"A German woman who vanished 31 years ago and had been registered as dead after a man confessed to her murder, has been found alive and well and living in Düsseldorf."

Petra Pazsitka "now admits she plotted her disappearance."
A spokesperson for [the police] said: "As to the motive of her disappearance, she gave no explanation and expressly said that she continues to want no contact with the public or her family."

Nothing in the article about the man who admitted guilt. How many years did he serve for his "crime"?

I know. I guess we're supposed to think he killed that other person, so he doesn't matter.

Pazsitka will now be required to register formally with the German authorities

Must keep track of everyone!

The man who confessed was already in prison for the rape and murder of a 14-year-old. He later retracted the confession for this case. He died in prison.

She must really dislike her family. What a horror they've been through.

Althouse has awakened the German in me. Went out for schnitzel and beer in Somerville over the weekend. The place was a lot of fun, the food was good, and the waitresses were all pretty.

Faking your death and allowing your family to believe you were murdered, all the while living in Dusseldorf.

Isn't there a German word for that?

Well, sure. It doesn't make much sense to keep looking for something once you've found it.

In Germany you are required to register and pay annual taxes on all your televisions and radios. Your cars are registered and taxed every year and each car has a registration book that provides you with a very short list of authorized replacement parts for that car (e.g. tires.
Every car must go through an intensive technical inspection every three years. If it doesn't pass it doesn't drive away.
Residents on a street are required by law to keep the road clean. You will often see people with brooms sweeping their side of the road.
Nationwide noise ordinances on Sunday. Better mow your lawn Saturday.

Having her slip through this massive omnipresent bureaucracy must've been a huge blow to the system.

Titus says GOne Girl; my first thought was Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

Extinct species, and, apparently, extinct people, are routinely discovered. Soon, there will be a hash tag lamenting disappearing babies, which are rediscovered in Gosnell clinic toilets, Planned Parenthood corporate offices, and client stables.

I'd say this is quite an achievement in itself. In today's world, to be able to drop out, to "Go Galt" like that in such a heavily regulated society as Germany is a real accomplishment. My congratulations to her!
