Trump fires Comey!

"President Trump has fired the director of the F.B.I., James B. Comey, over his handling of the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s emails, the White House said on Tuesday."
“While I greatly appreciate you informing me, on three separate occasions, that I am not under investigation, I nevertheless concur with the judgment of the Department of Justice that you are not able to effectively lead the bureau,” Mr. Trump said in a letter dated Tuesday to Mr. Comey.
ADDED: From WaPo:
Shortly before the announcement, the FBI notified Congress by letter that Comey had misstated key findings involving the Hillary Clinton email investigation during testimony last week, but nothing about that issue seemed to suggest it might imperil Comey’s job....

In defending the probe at last week’s hearing, Comey offered seemingly new details to underscore the seriousness of the situation FBI agents faced last fall when they discovered thousands of Clinton aide Huma Abedin’s emails on the computer of her husband, Anthony Weiner.

“Somehow, her emails were being forwarded to Anthony Weiner, including classified information,” Comey said, adding later, “His then-spouse Huma Abedin appears to have had a regular practice of forwarding emails to him for him I think to print out for her so she could then deliver them to the secretary of state.”... At another point in the testimony, Comey said Abedin “forwarded hundreds and thousands of emails, some of which contain classified information.’’

Neither of those statements is accurate, said people close to the investigation.

Then, of course, Comey laid out the case against CLinton, but demurred to recommend prosecution because of mens rea elements that he implied, without any basis, into the criminal statutes to cover for Hillary.

While America should be grateful if his public conduct in any way prevented Hillary from getting elected (highly unlikely), he is clearly incompetent at best and corrupt at worst.

Perhaps you have missed the many times I have said exactly how big government should be. I will refresh your memory:

No matter how the tax code is written, the federal government never collect more than 20.5% of GDP as taxes. The lower bound is 19% if you consider the historical data.

Any government that spends more than 20.5% over a long enough time will be bankrupt. Given the doubling of federal debt under Obama, it is plain that government spending has far outstripped government tax collections. Therefore, as a percentage of GDP, the federal government must be reduced to spending no more than 20% of GDP until the debt obligations of the federal government are controlled.

Failure to regard the upper limit of federal taxation will result, inevitably, in bankruptcy and a reduction in the standard of living of future generations in this country.

This is based not on my strong political preferences, but on my ability to recognize patterns in the data. #Math

"On November 10, we wrote that that Trump’s firing of Comey would be a “a clear bellwether to both the national security and civil libertarian communities that things are going terribly wrong.” At the time we wrote those words, Comey was deeply unpopular with both the Left, which blamed Hillary Clinton’s defeat on his eleventh hour letter to Congress, and the Right, which criticized his decision to recommend that Clinton not be charged over her handling of government emails. Whatever the merit of Comey’s actions during the campaign, the fact that he managed to anger both sides of the political spectrum demonstrated his storied political independence. And that political independence, we argued, would serve as a critical check against any efforts on the part of President Trump to trample the rule of law.

Trump’s clumsy attempt to deny that his own conduct is at issue in the FBI’s inquiry is foolish. Comey testified just the other day that the FBI is “conducting an investigation to understand whether there was any coordination between the Russian efforts and anybody associated with the Trump campaign.” Splitting hairs over whether this does or does not mean that Trump is “under investigation” cannot obscure the fact that Trump just fired someone who is leading an investigation that deals with whether his aides, campaign, and White House staff had improper dealings with adversary foreign intelligence service.

Getting rid of Comey removes the guy who is running the Russia investigation. It removes the guy who can look Congress in the eye and say credibly that the FBI is investigating whether anyone in the Trump orbit was actively working with the Russians. It removes the guy who, in February, reportedly refused the White House’s request to publicly knock down stories about Trump and Russia while congressmen in key positions of investigatory responsibility allegedly complied. It removes the one person of stature (figurative as well as literal) in the government whom everyone knows will--even when he’s wrong--do what he thinks is the right thing and damn the torpedos. It removes, in other words, the essential person for a credible investigation.

It’s a neat trick: stymie the Russia investigation by siding with Hillary Clinton. Put another way, what if you had a Saturday Night Massacre and liberals cheered because they hated Archibald Cox?"

The anti-government militarists are back in charge and here to see that we reduce revenue, bloat the budget for explosive toys, (when not parading them around), cut services, and then expect a different historical result from every time this was done in the past.

The government must return more revenue to them so that they can buy more golden goose egg-laying formula! Billionaires and millionaires are not being sufficiently incentivized by government policy to make more money! Oh no! They are too scared to make money now! If only the government could do something to change this. I know that when the government gives me more of my tax money the first thing I want to do is to make myself richer. Makes total sense. As does the converse: the more of my money that goes to taxation the less interested I become in finding other ways to make more money. Of course.

