Oh, now, you're independent...

Email from The NYT: "Give the gift of independent journalism with The Times, and save up to 50%."

But they still aren't journalism.

Nonapod म्हणाले...

Well, you can't expect Carlos Slim to pay for all the Progressive propaganda by himself.

mccullough म्हणाले...

A 50% discount on independence. Must be a smaller edition. The partisan edition is still
full cost.

traditionalguy म्हणाले...

WTF? Has NYT been sold to Trump. That will make it great again. How do I subscribe!

Hagar म्हणाले...

The New York Times do not follow the Democratic Party; it expects the Party to follow it.

PB म्हणाले...

Independent fish-wrap.

Big Mike म्हणाले...

@Althouse there's a way that you can retire independently wealthy. Just buy a couple Times. journalists for what they're really worth and sell them for what they think they're worth.

Yancey Ward म्हणाले...

Ann,

Did you see the op-ed from the Trump-supporting roommate at NYU?

Eric the Fruit Bat म्हणाले...

Up to?

mezzrow म्हणाले...

That's their story, and they're sticking to it.

JAORE म्हणाले...

I get these on FB regularly. I take a small degree of pleasure by responding why I decline.

Dude1394 म्हणाले...

Hilarious... and clueless

MaxedOutMama म्हणाले...

Independent as in "not fiscally owned by the DNC". Only intellectually.

Todd म्हणाले...

The NYT is independent alright, independent from reality...

Drago म्हणाले...

Independent from Republicans/conservatives/libertarians/social conservatives? Undoubtedly.

Independent from Dems/leftists/libs/Marxists? Not so much.

glenn म्हणाले...

Objectivity and integrity are like virginity. They all end in "y" and when you lose them they are gone.

The problem is that nothing is worth more than what someone else is willing to pay for it. You could probably buy them pretty cheap but selling them could be a real challenge.

Wince म्हणाले...

Clicking Althouse NYT links I've been bumping up against a firm 10 article views a month pay wall for the last week or so.

Great excuse to pop off with a comment without having read the story!

The Vault Dweller म्हणाले...

I've always heard that actions speak louder than words, but if your business is journalism your actions are your words.

jimbino म्हणाले...

At least they're independent of Amazon.com and its promotions, which I can't say for lots of bloggers.

Rob म्हणाले...

The flailing New York Times?

The Vault Dweller म्हणाले...

jimbino said... At least they're independent of Amazon.com and its promotions, which I can't say for lots of bloggers.

Beware the Amazon-Althouse Blogdustrial complex. Recommendations for Panini presses, cause sales of Panini presses, which in turn causes more Panini press money to funneled to bloggers like Althouse, which in turn causes them to make more posts about Panini presses!

Bad Lieutenant म्हणाले...

So jimbino, are you going to draw a linkage between Althouse, Amazon and the WaPo?

Michelle Dulak Thomson म्हणाले...

Yancey Ward,

Whether or no Ann saw it, I did. I must say it took some cojones for the NYT to publish that. Also for her to write it.

Michelle Dulak Thomson म्हणाले...

jimbino, you can hardly blame Amazon affiliates for advertising their affiliation. Ann and Glenn are asking you to throw some money their way. So does the ASPCA, which is the Amazon affiliate I choose to subscribe to. All equally wrong?

Bad Lieutenant म्हणाले...

I think J favors the ping pong pizza affiliate

jimbino म्हणाले...

I don't know about you, Vault Dweller, but with my Muttermilch I learned to shun folks who take or offer kickbacks, especially if secret, as well as offers for membership in clubs that charge dues that they send off to Washington, and offers of insurance for health care, travel, food and sex instead of just health care, travel, food and sex.

great Unknown म्हणाले...

I wonder if there is a legal definition of "independent", such that eventually the NYT could be sued for fraud.

Crimso म्हणाले...

"Recommendations for Panini presses, cause sales of Panini presses, which in turn causes more Panini press money to funneled to bloggers like Althouse, which in turn causes them to make more posts about Panini presses!"

