Strange blue light.

"A transformer fire in Queens sent an eerie blue light flooding the nighttime sky Thursday night as electricity flickered in homes and an airport was plunged into darkness."

Finishing this post I thought I might have a tag for "strangeness." Here are the suggestions I saw as I started to type the word:

So I could see that I don't have a "strangeness" tag (or "label" as Blogger calls it), but I do have 2 tags for "Dr. Strangelove" (the second one created after the software started blocking apostrophes in the tags). And I see the old "written strangely early in the morning" tag. I don't think of using that anymore, because I'm often up and posting before 5.

Reminds me of the nickname for poor-fielding 60's first baseman Dick Stuart: Dr. Strangeglove.

Was it a terrorist attack? That's what I want to know.

“Written strangely early in the morning” has long been one of my favorite tags. It’s just so very Althouse.

My other 2 favorites are probably “insect politics” and “animals are jerks.”

Off topic, but I am very thankful Centurylink is up and working again after an all day outage yesterday. Apparently something happened to take down their entire internet service across the country. It is kind of strange that I have not seen it mentioned anywhere but on one local TV news cast.

As I recall from Tidy-Bowl and Efferdent commercials, that blue color “means it’s working”.

pparently something happened to take down their entire internet service across the country.

Poorly tested software upgrade? Just a guess, but I would put money on it.

Interestingly, the same light appeared over Queens the night Trump was born.

I mentioned the outage of CenturyLink yesterday, via a dialup connection.

I didn't know it was nationwide though. I thought probably just central Ohio or something.

You follow Jake the Asshole?

An NBC youtube video of it has some audio, a hum with peaks at 118Hz and 236Hz, rather than 120Hz, etc, which I attribute to an intergalactic red-shift caused by the aliens hypothesized by Drudge. And by Alienogenic Intergalactic Warming, of course.

If you have Gen-Z grandkids, you might want to have a "Stranger Things" tag.

The CenturyLink outage was found at 5am EST on the 27th and was working this morning at 6am, but not last night. Very long technical help call center line, I never got through. I'd thought it was just me until they started putting an announcement on the call center line that it's not just you, about 3pm.

Thanks, Lyssa.

There's word of a CenturyLink gofundme drive.

It may be time for another name change. CenturyLink used to be United Telephone and then Sprint, as I recall the telephone bill history.

No transformers ever blew when Obama was president.

Cherenkov radiation? Blue flash of criticality event?

Hagar বলেছেন...

In the paper this morning, the Municipal Court shut down due to the outage as did parts of Bank of America, and I think the local water authority had some kind of a problem, etc.

And so on in pockets across the country.

It was United Telecom somewhere in there. I inherited some as Carolina Telephone and Telegraph. There were a couple of other forgettable spinoff names between Sprint and Centurylink.

CenturyLink DSL modems don't self-recover. Once they have internet, they stick with it even if the internet is gone, and they won't notice it coming back. You have to recycle the power to correct it. Maybe an IP assignment thing.

Anyway maybe somebody has to physically go around resetting stuff.

The only high power blue flashes I got as a kid was mercury vapor tubes in the ham radio amplifier.

The favorite tweet I saw about it: "Movie Studio goes to Great Lengths to publicize new Bumblebee movie" Something like that.

Anyway, I would have thought this to be quite a news item, considering all the previous speculation about the vulnerabilities of the US internet systems.

Strangelove, Kubrick, blue, otherwordly: perfect

The intensity of the light and the visibility (through the clouds) were impressive but not surprising. The surprising part, to me at least, is how long that arc/arcing lasted. I would have thought a number of automatic systems would have shut it down pretty quickly, but that sucker lasted for a while.

Three days late. NY could have had a Blue Christmas.

Thank you. Thank you very much.

At CenturyLink's official site, find a reliable local provider of high speed internet, phone and TV services to homes as well as large and small businesses.

Much of New York City's infrastructure is ancient. Perhaps if news organizations could still afford reporters someone might have looked up whether perhaps this transformer predates the Eisenhower administration?

Rick.T. বলেছেন...

Hmmm. A blown transformer on our block in Chicago was an annual summer event when we lived there - a very loud bang, followed shortly by a whiff of singed squirrel fur. No blue lights, though.

The writing was written is a strange manner or it was strange to be writing then?

An AT&T software upgrade took down the long distance network in 1990. Some coder in C doing demorgan's laws in his head.

I also thought the blue light lasted too long, considering how bright it was and how much power must have been involved. Electrical events are usually quick as a flash. And what made the light blue? I guess the truth will trickle out at the speed of water.

Responsibility theater

“When an emergency strikes, it’s critical that Americans are able to use 911 to reach those who can help," FCC Chairman Ajit Pai announced Friday. "The CenturyLink service outage is therefore completely unacceptable, and its breadth and duration are particularly troubling. I’ve directed the Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau to immediately launch an investigation into the cause and impact of this outage."

My family went to NYC yesterday for a day trip from Baltimore. We got on the Amtrak train at 9:10pm and just missed this. I'm so pissed that we didn't take the next train and have a chance to see such an eerie site in the skies above the Big Apple.

This is very beautiful and I plan to spend some time with this later. Thanks, Ann.
