This is the minister for women of New Zealand, who bicycled to the hospital to give birth.

Via "Pregnant Minister Cycles to Hospital to Give Birth" (NYT), which includes this info:
[Julie Anne] Genter, who was born in Minnesota and studied at the University of California, Berkeley, joined the left-leaning Green Party as a volunteer shortly after migrating to New Zealand in 2006, and she has represented the party in Parliament since 2011....

On its Twitter account, the Green Party declared Ms. Genter’s bicycle journey to the hospital “the most #onbrand thing ever.”
ADDED: That's an e-bike.

CORRECTION: She's not the prime minister (as I originally had in the post title). She's the minister for women and associate minister for health and transport. (The first paragraph of the article is about the prime minister, a bit confusingly.)

Agreed. Having a car that is too small to meet your needs is definitely #onbrand for the Green Party.

rehajm ayon kay ...

New Zealand is very green. Also not much car/truck traffic so a dailating woman would be safe pedaling to the birthing suite. Assuming she was dailated.

If she pedaled to the hospital 9 months prior to giving birth that’s some other New Zealand thing entirely.

tcrosse ayon kay ...

Not enough room in the car for the support crew. This prompts the question: How Many New Zealanders does it take to deliver a pregnant woman to the hospital? One to pedal the bike and a dozen to signal her virtue.

Welcome to universal healthcare!

The Crack Emcee ayon kay ...

Wait - the Prime Minister of New Zealand is from BERKELEY?

I am staying far, far away from that country....

Lindsey ayon kay ...

Seriously. Isn't the support supposed to be waiting for you at the hospital? You don't pick them up on the way. I'm imagining a very funny Monty Python skit.

Some crazy Berkeley chick made it big in New Zealand politics?

I just hope she doesn't make soup out of the placenta.

Congratulations to her, her partner, and their unPlanned baby. The first three trimesters is a period of Choice that is a first-order forcing of catastrophic anthropogenic child care.

Rabel ayon kay ...

Ripe, but not Prime.

Left Bank of the Charles ayon kay ...

She’s a government minister but not the prime minister. Julie Anne Genter is the Minister for Women, Associate Minister for Health, and Associate Minister for Transport. So this may be her perfect PR stunt.

The Prime Minister of New Zealand is Jacinda Ardern.

David-2 ayon kay ...

Too bad New Zealand under her leadership is such a poor country they don't even have taxis (or Uber!) in their major cities.

JackWayne ayon kay ...

I’m sure this lady did exactly what appealed to her and didn’t happen because of a conscious decision for political gain. Her history shows that it’s a 100% true event. She hasn’t just drink the Koolaid, she drank the Koolaid store dry. I bet the idea popped into her and she couldn’t resist. “Here, hold this.” It would have taken a heart of stone not to laugh at all the bases touched in her lifetime. Have some pity for the baby. The indoctrination will start soon.

Birkel ayon kay ...

“...partner...”

That word doesn’t sit well with me.
I like wife or husband better.

If this made her happy, great for her.

JPS ayon kay ...

The “left-leaning Green Party”?

What does it take to be called leftist? This Berkeley-educated Minnesotan is probably their right-winger.

SteveR ayon kay ...

When my wife was in labor (three times) it would have been unsmart to do something like that. Some virtues are worth signaling I guess.

I went to grad school in a Canadian prairie town in the 70s with a guy from northern California. His girlfriend kept her placenta in their freezer. They also painted their VW Minibus with paint brushes.

(As a side note, after knowing the guy for over a year, we discovered that we had gone to the same high school in a suburb of Los Angeles but not at the same time.)

“The Prime Minister of New Zealand is Jacinda Ardem.”

Well that fact spoils the whole “having it all” narrative. It must remain hidden.

buwaya ayon kay ...

Whatever.
She had a baby, a good thing in itself, no matter how silly she was about it.

If you can get her lot to make this fashionable, pedaling to the hospital in labor, followed by a retinue, every couple of years, that would go a long way to solving your demographic problems.

Think about it, if you can make it a status symbol they will try to do this as often as they can.

mccullough ayon kay ...

Nice try with the bike but having a baby increases carbon dioxide emissions. That little carbon emitter is her fault now.

Phew, lucky for us

Can't we start an emigration program for lefties from racist Amerikkka? I mean, they must eager to leave anyway, so it shouldn't cost much.

