[Walker's] goal is to rally his base, appear strong and friendly while not coming off as condescending against a first-time candidate for state office....The debate is at 7 Central Time tonight. I'll be live-blogging.
[Burke's] aim is to make a good first impression and show that she's up to the task of being governor.... She'll also need to effectively deal with the issue that has bedeviled her in recent weeks: the disclosure that her jobs plan included passages lifted from other Democratic candidates.

"What Walker needs to do.... What Burke needs to do...." at tonight's debate.

As long as Burke doesn't drool or belch, I don't see how she can be WORSE than expected.

YouGov has it 49-48, Mary Burke.
Gonna be close!
Burke is not what one would describe as a policy wonk. Walker is likely to go deep and into details to expose the shallow Ms. Burke.

It's somewhat odd that the guy who didn't graduate from college and -- to me at least -- looks kind of like Gomer Pyle has to worry about coming off as "condescending" to a Harvard MBA who inherited her father's business. Usually those would be flipped.
This is going to be entertaining as hell. Are any sites livesatreaming this?
Mid-western folks seem to have a rule to never look down on anyone. And the Madison elite socialists cannot figure out how Walker does it.
But Burke has assumed a humble attitude. She understands her old Wisconsin farm roots.
Walker has to tread lightly tonight.
It looks like the short question / rebuttal format is likely to little further than talking points.
Not expecting much from either except memorized talking points.
What Burke needs to do is use Walker's racist staff (along with his other unsavory friends) to wipe that smile off his face, and make him get serious, so he reveals the wolf-in-sheep's-clothing Goldwater clone he is. That's the issue:
Anything less is window dressing,...
good first impression? did the campaign just start this week?
Rally his base? his base is already voting for him. He needs to make the case that his policies have worked for a majority of Wisconsinites
Do these people actually get paid for writing this drivel?
The goal of Burke in the debate is to "make a good impression", handle a simple complaint that is weeks old in an acceptable manner, and make talking points likely lifted from other Democrats appear well-delivered?
I used to think debates were about debating ideas, and moderators were there to ensure that took place.
What they have to do is calibrated to appeal to women at their nonsensical best.

Do you imagine that most people in WI have been following the race this past Glorious Summer?
The dab ate is going to be on C-Span.

Do you imagine, less than 4 weeks from the election, that most people in Wisconsin don't know anything about election and who is running? In a state that has seen an election, recall election, and.... eh, you might be right, after all that if I was a Wisconsinite, I might have cancelled my newspaper subscription and cut the cord to my TV too.
YouGov has Scotland splitting, 51-49. Gonna be close!
This election will be about turnout (and votes in car trunks) Garage is ready

And fire don't melt steel!
Marquette had a poll recently, "garage mahal". What were the results of that non-partisan (I make myself laugh!) university poll?
Tell me again why you pimp the YouGov nonsense. Never mind. I know you do so because you believe based on experience that if the the election is within the margin of cheating Leftists will win.
"At my challenge, by the ancient laws of combat, we are met at this chosen ground, to settle for good and all who holds sway... Ears and noses will be the trophies of the day. "
I take it asking Burke if she voted for Obama would not work in Wisconsin.
#It's complicated.
After Burke answers her first question, walker looks at her and asks, "which person did you steal that response from?"
I have Madison fatigue.
Do you imagine that most people in WI have been following the race this past Glorious Summer?
Wisconsin is the Land of 10,000 Gubernatorial Elections.
As is always the case with male/female contests, Walker has to be careful not to appear bullying. Burke has to appear tough but not shrill.
In both cases it's the sexist double standards at work, but they have to play within those rules, unfortunately.
”Wisconsin's Governor Cannot Hide His Contempt for Women and the Poor”
But he smiles, which apparently changes everything,...
From Crack's link:
According to projections, he may very well beat Democrat Mary Burke and further his agenda to turn the previously left-leaning Wisconsin into one of the most conservative states in the nation.
"Projection" is all it is.
The debate format looks like a talking points snooze-fest. Too bad.
chickelit,
""Projection" is all it is."
Sure is - or is Romney president now like he was projected he'd be?
Jesus, what a short memory you have,...

Walker vs. Burke: Wisconsin's first 2014 gubernatorial debate
"The debate format looks like a talking points snooze-fest. Too bad."
Agreed. I favor five ten minute segments, each on one issue, plus ten minutes of asking each other questions.
Then leg wrestling.
@Crack: You know about as much about Wisconsin and Wisconsin politics as I know about Watts. Nothing you've ever said about Wisconsin or its politics has ever had credibility. It's all just lies and projection.

Marquette’s poll has become the gold standard of Wisconsin polling, outperforming others in the 2010 and 2012 elections. Follow the trend of the Marquette poll and it points to a Walker win. In Marquette’s five polls of registered voters, Burke climbed from 45 percent to 49 percent in late August but she dropped in each of the last two polls and now she’s back down to 45 percent. Walker, meanwhile, has climbed steadily from 46 percent in mid-July to 50 percent in late September.
Here’s another trend to follow: Walker’s ballot box successes keep growing. Walker won the 2010 election by 5.8 points. In the 2012 recall, he won by 6.8 points. In the 2012 state legislative races, Walker’s party took back the state Senate and expanded its majority in the state House of Representatives. - Timothy Carney
"I come from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, a city with a lot of issues, a lot of issues. Fifty-five percent black male unemployment. Truancy rate of sixty percent -- sixty percent of students in the Milwaukee Public Schools system do not attend school regularly. They only graduate fifty percent of the students that do, and when they come out of there the diploma is not worth the paper that it's written on, and they probably can't even read it. We have the worst fourth- and eighth-grade reading scores in the nation. We lead in infant mortality rate and I could go on and on and on."
