"Something Wonderful: Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Broadway Revolution" and "Elia Kazan: A Biography."

Books Harvey Weinstein carried to his arraignment, reported in The Daily Beast.
Could he have imagined that he would be allowed to carry the books through his booking? Did the mogul picture himself sitting around reading during the brief time before he was released on prearranged bail? Was he at all surprised that he only got as far as the front desk with them?

“Get rid of them now,” a lieutenant commanded.... “I’m guessing those books were placed by some consultant,” the lieutenant said. “Why wouldn’t you leave in the car what you wouldn’t be allowed to take? I’m sure it was some stylist.”
If you were "styling" the movie mogul for his rape arraignment, what 2 books would you put in his hands? "Something Wonderful: Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Broadway Revolution" and "Elia Kazan: A Biography"???

I'd assume he was anticipating downtime and didn't want to be bored. 2 books (actually, there was a third, unnamed, book) is way more reading than makes any sense. So maybe he was trying to send a message. If so, the message is: I love show business.

Dear Criminals,

This is why you need to do your dirt in California and other such places. NYPD don't play that. NYPD will fuck up your shit.

And what the hell is the lieutenant doing blabbing about internal police procedures?

Weinstein needs to hire as his lawyer Brendan Sullivan, famous for telling the Iran-Contra Committee, "I'm not a potted plant." Weinstein shouldn't be anywhere close to a potted plant.

That doesn't describe real cops. It describes unprofessional bad cops.

Good cops don't fuck up your shit. Nor do they fuck around with the media. Good cops just do their job.

Something Wonderful lyrics

Thiang

This is a man who thinks with his heart,
His heart is not always wise.
This is a man who stumbles and falls,
But this is a man who tries.
This is a man you'll forgive and forgive,
And help protect, as long as you live...
He will not always say
What you would have him say,
But now and then he'll do
Something Wonderful.
He has a thousand dreams
That won't come true,
You know that he believes in them
And that's enough for you.
You'll always go along,
Defend him where he's wrong
And tell him, when he's strong
He is Wonderful
He'll always need your love
And so he'll get your love-
A man who needs your love
Can be Wonderful.

Thiang

She'll always go along
Defend him when he's wrong
And tell him when he's strong
He is wonderful.
He'll always need her love
And so he'll get her love
A man who needs your love
Can be wonderful.

Re Elia Kazan - he will name names, is the message as interpreted pretty widely.

He could have done like Clinton during the Lewinsky scandal, and appeared between two holy men and carrying a Bible. A scene straight out of Shakespeare's "Richard III"...

I’m reading “Something Wonderful” at the moment. It is a fascinating book. Harvey is no Hammerstein.

Perhaps Weinstein has a lot of stories to tell and names to be named. Given his known associations, the stories and names do not concern Republicans.

Lolita would have been an appropriate choice.

He had no real idea of what to do, not having been arrested before. His lawyer said he wouldn't have to wait - unless something went wrong. He'd be out at once - unless something went wrong. He wouldn't be locked up - unless something went wrong. "Take some books, it'll give reporters something to focus on." "What books? Why not Kindle. I'll have my phone." "Do not touch your phone, look at the police or they'll hold you overnight." "What?" "Listen to me, I'll save you, but you gotta do what I say." And so Harvey begins his slow slide out of life into a gray intricate nothingness. I'd feel sorry but he was physically brutal to young women who just wanted to sing and dance and act and entertain and who had no real idea of how badly life - or the Hollywood version thereof - can treat you. He's the way they found out. Falling into the legal system is Harvey's punishment.

Why not two books?

I'm always reading at least 2-3 books at any given time. When I get tired of one, I'll read the other.

Normally one on my tablet and 1 on my phone. The time I had jury duty a couple years back I took two books with me since I figured I'd be there for 8 hours or so.

I love the Hollywood reporter on this.

But late, in the Hollywood blacklist era, he was called before the House Committee on Un-American Activities in 1952 and became a cooperative witness by naming names, he also became a pariah in liberal circles.

