"The song wasn’t identified, but 'gang signs soon led to 95 percent of the room' hitting each other...."

From "Song prompts 200 teens to explode into massive fight at skating rink, witnesses say."

IN THE COMMENTS: You can tell I want to know what the song is. Fortunately, Ignorance Is Bliss helped me out — "I'm guessing this was the song":

AND: If you can skate the hell out of that hitting-everyone-in-the-rink scene, here's music to skate on home by:

Following the sign we used to yell "pom pom pullaway" and skate to safety across the ice rink. I guess there are other skating traditions that deserve our respect.

Afro-Nordc biathlon ice skating will be an experimental event at the next winter olympics. I hear Tonyaa Harding may come out of retirement.

There are gangs in Roanoke County, Virginia? We’re doomed.

Hmmm...what is missing from this story???

So other than the one line fact of a fight broke out at a skating rink.Zero other facts.
Journalism is dead. The could have at least speculated that the fight was triggered by President Trump's tweets.

I saw Jonah Goldberg on Book TV and he said that the human brain is hardwired for tribalism. I agree.

I’m hardwired as an American, Nebraskan, Creighton alum and Catholic.

Tribalism can be good and bad. Sunni v Shia have been killing each other for thousands of years. Creighton has been beating Nebraska in basketball for about 100 years.

Humphhh. Pretty half-assed "teens".

I picture the Dance Hall scene from West Side Story, but then I'm old.

Well, you've got a brand new pair of roller skates
I've got a brand new piece
I think you ought to take them skates off
And hand 'em over to me

Sebastian বলেছেন...

Ah, "teens." Right.

In Europe, they have "youth." Not sure the youth skate.

But gangs. Haven't we been told they're no biggie?

Didn’t know roller skating was still around. Toughie Brasuhn would be proud

All juveniles up in the fighting "were turned over to their parents or caretakers...”

They're in big trouble now.

"My Way" as a karaoke song causes Filipinos to kill each other.

@Rob, MS-13 is supposedly out here in the Shenandoah Valley. But I don’t worry because the Democrats assure me they have the spark of divinity inside themselves. That will last only until they rape and murder the child or grandchild of a prominent Democrat.

Perfect.

Incredible the sort of microaggression and cultural appropriation people used to get away with.

When I was growing up in the 1950s, roller rinks drew a tough crowd. Maybe you called the people "greasers." Where I lived, the term was "hoods" (as in "hoodlum").

Ann Althouse বলেছেন...

There's something charming about the permanence of the American tradition of bad teenagers at the roller rink.

You mean it wasn't "Baby It's Cold Outside"?

When you pull up videos of fights on Youtube, it almost always involves a certain low class of people, which isn't unique to any race or color.

You can just as soon find two white whales getting their 300 pound asses out of their electric store carts long enough to have it out in the isles of Walmart right in front of their children as you can black girls pulling each other's weaves out at Denny's.

I thank God that I was born into a stable, educated middle class family that saw to it I got a good education, learned morals and ethics, and how to use words to settle my arguments.

That reminds me, I have to remove my ccw pistol from my truck before I drive down to visit family in Illinois (Illinois recognizes no out-of-state permits).

what is missing from this story

Diversity or color class, which is especially poignant when framing a close association between, say, "Jew... White privilege", and guns, which may have been a song.

You know, we need to talk about the disparity of bad behavior at this rink. I want to see some equal opportunity brawling.

No shots were fired. Nobody saw nothin’.

Just saw a case on this in NY. Seems to me crossing state lines shouldn't make you a criminal. Especially if you're in legal possession of an inanimate object. Seems to violate the Constitution in several spots. One:
**************
Article. IV.
Section. 1.
Full Faith and Credit shall be given in each State to the public Acts, Records, and judicial Proceedings of every other State.
******************
And further down in Article IV:
**************
Section. 2.
The Citizens of each State shall be entitled to all Privileges and Immunities of Citizens in the several States.

I clicked on four different links looking for a good video of the ice skating brawl, but couldn’t find a damn thing. I’m sticking with the NHL from now on.

To this day I always associate indoor roller skating with a sore throat.

Cannot hear Kung Fu Fighting without thinking of the inestimable Mark Stein:
Had John O'Sullivan and Kathryn Lopez chanced to be strolling by the Driftwood Beach Bar on the Isle of Wight when, in the course of oldies night, Simon Ledger performed "Kung Fu Fighting," they would have had no grounds for complaint, even if he'd done the extended dance remix. However, the passersby in question were Chinese, and so Mr. Ledger was arrested for racism. In such a world, words have no agreed meaning. "There were funky Chinamen from funky Chinatown" is legal or illegal according to whosoever happens to hear it. . . . .

Two men say exactly the same thing and they're investigated for different hate crimes. On the other hand, they could have sung "Kung Fu Fighting" back and forth to each other all day long and it wouldn't have been a crime unless a couple of Chinese passersby walked in the room.

Who the hell is Amy Sedaris, about whom I only ever see any mention on this blog, and why is anyone supposed to care about her, her wonderfully wealthily-decorated Greenwich Village pied-a-terre, or anything else?

Talk about "marginal", Amy Sedaris is epitomal.
