Badgers defeat preseason #5 LSU who was also a ten point favorite.

Huskers and Badgers headed to epic showdown.

bwebster рдо्рд╣рдгाрд▓े...

I, for one, was tickled Wisconsin beat LSU. Go, Badgers!

Anthony рдо्рд╣рдгाрд▓े...

GEAUXXXXXXX BADGERS!

AllenS рдо्рд╣рдгाрд▓े...

This was a big win.

Bobber Fleck рдо्рд╣рдгाрд▓े...

Kudos to the Wisconsin defense that made this win possible. Nice start for Paul Chryst and the Badgers.

College sports beats the heck out of pro sports.

Humperdink рдо्рд╣рдгाрд▓े...

Nothing better than seeing a Big Ten team beat an SEC team loaded with "student" athletes (cough).

traditionalguy рдо्рд╣рдгाрд▓े...

LSU was no more a top 5 than Oklahoma was.

Coaching counts more than super recruits do. Otherwise Notre Dame and Texas would never lose.

mockturtle рдо्рд╣рдгाрд▓े...

I'm happy for your UW and also for my UW [U. of Washington] who also won their opener today. :-)

David Begley рдо्рд╣рдгाрд▓े...

Traditionalguy

I put little value on those HS ranking services; especially for basketball. Doug McDermott - the consensus college player of the year from Creighton - was tabbed as only a mid-level Valley player. Iowa and Iowa State had zero interest in Kyle Korver; now an NBA All Star.

Bob R рдо्рд╣рдгाрд▓े...

Heck of a nice win!

Curious George рдо्рд╣рдгाрд▓े...

Enjoy it while you can. With MSU, Michigan, and the Buckeyes coming up, it's about to get ugly.

David рдо्рд╣рдгाрд▓े...

"Huskers and Badgers headed to epic showdown."

Who (what?) are Huskers?

David Begley рдо्рд╣рдгाрд▓े...

David

The University of Nebraska Cornhuskers; same division as the Wisconsin Badgers.

ndspinelli рдо्рд╣рдгाрд▓े...

I like the middle aged QB for Wisconsin.

Jerk.

I'm especially happy for Houston.

sane_voter рдо्рд╣рдгाрд▓े...

Saw a clip of the blind-sided cheap shot the LSU player delivered to the Wisconsin player on the clinching interception. He should be banned for the season. Who knows what brain damage that did to the poor player.

Oh yeah!

My fear for the season to come: you won't always play a white secondary. Most of those guys would be Tight Ends if they could actually catch a ball.

I am Laslo.

Yeah, he was pissed and took it out on the poor guy's head. I hope Dixon's OK.

I'll make sure to remind you of my prediction. Don't worry though, Wisconsin as usual has enough patsies to go to some dumbass bowl....with a little luck it may actually be some where warm.

Original Mike рдо्рд╣рдгाрд▓े...

"I'll make sure to remind you of my prediction."

I don't doubt your prediction. I share it I just marvel that you are such an unrelenting asshole.

Guildofcannonballs рдо्рд╣рдгाрд▓े...

"LSU was no more a top 5 than Oklahoma was."

So how much did you win?

Oh, you only have vision 20/20 after the fact, except for your religion. And your use of "to be" as they say.

Forget your Irish-Scot schtick: Trump is all New York American you little punk.

Saluting your religion of men continuously out-stupiding themselves is anti-Christian.

Guildofcannonballs рдо्рд╣рдгाрд▓े...

"Derp derp I am so smart I know what is going to happen."

Derp derp yet you are too fucking stupid to bet on it, bitch, which is dumber than not knowing and not betting.

LOL,

We used to feel the same way in the PAC-8, when the number one ranked Big Ten team (remember Woody Hayes, Student body right?) would come out to LA for the Rose Bowl. The underdog PAC 8 team would let Rose Princesses show those big farm boys around, have some tequila, good dope, then take them out on New Years day and introduce them to the Forward Pass. great fun

Humperdink рдо्рд╣рдгाрд▓े...

Lowest score ever recorded on the Wonderlic test, the test given to NFL prospects, was a 4. The "student" athlete who achieved this record was an LSU cornerback.

You're dreaming. While the Pac 8 won way more than they lost it wasn't because of some difference in passing oriented versus running oriented offenses. Hell, one of the major reasons was that the Big 10 would send it's runner up because you could attend the Rose Bowl two consecutive years.

Curious George рдо्рд╣рдгाрд▓े...

edit: you could NOT attend the Rose Bowl two consecutive years from the Big 10

mikee рдо्рд╣рдгाрд▓े...

I attended Texas A&M, where arcane traditions abound. So it is with pleasure that I learn the fun stuff that other universities have as perfectly respectable traditions across the nation. Go Badgers!