No offense, but spoken like a true poverty case. It's amazing how many yokels making less than $60 grand annually seem to think they know everything about billionaire psychology.

Note - this was just with a peacetime building program.
The WWI expansion exceeded the RN in count of hulls by 1918 IIRC, though the proper count at the time was of Dreadnaughts.

Because the unemployment rate did not account for the extended reduction in the labor force participation rate. Which, though people like Bernanke worried about it to the point of saying the official unemployment rate was not useful under the circumstances, the press was notably not interested.

I don't give a shit how much we spend or don't spend. I just want:

no more 2008s
no spending more militarily than the next however many countries combined
no gutting of less expensive social services and science - no matter how threatened industries profiting from poison us feel "threatened" by them
no sucking up to billionaires and millionaires from government; they're doing fine enough and don't seem to do more for the economy when they're sucked up to
no pretending that poverty is a choice

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_tax_revenue_to_GDP_ratio

Not to be taken without a grain of salt. Or barrels of salt.

These comparisons are very difficult to do as large parts of either taxation or public spending are difficult to compare.

- Taxation by different levels of government entities. Many of these compare US Federal vs other national, without including US State and local taxation. And its a huge pain to get into details of each country in that way also.

- Semi-official entities with what amount to the power of taxation, such as, say, capital expenditures by US public utilities or the French State-owned Électricité de France. In? Out? What parts are in or out for the sake of comparability? How financed and where is the cost of finance counted?

- Pension schemes. Some are plain taxes, and a government pension without regard to pay-in. There is a vast variety of these things out there. Government? Private? How to compare? How is SS treated?

- Medical care. In Japan for instance this is managed (for those not covered by employers) by local insurance funds that are semi-government entities, that are off-budget, but there is a mandate to pay them. Again, in or out? This is a more difficult mess than pensions.

- And then there are mandates. Lots of governments, the US not the least of them, like to make things happen by mandating expenditures that are off-budget. The US requirement for employee medical insurance for instance is off-budget. But how do you compare the US or Japan vs the UK NHS, that is entirely on-budget?

Etc.

Grand jury subpoenas issued in FBI's Russia investigation

Washington (CNN)Federal prosecutors have issued grand jury subpoenas to associates of former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn seeking business records, as part of the ongoing probe of Russian meddling in last year's election, according to people familiar with the matter. CNN learned of the subpoenas hours before President Donald Trump fired FBI director James Comey.

The subpoenas represent the first sign of a significant escalation of activity in the FBI's broader investigation begun last July into possible ties between Trump campaign associates and Russia.

The subpoenas issued in recent weeks by the US Attorney's Office in Alexandria, Virginia, were received by associates who worked with Flynn on contracts after he was forced out as director of the Defense Intelligence Agency in 2014, according to the people familiar with the investigation.

Robert Kelner, an attorney for Flynn, declined to comment. The US Attorney's Office in Alexandria, the Justice Department and the FBI also declined to comment.

Why don't you try earning some money first before you bludgeon me with the supposed trustworthiness of your interest in how it's used, mkay?

I haven't seen anyone else mention the name, so I will: I'd like to see Trump name David Clarke Director of the FBI.

The press has once again misled you by calling an investigation of Michael Flynn (who may very well have lied in a way that creates criminal culpability -- beyond my scope) an investigation of a Russia interference in the U.S. election, that you then conflate with an investigation of Trump and the entire Trump Administration.

If Michael Flynn lied in a way that subjects him to criminal sanction, we will know in short order. Of course, issuance of grand jury subpoenas of business records does not indicate unlawful behavior.

I suggest you keep your hopes sky high. And hold your breath.

The federal government collects taxes. It does not have revenue. That misnomer illustrates the dishonesty of the Left.

Further, your reliance on income tax data is misplaced. The total tax burden of low income earners, when all tax sources are considered, is much higher than the 3% lie you tell above. Corporate taxes can be quite regressive, as can be many of the other less obvious federal tax collection methods.

You are out of your depth.

Oh wow. So that money becomes "not-money" by virtue of the government collecting and handling it. Neat! Never knew! Nice way to argue pointless semantics. Any other dictionary definitions you want to change? You're a pretty ambitious bottom 50-percenter, aren't you?

Further, your reliance on income tax data is misplaced. The total tax burden of low income earners, when all tax sources are considered, is much higher than the 3% lie you tell above. Corporate taxes can be quite regressive, as can be many of the other less obvious federal tax collection methods.

