The Women's March in Madison.

At the state capitol today:

Women's March, Madison

The photos are all by my son Chris, not me.

Let's close in on the "Forward" statue — often seen in my old pictures of the Wisconsin protests of 2011. Today, it had on a "pussy hat":

Women's March, Madison

I was critiquing a Women's March poster earlier today — one that was way too complicated — and I said: "Keep it simple. Pick one idea and present it clearly." So I was pleased to see this image:

Women's March, Madison

The Fallopian tube is giving the finger. And it's saying "Boy, Bye," which obviously means about the same thing as giving someone the finger — brusque rejection. If you know the  Beyoncé song, "Sorry," it calls to mind the lyric:
Middle fingers up, put them hands high
Wave it in his face, tell him, boy, bye
Tell him, boy, bye, boy, bye, middle fingers up
I ain't thinking 'bout you
I'm reading the placard to mean: Get government out of my uterus. The "boy" is Trump and the sign is warning him away from any impingement on the female body. This is a good, straightforward message, and I agree with it.

I do see 2 problems:

1. One might read the "boy" as an unwanted child, waved "bye" through abortion. That's unfortunately mean and not helpful to the abortion rights cause. Abortion is better presented as the woman's choice about what do with her body, not any hatred toward the unborn.

2. The message Get government out of my uterus is a compelling libertarian message, but the Women's March may be seen as demanding more than the continued protection of reproductive freedom (which Trump does endanger, since he's said he wants a Supreme Court that will overturn Roe v. Wade). Here's a list of the Women's March "unity principles," and it is not a "boy, bye" to the government. It's demanding that the government get very involved in women's bodies:
We do not accept any federal, state or local rollbacks, cuts or restrictions on our ability to access quality reproductive healthcare services, birth control, HIV/AIDS care and prevention, or medically accurate sexuality education. This means open access to safe, legal, affordable abortion and birth control for all people, regardless of income, location or education.
It's more of a "hi" than a "bye" — more of a hi, get in here and never go away. If that's your message, that Fallopian tube ought to be waving furiously.

Further to all the talk about the size if the marches today, does anyone imaging e if t parties were Reese's we'd b seeing comparisons to Nazi marches/rallies, clips of Triumph if the Will intercut with rally clips, etc?

Aw c'mon Althouse, even an abortion absolutists such as you apparently are, who has taught Constitutional law, has to admit that Roe is a terrible decision based on absurd "reasoning" and worse science that in a failed attempt to support the desired outcome. It is embarrassing to say the least.

I thought you were abusing the 14th Amendment to create the "Right" to an abortion now anyway........

There seems to be a great deal of yearning in these marchers as displayed through their posters and signs (here and elsewhere) that Trump acknowledge both that they have a pussy, an important pussy, but most importantly a pussy that he will never, ever be allowed to grab. If any theme unifies this march it is this: my anonymous pussy is now of national importance.

Meanwhile, few if any truly valuable and important women are to be found in this march, because they know their true value, known that it is more than a lonesome pussy, and that this march is not a rational deployment of that holistic female value.

Instead, they're at work in the West Wing, or in close proximity, or hip deep in politics, Democrat or Republican, or industry, or true philanthropy, (or blogging here), not frittering away their true female value.

The other 85%, or at least the progressive portion of that, does the only thing they can do instead: draw national attention to the pussies that apparently far too few have yearned to grab or even acknowledged.

Phil 314 म्हणाले...

"Abortion rates in the United States are at their lowest in 40 years, according to a new report from the Guttmacher Institute. In 2011, the U.S. abortion rate was 16.9 abortions per every 1,000 women aged 15 to 44, the lowest it's been since abortion was legalized in 1973."

This is good right?

Bob Ellison म्हणाले...

I watched a couple of hours of the march, I guess-- mostly the speeches from the stage. A few songs, lots of speeches etc. The engine was mostly heterosexual-white-man-hatred, interspersed with "you are not alone" chants. One woman did a chant on that, something like if you're a woman, or LGBT, or undocumented, then know this: you are not alone. Another speaker said something like we women brought this world into being, and we can bring it back out.

That's nice.

Angela Davis spoke. Madonna blurted, and Alicia Keyes, bespoke and woke, spoke and sang. "This Girl Is on Fire". Yeah, she admitted on NPR last year or so that it was basically an admiration of herself. She tried today to make it into an anthem of womanhood. So womanhood is egotism.

