"Being a part of this protest hasn’t been easy. I thought I was going to be by myself out there. Today I had an angel with me with Albert being out there. I’m grateful he sees what’s happening, and he wants to do something about it as well."
From "N.F.L. National Anthem Protests Resume With Players Kneeling and Raising Fists" (NYT). The quote is from Kenny Stills took a knee along with his Dolphins teammate Albert Wilson during the anthem before the preseason game last night. They were the only knee-takers this week, and there were also a couple players who raised a fist.
Did you notice it's time to pay attention to football again? It's early August. I notice that the Dolphin who raised a fist last night (Robert Quinn) is wearing a winter hat...
You don't need a hat in August in Florida, and — think about it — you don't need football.

Hard Knocks started, too. Cleveland Browns this year!
"As a black man in this world, I've got an obligation to raise awareness,'' Quinn said. "If no one wants to live in unity, that's why we're in the situation we're in.''
So, he has 'an obligation' to put us 'in the situation we're in'?
A man wearing his hat during the anthem is also disrespectful. It used to be hat over heart, not hand (when did that start? We kids didn't do it on military bases).
Plucking the golden goose, one feather at a time.
Idiot police brutality protest meets idiot flag ritual.
But I'm not a sports fan.
Who cares about the Dolphins? In fact I no longer even care about my former favorite NFL team. I'd rather read a book than watch an NFL game.
Another witless victim of Russky agitprop.
I really can't believe these guys. It's a crucial must-win preseason game and they're thinking about something other than the immediate job at hand? They obviously don't have the mental dedication to winning that is essential in the post-Al Davis NFL. They should be replaced by players who WANT to win. And at their prices, winning isn't everything. It's the only thing.
Is there a point where they think: this kneeling protest isn't getting my point across well? Because it isn't. People love football and the good feelings it brings a community. You can't make football stressful AND still ride the popularity in order to make your point. Take your football fame and find a way to make your point, sure. But these guys are going to destroy their own platform.
Won't be watching. I began to give up on NFL before all this even started. Found it was wonderful to get my Sundays back, so many good things to do, didn't miss it at all. I will continue to watch college football, which is much more entertaining, and will attend a few games as well. Also, will be watching baseball as much as possible. Three great divisional pennant races shaping up in the National League, will be much more enjoyable than anything the NFL has to offer. Better broadcasts, too, and not a whiff of politics, either on the field or in the broadcast booth.
Sometimes when people are on the Road to Ruin, and they've lost their brakes, the best thing you can do is just get out of the way.
Rapist Jameis Winston had a good game against the Dolphins. His three game suspension for sexually assaulting another woman doesn’t apply to the pre-season so he got to play last night. So it’s good these two Dolphins players are raising awareness about injustice.
Awareness of what, exactly? I like professional football but don't pay attention until the real games begin. I record the games and watch when it is convenient. The recordings never capture the playing of the anthem so I've never seen these protests. And besides, I don't care.

Ann,
"Did you notice it's time to pay attention to football again? It's early August. I notice that the Dolphin who raised a fist last night (Robert Quinn) is wearing a winter hat..."
That most likely wouldn't be a "winter hat" to him, but the "knit cap" black dudes wear year round, signifying a connection to the ghetto and not the ski lodge.
These disrespectful retards are ensuring Trump's re-election.
Fuck them. Jerry Jones doesn't stand for that sort of shit, and the dolphins owner is a pussy for not cutting them.
The NFL is going the way of boxing... from massively popular to a niche sport that only a few watch.
The salary bubble is sustained by TV revenues. When that declines, the bubble pops.
"But these guys are going to destroy their own platform."
Well, protesting by disrespecting the flag and anthem means trying to destroy their actual "platform," the US of A--not just the NFL.
For some, the destruction is deliberate--they despise America. Certainly the outsiders egging them on do.
Fans got that message loud and clear.

That's a misreading. He feels he has an obligation to raise awareness of the situation we've been put in - which you, obviously, are not aware of. Here's a white guy describing it, at 22:30, if that helps.
The salary bubble is sustained by TV revenues which are primarily owed by Disney.
These are going away as Disney shareholders are not going to eat a bunch of losses party due to preening morons that don’t even understand what they’re lrotesting.

In the Era of Trump's America, are t-shirts with fake statistics considered "fake news", and what should be done about them?
"Did you notice it's time to pay attention to COLLEGE football again?"
Correction.
The NFL is more than dead to me.
Badgers might be number one this year per some writer.
Such vanity, why does he think God approves of his disrespect for his country, his employer and the fans who made him wealthy?
Owners and the league shouldn’t punish players for these types of quiet protests. Raising a fist or taking a knee is fine. But get rid of the rapists and wife beaters. It makes the league look bad.
Is #WontBeWatching a thing on Twitter? If not, why not? (No, I am not on Twitter or any other social media.)
The boxing analogy is a good one.
Chronic head trauma and all.
The only thing that would save the sport would a maximum weight rule and that won't happen until it is too late.
When cops see this, they stop shooting criminals trying to kill them.
Does anyone think these guys really believe these protests will save a single black life? They may be dumb enough to think that, but I suspect they know it's not effective at anything other than pissing off people they don't like. They do it only to be seen doing it, so they can polish their bona fides with the resistance. To show they are not suck ups t "the man", while accepting his money to perform for him. It's done for their own aggrandizement with the people they want to impress. It can't possibly accomplish anything else.
With CTE, the NFL is going away within 20 years. So is college football.
He feel obligated to perform a useless stunt that just hardens people against his cause. Good thinking.

