At the Bittersweet Café...
... you can talk about whatever you want.
And shop all you want through the Althouse Amazon Portal.
Meade brought that bittersweet home, after helping a neighbor do some pruning. I clipped it into shape and got it into the vase, which was weirdly hard to do. Bittersweet gets entwined with itself, and the orange berries fall off if you try to disentangle it, get rid of the empty sticks, and coax things into an upright posture.

Truer words were never spoken.
John Conyers' attorney, Arnold Reed:
"There are to my count five of these allegations against Al Franken. There are four — three or four — against the congressman. At the end of the day, I would suspect that Nancy Pelosi is going to have to explain what is the discernable difference between Al Franken and John Conyers. That is a question that she is going to have to answer. And again, he is not going to be pressured by Nancy Pelosi or anyone else to step down. That decision will be made by Congressman Conyers as to what his next course is. That will not be today, that will not be tomorrow."

I happened to run into this while grazing on the net. World War Two female Spitfire pilot dies, aged 94 She was still as spunky at 94 as she appears in her RAF uniform.

Tiger Woods is back on the professional golf tour. He's not doing too bad for being out of the game for so long. Good thing that he golfed with the POTUS Donald Trump the other day, and listened to Trump's advice and golf tips. Winning. It affects everyone willing to listen.
"Geraldo Rivera groped Bette Midler in bathroom."
Was that when she was singing in the gay bath house with Barry Manilow as her accompanist?

Very slow and lots of errors. I usually attribute this to Comcast but it seems to be Blogger.
It’s Blogger. Instapundit and Hot Air work fine.
We should have a "grope free" Friday tomorrow, where we only discuss happy things: beer, wine, college football, walks in the park, jazz music, skiing in Tahoe, renting a speed boat in San Diego, sunsets of San Francisco, attractive women with nice smiles, reading good books by a warm fireplace at night -- that kinda stuff.
I’ve been having a lot of trouble with Blogger.
I'm not sure what happened earlier, but now things are ok. Did you wipe the server down with a cloth or something?

I mean anybody who says that they are equivalent.

A cost-benefits analysis of whether it is better to attack North Korea now or continue the policy of deterrence. Author is a research fellow at the "Systemic Risk Centre" at the London School of Economics.
"Given these assumptions, a war in 2018 will cause 1.4 million Japanese-South Korean-U.S. deaths (25 weapons (20 kt) * 50% chance of successful detonation * 112,000 deaths per successful detonation). The number of deaths resulting from war will increase by 1.1 million per year (4 additional weapons (250 kt) * 50% chance of a successful detonation * 546 deaths per successful detonation). It follows that a war in 2019 will cause expected deaths of 2.5 million, a war in 2020 will cause expected deaths of 3.6 million, and so on. A war in 2048 will cause expected deaths of 34.2 million."
You have got to think that all these numbers have been run over and over by teams in the Pentagon.

Does anyone remember the recent kerfuffle over Sarah Sanders' chocolate pecan pie? According to a tweet linked to by Glenn Reynolds, April Ryan -- the sweet lady from MSNBC who made the claim on zero point zero zero evidence that Sanders had not backed said pie -- has not received an invitation to the White House Christmas Party. “I don’t think I was overlooked,” she said. “I think they don’t like me. For whatever reason, they have disdain for me.” Well, April, it occurs to me that they might overlook your assertion that Sanders did not bake the pie, but when you later said you would not take a bite of said pie because "you guys don’t like the press," that was maybe a bridge too far.

