Are you allowed to express the opinion that gay relationships are by their very nature more volatile and transient than heterosexual relationships? Think of two Popsicle sticks stuck together versus a dove tailed joint......Why is anything positive you say about gays considered sociology and anything negative is homophobia.

Here is a real-world real-time lesson in how companies should avoid current events in a marketing campaign, and should be especially cautious about social issues on which there is no general consensus. Note all the major corporations telling Planned Parenthood to take their logos off the PP Web site this week. Those companies never gave PP permission BUT they also weren't controlling where their intellectual property was being employed and that has caused them some grief this week.

That example is germane for another reason: You never see national advertising that plays on the abortion issue at all, not even for "edgy" products that like shock value in their advertising (body sprays, clothing, energy drinks, Web domain sellers) but for some reason, there are a lot of companies working gay themes into their advertising. And a lot of people just aren't accepting of the new "institution" of gay marriage, are uneasy about the societal change forced upon us by force of government, setting up a clash of long-held rights for religious freedom and a new attempt to define anything gay as a "civil right" that also must be defended. We are 42 years past Roe and still the public is torn on how to define when, where and what kind of abortion is right or wrong. It would be toxic to a corporation to take "sides" on abortion and feature happy participants in it through their advertising. But the same is not true for gays and marriage and as a marketing professional I am taking notes and watching closely to see what transpires over the next few years.

And before the flame-throwing leftists come out and cite anything I write as discriminatory or racist let me acknowledge something that has transpired on this site in the past. A lot of us, like Althouse, have gay relatives and friends. We've acknowledged that fact. Someone, maybe Ann, wrote that everybody knows somebody who is gay. We are almost universally happy that our friends and relatives live in a society that is more accepting of them. I think Americans were always personally tolerant of gays, even if laws made local and state governments officially anti-gay in many places. In the same way Conservatives and Libertarians are almost universally tolerant in their personal lives. I have gay friends. Most of them voted against gay marriage here in California, just like I did. But it didn't change how we felt about each other or other issues. But California ain't Kansas. And I think companies that jump on the "yay it's Gay" bandwagon and celebrate that issue may alienate some of their loyal customers.

Soon, like having black and white actors share a Coke in a commercial, the gay thing will be something that is routine. I can't tell when that time will arrive, and obviously some high-priced marketing talent has already decided the time is nigh, but I think now is too soon because of the unsettled nature of things in the present. If there is NOT a backlash against religion and a wholesale railroading of churches into performing gay weddings, forcing bakers into catering gay weddings etc., then the time will come soon. If the SJWs continue to be the public voice of Gay America then there is more turmoil ahead and any advertising campaign that has set a brand on one side or the other could be in for trouble.

You are allowed, yes. Other people can say you are wrong, based on facts.

It's my opinion that... followed by a false statement serves only to make a person look ridiculous. Yet that person might think they're just voicing an opinion.

My favorite ad in this whole social issues vibe was the "Android: And You" spot featuring Andrew W.K.'s "Party Hard." It's a bunch of short clips of people doing their thing, which is very appropriate for the music. What's hilarious is one of the clips is a gay marriage proposal, while at least two others star people who are clearly Muslim. Apparently the marketing folks were so caught up in the diversity aspect that they didn't realize that one group wants to kill the other group.

@richard McEnroe: I'm not a gay marriage supporter and I don't dispute the underlying premise of your comment (the "shut up" tactic) but really this sad situation of narcissistic parents isn't at all unique to homosexual couples. It's all too common for parents to put their own needs ahead of the kids.

They really shouldn't have used their kids as propaganda for their cause though, so there is that in addition to now having their split made public.

People shouldn't comment on other people's breakups. Sometimes the couples get back together and then you don't want a bunch of baggage out there publicly.

Yes, I understand that in some way they became public figures, but they are still individuals and this should be private. They really only became public figures at all because of our society's current controversies.

Also, there are children involved. Less said the better.

Jane - given the ages of the foster or adoptive parents, these are probably three sisters that needed to be kept together. It is not easy to find such placements.

Which is why I think people should lay off now. If the kids are coming out of one broken home already, holding as much stability together as possible for them should be the first priority of any decent human being.

Nikon used them because they hit all the diversity buttons, and of course these are five very photogenic people! But this is the wrong side of that, and for these children, it could work out very, very badly.

There's a reason Christians are told not to gossip.

Jane - they are in fact Kordale's children. He had three children by one girlfriend:
