Roy Moore won't go away.

He's filed a complaint in the Circuit Court of Montgomery, Alabama and is trying to stop the certification of the election results (which is supposed to happen today). Moore wants a new special election, CNN reports.

Alleging voter fraud, Moore says that out-of-state residents voted and that there was an "anomalous" turnout in Jefferson County (which is 43% black and had a 47% turnout).

Moore lost by 21,311 votes, in case you're wondering how many bad votes he'd need to locate. Imagine a new special election! Who benefits from Roy Moore staying in the news? I'd say: Democrats.

UPDATE: Maybe now he's gone away:

I agree the election is a done deal. And this circus might help the democrats, unless Moore can find significant voter fraud. Which might not be that hard.

Pretty funny that the guy who ran an ad about the very fine people on both sides of the Civil War won on the strength of black votes.

Derbyshire likes him as a representative of old weird America.

I have a very low opinion of this guy even putting aside the sex and creep allegations of 40 years ago. He twice defied federal court orders and was twice removed from the Alabama Supreme Court.

Loose cannon with poor judgment. Screwball.

Henry म्हणाले...

I assume that Moore is going to run for something in Alabama next, and believes himself well served by staying in the news and keeping his supporters agitated. Moore will always help the Democrats, on the national level and Moore cares not a whit.

He may be a fool but he's our fool
If they think they're better than him they're wrong

Jaq म्हणाले...

It's all based on a TV interview with a guy who was celebrating the victory and grateful for all of the people who came in from out of state and voted. It is like 2000 when a poll of Marquette, I think, students turned up enough admissions of illegal votes on that campus alone to swing the state to Gore.

Chuck म्हणाले...

It's an embarrassment, and counter-productive to the serious election law reform movement on the right led by people like Kris Kobach and Hans von Spakovsky.

I see that Moore took a polygraph and claims he passed. It would be interesting to see the report and carefully review what he was asked. My understanding is that some of Moore's accusers have volunteered to submit to polygraphs as well.

Of course none of it affords any legal basis to block certification of the election results.

अनामित म्हणाले...

This is why I rolled my eyes at the people who thought this was some kind of catastrophic loss. "OMG! A Dem won Alabama!" Moore is an asshole; still shooting for albatross status long after he should have shut up and gone home.

Polygraphy is pseudo-science. It's appalling that it's still in use anywhere.

If there is a new special election it is because of massive Democratic voter fraud. So no, not the Democrats.

So some random guy misspeaks in a television interview (there was a lot of assistance from out of the state but absolutely no evidence of people from out of state voting) and that is evidence of fraud? Laughable.

MacMacConnell म्हणाले...

Moore won't be seated as a Senator, he won't find enough fraudulent votes to over turn the election. But, if he finds a significant number it will be politically beneficial to Kobach's and the Republican efforts at securing elections.

I would not be surprised if there is significant voter fraud, but would be surprised if the election was overturned.

No, it's not.

"The campaign claimed three national election integrity experts all concluded "with a seasonable degree of statistical and mathematical certainty...election fraud occurred." The experts said the irregularities in the 20 Jefferson County precincts alone are enough to reverse the outcome of the election, the campaign said.

Each expert filed affidavits in the complaint filed Wednesday.

One of the three experts, Richard Charnin, said the possibility of the election results in the Jefferson County precincts happening naturally is "less than one in 15 billion," according to the campaign."

Of course you post that crap and it's inevitable that some moron lefty will pick it up and run. And here he is:

Same old crap.

When the Democrats lose, its NEVER Over. We get lawsuits, accusations of fraud and voter intimidation and things drag on and on until someone "finds" some ballots or the SCOTUS rules 7-2 against them.

When the Republicans lose, all the loser "Moderates" race out to see who can be first to concede and give the Democrat a slap on the back and a hearty "well done". 'Cause that's what they're all about - losing gracefully.

I hope Moore keeps fighting. 95% of the people saying he's "Hurting the Republicans" didn't support Trump in 2016. Y'know who's "hurting Republicans"? Doug Jones, the D from Alabama. Who will give Chuck Shumer his 49th vote on EVERYTHING. Thanks Trump, McConnell, and Nevertrumpers. Heck of Job!

cubanbob म्हणाले...

If a fair amount of fraud is found, then what? At the minimum not only does that make voter ID a must it also calls into question early voting, absentee voting and same day registration and voting. Moore is problematic, even for Alabama, but if fraud is involved to a large degree then the Democrat should have the decency to resign and allow yet another election or if AL law permits the governor to pick the replacement.

Note to Althouse; as 2017 comes to a close, observe that you've managed to attract some Roy Moore/fraud conspiracy fans. And it certainly isn't because you've ever expressed any support of Moore. And Luther Strange lost to this a—hole? I have been commenting that Steve Bannon needs to learn how to vet a candidate, but maybe the Republican professional politicians in DC need to learn how to vet candidates too.

And if the woman who claimed Moore molested her as a 14 year old in 1979 and the woman who produced the doctored yearbook to “prove” Moore attempted to rape her turn out to have been lying then they need long stretches in prison to contemplate the error of their ways. Thirty years without parole should be about right.

Big Mike म्हणाले...

@Curious George, you must be mistaken. I have been advised that douche bags perform a useful function. There is nothing about Chuck that is useful.

Or it could be people who are disgusted with the MSM and GOP Establishment who see themselves as elites and the moral arbiters of our nation while wallowing in sin and corruption.

Mike Sylwester म्हणाले...

The US Senate should investigate the apparent fraud committed by Beverly Young Nelson, which was aided and abetted by Gloria Allred.