Or, you know, gunsmithing lathes.

sane_voter म्हणाले...

Here is the Op ed response by the Trump supporting roommate. no surprise that the comments are a cesspool of intolerance.

chuck म्हणाले...

When I click on a Washington Post link, the popup blocking the story says "You obviously love great journalism...". At that point I snicker and click away. The front page today is pretty much straight anti-Trump opinion. If the Post thinks that is great journalism they are delusional.

jimbino म्हणाले...

Paying an Amazon kickback is like using a credit card with 3% fee when I can negotiate a 3% discount for cash payment. While I can't fault the credit card company for trying to get its cut of consumer ignorance, I feel they mostly haven't provided me any service at all when I'm there ready and willing to pay cash for merchandise, but I sure do fault the merchant who won't give me a 3% (or higher) discount. Indeed, I always negotiate a cash discount for all high-ticket items, as I just did for an $18,000 Subaru, even, and especially, when negotiating with doctors and dentists, who usually understand the logic of my not wanting to send part of my payment for medical care off to Chase Bank for nothing. Most just offer me a flat 5% off, which I consider reasonable.

When I buy online from Amazon, the obvious inconvenience of paying cash justifies the low (probably less than 2%) hit I take. But Amazon just insults me as a client by charging me (indirectly) for kickbacks for services I don't need, like a blogger's link to amazon.com, for Chrissake! Once we get a practical alternative to Amazon that accepts bitcoin, it's byebye Amazon, byebye Visa and byebye MasterCard.

Here in Kenosha, we have a gas station, Lou Perrine's, that gives a deep discount (of some 10 cents per gallon), for cash on the barrelhead. He has my repeat business. Amazon has a long way to go to earn it.

Static Ping म्हणाले...

Maybe it means "Independent" as in the newspaper in the UK. That would not be accurate either, but the comparison is probably slightly more accurate.

Martin म्हणाले...

I get NYT offers in the mail about 1-2X per month, probably because I live in a liberal, university area.

I am gratified that they waste postage and production costs on me.

I gave up the Sunday NYT some years ago, but I miss the wedding announcements. It's kind of like reading Trollope. The Way We Live Now, and all that.

This is the NYT email I received on Sunday:

Dear New York Times Reader,

The ballots have been counted. The United States has a new president. Now it’s time to save on the coverage you need to understand what happens next.

So definitive. I guess a recount is not needed according to the NYT ad department.

But since this is 2016 it really should have been written ... "The United States has a new president and you will not believe what happens next".

Fred Drinkwater म्हणाले...

sane_voter: I read the reply op-ed you linked to and then the first 50 or so comments.
My conclusion is that commenters at the NYT are mostly immature.
The comments thread reads like something from Facebook or YouTube.
And yet those folks probably see themselves as the directors of the future course of the country.

Drago म्हणाले...

chuck: "If the Post thinks that is great journalism they are delusional."

They don't just think it is great journalism, they actually believe, deeply, that they are being astonishingly courageous.

Perhaps courage that might only be equaled by dodging sniper fire in Bosnia.

MacMacConnell म्हणाले...

The independent New York Times 48 hours after Fidel's death is still dry humping his corpse. That independent New York times?

Comanche Voter म्हणाले...

New York Times says it is independent and unbiased.

Donald Trump claims that there are independent and unbiased witnesses who say that the size of his membrum virile is not related at all to the size of his hands and feet.

Guess which set of witnesses I'm more likely to believe.

cubanbob म्हणाले...

The NYT: independent from objective reality or the NYT is real proof of the multiverse theory, it's all true but in another universe.Paging Rod Serling.

Bay Area Guy म्हणाले...

Objection -- argument by assertion. Just cuz you SAY you are independent, doesn't mean that you are, Pinch.

Between Walter Duranty and Herbert Matthews, lotta ghosts wafting around Times Square.