Oh right. Regressive corporate taxes. Another revenue stream I'm sure you'd like to make even MORE regressive.

You are out of your depth.

And you're out of your debt. Just think of all that money you DON'T have, that the government returning to you, WON'T DO to increase the debt, or to decrease yours.

Stop harassing me. You need to find a rich person who actually WANTS you to kiss his ass. I know you have a lot of pride - very disproportionate to what you make, and you want to feel justified and compensated for that.

But you're barking up the wrong tree here, CATO institute wanna-be.

Soon, very soon, AG Sessions will begin the final Gleichschaltung of our judiciary. After that, Trump can begin unfettered construction of ovens in Idaho for "undesirables" and erecting fenceposts in Wyoming for non-lethal punitive measures. Do I have the Lefty mindset down?

"The idea that Trump fired Comey because he was unfair to Hillary Clinton or set aside DOJ guidelines in a way that was damaging to her is clearly not true. Indeed, it is so transparently nonsensical that putting it forward as a rationale suggests a certain presidential indifference to what anyone thinks.

In criminal trials there are certain actions defendants can take from which judges will tell juries they can infer guilt. In a political context, this is one of those moments. We are now hearing word from White House officials that the White House is stunned at the backlash at Comey’s firing. Didn’t Democrats think he was doing a bad job? We’re even hearing commentators speculate that maybe this may have been a huge miscalculation. The White House didn’t realize how big a deal this was. In the final analysis I think this will be judged a major miscalculation – just not in the sense they mean. Frankly, no one is that naive. It doesn’t wash.

There is only one reasonable conclusion that can be drawn from the decision to fire Comey: that there is grave wrongdoing at the center of the Russia scandal and that it implicates the President. As I write this, I have a difficult time believing that last sentence myself. But sometimes you have to step back from your assumptions and simply look at what the available evidence is telling you. It’s speaking clearly: the only reasonable explanation is that the President has something immense to hide and needs someone in charge of the FBI who he believes is loyal. "

"I am told just moments ago that the President himself has been considering this, been thinking about this for at least a week. Did not necessarily have the rationale when they first started talking about this but then asked the Attorney General and the Deputy Attorney General to look for that rationale and that explanation. And that is what we got this afternoon. The timing of this, of course, so interesting, Erin because the Russian investigation front and center, it is one of the things that aggravates this president more than anything at all."

1. I don't believe that the WH did not know this was going to be a big deal. They are not stupid - as much as TTR would like us to believe they are. They are treating it like what it is - business.

2. Of course the Dems are making a big public noise about this, but you can bet that in private they are saying "it's about time someone nailed that asshole"

3. There will be no special prosecutor. For those who believe the Dem points that Trump will not last. Good luck. I suspect Pence is every bit as tough and committed as Trump so there would be little change even if Trump were ousted.

4. Trump will not lose a minute of sleep over this.

5. Sometimes firing someone is the absolute best thing to do regardless of the pain.

6. Drastically changing what goes on in DC is essentially a war. Didn't Bannon say that at one point? There are going to be casualties and unpleasant moments. Politics is not bean bag.

"If confirmed, the news that a grand jury has been convened and has started issuing subpoenas suggests that the investigation into the Trump camp’s links with Moscow has entered a new phase.

While the Republican majorities in the House and Senate could hold back congressional investigations and a new FBI director to kill off its counter-intelligence investigation, a grand jury is not under Trump’s control. He may not be able to stop the Russian collusion affair from going to court."

Dear corrupt left, go F yourselves म्हणाले...

From ARM's link

Flynn’s people aren’t talking about the subpoenas right now, but this, coupled with the Sally Yates testimony yesterday indicates that there were some serious issues with Flynn.

Of course, the information coming out of the White House indicates that Comey’s firing was for an unrelated issue – check out my colleague streiff’s post on the details here – and it is not really clear when or if these timelines converge. It is very hard, however, to imagine that Trump would so brazenly fire Comey over the subpoenas considering that in his letter to Comey states Comey told him three times he wasn’t under investigation.

That will not stop the Democrats, mind you, who have already decided that this is the Very Worst Thing In The World Part 934.

khesanh0802 म्हणाले...

@ ARM Your headline/link is inaccurate. Here are quotes from the original CNN article referred to in Redstate:

"CNN learned of the subpoenas hours before President Donald Trump fired FBI director James Comey."

"The subpoenas issued in recent weeks by the US Attorney's Office in Alexandria, Virginia,, were received by associates who worked with Flynn on contracts after he was forced out as director of the Defense Intelligence Agency in 2014, according to the people familiar with the investigation."

Not that there's that much difference, but it does change the dramatic emphasis you spun on it.