The reason that it is so easy for Dems to jettison Conyers is because he's now an embarrassment to their party. Conyers is senile; or crazy; or both. His seat is as safe a seat for Dems as there is in the House.
When the liberal, aggressively progressive Deatroit Free Press calls on Conyers to resign (indeed was one of the first entities to do so), you know it is all over.
Under Article I, Conyers' seat will be put up for a special election. Michigan's Republican governor won't appoint a Republican to hold it until a special election. And so a Democrat will take it again. And all that the Democrats lose is a potentially large embarrassment. The whole Conyers Enterprise, from the felon wife, to the not-ready-for-prime-time staff and entourage, to the Congressman himself (who quit doing interviews a long time ago for fear of his embarrassing himself as he did when he wandered out of a campaign meeting with the Freep Editorial Board).
Disappearing for 2-3 weeks back at the height of the crack epidemic in the 80's; being picked up by Detroit Police with no pants in the median of Livernois Avenue during an off-year campaign for mayor; sitting in his federal building office while his wife was sentenced to federal prison two floors below; a hundred other bizarre statements to journalists or in Congressional hearings... it is all vintage Conyers.
They have been trying to leverage Conyers out of the Judiciary Committee leadership for more than a year. I still believe that it was Dems who outed this story. It was in their interest to do it. At least some of them.
Republicans could learn a valuable lesson in this; to cut ties with the outlier members of the party against whom credible allegations have been made.

Pro-Choice. I wonder who will be selected.
Does the unholy collusion of male and female chauvinists offer greater leverage than color diversity?
The problem Chuck, is that Republicans lose a Senate seat, where the Democrats lose nothing getting rid of both. When it mattered, the Democrats have shown no such integrity in the past, and if the situation comes up in the future where it would cost them, they will change the rules again. I don't like Moore, I haven't liked him since I first heard of him and he flashed a gun on stage. But that's a pretty low cost move by them, and looks pretty racist if they don't dump Franken too.
Both Franken and Conyers, like Clinton, abused their public office.

Bitcoin reminds me of the Dutch search for arbitrarily highly valued sequences of DNA in tulip bulbs, except they called them breeders, not miners.
cut ties with the outlier members of the party against whom credible allegations
Will Republicans deny due process (a la abortionists, class diversitists)?
Will they submit to a lower standard of jurisprudence including trial by press (i.e. bullhorn prosecutions), and a lower standard of evidence including a preponderance of allegations?
Does avoiding social liberalism and potentially licentious behavior (e.g. trans-social) in the course of courtship count as progress?
Are Republicans Pro-Choice?

The problem was in the Alabama primary. Where the assclown Bannon put this guy up, despite Republicans having a good candidate who'd have won easily in the general. Bannon and all the shit heads who voted for Moore. That is the problem. And we wouldn't have this problem if Luther Strange was running as the Republican nominee in the special.
Even if someone were to agree with the importance of the Alabama Senate seat, the fact remains that this is a problem because of the support for Moore in the primary. It will be a problem, just as you describe, if Moore loses; and it will remain a problem if Moore wins.
btw; in a case more like John Conyers than Roy Moore, it looks like Republican Congressman Joe Barton (TX-6) won't seek re-election.

Unexpectedly.
"Bowe Bergdahl Republican" Chuck: "btw; in a case more like John Conyers than Roy Moore, it looks like Republican Congressman Joe Barton (TX-6) won't seek re-election."
Well, who could have guessed that?!
Joe Bartons case is utterly different from that of John Conyers. Not even in the same universe.
But the democrat/lefty narrative/meme is that Joe Barton, who is a potential victim of revenge porn by mature women with whom he had consensual relations, is actually worse than a serial (over decades) sexual abuser of women.
Once again, LLR Chuck has "accidentally" aligned with the false lefty talking points of the day!
Wow.