Yeah, your brother's/cousin's/friends family has been suffering from violence, today or forever, and you're all watching different things unfolding in the media - with no cops ever punished for misdeeds while expecting/demanding to get an outstanding level of cooperation from people cheated by them and the black criminals whites trapped them with - and then that anthem plays.
How dare they.
I didn't watch a single NFL game last year, not even the Super Bowl. That was the first time in a long time that I'd skipped a season. As long as the players make it a spectacle about themselves, I'll continue to find other ways to enjoy my Sundays.
Just for the record, I believe they have free speech rights to mount their protests. I also have rights to tune them out if I want.
Since moving from Colorado to Alabama six years ago, I've watched a lot more college football. The games are more entertaining and face it, we didn't have much in the way of college football in Colorado. Oh, the AF Academy could be entertaining but CU wasn't a very good team. Alabama is a different story. I can binge watch multiple college games on Saturdays and not watch any NFL games on Sunday, Monday, or Thursday.
Does this not remind you of the how the Socialists rail against capitalism - the funding mechanism for all things their grand schemes? The players railing against the flag, which alienates a large portions of their (paying) fan base. Foresight is not a liberal strong suit.

Other people with other means are actually making progress while these guys preen.
In fact these protest probably get more black men killed when they feel encouraged to resist police.

“That most likely wouldn't be a "winter hat" to him, but the "knit cap" black dudes wear year round, signifying a connection to the ghetto and not the ski lodge.”
It still makes them look like pussies.
BTW - I'm more troubled that you guys don't understand the protest than you're against it. If you understood it, and were against it, that would be one thing. But you're against YOUR ASSUMPTIONS about it.
That's tragic for everybody.

Someone show me one football player who did one damn thing in the off season on their time to further their issues. Police brutality is only an issue during the season? The NFL must suspend players and punish teams, or go the way of the dodo.
Has anyone asked the kneelers their thoughts on the carnage in Chicago last weekend?
Have any of the players gone to Chicago and done anything to stop the violence? Kneeling is easy virtue signaling...what have they actually done?

This all got started when a journeyman quarterback tried to impress his new girlfriend who happened to be a SJW.
"Serious question: is there a point where white Americans think the same thing of their outlook/history/place in this world?"
The American ideas are stronger and more successful than ever, and they have done more for Blacks and the rest of the world than any other system. In addition, no other group has spent more effort, words, money and lives exposing, fighting and trying to remediate it's own mistakes. It's not exactly something to be ashamed of at this point in history. African and Asian societies? Not so much. So the answer is yes they do, and they do it much more than others evr have.
The players are saying "look at a problem"
The players are saying "fuck you Whitey" and everyone knows it.
People do seem to dislike them a lot. Do they plan on doing anything about it?
We're not the ones getting shot at, 99.44% of the time.
If you are taking a knee during the anthem then you are disrespecting the shared ceremony that is supposed to bring everybody together in the stadium. If you are calling our shared flag a racists symbol then you are the one with a warped view and highlight your own ignorance and failure to appreciate this country. Because you have hijacked the one sporting event I used to look forward to, and the DNC-Media complex has sided with you and made clear that the whole point of the NFL is protest, there is nothing that attracts me to the game.
Should a significant amount of people feel like I do, and based on the ratings decline I think many do, then your selfish little act is much more like Roseanne's fatal tweet than Juan Carlos raising his fist. Get it? The show only goes on as long as an audience is willing pay. If stadiums don't sell out, then the game is blacked out locally, and revenues decline, and soon your million dollar contracts are null and void. Is the faint hope your childish tantrum will "woke somebody" worth destroying the thing we all used to enjoy together? I don't think so.
So long NFL. And let me add a very sarcastic, "Thank you Roger, you fucking idiot!"
The Crack Emcee said...People do seem to dislike them a lot. Do they plan on doing anything about it? A re-branding, maybe?

@Crack, I think you’re the one who has to go learn some history. Back in the late 1960s liberal well-meaning do-gooders wanted to fix the problems of the inner city ghettos. And they — we! — were told on no uncertain terms to butt out, Black people would fix Black problems. Fair enough, but it’s been fifty years and you can’t fix them, or at any rate you didn’t. If you watch the old sitcoms, the guys are always going on about "the fights". It was a huge sporting event, and on TV all the time. Nary a mention about football...
A generation ago, the Sunday games and Monday Night Football were the center of "guy talk". Now, with hundreds of channels + YouTube and all the other social media, the NFL is losing eyeballs.
Teams are worth billions, and that's a tempting target for the personal injury lawyers. Like tobacco and asbestos, once the first huge lawsuit is won, it will start the self-funding chain reaction that will reach down to PeeWee football before it runs its course.
Given the undeniable medical evidence of head trauma, the personal injury lawsuits teams and the league will lose, and declining viewership, I suspect the NFL as we know it today is going to disappear.
As the man once said, "slowly at first, and then all at once".
“Jerry Jones doesn't stand for that sort of shit,”
Given the Cowboys pre-game performance last year in Phx, that statement is exquisitally ironic.
The problem is that it's an "empty gesture." Millionaire athletes insisting on committing empty gestures to poke their fans in the eye (the guys who ultimately pay their large salaries) makes no sense.

