Apple's new iPhone software suggests a "nerd" emoji when you type "professor."

"Professor" prompts this:

"When she saw the nerd-face emoji, [Pauline J. Reynolds, an associate professor of leadership and counseling,] said she instantly thought of the Jerry Lewis character in the 1963 comedy The Nutty Professor."

Hey, by the way, did you know that Jerry Lewis is now 90 and he's got a new movie?
[H]e still has a resentful grind to his lower jaw, and that monkeyish mouth is as busy, in “Max Rose,” as it was in “The Nutty Professor” (1963), when, in the guise of Buddy Love, the slick-haired Lothario, he brought a whole night club to a halt. But [the director Daniel] Noah takes a fatal decision to trade snap for mush, and the movie only stirs in the final twenty minutes, when Max pays a nocturnal call on Ben Tracey (Dean Stockwell), who cuckolded him long ago. Regrettably, they make their peace, but, for a moment, the sequence smacks of something threatening and fresh: oldster noir.
That's from the New Yorker review. Here's the trailer:

"trade snap for mush"

I like that.

I would like - no, I insist on - a movie featuring Jerry Lewis and Jerry Lee Lewis.

One is 90, one is 80. They both play piano. Come on, the script writes itself!

Amazing, he certainly does not look nor act as if he were 90. I could only hope.

I have an older sister who was afflicted with Muscular Dystrophy.

I still cannot stomach Jerry Lewis, the unfunniest comedian in world history.

When I was a kid they would play Jerry Lewis movies on TV. Not Martin and Lewis, just Lewis. The ones he wrote and directed. I don't know how well they aged, but they were quite a discovery as a kid. I loved them.

The hat scene in Ladies Man. The elevator scene in Errand Boy. No words spoken. For a kid, it was a revelation. I make no apologies.

I never could stand Jerry Lewis and any admiration I might ever have had for the French was eroded when I learned that they loved him. But The Nutty Professor was very funny.

Do they have a female professor emoji? I had some attractive female professors

Mom is 90, and still gets around. He looks pretty good for 90.

Hey it's Mark Steyn today on Rush! I was unwarned because I don't listen to all of Rush usually, dropping out when it goes to repetition or moral analysis of society.

Trying to think of female professors...

1 German lit
1 Sociology

I think that's it at Oberlin, or anywhere else for that matter.

This film is probably more about the interior life of the characters than the plot, but it would have been nice if the New Yorker had preserved for its readers the sense of threat in the confrontation scene instead of giving away that they made peace. Lame.

I had quite a few female professors: Anatomy & Physiology, Cellular Biology, Microbiology & Pharmacokinetics. My humanities & Poli Sci profs were all men as were my Chemistry and Calculus profs.

Give that emoji slanty eyes, and it would be the old classic depiction of a Japanese, buck teeth, glasses, and all.

RH - I prefer Rush's guest hosts. Buck Sexton is the best.

If someone sends me a message full of emojis, it will get deleted. I personally don't know anyone who would do otherwise.

The professor emoji chosen by algorithm as most authentic had cat eye glasses and a speech bubble calling for 'muscle in here!'

It was rejected by a human 'review' panel and a DNC focus group.

Sprezzatura म्हणाले...

Mine doesn't do that.

I don't have that bar with the suggested spelling and the suggested emoji.

It must be some sort of setting to make that bar appear above the little keyboard thing.

The hopes of professors to remove the nerd stigma dashed by one well placed emoji.

He's got his second wind. When he was in his seventies he looked puffy and fat. He looks better now than he did twenty years ago......He was addicted to painkillers for many years. They took a toll, but apparently he's clean and sober now. You've got to hang in there. The best is yet to be. Maybe this will lead to further roles, and his career will take off.

"Professor" should leave an emoji of Indiana Jones.