Portraying the misogynistic cliche is not a good way to go, honey.

Phil 314 म्हणाले...

"which Trump does endanger, since he's said he wants a Supreme Court that will overturn Roe v. Wade"

Wouldn't that be true of any Republican who won the highest office?

Dust Bunny Queen म्हणाले...

I am totally confused by this march protest.

What in the WORLD are they protesting against? Trump was a crude horn dog back when he was younger? So??? Who wasn't. Do these people even live in the real world?

Roe vs Wade? Nothing has happened yet. Save your angst for fighting that fight IF or when it happens. Birth Control? Seriously? It is basically free and many want to make it OTC.

What the Hell do they think they are accomplishing other than making themselves look like ridiculous women unable to rationally control themselves or logically discuss their complaints (whatever those actually are). They are embarrassing themselves and other women who don't have the time or energy or money to make these stupid protests. Women who are working, raising families, having lives and just trying to get along.

And....those stupid pussy hats are also an embarrassment. Not only are they from a ridiculously easy stupid pattern that a first grader could make.....they make you look like a pink version of Batman. Batman is a powerful figure who does powerful things. You look like idiots in those retarded hats.

Gahrie म्हणाले...

This is good right?

sure ...but how about these numbers?

The Abortion Surveillance report published by the CDC, for which the latest abortion numbers are for 2011, show there were 76,251 abortions in New York City that year.

For that total, 9,550 abortions were of white babies, which is 12.5% of the total; 35,188 babies were black (46.1% of total); 23,959 were Hispanic (31.4%); and another 7,554 “other” abortions, 9.9%, which includes Asians and Native Americans, as well as those babies not reported by race.

Abortions of black and Hispanic babies combined totaled 59,147 – that is 77.56% of the total abortions in NYC.

Blacks, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, make up 25.5% of the population of New York City, and Hispanics comprise 28.6% of the NYC population. Despite those population percentages, blacks make up 46.1% of the abortions, and Hispanics, 31.4%.

While whites comprise 44% of the NYC population, they made up 12.5% of total abortions in that city.

That total for one city, 76,251 babies killed, surpasses the number of abortions of any state reporting, according to the CDC.

In 2012, black women in New York City aborted over 6,500 more children than they gave birth to. Data from the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene shows that, among non-hispanic black women, there were 31,328 “induced terminations” to 24,758 live births

Somewhere, Margaret Sanger is smiling.......

Where've you been, Althouse? Hatred towards the unborn is precisely what 21st century abortion is all about. A woman's choice is what Roe was all about. The abortion movement has evolved. Or devolved, perhaps.

As Y'all know, I am top consultant - everyone wants me to give them advice, so that they win! I was attending the March in DC as part of my consultancy. Well, it was packed but very little diversity - in terms of color, speakers, geographic region of participants, etc. Most people were highly educated coastal folks who voted for the Queen HRC. Most speakers talked about how black women did the right thing (by voting for HRC) and how they are also marching for the women who voted for DJT. They talked about bodies, as Prof mentioned. After 4-5 hours of presentations, I just had enough content/context to help my clients on their upcoming '18 elections.

The images will show impact. The numbers will show impact. But, in diversity of thought, geography, color, economic circumstances, etc., it failed spectacularly. It also failed as speakers used bad language and crude generalizations for everyone in GOP or who voted for Trump.

NB: The next POTUS will certainly be a woman. That is a guarantee. The fact that DJT/Pence are both white men is a sure sign that it is a 1-term admin. This cannot be changed!

So, who is next POTUS (Female)? Is it Warren from MA, Amy from MN, or Kamala from CA?

Start your predictions now!

There is such a thing as over-analyzing the words and actions of really silly people.

They'd be annoying enough if they were college-age women - hey, they're young, whatever. But if you're middle-aged or old and think you're doing something meaningful and effective by knitting pink "pussy-hats" and prancing around the public square with juvenile placards, you're just kinda pathetic. I'm embarrassed for you. Some people are really lacking in any sense of their own dignity.

At least they're keeping their clothes on. I guess we can be grateful for that.

This is the sign that caught my attention (not in Madison): "Make them pay for razors if we pay for tampons." But men do pay for razors. Gracie Allen lives!

Big Mike म्हणाले...

