Immigration demagoguery.

Demagogue, OED:
1. In ancient times, a leader of the people; a popular leader or orator who espoused the cause of the people against any other party in the state....

2. In bad sense: A leader of a popular faction, or of the mob; a political agitator who appeals to the passions and prejudices of the mob in order to obtain power or further his own interests; an unprincipled or factious popular orator.

An entirely different matter. Were Trump sending people down into Mexico to drag families into the US and separate them, or even hunting down people in the US who had never violated any laws and separated them, I would also be outraged, I mean really outraged, not outraged like some people because Trump made a comment that women like rich powerful men.

2. Don't pretend people aren't murdered by Americans every day in this country. Don't use Ms. Tibbets' tragic murder by one scumbag to foment hate and hysteria against masses of people. That's twice a white American didn't immediately think of blacks or Natives when the subject of America separating families comes up - the most egregious examples of it in US history - but whites still insist we talk too much about slavery and history in this country.

We don't talk about them nearly enough for these pathetic results.

Hagar म्हणाले...

According to what I saw on the news, the farm family did put the suspect through some other Federal identification procedure; just not "e-verify", which they did not claim to have used; that was just a media leap to concussions - again.

Robert puts the argument of the left out their plainly. We can't have a "wall" or use any other method to allow us to vet potential immigrants and bring immigration back under the legal control of our duly elected representatives because that would empower racism. But that's not "open borders"! It's just that, alas, we can't have borders because we aren't good enough as a people to have borders. It's a different thing!

If Ann thinks Trump is being a demagogue on this issue, I'll be very disappointed.

This ad is a response to the Dems' attack on Trump's efforts to enforce the border and immigration laws. Most Americans believe in stronger enforcement of immigration laws. They are not a minority or a mob. They suffered quietly for years under Obama and Republicans who thought illegals were committing an "act of love". This majority of Americans is rejecting the political biases and correctness foisted on them by the political and commercial elitists.

Maybe this is a North/South issue and Northerners just don't get it. If so, they're going to start getting it now after the murder of Mollie Tibbetts.

I also fault the Iowa Republican for hiring the illegal and not using e-verify.

We do NOT want those people here. The next crisis will be Venezuelans fleeing the Socialism that Cookie advocates.

There are at least a billion people who are victims of misrule and criminal classes of politicians.

I had a kid (Hispanic) joining the Army yesterday. He is 17 and those kids need parental consent. He had only one parent signature and there was a death certificate . I asked him what happened to his father. "He was murdered in Mexico."

Lots of these people, legal residents and citizens, cross over into Mexico all the time. Some kids I see have orthodontia done in Mexico. That kid knows how dangerous Mexico is.

Any reference to, let alone discussion of, the negative impacts of immigration (illegal or legal) is demagoguery in the second sense. You can always tell the informed, reasonable citizens from the scapegoating bigots because the former will only discuss immigration within the ambit of knowledgeable "nation of immigrants" bromides and sophisticated allusions to Founding Father Emma Lazarus. Though of late brow-furrowing about the problematic nature of reporting crimes involving attractive young white women is also becoming an acceptable frame for discussing the issue.

I haven't figured out yet why some deaths can be politicized without being decried as "demagoguery", and some cannot. As far as I can see it has nothing to do with how much of a threat to civil peace, or how actively destructive, the roused rabble becomes.

Numerous studies have shown that undocumented immigrants are not more likely to commit violent crimes than any US citizen.

Trump has been constantly been conflating all undocumented immigrants with MS13 and having the ICE go after long-time residents with no criminal record. In fact he's actually deporting crime victims, punishing them for reporting violent predators to the police. And here's the thing, he hasn't stopped at the undocumented. His administration is pushing to go after legal residents for using the ACA and even de-naturalizing US citizens based on paperwork errors. He is systematically closing off many means of entering the US legally by undermining asylum eligibility standards, reducing refugee admissions, and reducing the overall number of visas granted.

It is incredibly obvious what the end goal of Trump's immigration policies is. We're currently in a slippery slope wherein the administration and its promoters keep telling us they're only going after the bad guys but then expanding the definition of "bad guys" to include newer groups. After denaturalizing US citizens and blocking all legal avenues to come here, what's next? Ending birthright citizenship? Deporting people who were born here?

To me, one problem with illegal immigration is the gray zone where immigrants are second-class citizens subject to state power without due process. They have to act illegally to do anything, which erodes respect for the law. Living in the black economy, getting paid in cash, and so on, is bad for our institutions.

Another problem is the economic impact on the poorest Americans already here. Immigration, illegal and otherwise, depresses wages.

The last problem is cultural, if you care about what makes America distinct. Too much immigration at once can turn the US into the countries that people are fleeing from.

