Geoff Muldaur and Jim Kweskin. Love them.

Here's their new album: "Penny's Farm."

Here's a video of them playing in 2013:

Was Geoff Muldaur married to Maria Muldaur, of "Midnight at the Oasis"?

Ann Althouse म्हणाले...

Yes, and both were in the Jim Kweskin Jug Band.

Geez, Brings back old memories. Hadn't thought of Jim Kweskin and his jug band since the 60's

Sweet. Did the sing "Washington At Valley Forge"? And assuming Mel Lyman was not brought up. When I moved from right to left coast, Dan Hicks was my goto acoustic warrior to satisfy that jug band/Django swing/gypsy jones.

Liked them long ago and still do. Thanks AA.

Blues in the Bottle

My favorite rendition, featuring Wauwatosa native and author of "The New Amphetamine Shriek" Pete Stampfel.

NPR has killed off any interest in this kind of music in me.

a couple of my favorites from way back... used to see the jug band at the Main Point in Bryn Mawr Pa and we created out own jug band and had a couple of years of fun playing in the band... that is until everyone had to go electric... have come full circle returning to acoustic... there are so many fun songs and eras of music that kweskin introduced me to... thanks for sharing about the concert..

In that first photo, is there something between his head and the guitar?

Speaking of NPR and PBS, at what point is their rampant use of hillbilly music considered cultural appropriation?

Ann Althouse म्हणाले...

"In that first photo, is there something between his head and the guitar?"

It's just an odd guitar strap I think. He plays sitting down so maybe that position of the strap is more comfortable.

Ann Althouse म्हणाले...

As for NPR ruining it... why are you listening to stuff on NPR like that? I don't listen to that. I just remember what reached my heart back in the 1960s.

The guy standing? Yes. Padded guitar strap that is not attached to the bottom end of the guitar but instead is attached to the bottom below the sound opening of the guitar. If you are playing and standing it is quite awkward to have your right arm have to go 'around' the strap and hold you elbow out in a very angular way. The padding is to make your neck, which is now holding the weight of the guitar more comfortable.

Like others this a trip down memory lane for me!!! Not only because they were at Stoughton, WI, where I live for eleven years until moving to Michigan a few years back. But also because these old codgers got their start back in the early 1960s, and I saw them often at Club 47 Mount Auburn Street in Cambridge, MA. That little dive was where Joan Baez often appeared before she became famous, along with Eric von Schmidt, Joni Mitchell, Judy Collins, Pete Seeger, Taj Mahal and all sorts of other famous blues singers. Also a little guy from flyover country whom Joan Baez brought along, named Bob Dylan. Back then it was Jim Kweskin's Jug Band. Wow. I had no idea the guy was still around - and he's better than ever judging by this clip.

Another connection for me, I find. Jim Kweskin was born in Stamford, CT. in 1940, two years or so before I was born in the very same place (we lived in Norwalk, CT, but it was the Stamford hospital where it happened to me.)

Wish I'd been in Stoughton last night.

despite what althouse is advising here, i've enjoyed and learned a lot listening, watching and supporting NPA and PBS... i would hope that others would support what i consider a national jewel ... just saying... right now i'm watching a doc on the mamas/papas which i dare say would never make it to the light of day on 'commercial' tv...

I'm not choosing to listen to that stuff on NPR....it's a style they often play in snippets all day long if you have it on in the background.

I'm glad that it moved you back then....but I give in to that feeling too often as it is, and I try to resist it. It makes the past seem better than it may have been, but more importantly, (for me) it keeps me from finding new things, things that I may like even more than stuff I grew up with.

It's always hard to decide the merits of both past and present....we put too much spin in either direction!

Such a great place to see an acoustic show, always a listening audience and such a wonderful room for music. Glad you enjoyed it.

Just saw John Sebastian down here at the Franklin Theatre. He had a funny story about having a crush on a cute Italian girl named Maria Demotta. Finally got enough courage to ask her out to a jug band show. Said she really, really took a shine to one of the musicians and he went home alone. The musician was Geoff Muldaur.

JS puts on an excellent if slightly meandering one man show. Much better guitarist than I would have assumed and played a dynamite harmonica encore.

I had forgotten all about these guys. Loved the Jug Band. Have to get right on the iTunes store.