Try not to be stupid. Did Herman Cain sue anybody ? No, they disappeared as soon as he dropped out.
Hit jobs are deniable once the election is over. Public figures and all that.
I mentioned previously that, in a roundabout way, the appearance of the Acid Kid caused 'Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds' to be played on the jukebox. It really was a roundabout way, although -- in retrospect -- it pretty much just seems A to B. But back to the song: this brought forth a discussion amongst the regulars about a particular claim of trivia: did John Lennon really not intend the song title as a reference to LSD?
The story is that his son Julian made a picture. When asked what the picture was of, he replied his schoolmate Lucy. And she was in the sky. With diamonds. John Lennon claimed he didn't notice the acronym formed by the major words. A lot of the argument at the bar can be boiled down to: of course he knew.
Lennon took LSD. Lennon was clever. Lennon liked to tweak noses. Of those he believed needed their noses tweaked. Again: of course he knew.
So I took the other argument. Because I like to do that. I pointed out that McCartney confirmed the painting story. Which led to a side argument on the merits of Paul McCartney. 'Silly Love Songs' was mentioned. John and Paul: people still feel compelled to pick one and denigrate the other. People did that with John and Yoko, too, but that pretty much went one way; not many people on the other side of the fence on that one.
I then pointed out that Ringo confirmed it: Ringo was there when Lennon's son Julian first said the name of the drawing. There are grumbles: everyone has an affection for Ringo. 'With a Little Help From My Friends' gets played on the jukebox occasionally. But it usually is the Joe Cocker version. But even then: Ringo, in spirit.
Finally, I point out that Julian confirms the story, and that they have even tracked down the girl from school, Lucy, who remembers painting with Julian. The only way to believe Lennon lied about the LSD reference is to believe all of those people are part of a conspiracy.
So: those at the bar then basically said that all of those people were part of a conspiracy. In so many words. Basically.
Because when you want the story to be true then it is true regardless of the truth; few people will be convinced otherwise. Paul is Dead Man, Miss Him Miss Him.
Conspiracy theories are great bar fodder. For instance: the JFK assassination is always good for a few hours. And that's just debating whether Oswald really was a Communist.

I have lived in about 12 different locations in eight states and Madison, with its 30 square miles surrounded by reality, is by far my favorite. But the economics of Wisconsin taxes drove me away. Indiana is almost as nice but the Madison culture, its atmosphere and its people are hard to replace.
Property tax rates in Indiana are half that of Dane County and the homestead exemption does wonders to the tax bill. Maximum state income tax rates in Indiana are also far below Wisconsin as well. Top that off with very reasonably priced housing and I am content becoming a Hoosier, for 25 years now.

The Steinle trial was a terrible thing.
On so many levels I would hate to be her parents.
Least of all, of course, is this thing. But still, there it is. This verdict, on top of their treatment by the authorities, is a tremendous personal insult. The perpetrator is a worthless character, he might as well be an infected dog, there is no point in vengeance against him. But the insults must be answered.
I am a more fiery (and less Christian) fellow than the Steinle's, and the desire for vengeance would eat at me.
Yes we are not seek vengeance, but properly enforce the law

Tonight is a good example of why predicting politics a year out is a fool's game.
But this is not the law in question, but the ongoing personal insult offered by the servants of the people, to which the family has implicitly ceded the right of vengeance.
Their constant bland, pedantic slovenliness is a blow. Blow after blow after blow.
They have created the need for yet anothet level of vengeance.

Steinle's killer said he picked up something not knowing it was a gun. Then it went off accidentally in her direction.
So how does the verdict make sense? If you believe him, why is he guilty of a gun charge? If you don’t believe him, why isn’t he guilty of at least manslaughter? The only way it makes sense is as, yeah he did it so we'll give him a slap on the wrist to spite Trump. That's incredibly serious. Society will not long survive that kind of thing.
If people want to make a case to vote for Moore to keep an abortion-lover out of the senate, fine. But don't pat yourself on the back when you leave the voting booth. Fall on your knees and beg God for mercy that you chose evil, lesser or not.

Ah..says tons.
Kate Steinle was shot three-four blocks from my office.
I often go to the pier she was on to take photos. Have done so for 22 years now.
She is important politically for many reasons, but the most significant is that this event was the result of a long chain of official failures, incompetence or fatuous politics by multiple government entities, any of which could have and should have prevented it.
Trump got a lot of traction from this. It was clear that the government he was attacking was truly not fit for purpose.

When did that start? I can recall you defending Hillary with absolute certainty without the benefit of any links and refusing to follow links to the New York Times, Wa Pa, Christian Science Monitor, Politico, etc, etc, etc,

It's very simple Tim.
Back when he was posting as Shiloh I busted him by referring to his jabber as, well, jabber. So he sought to take the power out of that word, or to seize upon its power, by using it himself ten thousand times a day. Kind of like the queers reclaiming queer. Just more leftist claptrap agitprop Alinsky technique.
