"William O’Reilly Debated Jon Stewart On One Topic — White Privilege. Guess who won?"

Asked The Crack Emcee in the comments to yesterday's race-consciousness post, pointing to a "Daily Show" interview from a couple days ago, which I happened to have already watched. (I watched the show version. He links to the extended version, which I haven't seen.)

I answered (in the comments just now):
Yeah, I watched that yesterday. Thanks for reminding me about that. I thought Stewart acted like a jackass bully and O'Reilly kept his cool. Stewart had his whole audience braying their pleasure at the bullying of O'Reilly. To this home-viewer, O'Reilly won. He won by keeping his dignity, acknowledging all the factual and fair points about race in history, but rejecting the ideological term "white privilege."
As I just said, I did not watch the extended version. I'm going on what the show's people decided would be most amusing to their viewers, which I assume is what presents Jon Stewart as the winner and Bill O'Reilly as the bully who gets his comeuppance, overcome by the sheer force of superior intelligence, information, and virtue.

It's interesting to hear that the entire extended interview stays with the white-privilege topic, because that means:

1. They had a lot of raw footage from which to select the clips that fit the narrative they thought would be so gratifying to their audience of people who believe in their own superior intelligence, information, and virtue.

2. They never got around to the subject of the book O'Reilly had come on the show to pitch — "Killing Patton: The Strange Death of World War II's Most Audacious General" — another form of disrespect, which I suspect was deployed to antagonize O'Reilly and increase the likelihood that he'd say something stupid about race.

So, again: O'Reilly won. But what is this candy-ass bullshit about who won and lost a television interview? The name Patton has been invoked. Let's get some proportion and perspective about what winning means.

How has irrational emotionalism worked out for those who favor it, by the way?

Related only to Patton and the military today, I have to say that today's Army leaders need some of the risk taking and audacity of Patton infused into them.

also, not sure Patton had white privilege, he certainly had class privilege. His family had money, and married into more. I imagine OWSers would call him a dirty one percenter. I used to do some work for one of our neighbors who had been a tank commander in Patton's 3rd Army. He loved Patton, said it was the only time in his life that he felt 10 feet tall. I've been to the cemetary at Hamm. Moving experience.

Maybe Prof. Althouse should go on the Daily Show. There was an interesting discussion on Megan McArdle's blog the other day. McArdle advised that no one should ever appear on the show, because the format was so stacked against the guest. One of the commenters noted that John Yoo, a very smart lawyer, held his own, much to Stewart's frustration.

This would be a worthier use of Prof. Althouse's intelligence than blogging about idiots like Ezra Klein. Not because Stewart is smarter than Klein, but because it takes Yoo-level intelligence to overcome the skewed format.

What is candy-ass and stupid is believing that acknowledging "white privilege" is breaking some Gordian Knot allowing purity of thought and action to freely flow.

It should be obvious that the majority culture in all countries enjoys a "privilege" over the minority culture. That does not mean that the minority culture is not in the right nor that they are not or cannot be more successful as a culture than the majority. See Uganda and the ultimate diaspora of its highly successful Indian population. Amin booted them out, in part, because their success was intolerable.

O'Reilly is often a bore and a bully but he came off well in this "debate." Stewart is hideous and the professor's description of his smug buffoonery was on the mark.

O'Reilly was hyping his appearance on TDS on the Factor last night, and acted like he thought it was all in good fun. He certainly wasn't acting like he thought he "lost" or was mistreated.

Those two hosts now go back a long way, with each having gone on the others show multiple times. I think the two hosts offer each other safe passage through the lion's den with a chance to preach to an audience other than the usual converts.

In any case, when O'Reilly's got a new book to hawk, I think he'd show up to a convention of Communist zombies, much less TDS.

Isn't there anything, anything at all that says Black privilege? I can find a bunch of things that are Brown privilege that has made me a winner in this land of opportunity away from my familiar (and easy) life back home.

America has moved so far out into being a melting pot of all colors that it is ridiculous to be talking about White privilege. If you said something about that for Europe, I can buy it but not for America.