America's constant immigration flow makes it difficult to ascribe responsibility, let alone demand any kind of reparations.
For example, I personally know an Asian family who legally immigrated to America just in the last 15 or so years. Are THEY to be held responsible for America's history of slavery and racism? Is doing something to fix America's race problem even partly their responsibility?
My own ancestors immigrated to America in the 1920s, shortly after the KKK had already gone on its terrorist crusade. To what extent is my family responsible?
Right now, we've got Latin Americans seeking asylum in America. Are THEY responsible for white-black relations in America?
One can't insist that "America is a nation of immigrants," and at the same time demand that all Americans must take responsibility for the negative side of America's past, regardless of when they immigrated here. Immigrants were not told in advance that they would be literally grandfathered into America's past racial sins.

Do they WANT to be Americans? Then they WANT to participate in a country that engaged in slavery and broke it's own credo to punish one group and now find it. What's so hard?
"My own ancestors immigrated to America in the 1920s, shortly after the KKK had already gone on its terrorist crusade. To what extent is my family responsible?"
Did they go fight when Hitler declared war? What responsibility did they have to their nation? Is that responsibility only for the good and noble things or all of it? Stop trying wiggle out of it, because then you're saying you don't believe in it.
"Right now, we've got Latin Americans seeking asylum in America. Are THEY responsible for white-black relations in America?"
I'ma black American - someone you admit my country thinks shouldn't be bothered with after using my people for roadkill - am I responsible to them under the circumstances? And where does "America First" come into this?
"One can't insist that "America is a nation of immigrants," and at the same time demand that all Americans must take responsibility for the negative side of America's past, regardless of when they immigrated here."
They can stay where they are and not take responsibility for America. But, if they take the oath, I think they're kinda stuck.
"Immigrants were not told in advance that they would be literally grandfathered into America's past racial sins."
Then tell them and stop lying. Jesus. You're hung up on easy shit.
Goodell could have, if he was any kind of real leader, channeled the energy of the original protest by addressing it. He ignored it, in very symbolic way. This studied and purposeful blindness that Goodell exhibited is something Crack Emcee has mentioned. Goodell ignoring it and letting it fester made it worse. He is clueless. He “took his eye off the ball” and I’ll never understand why he fumbled this so badly. I blame Roger for ruining the NFL. Players always push boundaries and occasionally try to get their own messages out (remember that Bears qb who feuded with Pete Rozell?), but the Commish is there to deal with problems and keep the focus on the game. Roger let me down.

What I particularly enjoyed about the World Cup was the classy behavior of the players before and after the game started (not always during the game.) Before the games each walked onto the field with a child at his side, then stood respectfully for the national anthems of both countries and almost to a man sang their anthem as well. They are real role models to those kids and you can see the impact they have by kids beaming faces. That's ALL the teams, including those from "shit hole countries" who may actually have a reason to protest. Then, no matter how hard the game was fought, they mingled and shook hands with the referees and each other after the game and before leaving the pitch, often applauding the fans as they went. By comparison, the actions of Black NFL players who try make the game about themselves or some statistically improbable and doubtful grievance are an embarrassment, including Dolphin protester Kenny Stills.
Specifically, Kenny Stills grew up in Eden Prairie, Minn. Just how much police brutality is there likely to be in an affluent suburb of 60,000 that has been named one of Money magazine's "Best Places to Live" in America three times since 2006; has only 3400 African Americans (around 800 aged 18 and under); and reportedly averages only 2 murders, 8 robberies and 11 assaults per year? Just how much opportunity did the local police department have to interact with Mr Stills when he was growing up, let alone brutalize him? What specific traumatic event occurred during Mr Stills youth that led him to believe the police believed his life didn't matter? My guess is nothing. He's just grandstanding and posturing for some reason, probably to earn some type of street cred that is very difficult to get growing up in a place called Eden. Screw him and the NFL. There are other options.

So, you're right: we'll never get anywhere that way.
I am almost 70 years old. I started watching the NFL with my father when I was about 8-10 years old. His team was the Bears and they usually sucked.
I lived in N. FL., and when New Orleans got their team, we saw the Saints every Sunday. Yes, I was an "Ain't".
I watched the NFL all season, every season. Last year, I didn't watch a single game. Probably won't watch one this season either. I didn't even realize that he season had started. Oh well. And there's a reason.
I spent 2 years bleeding all over South Viet Nam, Republic of. And they want to show their lack of respect for my flag. AND, for me to pay for the privilege of watching them do it.
No, I don't think so.
The other thing these idiots haven't thought about is that the whole "Head Injury" thing will be the end of football in this country. People like me realize that there is a danger of serious injury. We get it. Honest. But, we also believe that adults get to make the decision for themselves as to whether the rewards out weigh the risks. The Liberal Progressive Left in this country absolutely will not do that. They fully intend to destroy football. It is, WAS, only people like me who would have defended the game. Again, oh well.

I think even that is more fair than just blaming the players. This cowardice is crippling. It hurts ALL AMERICANS.
Needless to say, I feel the same way about the quacks and psychics and all the rest - we have to start really confronting certain things. With purpose.

Or for that matter, Zimbabwe and in the immediate future South Africa.

