Break out the champagne! Yesterday's raid did, as intended, get man believed to have led the Paris attacks.

"Abdelhamid Abaaoud, the Belgian militant suspected of orchestrating the Paris terrorist attacks, was killed in a police raid in the northern Paris suburb of St.-Denis early Wednesday, the French authorities announced on Thursday. The confirmation of Mr. Abaaoud’s death followed forensic tests, the Paris prosecutor, François Molins, said in a statement."

Not as intended, they wanted him alive. Better get some of those fentanyl bombs from the Russkies next time.

I am not a believer in this quote by John Donne:

Any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in Mankind; And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.

The world is a better place without Abdelhamid Abaaoud in it. His death does not diminish me in the slightest. As is sometimes said in Texas, "He deserved killing."

In a way, though, it would've been better to capture him alive. It's easier to extract information from a living terrorist than a dead one. I'm sure the intelligence agencies are doing their best but Abaaoud might've had time to destroy critical information before he was killed.

Well, he is enjoying his 72 year old virgin now.

Orchestrator, not mastermind.

By AA standards, this was not successful. I mean, it was just a bunch of people in an apartment, they had them surrounded, and they killed their target rather than arresting him. Champagne? For killing a mere orchestrator? Have French standards sunk that low?

Kill him, debase him, and run his loved ones out of the country and seize their assets. There must be a lesson for would be terrorists that they will not go down as a glorious martyr, but as a shameful fool who harmed those around him--and for those around him to have incentive to thwart his plans.

Rather than drop random bombs in the desert, I'd like to see us put more into infiltrating these people, tracking them and taking them out. They should have to constantly fear having nowhere to be safe, and to always be hunted.

B, I often disagree with you because you are too rational, calm, moderate and nice (and I am not), but this here is some talk I'm on board with.

This celebration of a Mastermind's death is exactly what the PR that ISIL wants for recruiting the sumbags it recruits as suicide killers. The Media just don't care.

That is The Professor's opinion and also Donald Trump's opinion. The strategic smart minded agree.

At least the strike on those tanker trucks was in a sense strategic.

-- A world that someone wasn't this evil they needed to be killed to stop them would be a better world; in that way, it does, in someway, diminish people. But, the diminishing because of the revelation we live in a world where evil people can only be stopped through severe means is... pretty minor compared to letting those evil people keep doing evil things.

That's true, but if we eliminate enough of them quickly enough the replacements will be less intelligent, less dedicated, and have far lower morale (as well as trust for their confederates). A constant barrage of assassinations and captures (leading the remaining ones to wonder what information has been turned up, and who among them they can trust anymore) will reduce them to a far less competent, dwindling band of thugs.

Look at the German army in WWII--sure, they kept replacing their shattered divisions, but they did so with young boys and old men, lacking the training, equipment and eagerness of those early troops. And eventually, the enemy will run out. There's only so many people you can convince to give up their lives (in, hopefully, a painful, horrifying and degrading way) and jeopardize their families before you get to the real dregs.

PB म्हणाले...

War is a game of numbers, attrition. As long as a few can have a 10x multipler (1 attacker dead vs 10 or more defenders dead, the act will be viewed as successful. Even if authorities find the one on the run or the "leader" of the small group, a positive feedback loop is established and others will be motivated to do something similar, aiming to achieve greater and greater multipliers.

The odds need to be switched so it take 100 attackers to get just one defender (or none), and establish a negative feedback loop. it's easier to go on the counter-attack and strike back harder, with greater tempo, and a willingness to continue until surrender is achieved.

Stopping short of surrender never ends the conflict. If they don't surrender, total and complete annihilation is required.

Kill three thousand and pretty soon they are either all gone or the ones that are a problem are gone and the rest give up. Bullets are cheap.

The problem for anybody arguing for less than a disproportionate, overwhelming and unwavering response is that either that -- or abject surrender -- are the only options.
(Metaphor alert)
As Islamic radicalism metastasizes, the military will have to remove more healthy flesh from the patient in order to get clean lines. The problem is caused by those who argue to wait. The blood will be on their hands too.

Derp म्हणाले...

The reality is that France is at war and this is probably a legitimate enemy action. We would have expected the same from the Germans or the Japanese, and while we would have executed any agents of either power (Italians probably would have surrendered as soon as they touched our soil) within days of catching them on our soil if they were out of uniform, we would not have considered them to have acted outside the "rules" of warfare. We would have hanged them, but it would not have been "personal."

How we got mixed up in Syria's internal affairs is the mystery I can't fathom. I thought we learned our lesson from Iraq.

While it's a pleasure to wake to news that that Belgian guy was taken out, I'm sick of the media referring to him as a "mastermind". Moriarty or Blofeld are masterminds. This guy plotted attacks that largely failed (none of the suicide bombers actually got into that stadium), and now he's DEAD. That doesn't exactly imply organizational brilliance.
Ringleader or plotter would suffice.

Been wondering that since around, oh, I dunno, 2001? The behavior of Western leaders sure looks like it could be plausibly explained as the product of subornation by Saudi money, doesn't it? Really peculiar how, since 2001, "our" leaders have moved from merely enthusiastically promoting and facilitating Islamisation of Western territories, to now being nastily coercive about it. While cack-handedly messing with just about every Muslim regime but the Saudis/Qataris.

If it was as easy as it seems to find and destroy this cell, why was it allowed to plan and execute its successful operation? Was it because Hollande knew about it but did not want to act because of the concerns of those to his left? Or was there a desire not to reveal intelligence capabilities like Churchill and Coventry? Whatever the reason, the successfulFrench raids lead me to believe that if we and our "allies" had the will (requires leadership) we could destroy ISIS in Europe and the ME.

Etienne म्हणाले...

It just goes to show what suspending the Constitution would do for America also. The French State of Emergency (a form of Martial Law) is a fantastic way to employ the millions of federal police agencies.

During an emergency, there is no time for freedom to exist. After the emergency is over, the citizens may be allowed to exercise their constitutional laws again.

Without the suspended Constitution, these guys would have escaped.

I would take the prisoners to the nearest Army base, and have them executed before the Constitution is re-started.

Right Ange. My error. Fascination of the trainwreck I suppose. If nothing else it's good to see how unhappy she is and how she's not going to get what she wants, whatever that could be as sorted from the word salad she spreads.

I would say that Bush appeared to be beginning to handle the problem. Quietly and discreetly, the only way it could be handled. Don't you remember how certain eminent Saudis were mysteriously disappearing, being found dead of exposure in the remote desert, being eaten by sharks, etc.? Not sure what put the brakes on it.

Derp म्हणाले...

wildswan म्हणाले...

I feel pretty sure the problem with terrorism is sorting out the wannabes from those who will act, that the wannabes create a huge cloud of "uninformation" around the real information. And Obama is probably preventing the development of the profile of the type of Moslem who will most likely act - because when he hears the word "profiling" his knee jerks and he bans it.

If Paris is a guide, then right now some of the people who are planning an attack on DC and NYC are known to law enforcement but only as names on a list, a very long list with no profiling attached. It's my understanding that the liberals don't want to live in a country where profiling is used and I guess they will get their wish right to the end. It's kind of fun to see the liberals getting borked in the colleges but this other is very sad and futile.