No parenthetical comment that it was the Hollywood Reporter that was singlehandedly responsible for the blacklist.

Oh, well, I guess we should at least be grateful they didn't drag McCarthy into the mix.

If I anticipate waiting time, I'll take a book. But often I find that I'm not in the mood for that book. So, it's not unusual for me to toss two or three books into my satchel to increase the odds of having one I feel like reading at the moment. I'm likely to have a philosophy book, a book for working on a foreign language, and maybe a novel.

Narayanan said...

So he is saying I never bothered to read these before.
Kazan named communists ... He himself was patriot. Harvey naming other abusers is not a parallel analogy in a sane culture.

Narayanan said...

If it's a threat, maybe he also has inside track on NY system corruption.

I often bring three books if I have to wait somewhere for an hour or so. Selection.

Freeman Hunt said...

If I'm only bringing one, it has to be one I'm always in the mood for. One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich was in my purse for a long time for that purpose.

Stop drinking turpentine and learn to read. Nobody hurt him. They interrupted his clowning with book covers and had him compose himself. If you want police brutality try LAPD. NYPD, as you say, just gets the job done without fear or favor of kowtowing to bigwigs. You will notice that he was not arrested in LA, though obviously most of his predation occurred there.

My Kindle, which is in the house and used mostly in bed, has 150 books on it. I have about 24 audio books in the car. We are still listening to the end of Max Boot's biography of Lansdale.

"Sleepwalkers" is on the back patio and another book (two actually) are in the living room.

Normally, I would not carry any books with me but I supposed, correctly as it turned out, that I would not be able to read on my phone in the jury waiting room. Which was actually a courtroom.

I always have my phone with me and 50-100 books on it. If it looks like it is going to be a while, like on a plane or a doctor visit, I have my tablet too. Also 50-100 books on it at any given time.

Probably 100-200 downloaded samples on each as well. Anytime someone mentions a book that might be interesting I immediately download the sample. Sometimes whie they are telling me about it.

Sometimes I read it right away, sometimes not for a while. If the sample seems interesting, I leave it on my phone/tablet and may eventually buy it when I am ready to read it.

This way of "discovering" new books to read with Kindle is one of the things I most like about it. No trying to remember a book til I can get to a bookstore. No poking around the store trying to find something interesting. No paying $20 for a book to find out in the first chapter that it is dreck. No listening to my wife complain about clutter.

If I am taking a book-book for a long wait, I want something I have read before that I know will not disappoint. To the jury room I took an Elmore Leonard novel that I figured I would read in 2-3 hours. As a backup I took a history or biography that would take me a while.

I have a collected works of Joseph Conrad on my devices at all times for just this reason. I can pretty much dip into it at random and it'll be something I'm in the mood for.

I've read them all so many times over the years, I can dip in at the middle of a novel as in the beginning.

He is far and away at his best writing about the sea. His shore based tales I find a bit boring.

Not sure what you mean, Walter.

I probably have 5-600 books in my Kindle library. I just don't keep them all on my phone since they are accessible in seconds anywhere in the world.

Not counting samples.

One of the things I learned from hurricane Maria, where it was 4-5 weeks before I got even poor and limited cellular service and longer for wi-fi is to download a LOT of books before the storm. And podcasts and audio books.

Not much else to do in those days than read and I ran out at one point.

3 more books for Weinstein to display: Papillon, I'm Ok- You're Ok, To Kill A Mockingbird.

These three are probably better for Harvey to flaunt: Think Big and Kick Ass, The America We Deserve, and Time To Get Tough!

The Rodgers & Hammerstein book seems an apt choice for Harv, given Rodgers's rep as a seducer of chorus girls.

I wanted to vote against Cyrus Vance. He's the Manhattan DA who gave Harvey a pass the first time around. Cyrus was the only name on the ballot. It was impossible to vote against him.....Harvey is now a very public figure. Justice will probably be done, but, after all these years, can you really call it justice?......Maybe it was just the look that Harvey was going for. When you're carrying a pile of books, you look scholarly and non-threatening. People don't think of bookish men as rapists.