Instead of investigating accusations of sexual harrassment that allegedly happened 40 years ago, the US Senate should investigate frauds committed to affect current elections to fill seats in the US Senate.

A little more than a year ago, Allred's daughter Lisa Bloom offered large amounts of money to women so that they would make sexual-harrassment accusations against the Republican presidential candidate.

It's quite plausible that Allred likewise offered a large amount of money to Nelson.

The US Senate should study Allred's and Nelson's associates, bank accounts and telephone records. Both women should be questioned under oath.

Karen of Texas म्हणाले...

Mike Sylwester म्हणाले...

The US Senate should also subject Nelson's yearbook to forensic analysis.

Democratic senators will reflexively oppose an investigation of Nelson's sexual-harassment accusation, but fraudulent accusations can be made just as easily against Democratic senators.

Investigating frauds that intend to affect elections for seats in the US Senate should be a bipartisan policy.

Jones prosecuted the 16th Street church bombing by members of the KKK. It shouldn't be a surprise that blacks turned out to vote for him.

Multiple towns with thousands more votes than registered voters.
Sure. The Democrats should be able to get away with vote fraud. Voters from other States should have a say in the Resistance. Everyone in Europe should be able to vote in our next National election, too. Moore should lie back and take it because the elite hate him.

n.n म्हणाले...

Democrats are still hunting babies in the fourth trimester, and everyone knows that babies deemed unworthy are not viable. So, the collusion of the left and press in a witch hunt to influence an election is a credible violation of civil rights and democratic integrity. Moore should expose the witch hunters, and the baby hunters, too, if only to ensure that civil rights and democracy does not die at the twilight fringe (a.k.a. penumbra).

Bay Area Guy म्हणाले...

Yes, we probably do want Moore to (politically) fade away.

But, lets answer the question, without dismissing it: Is there evidence of voter fraud or not?

John henry म्हणाले...

It aint over til we win, right?

We still have people trying to overturn President Trump's election on more and more spurious grounds. We need to do the same thing.

No more rolling over and playing dead.

Having said that, if I were in Alabama and especially if I were black I probably would have voted for Jones. Just one reason:

Even 30 years later he would not forget the horrific church bombing in Birmingham. He went after the culprits and got convictions.

He is a hero in my book.

PS-We should remember that Alabama was solid demmy at that time. It was the demmies who didn't pursue these monsters. It was the demmies who sicced the dogs on peaceful demonstrators and worse. Notwithstanding Jones, that needs to be pointed out every chance we get.

Folks here are probably tired of hearing me say this but why do you put up with a election system as is common in the upper 50? SO corrupt that there are common jokes ("vote early and often", "Shady Elms cemetery cast 500 ballots" and so on). SO corrupt that the jokes don't even upset anyone. So corrupt that no investigation is needed, just accept it and move on.

Even here, nobody reacts in horror to the first comment: Chicago rules - they find ballots in a car, you find em in a dump truck!

Early and absentee voting, same day registration, motor voter, no ID. We have none of those here in the deep south (Puerto Rico). (We do have very limited absentee ballot access. Probably less than 1% of ballots cast)

We also have the highest rate of voting in the US. Our turnout, as a percentage of eligible population, is higher than pretty much every state's turnout of registered population. Even considering that polls are only open for 4 hours, even considering that you have to have a voter ID card issued by the state election committee.

I was in Chicago on election day last year. I understand that I could have registered that Tuesday morning using my hotel address and voted for Mr Trump and it would have been legal. Since I was not in PR on election day I was unable to vote locally.

We may have the world's shittiest politicians like the current "Prince of Darkness" but we get them honestly. In 47 years here I've never heard an election joke of the type John M made.

We trust our elections, if not our politicians.

How many of you can say the same?

John Henry

Big Mike म्हणाले...

@John Henry, none of them care.

John henry म्हणाले...

It used to be even stricter. Up to the 76 election, polling places were closed. You showed up at your assigned school and were assigned to a classroom. At 2PM the doors to the classrooms all across the island were closed. You stayed in the room until all 30-40 people had voted.

Late? Tough shit. No vote for you, better luck next time.

I am 6'2" and was assigned to an elementary school classroom so no seat for me.

John Henry

John henry म्हणाले...

That included the 76 election.

From 80 on polls are open for 4 hours and you walk in, show your finger, get it dipped in ink, show your ID card, get your name checked against the list and then mark 3 paper ballots: Gov, Senate/house and city and drop them in a locked urn.

A Hawaiian judge, and progressive others, also ruled against the President to prevent enforcing civil rights, and, ostensibly, to enable social justice adventures (e.g. elective regime changes), refugee crises (e.g. trail of tears), and immigration reform.

A transgender judge ruled against the democratic will of the people, including mostly Democrats, in California, in order to promote the precedent of political congruence (i.e. selective exclusion), a subset of the Pro-Choice religion.

The judge today rules for trials by press (e.g. bullhorn prosecutions), denying due process, political lynching, and abrogation of civil rights through collusion of politics, press, and special interests. They are still ruling on Obama spying on American citizens, including the Republican candidate, in Water Closet that was exposed by Deep Plunger. And on Obama/Clinton/DNC/Press collusion with domestic and foreign intelligence assets and sovereign state (Kiev) in order to influence the presidential election and disenfranchise American citizens. Even now, in the fourth trimester following inauguration, they are carrying out baby hunts in order to abort the person they deemed nonviable.

So, witch hunts, public lynchings, and political myths seem to be the rule of the day. I suppose there is precedent.