What has stoked a lot of this anger has been sanctuary cities letting violent illegals go because they sincerely believe in the rhetoric Robert Cook so kindly outlined above. You are ignoring a lot of other stuff that has happened. Drunk drivers who are illegal aliens who are let go and just disappear. I am sure that the commenters here can provide a longer list.

I presume most fare beaters on the subway are not violent criminals. I also presume that there is a higher proportion of violent criminals among the fare beaters than among those who lawfully paid for entry. My takeaway is that we should do what we can to keep fare beaters off the subway. Others claim that fare beating is not a violent crime and that fare beaters use that tactic simply because they're too poor to pay the fare, so let it go.......DeBlasio, the mayor of NYC, has taken an extremely lenient attitude towards fare beaters. I'm not particularly enraged by the crime of fare beating. Maybe it will work out for the best, but I do know for a fact that it takes only a relatively few number of violent criminals to make the subway unusable for a huge tier of riders........I'm cheap and of a robust size. Back when, I used to travel by subway at off hours, but I knew a great many people who absolutely refused to use the subway. The people who were too intimidated to use the subway were also poor and far more vulnerable than the young, healthy males who were agile enough to beat the fare. In a sense, it was the fare beaters who were oppressing the poor and the marginal.......Does any of this have relevance to the immigration debate?

Yeah, I took the concept for a little rhetorical spin, but I don't think that my spin on your comment was fundamentally dishonest."

Where in anything I have said here do I suggest we should allow uncontrolled, unauthorized immigration across our borders, that we should allow "open borders?" This video and the emotions it seeks to arouse are not to do with simple "immigration enforcement," but has to do with inflaming xenophobic fear and hatred of all perceived to be "other." It is the conflation of "illegal immigrants" with murder, rape, and other violent crimes that appeals to and promotes racism. It would have us believe that every illegal immigrant crossing our borders--a declining number for several years, as I pointed out--is a violent criminal, and it will lead to the perception by many that any or all persons they see who appear to be Hispanic and who speak with an accent are illegal immigrants, and, therefore, rapists, thieves, and murders.

It is you who have no concept of the implications of this video and the thinking behind it. It takes the tragic circumstances and genuine grief of these people who have had loved ones murdered and uses it for blunt propaganda to foster fear, which generates hate. I don't know if (and didn't say) your take on my comments was dishonest, but it is certainly a wild misinterpretation. As I said, the obsessions of the right distort their perception and understanding of any arguments they hear that are counter to their certainties. (And yes, this is true of everyone: we all interpret the world through our perceptions, which are unavoidably colored by our preexisting beliefs. We can't not be this way; we can only be aware of this universal human tendency and try fight against it by attending to fact and recognizing appeals to emotion for what they are.)

अनामित म्हणाले...

AA: How about dealing directly with that problem rather than drawing the line around immigrants who are here illegally.

Because there's a rat's nest of inter-connected problems having to do with tolerance for illegal immigration, that make illegal-immigrant gang crime a distinct problem.

The insistence that any thinking or discussion along those lines should be shut down is not only an irrational and emotional response, as an argument it's well past its sell-by date.

They may also be a problem, but it’s not a violence problem. The lack of rationality is glaring. This is emotional manipulation in pursuit of political power.

I'm not seeing much rationality in your response to this particular instance of "emotional manipulation". News reporting is wall-to-wall "emotional manipulation", on any given issue. So why are you so worked up about this one in particular?

I get the impression that you haven't paid much attention to the immigration issue over the years, never thought it of much importance. So perhaps because of that you don't realize that your complaints here are the same tired old responses that people concerned about immigration have been seeing for years and years and years from people who don't want the issue discussed. "Don't mention the immigrants! Ever! Imprudent immigration policy cannot be the proximate or ultimate cause of any problem!"

And they've been pretty successful in getting sane, civil discussion shut down. So if you have complaints about anybody "demagoguing" the issue, take it up with the people who've put so much money, energy, and emotional manipulation into demonizing anybody who disagrees with them for the last forty years. You're awfully selective in your outrage about manipulation here.

My name goes here. म्हणाले...

Robert Cook said...

"1. We don't have open borders; the rate of illegal crossings has been dropping from several years."

How many illegal crossings does Robert Cook need to see before he would consider the border 'open'? I will answer my own question. If there are 20,000 illegal crossings per month, the border is effectively 'open'.

Just because the all time high was above 1 million does not mean that 240,000 illegal crossings *per year* is not a significant problem.

2. Don't pretend people aren't murdered by Americans every day in this country."

I don't pretend that at all. Most murders are state/local affairs and do not involve the federal government. In this case, however, if the federal government had a robust immigration process (including vetting those coming into the country, and removing those illegally here) murders by illegals could be dropped to *ZERO*.

