"Typical Trump voters... white men with work boots and fuzzy beards in their early 30s to mid 40s."

The words of Wisconsin state Democratic Sen. Kathleen Vinehout.

(Vinehout is one of the Democrats you typically see listed as a possible challenger to Scott Walker in the 2018 gubernatorial race.)

do we have any witnesses who saw these 30 year old white men with beards and work boots voting for Trump?

maybe they are socialists who think they're making America great again

innocent politically unaware socialists! it could happen!

Maybe they are Philosophy professors who were simply back from working their communal organic farm.

"do we have any witnesses who saw these 30 year old white men with beards and work boots voting for Trump?" I'll be a witness. Saw two of them at my polling place, right ahead of me. Never seen them in my neck of the woods before, which isn't that big. One was told he was at the wrong polling station, and got instructions about where to go and what to do. Though I resisted extrapolating from the anecdote, I sensed then, in the morning, that something was happening. Of course, they didn't tell me they were voting for Trump, but I took a wild guess.

Based on what I saw in my own neighborhood (suburban area in a southern state that (surprisingly to some people) was won by Trump, I think she's more or less correct.

The college educated white men at the office where I work all voted for Hillary. The guy with the work truck up the street had a Trump/Pence sign out front of his duplex for months. The work boots and jeans guy I saw getting into his car after buying a 12 pack of beer at the 7/11 after work had a Trump sticker on his car. That sort of thing. Now some of these guys might have a college education, too, they're just not working in jobs that would require it I don't think.

Obviously not scientific, just my own observations.

“And I’m kind of frustrated with some of the Madison insiders who constantly run cookie cutter campaigns, and they don’t realize a campaign in a rural area is very different,” Vinehout said. “If you’ve got a candidate who’s really in that area, who does the parades and the chicken dinners … It’s much better than talking with wealthy people and putting a lot of money into TV ads or direct mailers.”

-- She can't even analyze how Trump did well without sounding patronizing.

Here's Vinehout putting air quotes around something, probably potential candidate. Or maybe she's just doing her Tyrannosaurus schtick.

I believe there is only one nation in the world with a constitution, described by its supporters as "progressive", that establishes institutional class diversity/racism as a matter of law. Perhaps the only one ever to enjoy that notorious achievement.

What's wrong with white men in work boots and fuzzy beards? Would it be better if the were clean shaven, wore Nikes and were unemployed? How arrogant.

I see the Wisconsin state senate and assembly is even more Republican after the 2016 elections.
In the state senate, one Dem incumbent was beaten and another Dem incumbent is only up by 56 votes with a recount looming. It will be either 20-13 or 21-12 GOP in the senate.
In the assembly, one Dem incumbent lost to make it 64-35 GOP.

Wisconsin really is a turning into a red state.

sane_voter বলেছেন...

Vinehout had the 2nd closest WI state senate race in 2014, winning with 52.6% of the vote. Maybe she should be a little more careful in stereotyping her constituents if she hopes to get re-elected.

There are other classes of "typical" Trump voters. There are the educated women who were fighting the good fight for women's rights back in the early 1970s and who would like to see a female President of the United States, but OMG!!! NOT HILLARY!!!

There are Ph.D. mathematicians. I am aware that the set of Ph.D. mathematicians who voted for Trump is not null.

There are that fraction of the Millennials on whom it has dawned that they are not only underemployed (if employed at all) but will continue to be underemployed unless and until the economy gets turned around. And they didn't trust Hillary to accomplish that.

I have observed that many post-menopausal women start to look like men. But it's not the estrogen---it's their choice in style. They seem to lose their femininity, perhaps in the misguided attempt to look 'professional'. It's one reason I keep my hair shoulder-length instead of short, like 95% of women my age.

IMHO, a woman looks more businesslike in a simply-styled dress than in a pantsuit. I always thought Carly Fiorina looked both professional and feminine.

Oh, the answer is the same as it was for Brexit. The Good People simply didn't explain to us clearly enough how all of their opponents were lowlife racist xenophobes. If they had just stated a little more emphatically that I was stupid and evil for disliking Hillary Clinton, I would have been persuaded. I mean, really? These people thought that was a good way to get people to vote for them?

I have to admit I fell for it to some degree. I thought Trump was awful and expected he would be wiped out in a landslide. I've voted Libertarian in maybe the last 5 presidential elections so none of this was going to affect my vote anyway, and I took great pleasure in almost totally ignoring the whole presidential campaign. But now that it is over.... I find to my surprise that I'm delighted and relieved that Trump won. Never thought I'd say THAT.

JorgXMcKie বলেছেন...

Depending on what area I'm in, if I see work boots I sometimes see boots that have been, you know, worked in, and sometimes I see 'work' boots that are still pristine. And expensive. Saw my first lumbersexual this past summer [at a vegan coffeehouse -- what the heck, it has great coffee and great craft beers and the hipsters leave me alone] and I liked to spit it was so funny. The guy was so freakin' SERIOUS about his look. I would have loved to hand him my double bit axe [not razor sharp, but very sharp indeed] and see if he could use it without cutting anything off his body.

I believe there was a big "fuck you" vote for Trump. As Peggy Noonan wrote in the WSJ:

The big fact of the week, however, has to do with these words: They don’t like us. The Democrats, progressives and left-liberals who have been embarrassed by the latest WikiLeaks dump really hate conservatives, or nonleftists. They don’t like half the people of the country they seek to control! They look at that half with disdain and disrespect. Their disdain is not new—“bitter clingers,” “basket of deplorables.” But here it’s so unashamed and eager to express itself.

...

Here’s what you see in the emails: the writers are the worst kind of snobs, snobs with nothing to recommend them. In their expression and thoughts they are common, banal, dumb, uninformed, parochial.

I don’t know about you but when people look down on me I want them to be distinguished or outstanding in some way—towering minds, people of exquisite sensibility or learning. Not these grubbly poseurs, these people who’ve never had a thought but only a sensation: Christians are backward, I saw it in a movie!

It’s the big fact of American life now, isn’t it? That we are patronized by our inferiors.