You guys keep coming back to the same conclusion: nothing can be done. At all?
@Crack, you need to improve your reading comprehension. I didn’t say “nothing” could be done. I said it would hurt. It will. Are you man enough to (1) accept the pain, and (2) learn to treat your partners — us honkeys— with respect. As to the latter, you can start by dropping your silly demand that “Massa” come in and wave his magic wand and fix things. Sad news for you, Crack, Massa died at Appomattox Court House in April 1865. And there ain’t no magic wand.
One of the leading root causes of inner city poverty and violence is children having children. Since abortion is legal, how about we take it one step farther and make it mandatory for single women who do not have enough personal wealth to provide professional child care? (That last bit is to shut up Hollywood whores who can afford nannies but not husbands.) We need to carve out exceptions for widows whose husbands died after conception, but the whole thing is very doable. I am not saying this is the best nor the only solution, but would work. Sixteen year old girls who want babies would have to convince their splooge stooges to marry them. And come the divorce, wait until the guys discover child support. But are you ready for that level of pain, Crack?
Next step is to let homeowners in the inner city legally buy guns. I doubt that the gang-bangers would enjoy people shooting back at them.
I find it interesting that the NFL preseason is considered real. I read a bunch of sports headlines after these first few games that treated them as utterly serious and consequential.
Baseball Spring Training has an entirely different vibe. There's a clear attention switch between the baseball preseason and the baseball regular season.
Not the NFL. The NFL doesn't have a switch. It's like a refrigerator. It's always on.
"You guys are tiring."
From the looks of it, no.

None of the Luo ever kneel when they play the national anthem in Kenya. Those motherfucking Kikiyu are just looking for an excuse to get out the machetes and chop their sorry Luo asses into dog food.
i think it takes more courage to protest the protesters, but, in either case, it's not the bravest act on record.
I read an article this morning that Chicago that is considering issuing a billion($) or so in bonds to boost the municipal pension fund. One commenter suggested, tongue-in-check, that instead of the gangbangers shooting each other, they shoot the pensioners.
I agree. Several problems solved: 1). The pension fund obligation's are reduced. 2). The kneelers would probably be pleased. 3). The gangbanger mortality would be reduced. 4) Cops would not be blamed.
But then someone responded to the above by the saying the pensioners have already fled to Florida.
Again, the people to blame aren't the players but the owners.
They could've stopped this, but didn't because many of them left-wing Billionaires. One of them, has stated he would pay the players fines.
Its the Left-wing football league and the rest of us aren't welcome.
Good that trump is bashing them.
First, who prays with a fist held in the air? Ok, said it.
Wife and I flipped through channels last night and saw the hometown Texas playing a preseason game. We tuned in, apparently halftime was coming to an end. We noticed immediately that the stadium in Arizona had as many people in it as the sky above had clouds. Then we laughed at the commercials from the Texans trying to sell tickets. Laughed harder when they had a commercial hawking gameday suites. Two, maybe it was three, years ago; it was easier to get a ticket for a Texans game second hand than purchasing it from the box office. All games were sold out, and there was a year old waiting list for a suite. This year, the Texans are predicted to win their division (which is exciting as Black Panther winning a purpose made Oscar), yet they can't sell seats. We tuned off the game after the commercials ended.
There's kind of a balancing act to be just the right kind of black man. You don't want to be acting white, but, on the other hand, you don't want to be too street or ghetto. I suppose the trick is to express your hostility with grammar and allusions to historical injustices.
This is a "hate America" protest.
These protesting players let the cat out of the bag, when they refused to provide a list of people for Trump to pardon. Instead, they sent some crazy left-wing statement about the need for "Justice reform".
Had these people been sincere, they would've stood for the flag, and found other ways to protest, whatever they're protesting. Does anyone know what the hell they're protesting, except Trump?
The NFL is already over. The horse is dead, stop beating it. Time to move on.
NFL is pretty much dead to me.
What have whites done but bellyache and try to blame others for the results of white flight and their own policies?
The violence in Chicago is the fault of Whitey?
Fuck off.
I'm not disputing the legitimacy of the player's positions on the matter. Nor the legitimacy of the matter. However I am disputing the sincerity of their posturing. If they were really serious then the time and place to act wouldn't be at the jobsite but rather off the clock and on their own time. Tickets aren't cheap. The players need a reality check, every seat in the stadium that is filled has been paid for by someone who doesn't need to be there and who probably needs twenty or more years to earn what a star player earns in one year. Football is entertainment. People pay to be entertained, not to be preached at. At the stadium at game time. The players are celebrities. They should use their celebrity status and band together and urge to meet with mayors, governors, state legislators and members of congress and the president to highlight the issue. But on their time, not company time.

"The American ideas are stronger and more successful than ever, and they have done more for Blacks and the rest of the world than any other system."
"Which doesn't come even close to making them sufficient or satisfactory."
We all know that what Whites would do for Blacks will never be sufficient or satisfactory, becuase that's just not possible or even desirable. The dynamic of that relationship is one that gives Blacks power. It reminds me of the traditional power relationship between men and women. Men have had more physical and financial power, but women counter that with their power to make men feel inadequate by showing dissatisfaction, or claiming victimhood. As long as they are dissatisfied, the man needs to do more. A lot of people, both Black and White, would have a lot less power and purpose if the problems were solved.
Besides, even if it was possible, nobody really wants some other group to be their salvation, especially their oppressors.
If we agree that all the work America has done is insufficient, I think it's pretty clear nothing would be enough. Our entire culture from childhood though the elderly is preoccupied with seeing and fixing racism. It's taught in every year of school, it is unsurpassed in the amount of content of it in art, music, theater, and it's in the news 24/7. I would suggest there is nothing else that has had as much effort spent remedying itself than White racism. I'm sure that if it disappeared tomorrow, we would keep talking and teaching like it was still there. Although individuals can make it inoperative in their own lives, the culture will never let it go. Non-racial events will always be attributed to racism, becuase we are thoroughly conditioned and lazy. Blaming racism is easy. Looking further is hard work, and inconvenient.
I've read that there were sixteen police shootings of black men under suspicious circumstances in the past year. In Chicago, there were seventy shootings over a single weekend. And that's not the worst part. Not one of those seventy shootings was witnessed by someone who wanted the shooter brought to justice. These NFL players are not demonstrating against police brutality but are rather demonstrating black cluelessness and cowardice in the presence of gang violence.
You can't please Africans with multi-million dollar contracts.

