Howard Stern's seductive questioning style lures a woman into forfeiting $375,000.

Listen to the audio of Stern questioning Oksana Grigorieva, a woman who took a big settlement from Mel Gibson on the condition that she never talk about him in public. You can hear that she's trying not to say anything, that she's careful when she finally says something to make it so minimal that it's arguably — at least to her — nothing.

It must have been rough for Grigorieva to keep entirely to herself. Whatever happened to her incipient stardom, stardom that is the birthright of such an amazing beauty? If that's the thinking, how pathetically desperate to succumb to an invitation to go on the radio, where the advantage goes to a mind that can put words together and deploy them in a beautiful voice. Grigorieva entered Howard Stern's enclosing, comforting environment. She would not have to say anything she did not want to say — presumably she was assured — but once she was ensconced in his lair, she was so vulnerable.

Listen to that audio. She has $375,000 to lose and it's an intriguing game to him, a game he's played thousands of times. Listen to him empathize with her, then wait, then empathize more. The man is a master — a dear, sweet kind evil master.

She only murmurs a few words, but the judge rules against her. She agreed to say nothing. No means no, and nothing means nothing. $375,000 lost.

One more time, the man with the ultimate face-for-radio ugliness scores with a woman.

AND: Meade read this and said: "She can say whatever she wants now."

If she hadn't rejected Gibson's initial offer of $15 million she'd have no reason to be complaining.

It's not $375,000 lost. It goes to a different pocket, is all.

chickelit বলেছেন...

I have never gotten Howard Stern's appeal at any level. I've argued with very good friends about him to the point of just having to shut up. Some will defend him to no end.

SGT Ted বলেছেন...

She wasn't "vulnerable". She's a calculating fame whore.

She also thinks she is smarter than others, which is how she scammed 375,000 and then lost it by running her mouth on a radio program she didn't have to appear on about a subject she could have made off limits as a pre-condition to be interviewed.

When women are stupid, we need to sue the correct term: Stupid. Not feminized, victim language portraying her as "vulnerable".

missred বলেছেন...

I agree with every word SGT Ted wrote.
Her quest for fame led her to make the incredibly stupid decision to appear on the radio. Her first stupid decision was to become pregnant with Mel's baby thinking it would bring her riches and fame.

kjbe বলেছেন...

She has an insatious need to be liked and he, a grand manipulator. She never had a chance.

Ann Althouse বলেছেন...

Presumably, she can get more money by publishing a tell-all memoir, but I'm going to assume that the settlement agreement has penalties for that, with the money going to him.

I used to watch Howard Stern's radio show as it was presented on Howard TV (a premium cable option), and I'm very familiar with how the environment there works and why it works on women and various celebrities. He's a great conversationalist, great at getting people to relax and open up.

If you don't get his appeal, I suspect you are basing your opinion on very little understanding of the show. Maybe you know about some of the early "shock jock" things he did on AM radio.

I realize you are hypothesizing that she is thinking that, however while she is quite attractive, by Hollywood film standards? Not really amazing.

Speaking for myself, yes, I formed my opinions of Stern very early. Are you suggesting that I catch up now? What is the newer more highly evolved level of entertainment?

except of course, she was due the second half (e.g $375k) of a $750k settlement from Gibson, that she now doesn't get.

the $375k sits in Mel's account...

"No, Ann, she was stupid to walk in there."

I didn't say she wasn't stupid to walk in there.

I said once she was in there, she was in an environment that she could not deal with very well, in the hands of a master.

It's like the position of a person who decides to speak to the police. They don't understand the game and the experts who are playing with them and they don't have experience with the coercive nature of the environment. They believe they can handle themselves and they don't see their mistakes as they make them, and then it's too late.

Don't start.

Stupid is as stupid does. Had she been smart she would have had the $15mm plus she may have gotten him to pay the taxes on the money and would have received $15mm net. $15mm @ 5% a year = $750,00 per year excluding child support. Dumb broad indeed.

tim maguire বলেছেন...

He offered 15 million, what did she counter with that they settled on 750 thousand? I thought only homer simpson negotiated like that.

William বলেছেন...

I listened to Howard Stern when he first came on in the eighties. He was a breath of fresh air. I particularly admired the way he lambasted celebrities who left their first wives to pick up on fashion models. He might engage in such things as lesbian dials date, but he was a better man than his critics because he was a good family man who remained faithful, despite all temptation, to his wife.

Humperdink বলেছেন...

