On the Gore Creek Trail.

You can go there too. Here. The Gore Creek Trail was one of 6 trails we walked in 6 days. All 6 trails were beautiful and cost nothing.

This was the first time we used AirBnb, by the way. We found a nice apartment and committed to it for a week (which gets a discount), and that became our home base as we picked a different hike each day. A very thrifty, healthy vacation.

ADDED: Meade did a little video at the spot of the first photograph:

I can appreciate your appreciation of trails, Ann. Best form of recreation and the cheapest, too.

Spoken like a true urbanite.
Hiking on public lands is not supposed to cost anything.

Very cool! (jealousy cloud forms over head)...

Hagar म्हणाले...

"What a view! Is there also one for the enlisted men?"

You pay an entrance fee at state parks and national parks.

The first hike we did, Sylvan Lake, seemed to require a paid day pass, and we bought one, but we ended up parking at a spot that said no sticker was needed.

No mountain bikes. Bah! The Wilderness rules need amending.

How do you like your hiking sticks?
I have a bad hip and find I can walk longer when I use a walking stick on that side. It also takes some pressure off my back.

Also my favorite kind of vacation- huge breakfast then a day of hiking in a national park.

We use ABnB all over the world. Using it for my next surfing vacation in Nova Scotia in September when the hurricanes blow past. The deals after September first are awesome.

Prof. Thanks, we will try that in our family. What was your travel plans, assuming we want to duplicate it? Did you drive there? Any details from Madison to CO will be appreciated.

I'm also a little disturbed by how amazed you are that you didn't have to pay anything to go for a walk in the woods. The fact that you pay an entrance fee to state and national parks has inured us to the scandalous idea that enjoying nature should cost money.

The ocean, if you have the courage and skill to enter, is always free.

Paco Wové म्हणाले...

Ahh, beautiful fresh mountain air, sunshine, and a remarkable lack of Althouse's new commenter buddies.

In NJ almost every beach requires a beach pass to enter and they are not free.

Ann Althouse म्हणाले...

I wasn't "amazed."

I'm just reminding people that some peak experiences are free.

Why did the chicken cross the bridge?

The trekking poles are great for reinforcing surefootedness, especially when going downhill. The sense of ability to correct for any imbalance is very helpful. It's a little bit like having gorilla arms: Your arms are extended to be able to touch the ground. Nearly all of your weight and strength goes through your legs, but the poles make your arms available to help.

The ones we use — these Leki brand poles — have a great handle design that will get you using them intuitively. You really have to use them to learn how incredibly helpful they are.

When you are 65 you can get a pass to all national parks - $10 for a lifetime pass.

After I broke my first expensive set doing stuff your not supposed to with them. FYI You can't place one crossways in the crotch of a tree and attach a rope and expect to climb the rope. I've been through 3 less expensive sets. They are great for crossing rapids providing you don't drop one.

I have pictures of my 12 year old daughter doing handstands on log bridges like that. She used to hand-walk across, to show off her gymnastic skills.

She just finished college a semester early and is hiking the Pacific Crest Trail.

I have never been so jealous of anyone in my life as I am of her youth and ability.
