I grew up believing that Jim Jones was a Christian cult leader. But eventually I learned that Jones, while maintaining Christian trappings, was a left-wing idealogue. (I realize this is now common knowledge, but it was a surprise to me.) His rhetoric actually mocked the Bible and Christianity. He was a fan of Huey Newton and other radicals. His ties to the Democratic Party in San Francisco were deep and far-reaching. The Dems covered for him. (One more reason why Harvey Milk does not deserve his hero status.) Some Peoples Temple members were killed before the movement even went to Guyana, if I recall.
On this day, we remember the victims of socialist utopias everywhere, and renounce the works of those who believe that next time it will be different.
Raise a glass, but drink milk or something.
And poor Guyana. They need to have a spectacular event to diminish the one thing people remember about their country. Or they should just merge with a neighboring nation.
Jonestown, where the term "drink the Kool-Aid" entered our lexicon.

Today I fashioned four taper candle holder centerpieces out of birch logs and cooper tubing. We will decorate our Thanksgiving tables with them. I'm not usually anxious when working with wood, but flattening one side of an odd shaped log on my table saw made for digit risky business. I've got to get me jointer. Happy to report we have our four candle holders, and I still have 10 complete fingers. All's well that ends well.

The Speaker of the House was intended to be the Speaker for all of the House and should really be chosen by a bi-partisan vote.
The majority party would still have a party leader and whip to lead them in partisan matters.

OK, I read the Wikipedia article.
Nancy Pelosi goes far beyond her money-raising prowess. She is also reputed to be the best vote counter ever. But this is supposed to be what the party whip is for.
Previous noted Speakers have also been political leaders in their parties and of the country, but Pelosi does not seem to think that is part of the job. I am sure I have read at least one flat statement of hers to the effect that "the party leadership" sets policies and her duty is just to see they are carried out, and today's Democrat Party in the House certainly seems to be run that way.
I cannot think of any past Speaker - great or not so great - that would ever have said such a thing as: "We have to pass this bill so that we can find out what is in it!"
That statement shocked me to the core. I cannot believe that any previous Speaker would ever have consented to push a bill through the House without even having been told what was in it. Most would have insisted on their views being incorporated in any bill presented or forget it. But Pelosi's intellect appears not to rise to aspirations on that level.

I have a very good friend, a high school teacher, who lives in Wisconsin. She's hated Walker with the heat of a thousand suns since he was first elected. She said the exact same thing. She is a liberal Democrat with whom this conservative can actually have intelligent, interesting political discussions. Except where Walker is concerned.

FRitz: there was a movie called "Hysteria" based on the hypothesis that women's apparent mental problems were entirely based on the fact that they were not being sexually satisfied. I think this is the modern understanding of "mental illness" in women: they are not ill, and it is men's fault.
Women generally have higher rates of mental disorders, with some exceptions that manifest in boys at high rates. And women are literally medicating their way to a group-think set of milestones. k
