Is that the film where W.C. says [to Hudson, his daughter], 'Never give a sucker an even break'?

Phrase origin discussion: never give a sucker an even break

Thinking more about the phrase Knopfler used in his lyrics, our friend Ben became convinced that that other famous showman, W.C. Fields, had something to do with it. Sure enough, Wikipedia revealed that Fields had written and starred in a 1941 film called “Never Give a Sucker an Even Break.” He had used the phrase several times before, first in a 1936 film called “Poppy,” and then in 1939’s “You Can’t Cheat an Honest Man.”

Fun to think of the guys and gals in some 1930's Universal City bungalow recording the Poppy number. Wonder what the '40's had in store for them. It was a very, very different world, physically still manifested in so many buildings, public works, and family heirlooms, but psychologically, absolutely vanished.

My favorite Fields film was It's a Gift. Great scenes with the bowling ball bumping down the stairs and the blind man in the store. Kumquats! Fields had the best sense of comic timing in all of show biz, IMO.

The American poor used to be better dressed than the modern wealthy, at least in the movies.

I like International House when Peggy says "I'm sitting on something" and WC Fields says "I lost mine in the Stock Market".

They find out she is sitting on "a pussy"...
