Bryce Harper wants to make baseball more fun for the fans -- more levels is the NBA or NFL. He's a brash young guy and a very good player. Mike Trout is a very good player and young guy as well and a bit more of a baseball traditionalist when it comes to bat flips and celebrating big hits or plays. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. I think Harper is probably right. A little more celebration might be good.

I don't buy that as an excuse for bad behavior, though. The game needs to be fun to watch, sure. It's certainly more fun to watch when the players seem to be having a good time. A sense of professionalism, though, should separate the rec leagues from...the pros. I don't want them to be somber, but they should be serious--they can (and should!) play with emotion, but they should also exhibit sportsmanship and "be professionals." Rivalries are good and it doesn't hurt the game when players are comfortable showing that they don't like other players or teams, but when they act unprofessionally (needlessly attacking umps, showboating, etc) I think it does hurt the game, long-term. "Professional" wrestling has a lot of fans and seems to be considered entertaining by a lot of people, but I'd rather pro baseball as a sport forego that kind of popularity if it can only be achieved by lowering the traditional standards for player behavior.

Easy for me to say, of course (I don't own a ball club).

Trout and Harper are amazing young players.

But, I'm having trouble re-connecting with baseball in general. Like many folks it was passed on to me by my Dad, which was a cherished connection. And, when my son was a kid, I passed it on to him.

But, now that my son has grown away from it, most of my love for baseball is in the memories, not in the current box scores.

Trump's name only appears in 6 headline items in the WAPO today. They are slipping.

RE Labs and fat. One of my good friends daughter once said in awed tones "Labradogs is always hungry!". Never fails to get a laugh from my Lab owning friends and is certainly true in this house.

There are all kinds of feeders and toys for cats designed to make them smarter. Why would anyone want to make them smarter?

I was talking about this with someone who has dogs, and we agreed that we had theoretically overvalued intelligence in pets. In practice, if a pet isn't being trained to do something special like agility or tracking, being stupid is fine. Sweetness trumps intelligence in pets.
