ... it's all relative."

https://www.tmz.com/2019/06/05/tracy-morgan-bugatti-crash-not-at-fault-nypd/

Assuming this is not fake news, the woman was obviously trying to make a right turn from one of the middle lanes on 42nd Street westbound to get on 10th Avenue (which is only northbound).

Since Tracy was apparently in the process of doing the same from the curb lane, she apparently felt as a woman driver it was entirely within her rights as to cut him off.

Except that women drivers are reportedly more careful and get into less car accidents than men.

To resolve this discrepancy, she must be either a stupid or crazy woman driver or both.

Or possibly, an entitled Jersey City woman driver who was high on pot.

Just a theory.

My own theory, given that he had purchased the car less than a half hour before, is that he was unused to driving a car with 1500 hp and 1180 lb-ft of torque. He pressed the gas petal and the car leapt forward quicker and farther than he expected. Part of this theory is that he felt entitled to put the blame on the woman because “Do you know who I am?!?!?”

Howard म्हणाले...

BM yeah, very likely right. Also, the Veyron is a very heavy car compared with Ferrari/Lamborghini/Porsche, so takes more pedal to get out of the hole.

StephenFearby म्हणाले...

"Again, she is turning, and he is going straight ahead. He was probably trying to pass on the right, and that's why is car is going straight, and not making any attempt to turn right."

If you're changing lanes on a highway or ANYWHERE, you have to check your rear and side-view mirrors to make sure you're not going to cause an accident.

42nd Street isn't a highway. It's a major, two-way, multi-lane cross-town street in midtown Manhattan. Traffic can be held up in any lane if there's a vehicle trying to make either a left or right hand turn. That lane backs up and drivers try get out of the blocked lane to the one that's flowing. So what applies on the highway doesn't necessarily apply here.

Sometimes it's a matter of playing chicken for both pedestrians and cars.

Many years ago, when I was commuting to a research job at the NY Daily News, I was patiently waiting with other commuters from the Port Authority Bus Terminal for the 8th Avenue & 41st traffic light to turn green...so we could cross 8th Avenue.

The light turned green. I stepped out into the crosswalk, only to be knocked down by cab driver who decided that red lights didn't apply to him. I got up and approached on the sidewalk, looking at least for some signs of an apology. Non was forthcoming. Instead, the driver looked straight ahead, studiously ignoring me.

But his driver's side window was open. So furious me gave him a Korean Karate shot to the side of his head with the heel of my hand. He got out of the other side of the cab, opened the trunk and took out a baseball bat. As we were squared off, a cop happened to turn up, heard the story and ordered both of us to get on our ways.

It's probably not very smart for a pedestrian to play chicken with a car. But I was young and foolish and almost 6'4" tall and wanted to get to work on time.

I wouldn't be surprised if Morgan approached the intersection faster than he realized and then braked faster than he expected BUT didn't turn because in a normal car, that would be risky.