It will never be time to pay attention to the NFL, so long as the NFL allows players to protest during the National Anthem
What have whites done but bellyache and try to blame others for the results of white flight and their own policies?
Create a country and an economic system that provides the most opportunity and highest standard of living for the most number of people in history.
We live in a country where most White kids want to grow up to be LeBron James, or Cam Newton, or Beyoncé, or Kanye, where we elected a Black president. Tell me again how racist we are.
"It will never be time to pay attention to the NFL, so long as the NFL allows players to protest during the National Anthem"
Agreed, without the conditional clause.
Media-aware blacks are more into shows of social status than achievement.
sinz52: America's constant immigration flow makes it difficult to ascribe responsibility, let alone demand any kind of reparations.
For example, I personally know an Asian family who legally immigrated to America just in the last 15 or so years. Are THEY to be held responsible for America's history of slavery and racism? Is doing something to fix America's race problem even partly their responsibility?
That depends. Did they immigrate here of their own free choice and then start bitching about whitey? Do they bitch about whitey's ancestors, who founded and built a country worth emigrating to? Do they contribute to America's native "race problem" by their own racism?
No? Then they're good. Yes? They don't owe anybody reparations, but they're not in any position to pontificate about the people who've been here for generations owing reparations, either.
My own ancestors immigrated to America in the 1920s, shortly after the KKK had already gone on its terrorist crusade. To what extent is my family responsible?
They aren't responsible for the KKK. But please note that they were not too holy to emigrate to and benefit from such a horrible, racist country, so if they have no moral responsibility for those wrongs, neither do they have any justification for getting on a moral high horse toward the people whose nation-building successes they were perfectly happy to take advantage of.
If they abjure the current widespread disease of immigrant narcissism ("this country was nothing until my people showed up; the founders were bad people"), they're good. If, on the other hand, they buy into the various strands of PC bullshit - e.g., that the founding white demographic comprised people who sat on their asses while "PoCs" built the country - then yeah, they would rightly be dinged for "reparations", being receivers of stolen goods and all. In for a PC penny, in for a PC pound.
Right now, we've got Latin Americans seeking asylum in America. Are THEY responsible for white-black relations in America?
No, but they're responsible for whatever race-hustling bullshit they bring along and engage in themselves, exacerbating the existing problem.
One can't insist that "America is a nation of immigrants," and at the same time demand that all Americans must take responsibility for the negative side of America's past, regardless of when they immigrated here. Immigrants were not told in advance that they would be literally grandfathered into America's past racial sins.
There's so much wrong with the assumptions and the "logic" in this paragraph that it's hard to know where to start. But, at any rate, lol - plenty of recent immigrants seem very happy to be "grandfathered into America's past racial sins" if it's to their own benefit - e.g., affirmative action, "diversity" cheese, SBA "minority" loans, etc.
I think "reparations" are bullshit, but spare me the "don't look at us, we're good and innocent, not like those evil WASPs" immigrant-narcissist hoo-ha. Immigrants "knew in advance" what this country was when they came to it. Plenty of 'em were (and are) at least as racist against blacks as any native white.
"Reparations" are a dumb idea, but nowhere near as weaselly and dumb as the "but my ancestors weren't even here" evasion.
Crack, I don't blame blacks for the fatherless families as much as I blame LBJ and his fucked up welfare scheme: "I'll have them niggers voting Democratic for two hundred years."
Also, as an aside, my best friend and I work together. He is black. He gets completely pissed when someone calls him African American. He is from Panama and his great-grandfather was brought to Panama as a slave but worked as a free man when the French started the canal. His father later worked for the Americans in a well-paid job on the canal which allowed him to afford citizenship for his family.
When his father came here to Dallas to visit him, they went out to the LBJ ranch so they could piss on it.
"If you guys were ever onboard with improving not only black American lives, but this country, you've never shown it, so stop pretending g you're the good guys."
Crack,
I am not responsible for improving your life. You are.
Government intervention such as the Great Society and affirmative action (i.e., quotas) were intended to improve Black American lives. Have they? What else would you like?
I suspect you spend very little time in reflection given how quickly you respond. You try to portray yourself as thoughtful, but come across as venting your emotions and playing a game. My White Guilt credit card is maxed out.
You seem quite comfortable expressing a point of view that assumes external locus of control. That has been a disaster for the Black community. It is also why your arguments fall far short of convincing.
O, to get away from the endless, repetitive political silliness just for a little while. No time like the present to just tune it all out.

What about the President? He is the one who is the Outrage Leader in Chief here. These Trump Cultists are following the lead and encouragement of Trump in this matter and are complicit in the gross mischaracterization (as something that disrespects the flag or this country) of the protesting of police abuse of black Americans by these athletes.