Your statement says that we need to tolerate murder of people because you would rather the Mollie Tibbets of the country get killed for fear of creating prejudice.

You ignore the fact that if we had a working immigration process much of the prejudice would go away. If everyone had to sign the guest book on the way into the country (or be deported), and all guest workers were given a federal tax ID, and employers were fined, arrested, charged for not using e-verify, and if black market cash payments for labor (at scale) at factories were busted by the feds, then everyone would think that immigrants are the hard working, rule following, society contributing, benefits to society that all right thinking democrats tell us they are.

"Don't use Ms. Tibbets' tragic murder by one scumbag to foment hate and hysteria against masses of people."

That mass of people are those that have decided that they will break the law to get and stay here.

"The hate and hysteria won't be limited to just illegal immigrants, but will spread toward all perceived as 'foreigners,' including legal immigrants and native-born Americans of certain ethnic extractions."

See my comment above. Basically if everyone believed that the immigration process was working correctly there would not be any hysteria.

Robert Cook, you bring up some interesting points:

Don't pretend people aren't murdered by Americans every day in this country.
This argument dances around a central question: What rate of crime (beyond breaking immigration rules) might be expected from illegal immigrants without provoking widespread outrage? There (strangely) doesn't seem to be much discussion about this, but I'd think it would be about zero. After all, illegal immigrants would not want to stir up additional problems that might lead to a crackdown on all illegal immigrants.

The hate and hysteria won't be limited to just illegal immigrants, but will spread toward all perceived as "foreigners," including legal immigrants and native-born Americans of certain ethnic extractions.
Disagree. But I appreciate you making this statement so clearly and honestly. I dislike the rhetorical shell game that dishonestly swaps Americans, legal immigrants, and illegal immigrants (egregious example here: https://www.vox.com/identities/2018/8/22/17768194/mollie-tibbetts-illegal-immigration-crime )
This shell game is founded in the near-religious belief in certain sectors of the left that conservatives are rabid racists and white supremists, rather than fair-minded citizens that expect that laws should be honored, in spirit as well as in letter.

Which position is more demagogic: 1) Immigrants are criminals. 2) People who are opposed to immigration are bigots...........I live in NYC. I have positive feelings about most of the immigrants I have met, and I'm sure that they're good people. That said, I think there's a down side to unlimited immigration and I don't think that someone who finds a way to sneak across the border, then has a constitutional right to remain here forever.......I won't live to see it, but I think if America becomes a white minority country, the whites will get screwed. Maybe over time racial issues will become less intense, but the historical record shows that minorities get screwed in just about every country and in just about every era. I don't want to be part of a minority......Crack: be glad you're not a Luo living in Kenya.

Yeah, but see, I'm not doing it A) ignorantly, without understanding the issues and making my assumptions the point B) based on my proven hostility against them over centuries - which I lie and claim I'm all over now as I constantly try to one-up them C) while denying my own ancestors also went through a criminal phase - some in Chicago - where they shot up the joint and still became productive parts of American culture, and D) while being a racist hypocrite.

We're just different.

Corn farming is almost 100% illegal aliens, except for owners and managers."

This is 1,000% wrong. One American citizen farmer (regardless of race) and farm hundreds of acres of corn all by himself. They have big machines to do the work. Dairy farming, on the other hand, is a different thing.

Yeah, I live in corn country. Illegals milk the cows, but harvesting corn is like mowing the lawn, one guy does it from the seat of a combine, if the combine is not driverless running by GPS.

“I use sea salt in the kitchen, because it has a larger grain and does not have iodine in it, thus improving the taste and mouth feel of the food. So?”

Sea salt certainly does contain iodide — as it should — just no added extra iodide like a lot of mined salts do. You’d be a fool to eliminate trace iodide from your diet. The taste and mouth feel you enjoy comes from other trace minerals.

Same with "Big Maple Syrup," it used to be teams of horses in the woods, then ATVs and snowmobiles, now it's mechanized (vacuum taps) and capital intensive.

So I'm the only person who knows there's a NewAge Movement, and it includes beliefs, and what foods to eat, clothes to wear, music to listen to, etc? Really? I'm the only one?

Or am I just the only one who had a need to understand it?

In 1957, Eisenhower sent the 101st Airborne Division to keep order in Little Rock, Ak and, I think, signaling that he might consider arresting the governor and taking over the state government, if necessary to maintain the supremacy of the Federal Constitution and established government, and Gov. Faubus folded.
In 1963, the Kennedys negotiated a deal with Gov. Wallace, also under the threat of sending in the Army, however much the Kennedys hated the thought of having to do so.

I don't think the current movements toward anarchy will abate until we again get an administration with the gumption to stand up for the Constitution of the United States.

Illegials pick corn kernal by kernal and put them in buckets. It's really labor intensive. It's hard to find Americans who will do the work.
