Floored...

... by floor details. I was surprised by the all-wood vent...

They did a beautiful job. Congrats on your new floor! And out of curiosity: do the dogs ever use that spiral staircase? Most dogs I know are instinctively petrified of backless stairs, and I've had to specifically train my shepherd to use them.

That is a really lovely way to handle the vents, they're usually such an eyesore. Can it be opened and closed, or is it immovable?

The vents look very nice, but I'm going to have to seriously question whether or not there is enough actual square inches of opening to allow for adequate air flow.

Yes, but, a "spiral staircase" is not really a spiral- it's a helix.

And the "all wood" floor register is only all-wood where you can see it.

But, it all does look very nice. At least as long as no one falls down the rabbit hole, umm, I mean the staircase.

Wow - very nice detail work. That will be a wonderful space when finished. Congrats!

I loved the all-wood vent that our installers used in our floor, too. Such a cool touch, don't you think?

Very nice. However, if it were me, I would have.........

Are you sure it is wood? They make a lot of vinyl with a wood look.

@Fleet I sure am. Here, you can see how it looked before they did the finish.

Nice! Love the all wood vent. The floor is gorgeous, any plans for area rugs?

And to think you almost sold your house a few years ago and moved into a condo!

I like the flush vents... much better than the ones that bulge a 1/2" above floor level. (And vinyl that looks like wood doesn't look much like wood.)

Nice touch handling the end cuts around the staircase (stairhole?).

From the email:

"Prof. Althouse, Having actually installed hardwood floors myself, I had to comment on the vent photo.
Even with wooden grates, most contractors simply run the hardwood up into the vent, trim off the excess and lay the wooden vent cover on the surface of the floor (as you probably know). To frame a vent flush with the floor surface as your contractor did with the surrounding strips of flooring requires not only an attention to detail, but also reasonable additional time and effort. Kudos to your flooring contractor; I'd suggest that his firm (her firm?) is a keeper. Thanks for sharing the photo. It's good to know that such "old world" pride of work and craftsmanship still exists."
