Most internet challenges are stupid (saw one on the Toronto Star's twitter feed this morning encouraging people to tip waiters 100% of the bill). But this one is evil.
I suspect the person making the challenge saw "Me, You, and Everyone We Know," but this poor girl did not.

There are some seriously stupid young people out there. They walk among us. They commit crimes and post incriminating evidence on social media. They engage in an escalating series of dangerous stunts (cinnamon, eating Tide pods, even setting themselves on fire) all to get likes and upvotes on social media from people they don't know. Like I said, seriously stupid.
With apologies to James Taylor, but I've seen fire and I've seen Dane....

I definitely knew someone as a kid who would attempt this stunt (as well as other crazy stunts I won’t bother to mention) on multiple occasions. I was at an age when playing with fire was fun. I have no idea where our parents were through all this. I can’t imagine what would have happened if we’d had today’s internet around to encouraging us to seek out fame for our stupiditiy.
Systemic government racism prevents white and Asian people from participating in the "fire challenge".

When I was in college a guy in the dorm was drinking shots of flaming peppermint schnapps (you do it in the dark to see the blue flame) but he was a little too drunk and spilled it on himself instead of down his throat and his clothes caught fire and he spun around and fell off the second floor balcony onto the grass below. Did I mention he was very drunk? He didn't get hurt - probably being so drunk meant he had relaxed muscles or something - and he didn't get much smarter either.
So to be clear this was a flaming peppermint schnapps drinking challenge, not a set yourself on fire with alcohol challenge; that part of it was just an accident.
My initial reaction was to be grateful that my children are in their 30s. Then that thought led me to briefly hope that I don't ever have grandchildren.
Teenagers are as dumb as a post. And they want to have the vote...

I won't say anything about how stupid that was. I don't care how stupid it was. Burns over half her body. I hope she'll be OK somehow.
I was relieved that she was well enough to comment, but I think that's a mistake. The quote in the headline seems to be from a different kid, a 16-year-old in Santa Ana who survived the stunt (article linked within this one).
Richard Feynman would light his hands on fire as a kid doing magic shows, but it was just his hands. He soaked them in cold, cold water first, then dipped them quickly in petroleum ether, then "accidentally" brushed past a flame. The hydrocarbon stayed on the outside of the water layer, and the water evaporating kept him from being burned (until he grew hairs that acted as wicks). Right on the stupid/very-clever borderline - and still dangerous as hell.

When I was in elementary school, we were all taught to "stop, drop, and roll" in case of being engulfed in flames. I always found it such an odd safety tip. Were children actually finding themselves were "stop, drop, and roll" would come in handy? Apparently, yes.
The STUPID (in action): It BURNS.
Question: Does Facebook, Twitter, YouTube (Google) block these internet challenges to protect their users? Because if you were wanting to protect users by censoring certain things, this seems like a good candidate.
There was one I saw recently where an idiot bathed himself in a tub of concentrated bleach. He had even tested it on a small patch of skin and learned that the burn was serious 2nd degree within just a few seconds, and yet in he went and then to the hospital with what were certainly going to be life altering scarring over his entire body.
Are Planned babies sedated before they are scalped and disassembled into their constituent organs and clumps of cells?
When I worked at University of Michigan hospital, there were a couple of times I did overtime shifts in the burn unit.
Seeing a man who was so horrifically burned that no sheets or bandages could be placed on what was left of his naked quadruple amputated body that was all bloated up like a balloon is something I still remember 30 years later.
Next up: setting yourself on fire while eating Tide pods.

I understand the girl forgetting to stop, drop, and roll, but it's unforgivable of the parents. Pulling her clothes off with their bare hands? They were in their bedroom, they could have smothered the fire with blankets.
Stupid people die doing stupid things. She lived. So she'll probably reproduce. I can only imagine what antics her children will be up to with concentrated stupidity.