@chickenlittle. I'm with you, I could never understand the appeal of Stern.

Shock jock? Controversial? None of those things - just smut. I recall his fans calling CSPAN and uttering vile statements to the bewildered host. Classless.

Ann Althouse বলেছেন...

You have to listen to some of the extended interviews with celebrities to know what I'm talking about.

I realize that there are other things he does that are awful, and I don't like them either.

Ann Althouse বলেছেন...

Here, for example, is Howard interviewing Paul McCartney.

Humperdink বলেছেন...

Ann, I do not doubt you are correct. I am sure he has executed some great celebrity interviews. But with so many other choices, Stern is not on the top of my list. Actually not on the list.

Appearing before judge for his 8th DUI arrest, the defendant pleaded with the judge: "Judge, you should see how well I drive when I am sober". That's my view of Stern.

@Titus: First, thanks again for the "Lenny's Inferno" link last week. I'm still mulling doing a chirbit remake of "The Voice In The Box" which you reminded me of.

The first time I saw Nugent was amidst writhing sweating bodies; I wrote it up here

Howard is a talented interviewer. He has said some interesting things in the past and while I understand he got mugged by the Bush FCC, I find his current predisposition towards being a typical limousine liberal boring.

Bill Peschel বলেছেন...

I'll have to look for the Paul McCartney interview, Ann. Like chickenlittle, I only knew Stern by his rep. He might still be a slimy guy, but I heard his interviews with GaGa and Billy Joel, and they were fabulous. He got them to open up, and they felt comfortable with revealing themselves, and there wasn't a "gotcha" in the house.

Seriously, readers, if you're at all interested in finding out more about them, check out the interviews.

(Which reminded me of some of the great interviews Bob Costas did back in the day on late-night TV. He did one with Mel Brooks that lasted three nights and ended with both of them wearing nothing but togas for reasons I've forgotten. Respected then, clown today. So sad.)

Revenant বলেছেন...

What the heck was she planning to talk about, if not her relationship with Mel Gibson?

Rosalyn C. বলেছেন...

I thought she sounded like she didn't want to say anything, but also she didn't want to be rude to Stern. I don't know if it was his seductive questioning style or the fact that he has become such a big deal. Look at the party he had for his 60th birthday and who showed up. I didn't realize he was that important. So she went along with him, sort of laughed, made general philosophical statements and I don't think she realized that all of that put together was her talking about Gibson. It's not like she actually said anything directly about him but the totality of it was he was bad experience she overcame. LOL.
I wonder if Stern will honor his promise to support her now, no matter what?

Dr. Kenneth Noisewater বলেছেন...

I used to listen to Stern starting with WNNNNNNNNNNNNNNBC through 2000 or thereabouts. At the end, the show had gone on with one too many stripper game shows or something equally overdone and he had some caller on who complained, and he was all like "If you don't like it, stop listening!" so I did. The Stern Gang was a formative part of my adolescence, and left its mark on my funny bone ever since, but I can't be arsed to listen to him now even though I've got Sirius. I will fire up youtube 'videos' of Billy West as Marge Schott though as that will still get me laughing to the point of suffocation.

Speaking of underage sex... one of the funniest Stern episodes I remember was when Bill Mumy from "Lost in Space" came on the Stern Show, and Billy West kept taunting him sexually in the voice of Dr. Smith.

Classic.

Billy Mumy on Howard Stern (90 second excerpt).

The Billy Mumy thing was v. funny… and I didn't even watch "Lost in Space" so I only vaguely got the references.

Jum বলেছেন...

Is there any way for both of these loathsome, vile creatures to somehow immediately disappear forever from the American scene and our collective memory?

DWPittelli বলেছেন...

I listened a half-dozen times to Howard Stern on FM, about 20 years ago. It seemed all he did was brag about how great he was, how everyone else in showbiz was a loser, and how he's looking (right now!) at some woman's ass or breasts as he ponders the most degrading way to describe them. Not my cup of tea.

Nancy Reyes বলেছেন...

Can you say "celebrity stalker"?

Before she stalked Gibson, she had a "relationship" with Timothy Dalton, including a son...

She was already in her late 30's when she ensnared Gibson...

Unknown বলেছেন...

When he's not tossing cold cuts onto some stripper's bum cheeks, Howard Stern is THE absolute best interviewer of our generation. He asks the most interesting questions and, as Anne said, gets people to open up.

Unknown বলেছেন...

Sorry, meant to say quivering bum cheeks. My bad.