This is one place where Obama has truly failed. He could have made it better for the Blacks but he hasn't. It seems to have got worse with race being used as a political weapon.

America has moved on and generations of other immigrants have engulfed the country but Blacks and their enablers, the liberals are stuck in perpetual victimhood. The combination of those two are not working. Maybe we need a Black Republican president to bring harmony and restore optimism and confidence in Blacks, that is if they take the opportunity to break themselves from the past.

The Vagina as Fascist State does not stand against 'White Privilege', it stands inside it and has made it its own: it wears the skin like Ed Gein in a mask of (white) flesh on a moonlit evening. The goal of The Vagina as Fascist State is to keep minorities as THEIR minorities, not to improve their lives but to command their fealty.

The black women can be allowed to be a token third in command, but the top woman and her replacement will always be white: there is a reason why Jim Crow laws increased after the rise of the Suffragette Movement. The Vagina as Fascist State is infused by barely-repressed hysteria, and the privileged right-thinking white woman's fear of the black man is the same sexual kabuki as it was when she was the mistress of the plantation.

The fear of the minorities is their willingness to have sex to procreate: even after making abortion the natural progression of a pregnancy many minorities still choose to bear their children. This fertility is anathema to The Vagina as Fascist State, hence the The Vagina as Fascist State taking the reins of White Privilege to keep society within their desired boundaries.

Is it any surprise of the sexual nature found in HipHop and Rap? It is the reaction to The Vagina as Fascist State -- empowerment through anal sex and fellatio and taking non-procreative sex back on their own terms.

It seems that reality wins and politically correct delusions lose.

That is why the serious reality of Ebola has now exposed the politically correct delusions of fake leadership.

On one level, the new term "white privilege" serves as a loyalty oath for the left. Either you're in or you're out. Like global warming or climate change, belief means not only embracing a broad principle, but the entire gambit of politically correct policy prescriptions that emanate from the people foisting the litmus test.

We used to speak of advantage and disadvantage. Advantage implies differences in various accumulated endowments, whether cultural or wealth, that explain differences in potential. Privilege implies active exclusion and favoritism based on status.

Invoking "white privilege" also serves ideological and political purposes.

Principally, by continuing to ascribe disparate outcomes to exclusion and favoritism based specifically on race, rather than to relative deficits in the accumulation of cultural and wealth endowments over time, "white privilege" allows liberals to gloss-over the failure of their grand social experiments to provide the disadvantaged with greater cultural and income producing endowments during the last half century.

It is also meant to divide the electorate along racial lines, which the Democrats believe accrues to their advantage politically.

Stewart's audience consider themselves the überhippen -- ironic given the pathetic ignorance of that Northeastern urban hipster demographic which has been amply demonstrated by Jay Leno, Jesse Watters and others – so why would Bill O’Reilly go on The Daily Show? To hawk a book about George S. Patton? The percentile of TDS viewers who would even recognize the name, or know more than three facts about the war in which he fought has got to be in the single digits. That makes as much sense as advertising a CD edition of the Ring Cycle on BET. Here’s the reason: contractual obligation. Every time O’Reilly appears on TDS, Stewart is obliged to appear on O’Reilly.

Patton is an early example of the overweening power of the press, a power that has saddled us with the most incompetent and dishonest person to ever occupy the Executive Mansion. The press despised George Patton because he was a soldier’s soldier, and they loved Omar Bradley because he came across as folksy and nice, somebody uncomfortably shoehorned in the role of combat general who would rather be doing something else, like teaching mathematics in a small-town junior college. Patton seemed to love being a general, and the American press hated him for it. They did everything they could to undermine Patton and boost Bradley. Consequently, Eisenhower -- a man with one eye fixed on a post-war political career –- bowed to press pressure coming indirectly through the White House and tapped Bradley to command 12th Army Group, the largest and most power United States Army formation to ever take the field, leaving Patton as a mere subordinate commander with no role to play in the Normandy campaign except as a decoy.

