"... either because we don’t think it’s important or because we get so discouraged about what’s happening in Washington that we think it’s not worth our while."
But in a presidential election year, Democrats "do pretty well," because "[s]uddenly a more representative cross section of America gets out there."

So all of presidential electoral history boils down to his own elections. Figures.
This looks like a job for ... Silverman!
Sounds like he wants to do away with midterm elections since the electorate for those elections isn't representative of anything, really.
Ack.
Not a student of history it appears
Welcome to the Barack Obama Presidential Lair in Durango, Colorado. Here you can learn how President Obama's candidacies electrified the races and swept Democrats to victories, only to be stunned by low-turnout mid-term elections when Barack Obama was not on the ticket.
After President Obama left office, scholars realized that he was a necessary ingredient to continued leftist success. That's why the Lair dedicates nearly 9% of its funding toward new candidates that have at least a tiny fraction of the former President's charisma.
The appeal of Barack Obama is an intensely personal one. It's not that people support his policy preferences or ideology. If you asked one of his supporters why they voted for him, no doubt they would be able to point to a policy of his they support. In reality, this is an after the fact rational justification for an entirely emotional reaction. Much like JFK, Obama is an avatar of America as they would like it to be. Mixed race, egalitarian, successful, attractive, with a family. He is the first black president, he is living, breathing symbol of America's triumph over racism, tribalism, etc. None of that has to be factually true, but as emotional truth, it is powerful stuff. That is why he was able to drive millions of minority voters to the polls when he was personally on the ballot. But it is a double edged sword, that emotional connection does not extend to your average no-name congressional candidate in a midterm election. That is why the Democrats are going to be clobbered this November.
setting expectations
Such an intellect!
Another version of, "It's not my fault."
Worthless.
I had the same thought as Drill: They are lowering expectations.
Can they lower them enough?
Isn't it more likely that in national elections, the leftist press has more power to swing the election than in localized midterm elections?
I'll bet that voter ID would eliminate the discrepancy between the mid-terms, and the presidential elections.
Maybe they should try to lower our expectations so we don't expect a minimally competent govt.
mad
I think you're wrong there. Lot's of low info voters, or relatively unengaged voters, come out for the Presidential elections, but stay home for local elections.
I'm not saying that dead and illegal voters are not a problem.
With all the dysfunction in Washington and problems abroad, at least Obama can be depended on to continue fund raising and hobnobbing with celebrities.
I'll bet that voter ID would eliminate the discrepancy between the mid-terms, and the presidential elections.
Democrats only cheat in Presidential years?
Much like JFK, Obama is an avatar of America as they would like it to be.
I was 13 when JFK was assasinated. His widow promoted the idea that JFK was somehow a martyr, and the press supported the idea, but since he was murdered by a communist, what could he have been a martyr for? Fighting Communism?
The grapes were sour anyway.
I was thinking yesterday, if the Democrats wanted to scare the bejeesus out of the Rs, they'd somehow increase the turnout during midterms.
Nice subtle brag. It's all about him.
Blah, blah, blah.
Only one election to fake it through?
That would be another way to look at it.
@ Crack:

That's why the black man is wooing the wimmins, especially the white ones.
Obama Targets Women’s Vote Ahead of Midterms
Female voters are a typical go-to constituency for Democrats and the Obama team. Recall the focus on women during the 2012 campaign. The parties accused each other of perpetuating a “war on women” and Mr. Obama made female voters central to his re-election strategy. But after the election the female-focus quieted. Now, with control of the Senate up for grabs this November, it’s back.
Screw 'em and forget 'em, now it's time for booty call!!
A Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll released Tuesday shows the president has few bright spots when looking at the current electorate. His approval rating has dropped to 41%, according to the poll. But among women it’s slightly higher, with 44% approving of the job Mr. Obama is doing.
But women strongly want a Democratic Congress, the poll showed. Forty-eight percent of women want a Democratic-controlled Congress, compared with 37% who want a Republican Congress.
So in some ways, support from women is a bulwark for Democrats against a GOP tide this November.
So, keep promising the women something, and hopefully they will "give it up".
That's why the black man is wooing the wimmins, especially the white ones.
Obvious link.
I guess 1980 never happened.
Once you go black, you never go back. Or so I've heard.
But women strongly want a Democratic Congress, the poll showed. Forty-eight percent of women want a Democratic-controlled Congress, compared with 37% who want a Republican Congress.
48% == strongly want
That's a bit of a stretch.
Sure, Obama, go ahead and reinforce the lazy minority stereotype.
Again with the "My tribe is superior to your tribe" crap. Non of that "I'm the President of all Americans" nonsense for this guy.
"[s]uddenly a more representative cross section of America gets out there."
That's why Prop 8 won in California in 2008.

White people like to forget their role in shit. They never want to be like fire investigators and see what started it. They just look at the result and say "What a mess."
I'm sure Obama will be happy to become "President of all Americans" as soon as you - and the "black man is wooing the wimmins, especially the white ones" crowd - decide you want to be regarded as part of "all Americans" yourselves.
Until then, you get what you're looking for,...
Explaining away reality with lies.
What Obama does best.
Too bad we can't give him another 4 years.
If Obama is already admitting the Dems stand to lose big in the upcoming mid-term elections (through no fault of his own, of course), this is somewhat surprising since we know he has long expected the Dems would take full control of Congress during his final two years in office, thus providing him with the opportunity to radically transform America beyond all recognition.
Success for Dems in 14 is beginning to look a lot like a veto proof minority.

What do you think the odds are that Dirty Harry wrangles a rule change on November 5th regarding filibusters and cloture?
Poor Crack. Poor, poor Crack. It must be tough to live in 1863 when the calendar stubbornly says 2013.
President Obama complained Thursday that Democrats “get clobbered” in midterm elections
That simply hasn't been true historically (see, for instance 2006), but history only began in2008 so that's okay.
And if the Democrats know they're going to tank in 14' Why are they sending me so many Emails trying to get me to contribute?
Democrats get clobbered in mid-term elections and do well in the Presidential ones because in the mid-term elections there's a higher percentage of people who care about what's going on and are paying attention, whereas the Presidential election is more of a beauty contest.
Oops. My calendar does say 2014.

Which is better than being enslaved, so I'll take it,...
Wither Obama is right or wrong is immaterial.
The Democrats WILL be clobbered this Nov.
Only question is, by how much?
I'm hoping for a super majority of Republicans in BOTH HOUSES.
Then if Obama does not behave.. impeach him.
Isn't it more likely that in national elections, the leftist press has more power to swing the election than in localized midterm elections?
Yes. And...
I'll bet that voter ID would eliminate the discrepancy between the mid-terms, and the presidential elections
Those two statements explain the discrepancy entirely. Midterm elections are local, so snowbirds can't vote in the North and the South, college students can't vote at school and at home, and people aren't carpet bombed with early voting efforts and absentee ballots.
In other words, more Dems than Repubs are disinterested or low-information voters.
My calendar stubbornly says 2014. Bad, calendar, bad! Conform to expectations, or else.
Say whatever else you want about them, but those bitter clingers at least vote.