I will consider NYTimes Independent, if and only if, Krugman/Friedman/Blow/Brooks/Kristoff are all shown the door, replaced by Mr. Spatula.

Big Mike म्हणाले...

@Larry J of course I was being facetious. They were bought and sold years ago.

Let's all check the etymology of the Pineda surname.

CWJ म्हणाले...

I think the author of the op-ed response writes well, and shows great restraint vis-a-vis the hysteria of the original op-ed that forced this. The irony is that the original mud slinger is the one who imagines herself as a future writer.

Hagar म्हणाले...

Charlie Rose eulogizing Castro on CBS News tonight.
I guess Fdel is still their hero.

CWJ म्हणाले...

Now went back and read some of the comments. It's the unhinged who seem most motivated to comment. I really hope I don't encounter any of them in future. We seem to be raising a much larger number of sandwich board wearing soap box in the park shouting credentialed idiots than in years past.

Leora म्हणाले...

If you open the Times links in an incognito window you can get around the 10 article limit - however you can't comment incognito.

Hagar म्हणाले...

I expect you can also purge your computer with CCleaner or some similar product to get rid of the cookies and their computer will think it is your first try when you open the link.

narciso म्हणाले...

Well they got his job, by fooling Herbert Matthews.

Unknown म्हणाले...

Thank you for sharing the interesting information. As I hoped, these info will be useful to many people.

Maureen Dowd on Thanksgiving with her Trump-loving relatives plus Pineda makes two independent journalism articles so far in November. Perhaps the NYT raised the cut-off on independent articles from 0 to 2 after meeting with Trump and cutting a deal.

Diary of a NYT Reporter…

Monday: Had lunch with a Democratic operative “off the record”. He bought lunch — nice restaurant, I had the most expensive item on the menu! He gave me a list of points about the article I was writing: with his notes it practically writes itself!

Tuesday: Met with editor. Told me to change “unnamed source” to “an expert who spoke on the condition of anonymity”. Damn that really did make a difference!

Wednesday: Student loan payment is due. Money is tight: need to hit up some sources for more free lunches to get by. Probably a good time to pad the expense account: I have a source that is good for me picking up the tab, then reimbursing me in cash: Ka-ching!

Thursday: Met girl at bar: told her I was a reporter for The New York Times. She told me that’s cool, she LOVES “The New Yorker” — especially the cartoons. I didn’t correct her, but told her I did some of the cartoons myself, it was just one of my talents that comes effortlessly. Gave some bullshit about the importance of line and composition. Got a blow-job. Eh: average.

Friday: Rent is due. For everything I do for this country I should be making a lot more money. I SHAPE OPINION, dammit. I'd ask for a raise, but there are a hundred people behind me that would gladly take my job. Capitalism sucks.

Saturday: Editor calls me at home. Says I need to shift to the passive voice when describing bad things happening to those on “our Side.” I’ll get the hang of this yet.

Sunday: Bill collector keeps calling. For everything I do for this country I should be making a LOT more money. Maybe it is not my place to say, but I think the paper should’ve pushed for Bernie Sanders, not Hillary: it would’ve been cool to get my student loan forgiven. Still, I figure the Powers-That-Be they know what they’re doing.

I am Laslo.

I saved 100% by not subscribing to the NY Times. Yay, me!

Ann Althouse म्हणाले...

"Clicking Althouse NYT links I've been bumping up against a firm 10 article views a month pay wall for the last week or so."

But my links will override the limit. I guess if you want to save 10 to spread over the whole month, I'm undercutting that practice. But I put up a few NYT links every day, they get you in without a wall, and you could read 100 NYT pieces a month — 100 I've selected with good reason.

If you think preserving your 10 carefully is more valuable, explain why.

You can always get 10 more by using private browsing.

Anyway, I don't see the good reason for your objection (assuming you like this blog).

Goju म्हणाले...

50% off on independent journalism? So the NYT is subsidizing subscriptions to other papers?