Crack Emcee wrote: "The players are saying 'Look at the problem..." But the reality is that this boring agit prop theater was spawned by a lie: that Michael Brown, a gentle urban giant, was mercilessly gunned down by a demonic white devil cop while pleading for his life. The truth, as even the race hustler in chief's justice department concluded, was that Michael Brown robbed a convenience store and then attacked a cop - and tried to take the cop's gun in the process. And he was shot and killed for his troubles. Therein lies the actual 'problem." "Hands up, Don't shoot!" was and remains an abject fabrication. It's fiction, writ large. And yet Crack Emcee and others insist that America pretends otherwise. More than 70 black Americans were shot in Chicago last weekend - and not a single one of them by a police officer. Conversely, not a single suspect has been arrested for that mayhem. Why? Because the witnesses have been trained at the teat to fear and loathe LEO. "Just look what the man did to poor Mike Brown!!!"
If the NFL had initially collaborated with the players' union to work out a solution, whatever it would've been, ownership and players would be aligned.

I suspect most people know the meaning of these protests out on the football field, but pretend to think they’re about disrespect for this country and the flag. This is disingenuousness on a grand scale.

Inga - I’ll give you some credit for asking why Trump continues to harp on this subject. That’s a fair question.
Now as for why people not being honest above it the reason for these protests - you couldn’t possibly be more full of shit. If the players actually DID something to address the problems they’re supposedly angry about, you’d have a point. Do they talk to their congressman? Start a dialog with a police chief somewhere? Create a defense fund for families affected by police brutality? No to all of the above.
They know EXACTLY what they’re doing by protesting the flag, because we both know that they’ll piss off more people with this act than sway them to their side. It’s a tantrum at best, it’s a “I’m going to piss off whitey” at worst. And you’re utterly delusional if you don’t see that.

How do you know they are protesting the flag instead of what their stated purpose is? This is your assumption. I believe them to be honestly and sincerely protesting police abuse of black Americans.

How do you know they are protesting the flag instead of what their stated purpose is? This is your assumption. I believe them to be honestly and sincerely protesting police abuse of black Americans.
I guess you have to ask why they feel the right time to do protest police abuse of black Americans is during the national anthem at a National Football League game, when everyone is there to enjoy each other and have fun. And enjoying each other and having fun together is a very important thing to a community or nation. Positive bonding.
I suspect most people know the meaning of these protests out on the football field, but pretend to think they’re about disrespect for this country and the flag.
If you're protesting during the National Anthem, then you are disrespecting the country and the flag.
And at that point, it is of no concern what else you are doing, because your act of disrespect places you in complete contempt.
Find some other time to advance your agenda.
“If you're protesting during the National Anthem, then you are disrespecting the country and the flag.”
Do you have any idea of what the many minorities, especially black military members think about these protests? Hint, they don’t consider them to be unpatriotic or disrespectful. Are you now going to accuse those serving in the military of being disrespectful to country and flag?
Dividing reparations between all available responsible parties then and now, that is,all non-blacks who have lived here before, during and after slavery. My share comes to $1.25. But i will need a mailing address.
We non-blacks will throw in the first elected black leader of a western predominently non-black nation, the largest number of black millionaires of any nation, affirmative action and a generous welfare system for which American blacks express their preference election after election. If that's not enough, there are Democrat rulers in big cities who in exchange for black votes grant young black men license to kill each other, to commit 50-60% of the violent crime in their cities and to sexually assault young black women.
Unfortunately, Crack, we can't promise that black crime will go ignored, except by the MSM and Democrat politicians, nor can we stop cops from defending themselves.
We will, however, read your whining insults for a while.

Right. I got every word. Didn't agree with all of them, as white folks do, because they can't ask decent follow-up questions, being too ignorant to know what to ask.
I see how y'all treat Sowell and Williams, like they're the epitome of black thought - though they don't debate anyone, or show up anywhere but where whites can praise them. You didn't notice that, did you? That there's NO video of them addressing blacks?
Of course not. As Bill Burr said about Steve Jobs:

Do you have any idea of what the many minorities, especially black military members think about these protests? Hint, they don’t consider them to be unpatriotic or disrespectful. Are you now going to accuse those serving in the military of being disrespectful to country and flag?
Sure, there are people who like the protests. Good for them.
Democrats have their head in the sky, and Republicans have a 2012 autopsy on race they DESPERATELY want to ignore - and blacks are stuck between all these confused and angry white folks, on both sides, as we're trying to merely figure out how to move forward.
That's America - and it SUCKS.
As far as I'm concerned, National Anthems have been obsolete since the Civil Rights Act of 1964 in America, and the French Revolution of May 1968.
These quaint religious based marching band songs designed for peasants headed to colonial wars; with white silver spoon Generals in glorious uniforms and chrome helmets; planting flags on foreign soil, ended the white Christian supremacy and marching music forever.
Non, rien de rien.
Non, je ne regrette rien.
Car ma vie, car mes joies,

Fists!
“Sure, there are people who like the protests. Good for them.”
Yes, good for them and good on them for serving our country. Let’s hear you folks call them unpatriotic or disrespectful of flag and country because they support these protests and don’t consider them in any way disrespectful.
There wouldn't be a police presents in Black communities if Blacks weren't ravaging and preying on each other.
The national anthem protests by some Black millionaires is the perfect cause for Inga and Howard to support.
It is meaningless and without specific purpose, but it makes White liberals feel virtuous.