Or fund a new program at UC Berkeley, "Study Abroad, Stay Abroad"?

Joanne Jacobs ayon kay ...

The prime minister, Jacinda Ardem, had a baby in June. She also has a "partner" rather than a husband. But she didn't bike to the hospital.

She rode a bike to have her delivery induced? I just spent all afternoon reading about how inhumane and monstrous it was for ICE to make a woman drive herself to the hospital to get induced because they arrested her husband for being an illegal immigrant (and, oh, by the way, a murderer).

I guess they should have impounded the car and given her a bike.

stevew ayon kay ...

Unh... ok. Need I have an opinion about this?

”In another part of the forest, the New Zealand government has just prohibited non-citizens from buying into the country's red-hot real-estate market.”

They were talking about prohibitions on the purchase of existing homes. You sure the law was actually passed?

DCS ayon kay ...

Doesn't look 42 weeks pregnant. Dates are wrong or the baby has IUGR.

tcrosse ayon kay ...

Here you go, Mike.
Read it and weep.

Michael Fitzgerald ayon kay ...

The minister of transportation and she couldn't wrangle a ride to the hospital? Either that is a lie to justify the PR stunt, or New Zealand is a poor, underdeveloped country.

Michael K ayon kay ...

New Zealand made a hard ;eft turn a few years ago after a nice market economic boom. I don't know enough about their politics to know why but Australia has also gone left the past 3o years which is a disappointment.

I like Australia a lot but Queensland seems to be the only conservative spot left.

Hindi-nagpakilala ayon kay ...

Induced? That's like a planned event. I'm now officially unimpressed.

gilbar ayon kay ...

as numerous folk have mentioned, she's just an mp (minister of Parliament), not a PM (prime minister)

Much MORE Troubling. Her partner's name is: Peter Nunns
WHAT SORT OF A FREAK goes out with a woman named Peter Nunns?
WHAT SORT OF A FREAK is an mp for The GREEN Party, and HAS A MALE PARTNER?
I'm sorry, that's just weird (unless, Peter's name used to be Tabitha, i guess that'd be okay)

n.n ayon kay ...

Buying a home in New Zealand just got a lot tougher for most people.

The country's parliament on Wednesday passed a law banning foreigners from buying into most parts of its residential property market as the government seeks to cool red-hot house prices.

Asset inflation blew up our mortgage market. Thanks Freddie and Fannie for redistributing the change. Obamacare was an attempt to suppress visibility of a similar phenomenon in the "health care" sector.

Original Mike ayon kay ...

Thanks, tcrosse.

I think we have to assume that the pregnancy was a natural conception, and that "partner" implies an unconventional relationship between a woman and a man, that still meets the psychological standards for the so-called "cis" label (i.e. feminine female and masculine male, respectively). Perhaps a cismarriage, but they have elected to forego the traditional appellations.

Scott ayon kay ...

She could probably sell her bicycle seat on eBay for a fortune.

n.n ayon kay ...

Yes. Hopefully, she Planned... I mean, planned, ahead and purchased her carbon credits for the happy occasion. Also, there is evidence, Chelsea Clinton: ‘Roe’ Helped Add ‘Three and a Half Trillion Dollars to Our Economy’, that GDP progress followed when women were labeled "barefoot and pregnant" and motherhood was denigrated.

They advocate it for all others.

It's not as though she was in labor. She was going to the hospital to have labor induced. So, BFD, IMO.

Minister for Women sounds a little retrograde, reminiscent of when newspapers had a women's page with sewing, cooking and God knows what else, presumably to keep their pretty little heads occupied. Enough with the microaggessions, New Zealand. They should all be ministries for women.

Just about everyone says partner instead of husband or wife in NZ. Not surprised they passed the law foreigners can't buy homes. It seems pretty easy to pass totally new policies just cuz they see a problem.

tim maguire ayon kay ...

Yawn. She wasn't in labor, so the actual story is "pregnant woman rides bike."

And that's before getting to the "Added: that's an e-bike."

So she didn't even do that.

The article serving as the source for footnote #2 says she has dual citizenship. It also says she left the U.S. in 2002 on account of the reelection of George W. Bush.

If she was quoted on that, we know she is pretty fucking libtarded, and she should know (or could do a quick search to see) that 2002 was not a U.S. Presidential election year.

Danno ayon kay ...

That is footnote 2 to her wikipedia reference.