Some people will say that Patton was a bad person, that he graved glory and had no regard for the common soldier. The facts speak differently. If you had the good fortune to serve as a tank crewman or as an infantry rifleman in Patton’s Third United States Army you enjoyed better odds of coming through the war unscathed than in any other U.S. combat land force that fought on the line in WWII. So what if Patton was bloodthirsty? That’s what a general should be. The Germans respected and feared Patton, and kept well clear of his forces when they were able. In the OKW’s order of battle documents the Third Army was known as Panzerarmee Patton, the only Allied force in Europe designated by its commander’s name, a high honor.

Flipper served with competency and distinction during the Apache Wars and the Victorio Campaign, but was haunted by rumors alleging improprieties. At one point, he was court martialed and dismissed from the US Army.

After losing his commission in the Army,...his descendants applied to the US military for a review of Flipper's court martial and dismissal. A review found the conviction and punishment were "unduly harsh and unjust" and recommended Flipper’s dismissal to be changed to a good conduct discharge. Shortly afterwards, an application for pardon was filed with the Secretary of the Army, which was forwarded to the Department of Justice. President Bill Clinton pardoned Lieutenant Henry O. The people you see doing those interviews all always have books. And they are not even really promoting those books. They are promoting their careers, bucking for advancement. The book is not the end in itself, the book is a means for career advancement, a ticket to go on shows like that.

Some of the books are probably real books, thoughts that needed to be worked out in long for to discover and express something the author sincerely wanted to say, but most of the books are functioning as calling cards, to get on the shows and to boost the author's career.

Thiat is something about which I truly do not care. Every day, I take conscious pleasure in that not caring.

The idea behind "white privilege" is that whites must as a group have achieved some great economic advantage from racial discrimination to have made it worthwhile to have imposed it for several centuries.

The cruel truth is that any economic advantage went not to whites as a group but to a few, and probably not as much as one might think.

Still, it isn't much of a defense that that the benefit gained was far less than the harm inflicted.

There is such a thing as "white privilege", and it manifests itself in subtle ways that are difficult to fix except by changing attitudes (of people in ALL races) over time. In fact, that sort of change is what has caused white privilege today to be a tiny fraction of what it once was (no one in their right mind would argue blacks had it easier fifty or a hundred years ago).

But race privilege is also greatly overshadowed by class privilege.

The camera was on Beck but I would have loved to see O'Reilly's face at that moment.

I emailed an invite to Jennifer Lawrence to have sex with me. She turned me down 'cause she was afraid she would never be satisfied with anyone else afterwards.

"Ann, you ignorant slut. Candy-ass? Like supporting Scott Walker's smile, over his policies, in one of the most segregated places in America? Oooh, you are so TOUGH for that - go kick a homeless person to make the point. And do it "like a man." Jesus"

Crack, you have truly become deranged by your bitterness. It is consuming the best of YOU! To criticize Althouse in this manner is disgusting.

Like Crack says, Wisconsin seems to be way too white. Maybe a good idea would be busing in a million black teens from the South Side of Chicago. That would boost the dreadful Scott Walker economy just from sky rocketing sales of 40 cal. ammo, and it would not be whites buying it.

I think of that as Repair-ations for that Jim Crow segregation you all did secretly.

Jon Leibowitz demonstrated bad faith at the beginning of the interview by telling O'Reilly that he (O'Reilly) was afraid. This is a favorite trick of the Progressives, to imply that Conservatives are controlled by their primitive rat brain.

All O'Reilly had to do to dominate, was refrain from shouting at Leibowitz.

Hey, Crack! Do you talk to your mom with that mouth? I would think that she would slap you into a puddle of chocolate pudding for using that kind of language with our hostess. I know my mom would if it were me...but, of course, it would be vanilla.

Michael sez:

I think it is kind of rude to slur our hostess , by the way, particularly since she has shown you exemplary courtesy by not calling attention to your deplorable manners and constant rudeness to her other guests.

The soft bigotry of low expectations.