I really don't have any intention of doing that. But I still find the protests ineffective, divisive, and poorly aimed. I still think they do more harm than good, especially in the area of race relations. I still think it would be better, and move us farther forward, if they stopped these protests and found some way to actually move their cause forward. I could protest the fact that I want lower taxes, but if I do it by throwing red liquid on people wearing furs, people are going to think I'm protesting furs.
Amazing that you folks were so outraged over someone like Alex Jones who blamed 911 and the Sandyhook massacre on our own government, being kicked off of Facebook and other social media citing free speech issues, yet you are outraged over the free speech of protesting football players. Not one person here said that Alex Jones was unpatriotic and disrespectful of our country to blame them for 9/11 or Sandhook.
What is wrong with you people?

What have whites done but bellyache and try to blame others for the results of white flight and their own policies?
"Create a country and an economic system that provides the most opportunity and highest standard of living for the most number of people in history."
We just happened to use you as roadkill on the way to everyone else's prosperity.
Sorry.

"We live in a country where most White kids want to grow up to be LeBron James, or Cam Newton, or Beyoncé, or Kanye, where we elected a Black president. Tell me again how racist we are."
Other than not killing us, tell me what role whites played in that. Did they spend their youth throwing free throws or dunking? Learning production or choreography?
And that black president heard, on Day One, the side you're on Gahrie - the Republicans - were going to stop his every move.
Yeah, you're just "fellow Americans' all the way.
Protesting the national anthem and the U.S. Space Force is unpatriotic.
God Bless our U.S. Space Force.
Hell, whites used to claimRap wasn't music - gave that line a full-court press - and now you want to taker credit because your kids like it.
Lying pieces of shit.
By acknowledging white privilege, cuckservatives would have to admit their great life is not due to their own sparkling rugged individual brains and balls. It boils down to a poverty of self esteem due to suppressed/subconscious white guilt. Sad

They're not as dumb as having g 13% of your population hating the place they live and the people they live with - for good reason - for all time.
THAT'S DUMB.

No Halloween children will need to be bribed for you.
The comparison with boxing is very apt.
When black culture became pervasive in boxing it died.
The same thing is happening to the NFL.
The predominance of blacks and their culture always serves to ultimately destroy the host. Be it a neighborhood, city, country or sport they always serve as a root cause of the destruction.
Thank God blacks don't want to play baseball anymore.
Do you have any idea of what the many minorities, especially black military members think about these protests? Hint, they don’t consider them to be unpatriotic or disrespectful.
You have to back that assertion up (about black military people). Because it’s bullshit. As for the others - I don’t give a shit. And that’s the whole point of all of this. Sure, it fans the flames of other minorities, but if you’re trying to change minds or make people aware of the issue, you’re doing the opposite.
Are you now going to accuse those serving in the military of being disrespectful to country and flag?
Typical. Set up a straw man, and expect us to argue from that standpoint. Nope.

"Crack, I don't blame blacks for the fatherless families as much as I blame LBJ and his fucked up welfare scheme: "I'll have them niggers voting Democratic for two hundred years.""
The idea blacks are responsible for this - when we didn't even have any power until the 80s - is insane. Whites made all the policies that created what we got now. Especially the fatherless homes. They demanded it.
"Also, as an aside, my best friend and I work together. He is black. He gets completely pissed when someone calls him African American. He is from Panama"
I identify as "black" myself, because, as I stated elsewhere, I got no connection to Africa whatsoever, so the term seems,...not wrong necessarily, but a bad fit.
""Getting rid" of people who think a certain way is actually a pretty terrifying concept."
Mao and Uncle Joe Stalin would disagree.
So would Inga, Howard and Crack.
They're not as dumb as having g 13% of your population hating the place they live and the people they live with - for good reason - for all time.
So we're supposed to pay Black people to like us?
"The football players couldn't be more clear"
Actually they haven't. Tell me *specifically* what they are protesting - in 50 words or less.
You'll probably say "racism" - which now is a meaningless buzz word.

"Crack,
I am not responsible for improving your life. You are."
You guys keep trying your best to distance yourself from being fellow citizens when it suits you - and then demanding blacks treat you like we're a cohesive society elsewhere. You're lying and crazy.
"Government intervention such as the Great Society and affirmative action (i.e., quotas) were intended to improve Black American lives. Have they? What else would you like?"
They seem to have went to women (including whites) and other minorities - which wasn't the plan. Let me guess: blacks fault, right?
"I suspect you spend very little time in reflection given how quickly you respond."
You also don't imagine you guys aren't imaginative thinkers and I've encountered your lame arguments a billion times before - right here on this same blog for years - which makes responding quickly easy. Instead, you act racist and decide I'm not reflective.
Go buy a hood for yourself.
"You try to portray yourself as thoughtful, but come across as venting your emotions and playing a game."
Wait - you guys did admit you have "Mobys and out-and-out racists" going against me here. So, since e they're on your side, who's being disingenuous and "playing a game"? The people who hang with racists and attack solitary black men trying to reason with you, or that black man - acting alone and tryin g to be thoughtful?
Y'all are really sleazy actors.
My White Guilt credit card is maxed out.
You seem quite comfortable expressing a point of view that assumes external locus of control. That has been a disaster for the Black community. It is also why your arguments fall far short of convincing.
Other than not killing us, tell me what role whites played in that. Did they spend their youth throwing free throws or dunking? Learning production or choreography?
Nothing..that's my point..we live in a country where Black people can become wealthy and famous based on their own efforts and talent and do not require handouts from White people.
Actually, I liked having Crack show up on these race related threads - at least it makes more sense than having some ridiculous white liberals telling us what the black man wants.
I mean what Althouse thread on race could be complete with German Inga or some New York City whitebread calling other whites racist?
“Typical. Set up a straw man, and expect us to argue from that standpoint. Nope.”
Except it’s an observation, not a straw man and you can’t argue against it because that would make you appear less than respectful of the military members who support the protests, effectively making you a hypocrite.
My White Guilt credit card is maxed out."
I don't know a single black person who has use for your guilt or asked for it, do you? We ask for "justice" - hasn't changed since MLK died - and you refuse.
Now, what about that makes you likable?
"You seem quite comfortable expressing a point of view that assumes external locus of control. That has been a disaster for the Black community. It is also why your arguments fall far short of convincing."
You hang with Mobys and racists but I'm the one not convincing?
Amazing.
Mike Tyson was the nail in the coffin of boxing.
He brought black street crime to the essence of boxing.
There were always criminals and junkies like Sonny Liston but Tyson put it out there for all to see.
Mike Tyson vs Mitch Green was the ultimate goal expression of black culture.
We just happened to use you as roadkill on the way to everyone else's prosperity.
Black people got the shitty end of the stick for a while, just like every other race and ethnicity has at one time or another. Get over it...Black people and Black slaves were treated better in the US than many other places around the world, indeed better than they are treated in many African countries today.

