At the Cool Blue Café...
... you can talk about whatever you want.
That photo shows Lake Mendota at about 8 a.m. this morning (when I took my long walk to avoid the heat).
Please consider shopping through The Althouse Amazon Portal.

Consortium News has published an article titled "More Holes in Russia-gate Narrative". The authors are:
* William Binney, who worked for NSA for 36 years, retiring in 2001 as the technical director of world military and geopolitical analysis and reporting.
* Ray McGovern, who worked as a CIA analyst for 27 years.
The authors report that they are continuing to test the possibility that data could have been downloaded through the Internet at a speed of 22.7 megabytes per second.
[quote]
Over the last few weeks, we ran three tests to determine how quickly data could be exfiltrated from the U.S. across the Atlantic to Europe.
– First, we used a 100 megabits-per-second (mbps) line to pull data from a one-gigabyte file to Amsterdam. The peak transfer speed was .8 MBps.
– Second, we used a commercial DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) to send the same one-gigabyte file to a commercial DSL in Amsterdam. The peak transfer speed was 1.8 MBps.
– Third, we pushed the same one-gigabyte file from a data center in New Jersey to a data center in the UK. The peak transfer speed was 12 MBps.
None of these attempts achieve anything close to the average rate of 22.7 megabytes per second evident in the July 5, 2016 download/copy associated with the DNC. In fact, this happens to be the speed typical of a transfer to a USB-2 external storage device. We do not think this pure coincidence; rather, it is additional evidence of a local download.
We are preparing further trans-Atlantic testing over the next few weeks.

The authors respond to computer experts who have suggested an alternative method.
[quote]
Some researchers have noted that some partitioning of the data might have occurred in the U.S., allowing for a transfer to be made at the measured speed over the Internet, and that this could have made possible a hack from the other side of the Atlantic. One of our associate investigators has found a way to achieve this kind of data partitioning and later transfer.
In theory, this would be one possible way to achieve such a large-data transfer, but we have no evidence that anything like this actually occurred.
More important, in such a scenario, the National Security Agency would have chapter and verse on it, because such a hack would have to include software to execute the partitioning and subsequent data transfer. NSA gives the highest priority to collection on “execution software.”

I don't know why Sessions has kept a lid on the FBI.
Even Andy McCarthy, in spite of his NeverTrump credentials, is starting to write about the abuses by Mueller.
I'm thinking the government is corrupt from one end to the other.
In contrast to these NFL babies who sit for the National Anthem, last week at the Cal-Mississippi game, the Cal Marching Band did a wonderful rendition of "America the Beautiful". Really spectacular - really surprising. Go Bears!
Your government IS corrupt from one end to the other.
I said so from the beginning, that every mans hand would be against Trump. There is no way to reform the system and its residents, they need to be removed and replaced.
Trump, and his voters, have no friends there.
None at all.
"
Trump, and his voters, have no friends there.
None at all."
The same would have been true of Perot but the Deep State was less entrenched then.
The corruption, which seemed to be concentrated in certain agencies, stretches from end to end, and includes the press, which was supposed to be a bulwark.
The last bastion, the internet, is being silenced now.
Just got back from a few days in South Lake Tahoe. It was snowing as we drove there, snowed a bit overnight, and snowed throughout the day yesterday. A wonderful break from a hot summer is to get an immediate winter.
The main batch of hummingbirds left the morning of the 9th for the second year. That is two weeks earlier than in previous years. Starting next week it will be cooler than normal for at least the next ten days says The Weather Underground. The beginning of the much dreaded cooling cycle down to the next "Little Ice Age"?
"Terrifying torrent of water in Puerto Rico after dam fails, forcing 70,000 to evacuate as Hurricane Maria continues to ravage the island."
But the video clip only shows the emergency spillway working; no dam "failure."
Wait till the Oroville dam fails with the incompetent CA state administration that cares more about Jerry's Choo Choo than the water storage system. This is probably going to be another wet winter.
Small Dead Animals - a post (just featuring a young guy's Youtube video) that goes along with the Trump approval question earlier today, as well as other recent themes on this blog.

Oklahoma State and Mississippi State seem to have run into better teams than they expected. And that is so much more entertaining than watching boring NFL teams.
Do you assume that most people who post pictures of every social interaction they have are depressed or excessively neurotic? Do you assume that people who post pictures of every date with their spouses are in bad marriages?
Oh, my! The POPE has just been accused of heresy.
We live in interesting times.
Next I'm going to learn that brown bears do not crap in the tall, green woods.
When a sports team is invited to the White House, all the President wants to do is congratulate them.
He doesn't want to have sex with them.
He doesn't want to convert their religion.
He doesn't want them to convert their political party.
It's a simple photo session, you get to slap each other on the back.
Nothing is going to replace the 10's of millions of dollars the owners give you, as far as your happiness is concerned.
The people who politicize sports should be ostracized by their team, and run out of town. It's not too much to ask to just STFU and play ball...

I assume that people who post excessively about any aspect of their social lives are wildly insecure about same. But on the other hand, I wonder if people who never post about or with their spouses are in bad marriages. I know I didn't, when I was.
It is predictable that one's openness will be abused by others. The only refuge on that is anonymity. Cushions the blow somewhat. Or we could all keep shtum. Personally I enjoy and appreciate people sharing their experiences.
I have not made a secret of who I am since I have participated in various platforms, blogs, USENET groups, etc.
It is interesting how a few people, who always seem to be angry, think it a big deal to go and find some personal stuff, that I don't conceal, and try to use it in a nasty way.
Somehow, they always seem to be on the left.
Anne,
Have you ever driven through Southern Ontario via Detroit and returning by Thunder Bay, or vice versa?
If so, do you have any observations to share with a West Coast Canuck?
Thanks for a stimulating blog,
John
PS: or any comments about interactions with Canadians? Pittsburg Penguins to visit the White House, their captain is Canadian.
