Word of the year: "vape."

Says Oxford Dictionaries.

"Vape" beat out "bae," "budtender," "contactless," "indyref," "normcore," "slacktivism."

That was the best we had this year? Sad!

I guess "gruber" came too late...

As in feminists get the vapors?

Gruber - (verb): accidentally telling the truth.

I could be wrong, but I think Greg Gutfeld came up with that?

garage mahal म्हणाले...

Not Gruber? He was robbed. We were robbed. The country was robbed. :(

'I guess "gruber" came too late...'

Too late for word of the year? Too late period.

Gruber has broken the big rule like the rule against professional magicians telling the rubes how the tricks are done.

And now Gruber has ended his usefulness in the special "Professor who tells us the truth act" that came out of the early 1950 ScFi movies and was easily used to capture the gullible as reality since the 1980s.

Word of the year "Shirt."

Who cares about finding organic molecules on a comet ? Shirt, shirt, shirt !

Oh, and Shorts !

George M. Spencer म्हणाले...

Another late entry would be "to cosby" as in "Obama really cosbied America, didn't he?" or "Dylan's complete Basement Tapes for $119.88? What a cosby!"

traditionalguy म्हणाले...

What ORGANIC MOLECULES were found on a comet? Is that wishful thinking for the gullible?

Of all the words you presented, "vape" is the only one I have seen used by an actual, non-cyberspace occupying, being.

Used in a sentence "Despite the fact that vaping has helped many to quick smoking, the State of Vermont plans to impose a tax on it to recapture some of the revenue lost to those quitters."

And what was the word everyone wanted banned?

Oh yeah, feminist.

garage mahal म्हणाले...

I dramatically vape and exhale "Gruuuuuber", enveloping my enemies in a cloud of pineapple-kiwi smoke.

"What ORGANIC MOLECULES were found on a comet? Is that wishful thinking for the gullible?"

Yup. nothing to see here.

However, COSAC was able to 'sniff' the atmosphere and detect the first organic molecules after landing. Analysis of the spectra and the identification of the molecules are continuing.

OK, so I really am officially out of it (using the phrase "out of it" just reinforces the conclusion). I had heard/read none of those words. I do agree that "vape" is the only one on the list that's useful -- although I'd prefer that like "smoke" it become obsolete as soon as possible -- or "ASAP" as the old-timers used to say. I may have heard "bae", and thought it was "bi", as in bisexual. This could be a source of confusion and perhaps some bad first dates (nobody "dates" anymore do they? Just "hook up", and then accuse each other of rape). I came close on "budtender", which I thought meant a bartender who served only beer. I thought "contactless" meant a lawyer who was unsuccessful as a "rain maker". I gues that fact that it's the Oxford (as in England) dictionary that accounts for the acceptance of "indyref", which seems to be a "one and done" word. As for "normcore", I thought he was a character on "Cheers". "Slacktivism" might be useful, although "PC" seems to cover the same ground.

By the way, "vape" is a much better term for it than "juicing" which just brings to mind brown tobacco juice dribbling down the user's lip.

tim in vermont म्हणाले...

Nicotine has a lot of benefits for its users. It is a way of self medicating for anxiety and stress, weight control, etc.

If there is a safe way to deliver it, why not? What are we now, a nation of prudes? Oh, wait...

MayBee म्हणाले...

"Vape" is the word of the year, and vaping is the new habit of the year.

अनामित म्हणाले...

Can "vape-vape", "date vape" and "vape culture" be far behind?

I must have heard vape sometimes since I know what it means, without looking it up. But I haven't ever heard anyone use it.

Bae, has been used by my 12 year old daughter for some time. I assumed it was just a cutesy way of saying baby but I have come to know that she means it as Before All Else and is pronounced like bay.

Virtual Rape? Sort of like the kind of rape that happens when those dirty peasant men speak to you without permission?

AlanKH म्हणाले...

Bae? Is that Gaelic or something?

AlanKH म्हणाले...

Budtender (n): A bartender who serves only Anheuser–Busch products.

I'm not an early adopter. Just started realizing the captivating qualities of last year's word, 'selfie.'

I nominate dox for 2015.

The only one I've even heard of is slacktivism