@America's Politco, you could be right, but I think not. It's the "mean girls" syndrome. The sort of women at the March in DC would never dream of voting for a Republican woman, no matter how qualified she is (i.e., the Republican is not part of their "in" clique). But Republican women get that, and they're going to return the favor by not voting for a hard core lefty female. So there's the stalemate.

If Trump's economy is ticking along at a 4% growth rate and white working class women are able to stay home with their kids because their husbands are no longer restricted to 29 hours a week, then I do not expect Trump to be a one-termer.

buwaya म्हणाले...

I want to be more charitable than some here I think.
This does not have to make sense. Very few political movements make sense, if you go by whats on their signs. You cannot extract a piece of viable legislation from protesters signs.
All these functions are for is propaganda, of a very general sort. These are a show of force, of intimidation, and of safety in numbers.

We hate X, we are many, support X and fear us, oppose X and you can do do safely.

This is a, or probably the, reason why the left goes out of its way to shut down right wing manifestations in colleges. If the right can't show its numbers they can be intimidated.

Just think if all of these social justice warriors took the dollars they spent today and put it in a trust, the problem of abortion access to poor folks would probably be solved. Trump made a major mistake by not including more/and more women of color in cabinet. But, this shows to GOP women in 2020, that GOP has no bench! Just like Dems did not have a bench after Hillary!

There have been questions about what the purpose for these massive marches are. To be completely honest, I believe they are pushback by the majority for what was a fraudulent election of an illegitimate president. Women's issues are just a part of this, as he is a known misogynist and possibly worse. I know that there are millions of people who want to lay waste to this administration. We want an American president who hasn't been co opted by a foreign power, especially one like Russia. Americans who are patriotic in their hearts (as Trump says) will keep protesting and marching until this fraud is gone and our government is out of his dirty hands. This is part of what the "Resistance" is all about. The man is morally reprehensible, even without being a traitor.

With the investigations into possible collusion between Trump and Putin with intercepts showing an exchange of monies between the Kremlin and the Trump campaign I think that we may see the end of Trump this year. If he nixes or interferes with the federal agencies that are investigating him, the American people will bring back what resembles the Vietnam War protests. Protests are what eventually helped end the Vietnam war.

Then there was Clinton's Water Closet that exposed rampant [class] diversity and anti-nativism by Democrat elites, which was confirmed by the bigotry and violence of their foot soldiers on inauguration day.

Exactly. Tantrums. Toddler mentality.

You know what a wise parent does with tantrums. Let the crying kicking toddler just lay there and expend all their energy in fruitless tantrum theatrics.

My daughter used to throw tantrums. Used to is the operative word. That phase lasted for a couple of months. I would ignore the tantrum, unless she was actually going to accidentally hurt herself then I would intervene to keep her from getting hurt, move the item getting ready to fall on her.

Basically the script was...throw herself on the floor, cry, thrash etc. I would get up, quietly step over her and go sit in another room and look at a magazine. She would get up, after noticing that there wasn't an audience, go into the other room, throw herself on the floor and dramatically proceed to tantrum. I get up...go into the other room....rinse and repeat. Until she was totally worn out. NO words are spoken by me. No yelling. No threats. Just move and ignore. It is hard to do that because you WANT to yell and threaten.

Once she was totally worn out, I would ask. Are you done now? And then we would talk about what was going on and why she STILL wasn't going to get the freaking cookie until AFTER dinner....or whatever the power struggle was all about.

This is what we need to do with these adult toddlers.

There is a simple issue:

Protests BEFORE anything has happened are just a temper tantrum. Nothing more.

And if Trump does something they truly find egregious, how will you know the difference, since we can already see that they will have massive protests over, literally, nothing.

And given her lifestyle, if women wish to portray Beyonce as some feminist, then the concept of feminism means nothing.

I do get the concern --- but we HAD perfectly legal abortion before Roe v Wade. I don't think a federal policy works for it. Allowing states to make the choice that is best for them sounds like the best policy. And it drops one of the more ludicrously tortured decisions ever.

But this has not happened. And Trump cannot make it happen.

And, let it be known, Judd was far more obscene than anything Trump has said.

And if these women think the most important thing about themselves is their possession of a vagina, as a man, what value am I supposed to assign to them? How can I value these women for their minds, etc when the only things they PRESENT to the world is that they have vaginas. Which I did not, at any point, doubt they had.

Tragic that women's rights could only be protected by placing a criminal in the WH...

I was never a birther but I never understood why being one was called "racism." I recall questions coming up about McCain and Cruz on exactly the same grounds.

It was silly because there were many other reasons to question Obama's fitness for the job, but it's only racist if you consider any criticism of Obama to be racist - and of course, many liberals did, just like they called any criticism of Hill sexist. It's ultimately counterproductive because it will make people wary of voting for any Dem who belongs to one of the Dem's pet groups.

The birther thing is interesting because both sides take absurd positions.
Suppose it is 2010 and you got your hands on evidence that Obama was really born in Kenya and so is not eligible to become president. A Kenyan doctor's certificate that passes forensics, witnesses, etc. What do you think will happen? You show the evidence to the cops or the FBI and they drive up to the White House and emerge with Obama, The Pretender, in handcuffs? "And I would've have gotten away with it, if it weren't for those birthers!" He says as they stuff him in a squad car and take him to the airport for a one way trip to Nairobi.
Or the other side believing that the evidence is irrefutable that the Obama who moved into the White House is the same Obama that was born in Kapiolani Children's hospital in 1961? Like it says in Wikipedia and his official bio? I mean, Obama doesn't remember, he's going by word of mouth and secondary sources about the time and place of his birth, like everyone else, including me.
I was born in Minneapolis at General hospital. If someone came up to me with evidence or a theory he said proved I was really born somewhere else, or that the person named on the genuine birth certificate with my name on it wasn't really me, I might think that they were crazy, but I'd be interested in seeing why they believed what they believed. Trump stands a very good chance in 2 of the 3 -- jobs and safe neighborhoods. But improving schools will be much trickier for him because, by and large, the teachers and administrators will work against him, sabotaging improvements if necessary. For example, given what I know about my local high school, they will absolutely hate having to put up his photo anywhere near their offices, let alone follow any directive or policy suggestion. Educational improvements will become a wholly state & local level issue.

Sprezzatura म्हणाले...

Chick,

Not to mention that having more educated folks means moving folks out of DJT's base, so that could be counterproductive anyway. If Meade had his thinkin' cap on he'd note that more lowly educated Americans is best for DJT re reelect.

Re jobs, don't all administrations end up w/ net + numbers, because of population growth, if nothing else? So that's enough for DJT to declare a massive, unbelievable, beautiful victory.

Crime has been going down for a long time. Even if DJT can't keep the rate of decline as steady, any decline will be plenty for him to declare so much winning that folks should be sick of winning.

Anywho, using Meade's math and your comment re education, it's impossible for DJT to not be reelected. The key is to keep folks lowly educated. Ideally DJT should try to increase their numbers relative to the highly educated folks.

I understand, Ann, why you say this, but I find it more than a bit chilling.

"Abortion is better presented as the woman's choice about what do with her body, not any hatred toward the unborn."

I mean, I have to wonder, why is "hatred toward the unborn" problematic, but destroying the unborn is not? I'd say anything one is prepared to destroy and claim the right to be allowed to destroy is already effectively "hated" enough, wouldn't you? What is the point of harshly judging the emotion of hatred if you've already decided that which is hated is of no moral stature whatsoever anyway? I've sometimes had to kill a wasp in my bedroom. Sometimes I do it dispassionately. But sometimes I hate the little buggers. I might even feel a bit of remorse about that, but I do not lose sleep over it. But that's because it's a wasp.

I say this as someone who is in favor of abortion rights, as long as they are properly constrained and not regarded as some sacred right. I just think people should be honest about what they are destroying when the destroy it.

As to the demonstrations regarding Trump, I find it odd that abortion and lifestyle matters have been so central to them. The hysteria about Trump is almost beyond belief in its venomous hatred of him, since we are talking about hatred. I watched the totally unhinged Ashely Judd rant as if she were Lenin urging her minions to storm the Winter Palace. If you want to task hatred, you'd be better off calling to account those who have become a total disgrace in their intemperate hostility about the outcome of a perfectly legitimate democratic election.

I think John Roberts will turn out to be the biggest obstacle to overturning Roe. It would just compound the error that has already undermined the status of the court. The issue should have been resolved by legislatures and elections. In other words, politics. The Court make itself way too overtly political via Roe. But overturning it now would be even more political than the first decision. I expect Roberts to try to guide the court to a consensus that would allow more limitations on abortion, in the European model, but without eliminating the constitutional basis of the decision. More "balancing" tests, to be sure, but better than the absolutist divide we have now.