Oh, stop it. Trump didn't do anything. People are calling him racist over BS like the Central Park 5 - who are guilty as sin - issues they never brought up until he ran for office.
The attacks on him are as false as the attacks these lamers aim at blacks.
"America committed an injustice"
Why do keep going back to that as if nobody acknowledges it. Nothing is more universally accepted in the world today. It's like harping about flat-earthers.
What nation hasn't done terrible injustices? But, America spends a ridiculous amount of time and resources acknowledging and addressing that injustice. Every child learns all about it, everyone pays for it, it sucks up all the oxygen, and it especially sucks the life out of Blacks with distraction and deflection from what matters in life here and now.
Africans also committed a terrible injustice to their own people, and continue to today, but how much attention is given to that. Slavery is happening right now in Africa, but unless you can find a way to blame Whitey, it's not worth anyone's time. That's racism too. The most damaging racism today is racism aimed at Whites that mostly hurts Blacks, but damn, racsim is so irresistible once you feel a victim and have a culprit. It's like crack.
I can't tell if you guys are willingly dense or just plain stupid: America committed an injustice. It has nothing to do with power dynamics. It has to do with right and wrong.
Every nation and people of the world have been both the victims of, and the perpetrators of, injustice. The obsession over it in the US is nothing but power politics.

"The reality is that this boring agit prop theater was spawned by a lie: that Michael Brown, a gentle urban giant, was mercilessly gunned down by a demonic white devil cop while pleading for his life."
Why do I have to keep reminding white people where their humanity ought to be? Forget the line - did that kid need to die? Really? I lived in Yurp and I bet you, same kid, same circumstance, he'd be alive today.
Let's say Michael Brown was a total thug - would he mature? Into what? We'll never know. I know my share of gangstas and they all grow out of it, so what's up?
You guys are cold, heartless killers, wondering how that got out the box,...
We're in Charlotte, and until last year I assumed I would take my boys to at least one Panthers game during their childhood. But I'd feel humiliated in front of them to spend hundreds of dollars and then have to endure political posturing by people done in the course of their employment, and not halted by their employers.

The NFL players are at it again - taking a knee when they should be standing proudly for the National Anthem. Numerous players, from different teams, wanted to show their “outrage” at something that most of them are unable to define. They make a fortune doing what they love......
7:18 AM · Aug 10, 2018
Why don’t you hold Trump responsible for his words? Do you agree with him that the football players who are protesting are “unable to define”? You seem to hold folks here responsible for their words, yet you give Trump a pass. Why?
O, thus be it ever when freemen shall stand,
Between their lov'd homes and the war's desolation;
Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the heav'n-rescued land
Praise the Pow'r that hath made and preserv'd us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause is just,
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust"
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!
Fists!
Praise the Power!
Conquer!
Amen!

"Surprised Crack likes Trump who needs racists to stay in power."
I'm not dumb enough to think - after watching Trump for almost 40 years - that just because a known opportunist like David Duke jumps up, that means The Donald likes him.
To make that connection - when Trump has made it as clear as these football players where he stands - is to repeat the same problem from the opposite side.
The reality is that this boring agit prop theater was spawned by a lie: that Michael Brown, a gentle urban giant, was mercilessly gunned down by a demonic white devil cop while pleading for his life.
Why do I have to keep reminding white people where their humanity ought to be? Forget the line - did that kid need to die? Really?
Nope..if he hadn't have been a criminal thug...he wouldn't have died. If he hadn't of resisted the police, and attacked a police officer, he wouldn't have died.
I want to save the lives of young Black men by teaching them not to be criminal thugs and not to resist police.
The NFL must limit the influence of black culture if it wants to survive.
I would simply outlaw any player who has a criminal conviction or even been arrested. They have no place in your sport. Get rid of the gang bangers, thugs, drug addicts and domestic violence aficionados.
That would serve to give the fans a leauge they can be proud of and end the controversy.
They should schedule the Oscars on Super Bowl Sunday.
That way I could have a two-fer not-watching.
I love the white privilege charge. Where else does one get to assume moral superiority based on skin pigmentation.
If only there was a word for that.

Dumbest question of the day: Because it worked at the Olympics in the 70s.