Hey Crack. Glad you're having a good time in the comments section again but I need you to do something.
Could you shut the fuck up and get back to work? The (Mexican) butler tells me the pantry is running low on bacon-wrapped shrimp and the Van Vorhees' are coming over this weekend for the regatta.
You know how Chip and Buffy love their shrimp!
Apparently they are on sale today but only if we use tax money stolen from a hapless black. So if you could get to work for me, that'd be great. Thanks!

Cracked makes my point:

And two of them have made it clear it wasn't whites holding that door open.

Black people don't need Whitey to hold the door open!

HoodlumDoodlum বলেছেন...

I admit to finding it interesting how lauded the Buffalo Soldiers are by people who like to harp about the evil of white people's historical oppression...is it ok to attack peaceful natives for the benefit of an evil white nation just because the soldiers are black?

I am similarly puzzled as to why the pimp-a position that (arguably) most closely resembles a slavemaster-is/was seen as a prestigious profession within a similar community. Most cultures celebrate charismatic criminals (gangsters, desperados, etc) but I don't know if many lionize those who directly exploit and/or own others.

BOR loves going on liberal shows and getting attacked or having a debate. Its free publicity.

Limbaugh doesn't need the publicity that much, so he either stays off TV or does very few shows when he promotes a book.

The fact that people think Jon Stewart is "Witty" and "Smart" scares me.

Years ago, BOR complained and campaigned to get an NPR interview to promote a new book. NPR finally gave in and Gross conducted an insulting interview which lead to BOR walking out. Lots of controversy.

Mission accomplished.

No - I just pulled "Jane, you ridiculous slut" out of the air - and Dan Akroyd didn't make the phrase famous. Please. I know Ann's not that stupid, even if you are.

"The hostess answered your question in a way that made you look stupid. You couldn't take it."

Made me look stupid? In front of you? When I don't agree with any position you take - because the facts are NEVER on your side? Like now?

The only thing that might make me feel stupid is if y'all was actually correct about anything, ever. Let's count the ways:

Y'all say Ann keeps me here to boost ratings. Your evidence?

Nothing.

Y'all say Ann keeps me here because she feels white guilt. Your evidence?

Nothing.

Y'all say Ann keeps me here [fill in the blank]. Your evidence?

Whatever the charge - Nothing.

You just make up shit and convince yourselves it's true - which now includes Ann speaking in a way I "couldn't take" because her racist commenters might make up something new from it. And your evidence?

Nothing.

"I don't recall having many privileges as in special benefits that black people didn't have but I sure can think of advantages they didn't have."

What kind of "special benefits" are you talking about?

Being able to use the facilities your taxes went into isn't "special benefits that black people didn't have"?

Being able to generationally accumulate wealth - from not having it stolen in a billion ways - isn't "special benefits that black people didn't have"?

To expect not to be hung isn't "special benefits that black people didn't have"?

If your parents used the GI Bill to buy a house, wasn't that "special benefits that black people didn't have"?

I know you're thinking about this all wrong,...

I like the idea Ann made me look stupid when she was only answering the question "Guess who won?" (LOTS to work with there) and didn't substantively address anything that was said. All she did was CLAIM O'Reilly was "acknowledging all the factual and fair points about race in history" without mentioning a single one that happened with. Oh wait - she couldn't:

BECAUSE SHE WASN'T EVEN COMMENTING ON THE WHOLE INTERVIEW BUT THE EDITED ONE FOR TV - SO SHE DOESN'T EVEN KNOW WHAT HAPPENED.

That's how smart people critique things - without seeing them.

And we know smart people know "all the factual and fair points about race in history" when they don't mention what's so factual or fair about them.

And their supporters - who are crowing over her quite-evident ignorance - are obviously so much smarter than she or I,...

Yeah, I saw the Yoo interview. I love me a good Jon Stewart takedown (e.g. Jim Cramer, Stuart Varney), but I nevertheless found myself oddly pleased that Yoo teaches at my alma mater. Stewart was a good sport about it, too, saying, "It was like interviewing sand." For his part Yoo commented that he was used to settling down unruly college students who hadn't done the reading.