Sorry, no. The Pac 8 existed from 1968-1977. The Big 10 stopped the "no repeat" in 1972. The Pac 8 never had it.

Hey, the Purple Penguin is back! To spout his usual bullshit. Love most things Wisconsin. Love Milwaukee and all it's festivals. Love State Fair. Love to North Woods where I have a lake home. Just hate the Packers and Badgers. And madison morons like you.

Hope that clears it up for you PP.

"mikee said...I attended Texas A&M, where arcane traditions abound. So it is with pleasure that I learn the fun stuff that other universities have as perfectly respectable traditions across the nation. Go Badgers!"

The Lambeau Leap isn't a Badger tradition, it's done by the Packers. Lambeau is the Packers stadium. This Big 10 SEC preseason deal is new...first time at Lambeau. Wisconsin's players were just aping...which is fun and fine.

Wisconsin has some traditions that are pretty cool..."Jump Around" at the start of the 4th Quarter, although that's fairly recent. 5th Quarter with their band staying on the filed after the game...also kinda new IIRC. I think Wisconsin's biggest tradition is actually just embracing and celebrating mediocrity.

gadfly рдо्рд╣рдгाрд▓े...

Curious George ... I used to take my young sons to to see Badger football in the late '70s and when we moved out of Madison for Central Wisconsin, the wife and I joined friends at Badger games in the early '80s. Back then Camp Randall was a mediocre place to watch football, so passing coeds up to the top of the stadium was the name of the game.

The Badgers were traditionally Big 10 doormats, so the Band became the attraction for party goers who had to have an excuse to drink. That started well before kickoff and dragged into the night after the 5th Quarter band performance. BTW, Paul Soglin was big in Mad City politics even back then.

A few years later, the football team was turning around and the upper deck at Camp Randall actually rocked (with a little help) whenever the band played the Budweiser Song (when you say WIIIIS-CON-SIN, you've said it all).

When I last attended a Badger game in 2008 as an alumnus of the Badger's "beat on the little guy" opponent. Whoa, what a difference a couple of decades makes. A wonderfully remodeled and expanded sold-out stadium, the student card section, and the most spectacular band that I have ever watched at a college football game (and yes, I have been to Ohio Stadium in Columbus - script Ohio don't cut it). Had a wonderful time, Badger fans were great and we actually scored the first two touchdowns before the team in Red got going.

Thanks for the memories.

Curious George рдо्рд╣рдгाрд▓े...

GAdfly...sorry WI band isn't even close to the BDBITL. But yep, Wisconsin football has grown...but still pretenders compared to the Buckeyes and other top programs. It will be a "nice" program until the goal is NC instead of "going to a bowl", which means enjoy what you have.

Chuck рдо्рд╣рдгाрд▓े...

Google "Josh Boutte," (the OG from LSU who decked D'Cota Dixon after intercepting a pass on the ground and then streaking upfield with the ball) and you find about a thousand sports websites headlining it as a "cheap shot," a "late hit" and "clothesline."

From the moment I saw the play (after the game, on televised replay, since I had been at the Michigan-Hawaii game most of the day), I thought that the clearest explanation was NOT an enraged late hit, but rather a guy who did not know that play had stopped; he thought Dixon was on a return and there had been no whistle.

My suspicion was confirmed, when I later saw (posted to YouTube) Les Miles' press conference. Miles himself said that as Boutte came off the field, that is what he said to the coaches. And Miles himself understood that was what happened. Miles is going to review the film. But the "I didn't know the play had been whistled dead" excuse is certainly not something that has been concocted belatedly by LSU; it seems to have been the explanation from the moment it happened.

Fabi рдо्рд╣рдгाрд▓े...

That was my thought, too -- he may not have heard the whistle. Contra: no returner is going to be waving the ball around like that in a live ball situation.

Fine win by Wisconsin!

Chuck рдо्рд╣рдгाрд▓े...

Couldn't agree more, that waving the ball doesn't look like a real play. But it was a split second, with guys running in front of Dixon that looked a hell of a lot like they were running interference/blocking for him, before the hit.

It is just so much more complicated, than a simple cheap shot.

I know others have commented that it was an illegal hit (above the shoulders) even if the whistle hadn't blown. I have issues with how they have called targeting in college football in the last two years. But again; I am willing to entertain an intelligent review of the play. I just don't think it was a simple cheap shot as the national sporting press and the blogosphere has automatically presumed.

Anthony рдо्рд╣рдгाрд▓े...

"I think Wisconsin's biggest tradition is actually just embracing and celebrating mediocrity"

On Wisconsin, On Wisconsin!

Bounce right off that line!

Run the ball three times a series

Punt on fourth and nine!
